Abstract:
Epistles 1.20, the last poem of its book, begins with an elaborate joke on the entry of Horace's book of epistles into the world and ends with a well-known σϕραγίς describing the poet himself. It will be argued here that this final poem recalls and subverts the pretensions of two earlier final poems in Horace's own Odes, and that its good-humoured depreciation of Horace himself is matched by a similar attitude towards his previous grand poetic claims as a lyric vates.

Abstract:
The name ‘Chloe’ appears four times in Horace's Odes, once in Book 1 (1.23) and three times in Book 3 (3.7, 3.9, 3.26). Whether the ‘Chloes’ represent a woman or women from Horace's real life is probably not something we could know. Furthermore, there is no obvious reason to assume that all the ‘Chloes’ are the same person. However, there is likewise no obvious reason not to read the odes in which the name ‘Chloe’ appears, as some scholars have done, as referring to the same woman, fictional or otherwise. This article argues both that ‘Chloe’ is a consistent character in the Odes and that the portrayal of Chloe is not only connected across odes but also sequential. Taking the poems in order, we see Chloe grow up from a girl who is inexperienced in the world of men to a mature mistress who plays the dominant role in her love affairs.

Hills, P. D. "A commentary on selected poems in Horace's Fourth Book of Odes." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2000. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604066.

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation includes a general introduction and commentaries on C. 4.1, 2, 10, 11 and 15. A detailed essay, including an overview of recent literary criticism, prefaces the commentary proper on each of the selected odes. In each case line-by-line exposition is offered on literary, linguistic, textual, metrical, historical and generic matters. In the general introduction verbal and thematic connections between Odes Four and Ennius Annals Book Sixteen are highlighted and examined. Horace's self-representation as a poet, particularly with regard to Augustus, is also discussed. The introduction to C. 4.1 explains how the central stanzas of the poem are an idealized rehearsal of epithalamial festivities; this is a development from a hypothesis first expounded by Kiessling that Paullus is commended to Venus in terms suitable for a bridgegroom. In the commentary, an ancestral precedent for Paullus' dedication of a shrine to Venus is demonstrated. The introduction to C. 4.2 focuses on the problem of how the addressee, Iullus Antonius, could plausibly be requested to play a Pindaric role in the stead of Horace himself. This entails both a discussion of peotic aemulatio and an analysis of the relationship of laudator and laudandus as depicted by Pindar, with a consideration of how this relates to Horace's modes of praise in Odes Four. The introduction and commentary on C. 4.10 show how Horace takes a situation familiar from Greek epigram, and introduces verbal and thematic novelties into the standard framework. The introduction to C. 4.11 demonstrates the unity of what is usually seen as one of Horace's most starkly disjointed odes, by illustrating how the theme of Maecenas' birthday and the limits of mortal life extends even into the exempla and advice ostensibly directed only at Phyllis. In the commentary, the importance of the context of the Bellerophon exemplum in Pindar I. 7.38ff, is highlighted for the first time.

Liao, Shueh-Ying. Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EPHE4027.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis has chosen to center its attention on The Book of Odes. After the study of diverse interpretations of these poems, the thesis is brought to suggest using numeric humanities in the analysis of what Xing calls “the incentive process” whose rhythmic figure has not yet been clearly defined. At the condition that a sinogram could be considered a musical note, it would be more accurate to call it a “sino-syllable” (hanzi-yinjie 漢字-音節). The results are relayed by these three principles: 1. The contrast of occurrences between sino-syllables 2. The sino-syllables’ combinatorial calculation 3. The scale of perception in comprehending sino-syllablesApplying these principles of analysis, the thesis then reveals an experimental method of reading which sets forth two aspects: the basic components that create the dominant rhythm and the mean ideas that constitute the thematic subject. The harmonious relationship of the dominant rhythm with the thematic subject reveals a system that rhythmically transforms words to poetic language. This metaphorical system, called “rhythmic figure” (jiulü xiuci 節律修辭) for the purpose of this research, serves as an internal reference to the corpus to manifest the rhythmic relationship between the first and final patterns in verses produced with Xing’s method

Grove, Chantal. Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52460.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In his Odes, Horace pays particular attention not only to the subject in hand, but also to the reader as his audience, or the addressee, who is usually mentioned at the beginning of the poem. As this kind of communication draws the poet into his own creation, it is useful to refer to him in that context, as the speaker. It is evident from the manner of communication with the addressee that Horace conveys the message of each poem not solely by means of statements, but by implying certain facts, through this interaction between speaker and addressee. The specific addressee for each ode - to whom the speaker's attitude is a reaction - is therefore chosen with great care, in order to underline a specific subject or support a point of view. Just as each ode is different, and contains a variety of differing emotions, Horace's speakers display a myriad of different attitudes. His deeper sentiments do however remain constant. This brings one to the realisation that Horace applies a number of "roles", in order to obtain the desired effect in each poem. Eventually the interaction is not between the speaker and the addressee, but between the poet and the reader. Some of the poems do not give the names of addressees, only the roles Horace plays as the speaker. These roles are termed personae, and represent the poet on a number of realistic and super-realistic planes. In this study, a selection of personae was analysed and the effects examined, in order to establish in what way the persona might influence the interpretation of the poem. Initially a collective overview of several personae was planned, for the purpose of a synthesis of those personae, possibly leading to the discovery of a central Horatian persona. It was however, found, in the complex perfection of his work, that that central person is Horace: the poet.

Buckner, Brenda Warren. "Against the odds : literacy success in rural, low-income families." Virtual Press, 2004. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1290967.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the literacy-related characteristics of the family and home environment that contribute to the development of siblings who are good readers from rural, low income status families. The case study research method was used in order to gather comprehensive and in-depth information about each informant that reflected the reality of the literacy influences. The case study further aided in the investigation of the complex social unit of the family, which consisted of multiple characteristics that influenced literacy attainment. Each case was analyzed in and of itself, and then a cross case analysis was conducted.Five family-related characteristics that influenced the literacy acquisition and attainment of the siblings emerged from the data analysis. The family value for books and literacy materials, evident through the abundance of materials placed in prominent places within the homes and through the careful storage of literacy materials, was evident in each family. Both families were characterized by an enjoyment for reading and writing, evidenced by the number of books each sibling read, trips to the library, reading aloud in the home, and child created written products. Family literacy practices such as discussions about books, a homework routine, regular trips to the library, and members of the family reading to each other were characteristics present in each of the case studies. Another characteristic evident in each of the families was their value for education. Parents expected the siblings to attend college. The siblings also expected that their graduation from college would improve their socioeconomic status. Each case study was also characterized by the presence of support systems that aided in the literacy attainment of the siblings. The siblings all had a love for books and literacy materials, as well as being persistent, responsible, and accountable in their efforts to attain literacy success. The children were intrinsically motivated to be successful, not only in school, but in life. Support and encouragement for literacy development through the home and school contexts were provided by the parents. Family support systems were also fundamental to the literacy attainment of the siblings.

Wild animals are exposed to many anthropogenic factors in a landscape intensively used by humans, which not only influence their movements but also directly affect their health and survival. Some species use anthropogenic landscapes to their advantage and flourish, others lose their habitats. This book brings together the scientific evidence on the management of selected wildlife species. Evidence-based management is critical to reduce or, in the best case, resolve human-wildlife conflicts. Following this approach, this book is intended for both academics and practitioners.
