Ellemers, Naomi, ed. World of Difference. Translated by Gioia Marini. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462984028.

Full text
Abstract:
Public debates tend to see social inequality as resulting from individual decisions people make, for instance with respect to their education or lifestyle. Solutions are often sought in supporting individuals to make better choices. This neglects the importance of social groups and communities in determining individual outcomes. A moral perspective on social inequality questions the fairness of insisting on individual responsibilities, when members of some groups systematically receive fewer opportunities than others. The essays in this book have been prepared by experts from different disciplines, ranging from philosophy to engineering, and from economics to epidemiology. On the basis of recent scientific insights, World of Difference examines how group memberships impact on individual outcomes in four key domains: health, education and work, migration, and the environment. This offers a new moral perspective on social inequality, which policy makers tend to neglect.

Trifonova, Temenuga. Screening the Art World. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463724852.

Full text
Abstract:
Unlike most studies of the relationship between cinema and art, which privilege questions of medium or institutional specificity and intermediality, Screening the Art World explores the ways in which artists and the art world more generally have been represented in cinema. Contributors address a rarely explored subject -art in cinema, rather than the art of cinema - by considering films across genres, historical periods and national cinemas in order to reflect on cinema’s fluctuating imaginary of ‘art’ and ‘the art world’. The book examines the intersection of art history with history in cinema, cinema’s simultaneous affirmation and denigration of the idea of art as ‘truth’ and what this means for cinema’s understanding of itself, the dominant, often contradictory ways in which artists have been represented on screen, and cinematic representations of the art world’s tenuous position between commercial good and cultural capital.

Gissing, George. The Nether World. Edited by Stephen Gill. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199538287.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Nether World (1889) is generally regarded as the finest of Gissing’s early novels. A fast moving story of highly dramatic, sometimes violent scenes, it depicts life amongst the artisans, factory-girls, and slum-dwellers of Clerkenwell in the 1870s. But this is not just a novel of documentary realism. It is one man’s mordant vision -shaped by bitter personal experience of poverty - of the quality of life endured by a variety of characters in the nether world. With Zolaesque intensity and relentlessness, Gissing lays bare the economic forces which determine the aspirations and expectations of those born to a life of labour. This is a tale of intrigue, as rapacious schemers try to wrest a fortune out of a mysterious old man who has returned to their midst, and of thwarted love. There is no sentimentality. This is a world in which the strong exercise power against their own kind, scheming and struggling for survival, a world from which, Gissing bleakly maintains, there can be no escape.

Abstract:
The nineteenth century saw a new wave of dictionaries, many of which remain household names. Those dictionaries didn’t just store words; they represented imperial ambitions, nationalist passions, religious fervour, and utopian imaginings. The Whole World in a Book explores a period in which globalization, industrialization, and social mobility were changing language in unimaginable ways. Dictionaries in the nineteenth century became more than dictionaries: they were battlefields between prestige languages and lower-status dialects; national icons celebrating the language and literature of the nation-state; and sites of innovative authorship where middle and lower classes, volunteers, women, colonial subjects, the deaf, and missionaries joined the ranks of educated white men in defining how people communicated and understood the world around them. This volume investigates dictionaries in the nineteenth century covering languages as diverse as Canadian French, English, German, Frisian, Japanese, Libras (Brazilian sign language), Manchu, Persian, Quebecois, Russian, Scots, and Yiddish.

Netter, Louis. Reportage Drawing. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350253124.

Full text
Abstract:
How does drawing shape the truth and our understanding of the visual world? Why has the act of reportage drawing persisted and thrived in our ever-changing media landscape? This book offers a deep dive into the world of reportage drawing, a world which is provocative, mixed media, transdisciplinary and immersed in the idiosyncratic vision of the artist. Where the traditional orientation of reportage was on the communicative function of the image as a record of an event, contemporary practitioners, largely detached from the commissioning structures of the 19th and 20th centuries, now seek to capture more experiential qualities of place and choose locations which have highly personal and political significance. Liberated from old conceptions of reportage drawing as objective and true, artists today embrace subjectivity and are seeking a rich dialogue with their subjects, using drawing to tell important stories about protest, human migration, war, corporate capitalism and homelessness. Louis Netter distinguishes contemporary reportage drawing from its historical function through a critical exploration of the aesthetic of the sketch, the role of caricature and the nature of experience. Featuring several prominent artists such as Jill Gibbon, who secretly draws in arms fairs across Europe, renowned reportage illustrator Gary Embury and French reportage artist Loup Blaster, in addition to an exploration of the author’s own work, this book shows how the act of drawing can foster new insights about people, places and political realities in often subtle and challenging ways. Part of the Drawing In series, this book opens up reportage drawing practice as a way of understanding our world in a deeper and more personal way.

Fay, Jennifer. Inhospitable World. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190696771.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Inhospitable World explores the connection between cinema and artificial weather, climates, and even planets in or on which hospitality and survival are at stake. Cinema’s dominant mode of aesthetic world-making is often at odds with the very real human world it is meant to simulate. The chapters in this book take the reader to a scene—the mise-en-scène—where human world-making is undone by the force of human activity, whether it is explicitly for the sake of making a film, or for practicing war and nuclear science, or for the purpose of addressing climate change in ways that exacerbate its already inhospitable effects. The episodes in this book emphasize our always unnatural and unwelcoming environment as a matter of production, a willed and wanted milieu, however harmful, that is inseparable from but also made perceivable through film. While no one film or set of films adds up to a totalizing explanation of climate change, cinema enables us to glimpse anthropogenic environments as both an accidental effect of human activity and a matter of design. Chapters on Buster Keaton, American atomic test films, film noir, the art of China’s Three Gorges Dam, and films of early Antarctic exploration trace parallel histories of film and location design that spell out the ambitions, sensations, and narratives of the Anthropocene, especially as it consolidates into the Great Acceleration starting in 1945.

D'Arcens, Louise. World Medievalism. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198825944.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
World Medievalism: The Middle Ages in Modern Textual Culture explores the ways in which a range of modern textual cultures have continued to engage creatively with the medieval past in order to come to terms with the global present. Building its argument through four case studies—from the Middle East, France, Southeast Asia, and Indigenous Australia–it shows that to understand medievalism as a cultural idiom with global reach, we need to develop a more nuanced grasp of the different ways ‘the Middle Ages’ have come to signify beyond Europe as well as within a Europe that has been transformed by multiculturalism and the global economy. The book’s case studies are explored within a conceptual framework in which medievalism itself is formulated as ‘world-disclosing’—a transhistorical encounter that enables the modern subject to apprehend the past ‘world’ opened up in medieval and medievalist texts and objects. The book analyses the cultural and material conditions under which its texts are produced, disseminated, and received and examines literature alongside films, television programs, newspapers and journals, political tracts, as well as such material and artefactual texts as photographs, paintings, statues, buildings, rock art, and fossils. While the case studies feature distinctive localized forms of medievalism, taken together they reveal how imperial and global legacies have ensured that the medieval period continues to be perceived as a commonly held past that can be retrieved, reclaimed, or revived in response to the accelerated changes and uncertainties of global modernity.

Hiltebeitel, Alf. World of Wonders. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197538227.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the first book in over a thousand years to approach the Mahābhārata and the Harivaṃśa via rasa theory. It argues that both texts put adbhutarasa, the “mood of wonder,” to work as their dominant rasa, in a way that takes readers from their heroes’ rollicking adventures to the text’s profoundest moments. Two Kashmiris, Ānandavardhana (ninth century) and Abhinavagupta (tenth century), launched such inquiry, claiming that the Mahābhārata’s dominant rasa was śāntarasa, the “mood of peace.” Both worked the Harivaṃśa as a related text into their argument, which emphasized peace along with dispassion and the quest for liberation. Their argument has remained the only serious contestant for rasic interpretation. This book disputes their claim. Some may cite the two Kashmiris’ view that adbhuta cannot sustain a major work. This book contests that by putting “the work of adbhutarasa” into its title and arguing for the hard work it does. Some may also be uncomfortable with a temporal incongruity the book poses in that the Mahābhārata and Harivaṃśa are probably four or five centuries earlier than the first text to explore rasas, the Nāṭyaśātra. Śāntarasa faced the same problem, but Ānandavardhana and Abhinavagupta, lacking a modern sense of the relative dates, overlooked it. The answer here goes to the heart of this book’s argument: our texts deploy the “proper terms” adbhuta, “wonder,” and vismaya, “surprise,” to work adbhutarasa through rich and contrasting textual strategies. They must have worked out their program with these terms before the śāstra.

Beiriger, Eugene Edward. World War I. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216039273.

Full text
Abstract:
Focusing on the war on the Western and Southern fronts and inclusive of material from all sides of the conflict, this book explores the novels and poems of significant soldier-writers alongside important contemporary historical documents. The literary works of the First World War are one of the richest sources we have for understanding one of the twentieth century's most significant conflicts. Not only do many of them have historical merit, but some were critically acclaimed by both contemporaries and subsequent scholars. For example, Henri Barbusse's Under Fire, one of the earliest novels of the war, won accolades in France and the respect of war poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen as well as novelists Erich Maria Remarque and Ernest Hemingway. This book examines these works and those of war poets Rupert Brooke and John McCrae and others, providing context as well as opportunities to explore thematic elements with primary source documents, such as diaries, letters, memoirs, newspaper and journal articles, speeches, and government publications. It is unique in its use of literary and historical sources as mediums by which to both better understand the literature of the war and use literature to better understand the war itself.

Full text
Abstract:
An all-encompassing book with more than a thousand quotations, this work breathes life into an era unprecedented in world history. Covering all aspects of the war, the volume includes more than 300 individuals from the Allies, the Axis, and the neutrals. It quotes the major political leaders, including Churchill, Hitler, Roosevelt, and Stalin, and military officers—not just Eisenhower, Marshall, and King, but also Montgomery, Rommel, Zhukov, and Yamamoto. It covers historians Shirer, Sherwood, and A.J.P. Taylor, journalists Pyle, Murrow, and Hersey, and diplomats Ciano and Ribbentrop. It also includes little known people—a Comfort Woman and an African American G.I. who watched German POWs eat in a restaurant that barred him. Also featured are a lexicon of slang terms, nicknames, and code words and sections on the movies and songs of the era. Quotations come from traditional sources, enemy documents seized after the war, and hitherto secret archives. They come from speeches, news accounts, memoirs, and interviews, from captured documents and from Ultra and Magic—which broke the German and Japanese secrect codes. This volume is unlike any other book ever compiled on the war. It is for history buffs, World War II buffs, and all libraries.

Proclus. Proclus: Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus Volume 4: Book 3, Part 2: Proclus on the World Soul. Edited by Dirk Baltzly. Cambridge University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9780511691812.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present volume Proclus describes the 'creation' of the soul that animates the entire universe. This is not a literal creation, for Proclus argues that Plato means only to convey the eternal dependence of the World Soul upon higher causes. In his exegesis of Plato's text, Proclus addresses a range of issues in Pythagorean harmonic theory, as well as questions about the way in which the World Soul knows both forms and the visible reality that comprises its body. This part of Proclus' Commentary is particularly responsive to the interpretive tradition that precedes it. As a result, this volume is especially significant for the study of the Platonic tradition from the earliest commentators onwards.
