Abstract:
Well-written reviews counteract the inertia that can afflict any field, given the pressures on the professorate and the limited resources of academic publishing houses. Between the demands of teaching, publication, production, and university service many theatre professors struggle to keep up with the literature related to their own research interests, let alone read broadly in the field. In such a context, no book—not even an excellent book—is assured an audience. Books that are not easily categorized, that do not fit comfortably in a given discipline, or that address underresearched topics are even less likely to reach a broad audience (and “broad” in terms of academic publishing is clearly a relative term). Reviews create audiences for books that might otherwise sit unnoticed in the margins of a field. Every review implicitly charts important directions for the field; reviews identify central conversations in the academy and indicate how theatre studies can engage these conversations. Reviews help us to be eclectic readers, and we must be such readers if we hope to speak beyond the circle that shares our individual research interests. It is in the spirit of eclecticism that Theatre Survey has instituted the column “What Are You Reading?” asking innovative scholars to share and reflect on the texts that feed their thinking. It is in the same spirit that Theatre Survey reviews a broad spectrum of the books received and invites both junior and senior scholars to propose reviews of books that the journal has not received but that should come to the attention of scholars of theatre and performance studies. Reviews help shape the field. Theatre Survey looks for reviews that cultivate new performance-centered historiographic study, reflecting a diverse range of methodological and critical perspectives.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the working process of journalists who edit books, whether publishing company owners or hired editors. Based on a nondirective questionnaire, interviews were applied to book editors who declared themselves as journalists by academic education or professional experience, and editors majored in book editing as well. The interviews were examined and categorized by themes, settled by content analysis techniques. This research allows to assert that journalists, even when working in other field as book editing, still feel themselves related to journalism, see book as an object to be venerated and have a different perception of book production from traditional editors\' perspective, in which the journalist-editors claim to use their news background.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to identify prestige indexes used by Sabático cultural supplement (2010-2013) on the journalistic construction of the book editors’ image made from the cover, an emblematic space of recognition. Based on a trust contract of fiduciary value, journalism is capable of legitimizing and delegitimizing, give visibility or hush up, building an alleged consensus over a period's culture. Cultural supplements act as a specialized system, eluding the daily logic of journalistic coverage. To achieve our objectives, we gathered all Sabático's issues published by O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper – a total of 160 –, and charted the covers' contents, obtaining a wide view of the most important themes and agents that have been portrayed on the supplement's first page. Applying Content Analysis (CA) theory, we delimited our corpus to six issues that have book editors on their cover. They are, in order of publishing date: Companhia das Letras's Luiz Schwarcz; Perspectiva's Jacó Guinsburg; Record's Sergio Machado; Objetiva's Roberto Feith; Alexandre and Evandro Martins Fontes, of WMF – Martins Fontes and Martins Fontes, respectively; and Cosac Naify's Charles Cosac. The confrontation with theory resulted in three analytic categories, which are collectively related to the representation of these editors: Education, Networking, and Catalog. The results show that the journalism practiced by Sabático builds an ideal image of these professionals based on established values of cultural literacy. We identify, then, an alleged journalistic consensus around well-known editors. They hold family heritage, have scholarly education and develop competencies, circulate around the business world, engage with prestigious people and brands, and, due to these reasons, are able to choose the best texts to turn into books.

After living for more than 500 years with printed books, the mediated society comes across new practices and cyberspace provides necessary infrastructure to spread the electronic text, which has now personified immateriality. Thus, we have studied the concept of the book not only as an important means of acquiring knowledge, but also its use in contemporary times as a hypermedia process which involves various social actors and more broadly embraces the publishing sector. Our goal, therefore, is to study this process from the tripartite relationship between reader-author-publisher and the new practices and uses created by the advent of digital books as part of cyberculture. In order to do so, we have conducted an empirical qualitative research aiming at gathering current information about the growing adoption of eBooks in contemporary society and we have used the Grounded Theory in order to understand the current changes within the publishing sector. From the analysis we noticed that, despite the dynamics of production and distribution of digital books, the publishing market is still strongly based on business model for printed books. On the other hand, digital books have shown a potential that is capable of supplying new needs, which have risen in the cyberculture context, due more to the interaction and sharing media power than to its technology itself.<br>Após uma longa trajetória, com a utilização de diversos materiais da natureza como suporte, o livro apresenta-se sob um novo formato, o digital.

This study aims to examine the relationship between the book and its main social actors, the reader, the author and the publisher, in scope of the popularization of ereaders, by research on the circumstances in which the introduction of the digital book can affect the structures of production, circulation and appropriation of biographical information. We used to do this, an extensive survey of works and documents about the story of book publishing in Brazil, as well as theoretical references for the digital book publishing, reading practices and copyright, supported by statistical data market, about the perspective of its production and circulation, and social penetration of reading and devices. Wheeler, Belinda. "EXPANSIVE MODERNISM: FEMALE EDITORS, LITTLE MAGAZINES, AND NEW BOOK HISTORIES." OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/411.

Full text
Abstract:
The resurgence of modern periodical studies has expanded our understanding of “littleqrdquo; magazines and the editors behind them, but many studies continue to be restricted to the 1920s, examine male editors, and focus on well–established literary journals, rather than the subversive magazines that expanded the reign of modernism in the years from 1910 to 1950. These studies, though fascinating, privilege a select few and leave many lost to the archive. The new theory of book history and those who evaluate the book as a material object that is designed to circulate among a range of publics provide powerful and useful frameworks for recognizing the significance of what had previously been considered mere data. This study focuses on several neglected female little magazine editors who, despite various obstacles, powerfully intervened in the modernism debates throughout the 1910s through to the late 1940s by shaping successful publications to invite public appreciation of values they espoused. Unlike canonical modernist figures such as Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot who championed an elite style of modernism that was usually inaccessible to most, Lola Ridge, Gwendolyn Bennett, Caresse Crosby, and Kay Boyle encouraged diversity and fostered heterogeneity by selecting and juxtaposing material by new writers and artists who moved easily around and over the borders separating high art and mass culture, who recovered marginalized voices from history, and who appealed for social justice. Further, their traditional and non–traditional roles while they served as editors show that in many cases being an editor meant more than just choosing works and arranging them. One chapter is devoted to Lola Ridge, the American literary editor of Broom (1922-1923). Ridge was a cosmopolitan modernist who welcomed a broad audience to Broom and invited readers to champion styles of writing and artwork that contained strong social commentary with American subjects, instead of copying European models that many argued were created for art's sake. Another chapter focuses on African American poet, graphic artist and literary columnist, Gwendolyn Bennett, who held several editorial roles at Opportunity, Fire!!, and Black Opals, from the mid–1920s until the early 1930s. A heterodox modernist, Bennett skillfully discussed and placed artistic work by members of the New Negro movement next to the work by their forefathers, subsequently fostering congeniality between the two conflicting literary groups and promoting a united front during the development of the Harlem Renaissance. She also promoted co–operation between black and white artists and writers with her universally themed poetry, graphic art, and literary column. Chapter four centers on Black Sun Press book publisher, novelist, and poet, Caresse Crosby, owner and editor of Portfolio (1945-1948), who challenged artistic reception on both sides of the Atlantic by bringing glamorous modernism to her unbound journal of eclectic work. Crosby promoted co–operation between artists and writers from conflicting World War II countries through the placement and types of materials she published on the pages of her magazine. The epilogue calls for scholars to expand their view of the modernist project and recover the often “hidden” work by overlooked female little magazine editors. Like Ridge, Bennett, and Crosby before her, Kay Boyle (This Quarter 1927-1929), who can be linked to each editor (directly or indirectly), relied on her trusted network of friends as she edited This Quarter. Her editorial support for young and experienced artists who used innovative styles and her commitment to social justice parallels her colleagues' dedication to the modernist project. These women's labor, the significant literary time periods they worked in, the different genres, critical content, and styles of modernism they championed, and the social formations their journals produced expanded the base of modernism and reinvigorated American art and literature between the Wars, leaving a legacy for future artists and writers.

The study presents its history, since the foundation as 'Zahar Editores', in the 1950s, describing the editorial proposals on the context of specific social and marketing situations. Some critical moments were highlighted, when both the editorial policies and the company's management structure were reassessed, resized, establishing a period of major changes. That said, this work aims to analyze different Zahar’s catalogs: one of the 1985 period - when the publisher house started to be managed by Jorge Zahar and his children - and the ones from 2001 to 2014, noticing the aspects of changes and similarities between all the catalogs and the editorial fund. The categories 'independent' and 'classical books' have been identified as strategic elements in the self-conception and external identification of the publishing house, pointing its perception of books as cultural assets, as well as the role of the editor as a cultural agent. The performance of Zahar has been challenging two types of diagnostics in the common sense and even in the academic literature. The first is that publishers need to invest in books that quickly reach high sales levels, even if they don’t last too long, in order to ensure profitability and presence in the market. The second is that, in general, small and medium publishing houses, still autonomous, tend to sell their copyrights to the largest and most capitalized companies, once they have to face the aggressive marketing policies of these organizations. The research findings suggest that Zahar has insisted on maintaining their self-identification as a publishing house of classical books, directing their editorial policies to the publication of materials that last longer, demonstrating that it is possible to follow their own path in terms of emphasizing the unique role the editor, marked by independence in choosing what, how, when and how many publications - and retaining its place in the market.<br>O presente trabalho versa sobre as políticas editoriais da Jorge Zahar Editor, em especial de 2001 a 2014, discutindo os desafios enfrentados por uma editora que construiu sua marca através do ideal de publicar livros que se mantivessem no mercado editorial ao longo do tempo.

Abstract:
The Poggio Bracciolini conference was dedicated to Bryn Mawr alumna Phyllis Goodhart Gordan (1913-1994) one of the leading Poggio scholars of her generation and the editor of the only major collection of Poggio’s letters in English, Two Renaissance Book Hunters (Columbia University Press, 1974). Gordan and her father, Howard Lehman Goodhart (1887-1951) were also responsible for building one of the great collections of 15th century printed books in America, most of which is now at Bryn Mawr College. This paper draws upon Goodhart’s correspondence with rare book dealers and the extensive notes on his books to survey the strengths of the collection and to examine the process by which he built the collection and worked with rare book dealers in the difficult Depression and World War II years, the period when he acquired most of his books. The paper also considers Goodhart’s growing connections with scholars of early printing as his collection and interests grew, in particular the work of Margaret Bingham Stillwell, the editor of Incunabula in American Libraries (1940).

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter outlines an International Symposium held at Frankfurt on 1–5 September 2019. It marked the centennial of quantitative experiments with molecular beams, pioneered by Otto Stern. The European Physical Society declared Stern’s original laboratory a Historic Site, the fifth in Germany. As a graduate student in 1955, I learned about Otto Stern (1888–1969) and the impact of his molecular beams on quantum physics. I was intrigued and undertook crossed-beam experiments at Berkeley. In 1960 Otto came to a seminar that I gave. Later I met him, and heard some of his stories. The rest of the chapter describes his Nobel Prize and other Fests. In 1958 his long-term colleague, Immanuel Estermann, organized a celebration and Festschrift for Otto’s 70th birthday. In 1988, as a guest editor, I organized a Festschift for the centennial of Otto’s birth. That year, the German Physical Society established the Stern-Gerlach Prize as its highest award for experimental physics. Bretislav Friedrich and I wrote three papers about Stern. Since 2000, Horst Schmidt-Böcking at Frankfurt and colleagues have produced historical articles, along with a book about Otto, edited and bound all of his research papers into books, and diligently pursued letters to and from Otto, collecting them into large volumes.

Abstract:
AbstractThis introductory chapter by the book editor helps to identify the main aims, objectives, organization, and rationale behind the book. The book also advances the findings of each of the chapters and points, based on the initial findings, to some possible further research venues. Traditionally, gender studies have focused on women, which is logical, but gender studies have since the late 1980s started to pay increasing attention to men’s lives as well. This volume focuses on representations of aging masculinities in contemporary U.S. fiction, and thus investigates a selection of literary texts that place old men at the center of the narrative, analyzing specific depictions of issues such as older men’s health problems, body changes and shifting perceptions of sexual prowess, depression, loneliness and loss, but also greater wisdom and confidence, legacy, changing notions and appraisals of time, new relationships, and affective patterns, among others.

Abstract:
In our current era of disinformation, ready access to trustworthy sources is critical. “Fake news,” sophisticated disinformation campaigns, and propaganda distort the common reality, polarize communities, and threaten open democratic systems. What citizens, journalists, and policymakers need is a canonical source of trusted information. For millions, that trusted source resides in the books and journals housed in libraries, curated and vetted by librarians. Yet today, as we turn inevitably to our screens for information, if a book isn’t digital, it is as if it doesn’t exist. To address this gap, the Internet Archive is actively working with the world’s great libraries to digitize their collections and to make them available to users via controlled digital lending, a process whereby libraries can loan digital copies of the print books on their shelves. By bringing millions of missing books and academic literature online, libraries can empower journalists, researchers, and Wikipedia editors to cite the best sources directly in their work, grounding readers in the vetted, published record, and extending the investment that libraries have made in their print collections.

Abstract:
This year’s sponsored, no holds barred health sciences lively lunchtime gathering was open to all. It began with greetings from luncheon sponsor, Rittenhouse. The moderator, Rena Lubker, introduced the session and provided introductory remarks about this year’s three presentations: a commentary on issues that keep us up at night; a report on considerations to make when leaving big deal licenses and entering into new, OA friendly arrangements; and more discussion about the impact of expansions on libraries of academic medical affiliation. All three topics provided fodder for lively discussion at the end. Ramune Kubilius provided her brief annual update on health sciences publishing world developments. Are there trends or commonalities in the issues that concern health sciences collection managers across institutions? Susan Kendall, editor of a recent book on 21st century collection management shared her thoughts on what keeps health sciences collection managers on their toes (or up at night). Audience members were invited to agree or disagree with her list. The ever-changing academic library and affiliated hospital relationship landscape was again explored at the Charleston health sciences-themed gathering. Jean Gudenas examined the effects of hospital mergers and acquisitions on academic libraries. She discussed the challenges with negotiating licensing changes quickly, the commitment to communication, and other matters essential to ensuring access to resources for the new affiliates. What goes into planning, preparing and actively shifting towards a more open access friendly landscape? How do consortia make decisions to leave or enter into deals on behalf of a multi-type academic library system? Are the interests of health sciences libraries represented? Sarah McClung shared examples of recent collections decisions made by the University of California libraries and what lessons can be imparted to other libraries, including those licensing in smaller groups or even solo.

Abstract:
Unfair authorship is one of the most common violations of the publication ethics. These violations comprise «guest», «donated» and «invisible» authorship when the author line indicates the persons that actually are not the authors, or, instead lacks actual executors of studies. This phenomenon is characteristic for the world as a whole; however the developing states striving to carry science to a new level, are the most vulnerable. This is due to inefficient science management, in particular due to formal approach to researcher efficiency evaluation, due to the citation and publication activity indicators use when employing staff, career promotion, giving grants, etc. Scientific and publication communities develop approaches to fight unfair authorship, including implementation of special authorship indicators, new regulations and instructions for editors, reviewers and authors. The bibliometrical approaches are also seen as promising ones. The current status of the problems and solutions are characterized.

Abstract:
The poster shows the results obtained in the project “Digital Music Analysis with the Techniques of the Music Encoding Initiative (MEI) using Anton Bruckner’s compositional studies as an example” (2017 to 2019). On the one hand, the project had the goal of presenting a digital edition of Anton Bruckner’s study book, which he produced during his lessons with Otto Kitzler from 1861 to 1863. An edition of the music in the textbook encoded with MEI and displayed using Verovio and the facsimile can be displayed simultaneously. On the other hand, an automated harmonic analysis of this music was to be designed. For this purpose, keys are recognized using the Krumhansl-Schmuckler algorithm that is based on a resource of pitch classes which are compared with reference values and thus their similarity is calculated. Based on this, chord recognitions are carried out, which are then linked to the keys in the last step and converted to a roman numeral analysis.

Professor M. Zhytaryuk’s review is about a book scientific novelty – a monograph by Professor M. Tymoshyk «Ukrainian journalism in the diaspora: Great Britain. Monograph. K.: Our culture and science, 2020. 500 p. – il., Them. pok., resume English, German, Polish.». Well-known scientist and journalism critic, Professor M. S. Tymoshyk, wrote a thorough work, which, in terms of content, is a combination of a monograph, a textbook and a scientific essay. This book can be useful for both students and practicing journalists or anyone interested in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora, Ukrainian journalism and Ukrainian culture. The author dedicated his work to Stepan Yarmus from Winnipeg, Canada – archpriest, journalist, editor, professor. As the epigraph to the book were taken the words of Ivan Bagryany: «Our press, born under the sword of Damocles of repatriation», not only survived and survived to this day, but also showed a brilliant ability to grow and develop. It was shown that beggars that had come to the West without money at heart can and know how to act so organized. It was also an example of how a modern «enbolshevist» and «denationalized» by the occupier man person is capable of a combined mass action».
