Clifton, Bruno John. "Family and identity in the Book of Judges." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/287463.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of the family in ancient Near Eastern society is so frequently recognized that it has become a truism. It is therefore surprising that in a work of identity-making such as the Bible, the influence of family on the texts' formation has been under studied. Such an omission may be because the discussion on family in the Bible has largely concentrated upon reconstructing day-to-day life as background to our reading. Scholars have not seen family loyalty as an essential component in the narratives' meaningfulness. In my dissertation, I examine family and identity in the Book of Judges. I argue that the family is the dominant locus of identity for people throughout the first millennium BCE and that Judges' social communication depends upon acknowledging this dynamic. The meaning of the local folklore gathered together in Judges relies upon an appreciation of the values held by the society from which it comes and distinguishes this core material from the editorial framework. This perspectival dichotomy also raises questions about the book's redactional methodology. Identity is revealed through socio-relational dynamics; hence, my thesis takes a social-scientific approach to the texts. Following an introduction, the first chapter discusses family and identity with particular reference to the localized structures of first-millennium BCE Palestine. The next four chapters present texts from Judges in which I employ four socio-anthropological theories. I begin with the tale of Jael and Sisera in Judg 4 and 5, to which I apply the concept of social space. I then compare the stories of Abimelech in Judg 9 and Jephthah in Judg 11 in light of ascribed social status. The wedding of Samson in Judg 14 forms the third study for which endogamy and the socio-economic autonomy of the household are relevant theories and I end by discussing hospitality and social distance in the eventful journey of the Levite in Judg 19. I conclude that the 'nationalizing' of these folktales by the editorial frame must nevertheless respect their familial perspective to maximize the success of Israel's identity-making.

Abstract:
Under historical critical scholarship, the book of Judges is generally considered a composite work comprising three distinct and essentially unrelated sections. The central section (2:6-16:31), redacted out of traditional source material, is believed to be originally a part of the larger Deuteronomistic History that runs from Deuteronomy to Kings. The prologue (1:1-2:5) and epilogue (17:1-21:25), on the other hand, are seen as independent compositions that are only artificially appended onto the central section at a later stage of the book’s redactional history. In the last two decades, there has been an increasing tendency for the book to be read synchronically as an integrated whole. Although synchronic scholars have drawn attention to the presence of thematic links that connect the different sections of the book, they have yet to justify their integrative approach by exploring whether such links are established by design, and if so, whether, they imply compositional unity for the book as a whole in its current canonical form. The present thesis thus seeks to remedy this lack. In Chapter 1, the present thesis is placed in its historical context as scholarship on Judges in the past century is critically surveyed. In Chapters 2-4, rhetorical links between the prologue and the epilogue, the epilogue and central section, and the prologue and central sections are respectively examined in detail. As the evidence seems to suggest that such links are established by conscious design, the implication is that at the compositional level, a closer relationship than has been recognised thus far may indeed exist between the three sections. Recognising that any claim of compositional unity for Judges would inevitably have to answer questions regarding apparent discrepancies in viewpoints within the book, in Chapter 5, the issue of kingship, concerning which critical scholars have discerned divergent voices within the book, is explored.

Abstract:
During recent decades, there has been a trend among biblical scholars towards applying methods borrowed from literary studies to the familiar texts of the Old and New Testaments. A major reason for this reorientation is the search for a meaningful and interpretable text; hence, it can be seen as a protest against the historical-critical school and its ambition to reconstruct an authentic text by means of a diachronic analysis. Synchronic scholars argue for a new understanding of the biblical text, claiming that the object of interpretation is the text in its present form, regarded as a literary production. Consequently, they can study texts that are commonly considered to be patchworks or conglomerations as meaningful literary works regardless of their pre-history or authorship. In this thesis I do not focus on studies that concern individual narratives or poems but on those that apply a synchronic approach to large units of texts such as books or collections of books. My example is the book of Judges, and the fundamental issue is whether the synchronists’ description of its structure and of the relationship between the individual narratives and the larger text is sustainable. Through analyses of the book’s introduction and the stories about Ehud, Deborah, Jephthah and Samson, I argue that the scholars under consideration are often compelled to form interpretations that are in conflict with a “natural” or “intuitive” reading. I hence claim that they are not reading these stories in accordance with the conventions that are generally applied to narratives. The arguments in which they refer to implicit devices, allusions and the structure of the larger text are assessed as unconvincing. I argue that that these scholars make two common theoretical mistakes. Firstly, they do not consider the specific restrictions that apply to “the literary point of view”. Secondly, they disregard the fact that narratives are autonomous and hence resistant to reworking. If several independent narratives are put together, they are not thereby transformed into a larger single narrative even though they may contain common patterns and motifs. Hence, the individual story represents the primary level of meaning and discrete elements are understood as motifs within a literary construction. The stories of the book of Judges are therefore texts within a text. This explains why the book lacks a coherent ideology or morality. The tensions and ambiguities in the book cannot be resolved by classifying it as a literary production and studying it synchronically: on the contrary, doing this confirms and explains the difficulties in the book – that is, the inconsistent character of both the book and its narratives and the bizarre events that are recounted therein – and its polyphonic character.

Sommers, Luke. "A world in which things are not as they should be: How the Deuteronomistic ideology is reinforced in the book of judges by the portrayal of women and domestic space." Thesis, McGill University, 2011. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=103781.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that the presentation of women and domestic space in the book of Judges supports the Deuteronomistic ideology and intention for the book. The first chapter provides an overview of scholarship on the Deuteronomistic History and the role of the book of Judges within this history. The book of Judges is shown to clearly communicate the dangers of idolatry and improper worship, and the necessity of strong central government by depicting pre-monarchic Israel as a chaotic and dangerous society, a world in which things are not as they should be. The second chapter examines the social background of women and domestic space in ancient Israel. By presenting a reading of the female characters of the book of Judges, the third chapter demonstrates how these social roles are challenged and contravened constantly and in diverse ways, especially in the stories of Judg 4; 11; 16; and 19. Thus, the portrayal of women and domestic space in the book of Judges is one way pre-monarchic Israel is demonstrated to be a world in which things are not as they should be. In this way the Deuteronomistic ideology is reinforced.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the use of E-books in higher education, specifically at Malmö University. The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes students have towards the use of E-books for scholarly purposes in higher education versus their printed counterparts. This study looks at student preferences in the use of E-books compared to printed books, along with the effects these media have on students reading habits. By discovering in which situations E-books or printed books are most beneficial, students can make informed decisions about which medium will benefit them the most. An online survey and recorded interviews were used as methods for collecting data, whichwas then compared to previously published studies related to this subject. Students were found to prefer the printed book for studying purposes, and it still remains as the main source for reading and analyzing longer passages of text. E-books, on the other hand, were found to be most advantageous when preparing research reports. This means that both media still have their place inhigher education, which is likely to continue in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:
When we're young, our elders tell us to never judge a book by its cover. But when we grow older and develop our own browsing behaviors, we can admit to relying on the cover to catch our attention. This thesis explores the overall importance the cover plays in consumer browsing. Furthermore, it examines the marketing involved in book sales for the Young Adult/New Adult genre. Three research questions were developed; (1) what characteristics drive readers to further investigate a book; (2) how does browsing behavior differ between bookstores and online retail platforms; (3) what hedonic cues are interpreted by various cover images. To assess the research foci, I conducted prior and primary research; the latter includes an online survey and five in-depth interviews. Overall, the results suggest that the cover is one of the most important features of a book's packaging. I also found that; (1) apart from the cover, the synopsis and price are the other significant features that lead to reader interest; (2) the cover of a book is more essential in an in-store setting; (3) many readers of the genre hold expectations of commonly used cover images, but each image is interpreted uniquely to the reader.

Lyons, William John. "What must the 'judge of all the earth' do exactly? : a critique through praxis of the canonical approach of Brevard S. Childs." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1999. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/10229/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this work is to attempt to read the text of Genesis 18-19 in line with the canonical approach of Brevard S Childs in order to critique his programme through its actual praxis. In chapter 1 a historical introduction to the discipline of 'biblical theology' and its texts provides a background against which to contextualise Childs's own work and its historical development. A detailed description of the approach in terms of its historical justification and its actual praxis appears in chapter 2. There certain common criticisms are encountered and refuted. It is also suggested that Childs's approach is often the target of unwarranted criticism based upon an assumed foundationalist view of hermeneutics. In chapter 3, this is developed further and it is argued that the non-foundationalist hermeneutics of Stanley E. Fish provide a heuristically powerful way of understanding the canonical approach and its 'community of faith'. Two aspects of the praxis of the canonical approach form the core of chapter 4: the necessary role of narrative presuppositions and the potential role of diachronic studies of biblical texts. A description of presuppositions necessary for understanding Genesis 18-19 are drawn from Genesis 1-17 and outlined, and the diachronic studies of H. Gunkel is used as an exemplar to test the illumination which diachronic studies may provide to readers of the canonical text. In chapters 5 and 6, a detailed exegesis is provided of the canonical text of Genesis 18 and Genesis 19. A short section on the effects of this exegesis on subsequent Old Testament texts completes chapter 6. In conclusion, the experience of reading the texts in this way is used to point out certain aspects and implications of the canonical approach which are missed when the approach is considered in purely theoretical terms.

Abstract:
The purpose of this ethnographic study was to explore how youth consumption of rap music informed their ideas of gender, race, sexuality, and education at a local community center in Atlanta, Georgia. The participants in the study were comprised of three male and six female Black students from working class families, ranging in age from 13–17 years old. The data collection process included 60 formal interviews, 55 informal interviews, 27 focus group interviews, 103 participant observations, and document analyses of media materials. Atlas.ti: The Knowledge Workbench (2003) assisted with the organizing, coding, categorizing, and interpreting of the vast amount of data. Findings from the study revealed four major themes: (a) youth’s engagement with rap music fostered essentialized notions of Blackness, (b) teens believed that Blacks were intellectually inferior, (c) youth perceived their classroom teachers as racist and (d) youth responded to their teacher’s perceived racism by disassociating themselves from youth they believed to be academically inferior. The findings of this study addressed the need for candid dialogues about race in the classroom and educational policy that incorporates critical media literacy.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the OT history of Jephthah (Jdg 10:6-12:7). The work is divided into two parts: the first one concerns the formation of the biblical text and proposes a new critical analysis of the passage through the confrontation between MT, LXX, Vg and other sources. This comparison examines the relationships between the MT and the Hebrew model of the LXX as well as the differences between the different recensions of the LXX; furthermore, the study of the lexicon and the themes present therein leads to the formulation of a new hypothesis on the time of composition and the historical and literary contextualization of the episode within the biblical corpus. The second part focuses on the history of the interpretations of the passage in the Latin and Greek world from the 1st century AD to the beginning of the 5th century, and has led to the constitution of a dossier of passages, examined in their context, which comment on or mention the episode. The attention given to the context has made it possible to resolve certain problems that have hitherto prevented the reconstruction of the exegetical path of the passage (attribution of certain catenary fragments, dating of Ambrose’s De virginitate, etc.). This new research approach combines a complete analysis of the biblical episode with a thorough study of its exegesis. It thus reveals, on the one hand, the choices made during the composition of a sacred, though problematic text and, on the other hand, the different mechanisms employed by the exegetes to explain the meaning of a story in which the goodness of God, who tolerated the human sacrifice, is questioned

Abstract:
In Storytel’s application on which a user can read and listen to digitalized literature, a user is displayed a list of books where the first thing the user encounters is the book title and cover. A book cover is therefore essential to attract a consumer’s attention. In this study, we take a data-driven approach to investigate the design principles for book covers through deep learning models and explainable AI. The first aim is to explore how well a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) can interpret and classify a book cover image according to its genre in a multi-class classification task. The second aim is to increase model interpretability and investigate model feature to genre correlations. With the help of the explanatory artificial intelligence method Gradient-weighted Class Activation Map (Grad-CAM), we analyze the pixel-wise contribution to the model prediction. In addition, object detection by YOLOv3 was implemented to investigate which objects are detectable and reoccurring in the book covers. An interplay between Grad-CAM and YOLOv3 was used to investigate how identified objects and features correlate to a specific book genre and ultimately answer what makes a good book cover. Using a State-of-the-Art CNN model architecture we achieve an accuracy of 48% with the best class-wise accuracies for genres Erotica, Economy & Business and Children with accuracies 73%, 67% and 66%. Quantitative results from the Grad-CAM and YOLOv3 interplay show some strong associations between objects and genres, while indicating weak associations between abstract design principles and genres. Furthermore, a qualitative analysis of Grad-CAM visualizations show strong relevance of certain objects and text fonts for specific book genres. It was also observed that the portrayal of a feature was relevant for the model prediction of certain genres.

This work is based on the trial of writer and editor Siegfried Ellwanger, indicted by the Public Prosecutor of the State of Rio Grande do Sul from the practice of the crime of racism (article 20 of law n ° 7,716/89, with the redaction given by law n ° 8,081/90), by reason of publishing and marketing books content discriminatory against the Jewish people. The first chapter describes the path travelled by Revisão Editora, founded by the defendant, which specialized in disseminating ideas that contest the occurrence of historical facts related to the second world war, in particular, the existence of the Jewish Holocaust perpetrated by the Nazis, while remained in activity, in the main pole of the entry called "historical revisionism" in Brazil. Abstract:
The present work studies the reception of the Bible by Jorge Luis Borges by means of the analysis of his complete work. It consists of three parts. The first one, merely contextual, outlines the literary fortune of the biblical imagery, a question that has occupied to the Anglo-Saxon criticism from the decade of 1980, and concisely attends to the way in which three important authors for Borges Dante, Milton and Blake used the Scriptures in their work. The second one attempts to specify, from the basis of certain biographical information, declarations and writings of Borges, the importance that the Biblical literature had for him and the way it influenced his own poetics. The third one analyzes the literary use of certain characters of the Scriptures by Borges; the analysis reveals that these characters personify in a paradigmatic way some of the central topics of his work, as knowledge, death, time or identity.

Ingram, Everette Wayne. "The peculiar judgment on God's people with special reference to the Book of Judges." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/6221.

Full text
Abstract:
The motif of judgment pervades the Hebrew bible and it is generally accepted that one of the functions of deity is judgment. Within the Book of Judges, this motif logically surfaces through the various pericopes describing premonarchic Israel. The prologue to the book includes paradigmatic formulae for the pattern of this judgment and the institution of a deliverer. Commonly, it has been accepted that a cyclical pattern exists in the book in which the Israelites begin in a proper relationship with YHWH. This disintegrates into their apostasy resulting in YHWH empowering an oppressive force to subdue them as an element of His judgment. At some point in the subjection, Israel cries out to YHWH and He raises up a deliverer. The deliverer acts as the divine representative to remove the oppressor and he restores peace and stability as long as he lives. The pattern returns again after the death of the deliverer. The study begins with an examination of the Israelite deity and the object and subject of His judgment. The next chapter explores the themes of judgment from a diachronic perspective to determine how the critical methodologies of canonical, textual, source, form, redaction, social-scientific, and historiographical criticism either support or refute the idea that YHWH operates based on the anthropocentric paradigm of judgment from the Judges prologue. The following chapter continues that examination from a synchronic perspective employing a close reading of the text through rhetorical and narrative criticism. The fifth chapter examines the idea of the anthropocentric cycle of judgment and its constituent elements. The study concludes that while the elements of this cycle are present throughout the book; nevertheless, they are not present consistently throughout the entirety of each circumstance of judgment. As the hypothesis of this paradigm is rejected, the study examines whether the cyclical elements should be considered from a theocentric perspective. This hypothesis is also rejected. The study considers whether there is a complementary approach that embodies the two other paradigmatic structures. Ultimately, that hypothesis is rejected also. The study concludes that both diachronic and synchronic methodologies are helpful in making this evaluation; however, only those that focus on a close reading of the text are the most beneficial for validating the hypothesis. Since the hypothesis that YHWH is bound by the anthropocentric cycle must be rejected another conclusion is required. Through the Judges narrative, it becomes apparent that although peculiar and distinct methods of divine judgment on behalf of and against Israel have a general form; YHWH is by no means bound to function according to a prescribed ritual. Even though judgment is often initiated because of Israelite apostasy, it is not Israelite repentance that brings judgment through deliverance; but, rather it is the mercy, compassion, and love of YHWH that controls and initiates His peculiar judgment. The judgment on YHWH's people is indeed peculiar because it occurs within the context of divine justice.

Diffey, Daniel Scott. "Gideon's Response and Jotham's Fable: Two Anti-Monarchial Texts in a Pro-Monarchial Book?" Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/4526.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to interpret Gideon's response in Judg 8:23 and Jotham's fable in Judg 9:7-15 within the context of the book of Judges. The book of Judges has recently been seen as an apology for the Davidic monarchy. Studies that have advocated this perspective have focused on the prologue (Judg 1:1-3:6) and epilogue (Judg 17-21) where there appears to be a focus on the tribe of Judah and an explicitly pro-monarchial refrain. These studies have largely neglected Gideon's response and Jotham's fable, which have been described by some scholars as two of the most anti-monarchial texts in the entire Old Testament. This dissertation analyzes both the book of Judges as a whole and these two texts in particular, with the aim of establishing the notion that the book of Judges contains a coherent message concerning monarchy from start to finish. Chapter 1 establishes the methodology used in the present study. The methodology employed is a literary-exegetical and theological analysis of the text from a synchronic perspective. Chapter 2 surveys the history of interpretation of the book of Judges with a focus on Gideon's response and Jotham's fable. Chapter 3 places the composition of the book within its life-setting arguing that the book was likely composed during David's early reign. Chapter 4 looks at the ideology of monarchy within the entirety of the book of Judges. Chapter 5 provides a detailed literary analysis of the plot of the Gideon narrative and the characterization of Gideon. This is done to establish the Gideon is an unreliable character and that his response in 8:23 cannot be considered as a theological axiom that is to be trusted. Chapter 6 provides a detailed literary analysis of the plot of the Abimelech narrative along with a discussion of the characterization of both Jotham and Abimelech. This chapter argues that the purpose of Jotham's fable is to serve as a curse against Abimelech and the lords of Shechem and is not anti-monarchial in nature. Chapter 7 provides a summary of the contents of the dissertation with final reflecting thoughts.

"Yahweh and the gods of Canaan: Canaanite influence on early monotheism in the Book of Judges." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/192.

Full text
Abstract:
The period of the Judges reflects a time in history where early monotheism comes into contact with many forces and influences. The most crucial of these is the Canaanite peoples with their religious practices which were focused largely on Baal and the pantheon of which he was a part. This study seeks to show that the Canaanite religious ideas had a detrimental influence on early monotheism as reflected in the book of Judges. This led to a downward spiral in which ‘everyone did what was right in his own eyes’ and consequently abandoned absolute monotheism for a syncrestic religion which led to religious and social chaos. The Canaanite religious forces which influenced the development of monotheism in this period are studied in the lives of four of the major judges, Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah and Samson. The findings are then applied to today’s world in which similar influences are found. The methodology used to analyse the texts is V.K. Robbins’ socio-rhetorical method in which the layers of various texts are exposed to reveal a rich tapestry of meaning and understanding. Simultaneous analysis pertaining to narrative literature is also done. A brief description of the characteristics of Yahweh is established from the book of Judges and is used as the point of comparison with a similar description of the various gods and goddess of the Canaanite pantheon based on the Ugaritic literature. Each judge is placed in the historical, geographical, social and religious context of the narrative and the influences of the Canaanites highlighted. Applications for today are also made. The results of the study show that continuing association with the Canaanites led to the infiltration of their religious ideas into early monotheism. This encouraged the Israelites to abandon their unique monotheism for a blend of monotheism and polytheism which allowed everyone to live his life in the manner he believed was right for him. A similar situation is found in the 21st century AD.

The purpose of this thesis is to understand the response to and application of power by Gideon. The goal of this research is to find the possible causes of the evolving processes for his changes in mental states and behaviors through scripture analysis and literature review. Chapter one, the Introduction, describes the motivation and purpose behind the research, literature review, and methodologies. Chapter two discusses how Gideon responded with power. The chapter is divided into two parts: the response to the highest authority–God and the response to the pressures from people. Chapter three continues with the discussion on the positive and the negative sides of the application of power by Gideon. Practical applications for present-day pastoral leadership are then considered and suggested by examining Gideon’s usage of power. In the chapter, some related social psychology theories are used to analyze the mental states and behaviors of Gideon. Chapter four provides the conclusion of this research. When Gideon first met God, he was suspicious and did not believe what God said. But God chose him to be a leader and gave him power. Gradually, God strengthened Gideon’s faith to enable him to deliver Israel from the hands of the Midianites. The Israelites wanted Gideon to be their king but he rejected the offer of kingship. In the midst of these experiences, Gideon underwent several changes: from having low self-esteem and unbelief to being brave and wise; from being a humble leader to a brutal leader. The later acts of Gideon were also inconsistent with his earlier rejection of the offered kingship. His application of power and leadership model can serve as a warning for present-day pastoral leaders.

The Samson narrative is the longest among the stories in the Book of Judges. From birth to death, Samson lived a legendary life, although his behavior was confusing to many people. His personal lifestyle contrasted sharply with his mission. It is commonly believed that Samson’s failures stemmed from his sexual desires. However, the truth behind the text is not that simple. There were dramatic tensions between his gifts given by God, his character, and his environment. “Spiritual gifts” are not directly brought up in the Old Testament, nor do similar terms appear in the Samson narrative; but that does not mean God refused to empower His servants to serve Him and the community of faith. In the Old Testament, God endowed people with His Spirit by coming upon them and being with them. The Spirit of God was obviously at work in Samson’s career as a judge. This thesis analyzes reasons why Samson misused his gifts from the Spirit of God and suggests principles on how people should use their gifts correctly. In the Samson narrative, the abuse of gifts were mainly caused by wrong motivations or purpose. If people use their gifts for their own benefits rather than the good of the community of faith, the gifts would be considered abused. Moreover, it is essential for a servant of the God who bestows gifts, to surrender towards His authority. Finally, God’s servants can use their gifts well when they embrace their calling. It would be too narrow to regard “gifts” as simply an external performance or ability. Based on His grace, God blesses His people with gifts so that individual believers, as well as the community of faith, can be built up. From past to present, God’s Spirit has been willing to grant gifts to His servants to fulfill His will. Not much time has passed between the period of judges and the present. Both the judges and the church face the challenge of separating from their secular environments. Similarly, God’s servants also face the struggle between their own self-ambition and God’s authority. The purpose of this thesis is to suggest principles of using gifts for individual believers and the community of faith.

The second generation “who did not know the LORD or the work which he had done for Israel (Judges 2:10)” is just like the second generation of Taiwanese Christians today. Both of these groups do not know what it means to have a relationship with God. In this study, the author attempts to observe the process of faith and spiritual depravity of the second generation of the Israelites who entered Canaan through the analysis and exegesis of Judges 2:6-3:6. The author also discusses the causes and effects of why the inheritance of faith in this group failed, in hopes of offering some suggestions for present-day pastors to shepherd and educate the younger generation of Christians. The study shows that "the Inheritance of Faith" is a major problem throughout the period of the judges from gloom to doom. Joshua’s generation was obedient to God, took possession of their inheritance and served the Lord. However, the successive generation committed apostasy. They did not drive out their enemies, cohabitated and intermarried with the Gentiles, and served other gods. Even though God continued to reach out to save them in His mercy, this generation who had lost their faith was still "unworthy." Thus began a vicious cycle of spiritual retrogression and depravity. In other words, the failure of "the Inheritance of Faith" that the Book of Judges described began with religious decay, went towards immorality and family disintegration, and finally led to "Canaanization." Only when the Lord taught the people of Israel to know His omniscience by means of “war” did the next generation start to honor and trust in God for a short time.

Abstract:
This study investigates the polysemy of the preposition מִן (min) in Biblical Hebrew. The complexity relating to the senses of this preposition has long been recognised, but existing sources differ about the primary sense of מִן (min), as well as the delimitation of the derived senses. In order to provide a more systematic account of the senses of מִן (min) the principled polysemy approach, which was developed by Tyler and Evans (2003), was employed. This methodology is grounded in the theoretical framework of cognitive semantics. The criteria provided for determining the primary sense point to a sense in which מִן (min) indicates both locational source and separation. These two elements are both present in the primary sense. By applying criteria for determining distinct senses, ten additional usages of מִן (min) were identified, namely, material source, partitive, cause, agent, origin, position, exception, comparison, negative consequence, and time. It was shown that all these senses are related to the primary sense in a substantiated way. A semantic network for the preposition מִן (min) was proposed in which it was shown that half of the senses are more related to the source element in the primary sense and the other half to the separation element of the primary sense.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on exegesis and interpretation of Judges 11, 29-40. Main method used in this thesis is narrative analysis, via which I investigate and interpret the chosen text as one story unit in its contemporal form. I focus on the course of action, how and with whom the characters act and what is the meaning of these in the whole narrative. I examine the structure of the text, because it's essential for the story told. I examine the context of the chosen text as well, because it's in the middle of broader narrative about Jephthah, of the book of Judges and of the Old Testament. Behavior and actions of characters, as well as facts used in the story, may have different meanings, which may not be apparent from the text itself. The aim of this thesis is to find one or several interpratiations, which will be based in the text itself and its context as much as possible. That will aslo enable me to deal with other intepratations. In the conclusion, I will shortly speak about text's influence on arts and present several themes for homiletic or pastoral use, which the story presents and contents.

In recent years, tattoos become increasingly popular in Taiwan due to professionalizing and personalizing. However, whether the general job market changed its attitude towards tattoos is still left unexplored by the academic world. This study investigated if visible tattoos on job applicants affect the chances of employment, and further examined if job types have their influences on tattooed job applicants’ hireability. The present study surveyed 828 adults who have professional careers in Taiwan. The statistical results showed that (1) visibly tattooed job applicants were less likely to be hired compared to non-tattooed job applicants; (2) visibly tattooed female job applicants were more likely to be hired compared to visibly tattooed male job applicants; and (3) regardless of job types, the hireability of visibly tattooed job applicants did not differ. Generally speaking, the tendency of “judging a book by its cover” is still common in the Taiwanese job market. As for now, the Tainan City Government has pledged to become a facial appearance equal city by encouraging job seekers not attaching pictures of themselves. Combined with the present study, it is suggested that both job-seeker end and job-provider end can adjust their process of recruiting, for a more equal working environment.

The e-book concept being used for academic purposes proved to be very successful during the last decade. However, the concept had trouble entering the market segment due to a lack of screen technology. Recent announcements of the launching of new e-book reader devices (such as Kindle, Ipad, etc) have re-emphasized the importance of this technological trend. Little research has been done as to how ‘ready’ the public is to accept this new trend. Therefore, this study is focused on the recreational market segment and it analyzes four constructs, namely perceived usefulness, relative advantage, ease of use and social factors influencing the usage and behavioral intention of people living and working in Taiwan, Republic of China. The findings of this study indicate that the influence of perceived usefulness on behavioral intention is indeed stronger for the younger generation. Furthermore the effect of relative advantage on behavioral intention is not necessarily moderated by age, since the effect is the same for both groups and the effect of perceived ease of use on behavioral intention is more or less the same across cultures. Distinguishing between the ‘level of acceptance’ of males and females are not too easy, because it is most likely being moderated by age, and not gender. As for the influence of Social factors on usage, it is also not that easy to distinguish between the ‘level of acceptance’ of foreigners in Taiwan compared to Taiwanese citizens. The market is complex and people prove to have the same preferences, irrespective of culture. The findings give very specific indications to publishers and other market players interested in entering the e-book market segment that is focusing on recreational purposes. Marketing strategies determine the success-rate of the launch of any new technology. These findings can help top managers to make better decisions regarding the recreational market segment of the e-book marketplace.

Abstract:
The lives of women are largely hidden in the Old Testament. New archaeological investigationsinto the households of Iron Age I have brought forward new evidence that sheds light on theauthority status and roles of women in the pre-monarchic tribal community. Conventional theory perceives that women were always oppressed and marginalised under a malevolentsystem of male rule in the Bible. The evidence indicates differently. Investigations in thedomestic sphere, where the household processes were under women’s control and management, imply that women held authority that was equal to male power in the public domain. It has been revealed that women held significant positions in the public sphere as well. This study, therefore, is an investigation into women’s status and the wide-ranging socioeconomicand religious roles they held within a system of male rule that allowed women theirauthority and autonomy in a unique period of Israelite history.
