Abstract:
Since antiquity, the issue of the inconsistency between the Book of Nahum and the Book of Jonah has been addressed, one regarding both its content and its message. At various times, it was settled in different ways. The current state of biblical research seems to allow us to put forth a daring thesis that both Books have more in common than merely Nineveh as the subject matter, which they approach from a different angle. There seem to be grounds to see these two Books as vestiges of an intracanonical debate waged within the Book of the Twelve.

Abstract:
Today, when many other organizations and institutions would like to promote themselves as “family,” Scripture tells us that in many significant ways, the church is to live its life out like a family. Joseph Hellerman has written two books in this area that Stephen J. Kemp reflects on in this extended book review essay. We hope it will be of help to you in thinking through ways to both better integrate family ministry in the life of the church, and help our churches live out the family relationship God has called us to. - Editor

Abstract:
This study investigates two different ways of representing translation histories, namely, self-representation and other- representation. Moreover, this paper sheds some light on a part of the translation history during the Islamic golden age, specifically, the Abbasid Era. The current study analyzes two different books about the translation history during the Abbasid Era: O’Leary’s book (How Greek Science Passed to the Arabs, 1949) and Al-Khalili’s book (The House of Wisdom: How Arabic Science saved Ancient Knowledge and Gave Us the Renaissance, 2011). The purpose of the analysis is to gain a hint about how people write the history of translation and what factors, either cultural or ideological, interfered in shaping that history. Moreover, considering Al-Khalili’s book as an example of self-representation and O’Leary’s book as an example of other-representation should help in revealing types of convergences and divergences between these two books in representing translation history. The results of the analysis show that there were instances of convergences and divergences between these two books in representing translation history.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis undertakes to explore silence as it functions in relation to intimacy in Clarice Lispector’s last narrative. It asks how silence, when perceived as a generative force, may cultivate intimacy between men and women, opening up a horizon of equality and exchange between the sexes. Using Lispector’s work as a symbolic location for asking larger questions about the role of Eros in contemporary literature, the first chapter is dedicated to introducing her work as it relates to the critical canon. After examining silence and intimacy as each have been conceptualized by thinkers from various philosophical traditions, I incorporate the recent work of Luce Irigaray, which has integrated Western discourse and Eastern mystical concepts of the intimate to articulate a new kind of male/female reciprocity. I apply Irigarayan theory to Lispector’s text as a way of enriching the academic scholarship regarding Lispector.

Lindstrom, David James. "Two Ways of Burning a Cotton Field." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3671.

Full text
Abstract:
TWO WAYS OF BURNING A COTTON FIELD is an ethnographic memoir concerning the narrator’s experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, South America. The plot is structured around a moral crisis in his rural Paraguayan village. The narrator’s neighbor, a man in his late twenties, threatened to kill his partner and her two children. The Paraguayan police were made aware of the situation but did nothing. Peace Corps management also instructed the narrator to do nothing. In TWO WAYS OF BURNING A COTTON FIELD, this moral crisis is explored within the contexts of post-colonial power structures, including economic and ecologic geographies, intersections of community and government, and the colonial-indigenous language continuum of Paraguay (Spanish-Guaraní). Further, these neighbors’ localized trauma is located within historical, colonial trauma. Of particular concern is the role that languages – English, Spanish, and Guaraní – play in constructing power, worldview, and relationships within the village.

This thesis investigates the number of individuals involved in the making of the Book of Kells. It demonstrates that only two individuals, identified as the Scribe-Artist and the Master-Artist, were involved in its creation. It also demonstrates that the script is the work of a single individual - the Scribe-Artist. More specific questions are answered regarding the working relationships between the book’s creators and the sequence of production. This thesis also demonstrates that the manuscript was created over two separate campaigns of work. The comprehensive nature of this study focuses on all aspects of the manuscript including, script, initials, display-lettering, decoration and illumination.

Ogunnaike, Oludamini. "Sufism and Ifa: Ways of Knowing in Two West African Intellectual Traditions." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:23845406.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines and compares the epistemologies of two of the most popular West African intellectual traditions: Tijani Sufism and Ifa. Employing theories native to the traditions themselves and contemporary oral and textual sources, I examine how these traditions answer the questions: What is knowledge? How is it acquired? And How is it verified? Or more simply, “What do you know?,” “How did you come to know it?,” and “How do you know that you know?” After analyzing each tradition separately, and on its own terms, I compare them to each other and to certain contemporary, Western theories. Despite having relatively limited historical contact, I conclude that the epistemologies of both traditions are based on forms of self-knowledge in which the knowing subject and known object are one. As a result, ritual practices that transform the knowing subject are key to cultivating these modes of knowledge. Therefore I argue that like the philosophical traditions of Greek antiquity, the intellectual or philosophical dimensions of Tijani Sufism and Ifa must be understood and should be studied as a part of a larger project of ritual self-transformation designed to cultivate an ideal mode of being, or way of life, which is also an ideal mode of knowing. I further assert that both traditions offer distinct and compelling perspectives on, and approaches to, metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, psychology, and ritual practice, which I suggest and begin to develop through comparison.<br>African and African American Studies

Abstract:
AbstractThis introduction sets the context for why climate change is a major issue for Indigenous peoples today. The key terms commonly used in the climate change and adaptation policy arena are identified and the fact there is a difference between Western and Indigenous constructions of them is highlighted. We argue this clash between ontological and epistemological understandings of climate change has had the effect of under-estimating or making less visible Indigenous agency and responses to climate change. We then introduce the central argument for this book, which is that climate adaptation for Indigenous peoples is not a new concept, nor is it only grounded in climate change contexts. Instead, climate adaptation for Indigenous peoples embodies all the old ways of seeing and doing but deployed in contemporary ways.

AbstractStudies on participation tend to focus on describing the process. The exact form of their involvement, along with its effects on architecture and the lived environment, is rarely discussed. The aim of this article is to better understand the effects of participation in the long run after the initial involvement. This will be done by studying three rehabilitation projects in the Paris region. Our aim was to gather the opinions of those who had not made their voices heard through the official channels of consultation. Above all, it was to give visibility to, and understand the meanings of, the appropriation of spaces which have become invisible simply because they are used in ways which seem to go against the norm.

Abstract:
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected children and their families. One of the many challenges families faced was limited or no access to age-appropriate reading material. On the one hand, sales data show that sales of children’s books, in particular activity books, increased markedly during lockdowns. On the other hand, spaces which grant children and families free access to books, such as daycare centers, schools, and public libraries, were closed for weeks at a time. This chapter sketches out the central role of books and reading in families as a pathway to literacy, education, and general well-being and draws on concepts such as book deserts and “book hunger” (Shaver 2020), before discussing the repercussions of limited book accessibility for families during the pandemic. Educational experts have hypothesized that children will experience a “COVID slide” in reading and that existing inequalities in reading progress will be exacerbated by prolonged shutdowns. The contribution also shows, however, how institutions and foundations, as well as individuals, have made books available to children and families in creative and pragmatic ways despite COVID-induced restrictions.

Abstract:
Between the 780s and the 840s the episcopal see of Verona was held by bishops coming from beyond the Alps, appointed by the Carolingian rulers and charged with control over a prestigious and strategically key bishopric. They were called upon to boost the communications between the local elites and the political and social machinery of the Carolingian world. In order to achieve that, they first had to negotiate their own integration in their new field of action, and to be acknowledged as effective political mediators between Verona and the rulers. The tools they used to do that were, on the one hand, their own skills and previous experience, on the other, the centre for textual production, preservation and dissemination they found in Verona, that is, the cathedral scriptorium and library. The books that can be attributed to them allow us to keep trace of the networks of relationships and cultural exchanges they developed, linking the two sides of the Alps. This paper focuses more specifically on the activities and endeavours of Bishop Ratold (c. 802-840). The liturgical and hagiographical manuscripts produced in Verona in that period are examined as key markers of Ratold’s intellectual networks, and of the ways in which he used them for his own need for self-integration. They also provide elements casting light on the introduction and reception of the Carolingian cultural reforms in the Kingdom of Italy.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Slavic grammar books of the 16th-17th centuries, the category of dual was represented in the fi rst Slovenian grammar book «Arcticae horulae succisivae» (1584, Wit-tenberg) by the Protestant grammarian A. Bohorič (1520 –1588) and in the grammar book of the Church Slavonic lan-guage «Slavonic Grammar with Correct Syntax» (1619, Jevje) by M. Smotrytsky (1578–1633 (?)).It was assumed earlier that the Slovenian grammar had had a possible impact on Smotrytsky’s Grammar. However, the analysis of the dual forms in Bohorič’s G r a m m a r and Smotrytsky’s Grammar showed that such an impact was most likely impossible. When creating their gram-mar books, the authors were guided by different aims: if A. Bohorič was following the practice of using the forms of a living language, then Smotrytsky was orienting towards the fi xed stable forms of dead written language.

Abstract:
The methods in which e-books can be purchased vary greatly compared to print books. In the past, a print book was purchased either as an individual title (firm order) or through an approval plan. Once the books were received, there was little deviation in how the items were processed – purchase orders were created, books were processed, invoices were input and paid. However, with e-books, the work is more complex and there are a many ways to purchase e-books – firm order, Demand (or Patron) Driven Acquisiton (DDA), Evidence Based Acquisition (EBA), yearly front-file purchases, back-file purchases, or subscription to e-book packages. Each of the methods involves a workflow that goes from easy to somewhat complex. This begs the question of whether the acquisitions workflow can or should influence how e-books are purchased.

Abstract:
Interactive digital book was produced on the topics importance of statistics and presentation of information, for the statistical subjects taught at the Faculty of Higher Studies Cuautitlán, the book was made with an interactive approach, that is, in most chapters there are HTML5 objects that students can access by connecting to the Internet from any mobile device or PC. The themes of this interactive book were statistics, variables and measurement levels, pie graph, bar graph, histogram, dot graph, stem and leaf graph, line graph and form. The interactive digital book contemplates that each chapter indicates prerequisites, learning objectives, written development of the topic in the form of questions and answers, videos with explanation, interactive exercises, widget (html 5, interactive galleries, interactive images, etc.) review questions, internet activities and resources. The interactive digital book will offer students a full-screen experience with galleries, videos, interactive diagrams, mathematical expressions and more, these books bring content to life in ways that a printed page cannot. Students will no longer be limited to static images illustrating traditional texts, but can now immerse themselves in an image with interactive captions, bringing an answer to life in a chapter review. They can flip through a book by simply sliding a finger on the screen. They can also highlight text, take notes, search for content, and find definitions in a glossary very easily. Plus, they can take them wherever they go, allowing students to learn not only within the classroom walls, but also in the virtual space that these books make up.

Abstract:
These are the advantages of technology: multimedia presentation, interaction, personalization, etc. Within this context an interactive digital book of the characteristics of the information was realized. In a data set, the following characteristics are usually of paramount importance: 1. the center, 2. the variation, 3. the distribution, 4. the atypical values and 5. The characteristics of the data that change over time. It is important to understand the standard deviation values using tools such as the general rule of rank. Because technology allows us to get many of these statistics automatically, it is not so important to memorize formulas or perform complex arithmetic calculations by hand on the other hand, so that the students can concentrate on understanding and interpreting the values that are obtained from them. The interactive digital book of measures of central tendency contemplates that each chapter indicates prerequisites, learning objectives, written development of the subject, videos with explanation, interactive exercises, widget (html 5. Interactive galleries, interactive images, etc.) review questions. The interactive digital book will provide students with full-screen experience with galleries, videos, interactive diagrams, 3D objects, and math expressions and more; these books give life to the content in ways that a printed page can not do. Students will no longer be limited to static images that illustrate traditional texts, but can now immerse themselves in an image with interactive subtitles, rotate a 3D object or make an answer come to life in a chapter review. You can flip through a book with a single finger on the screen. They can also highlight text, take notes, look up content and find definitions in a glossary very easily. In addition, they can take them wherever they go, which will allow students not only to learn between the walls of the classroom, but also in the virtual space that make up these books.

Doğan Avcıoğlu, says in his famous book, Regime of Turkey that Turkey has oriental roots with attempts to cope to occidental cultures. Since westernization was always conceptualized as economic growtIn and development from the Ottoman times to young Turkish Republic western values and techniques were modified to our country. Although we accomplished in surface the oreintalist roots remained in the core of social structure of country. Thus Turkey attemted to organize capitalist western economic structure in eastern habits. In this study I aim to give some projections for coming decades under those arguments.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract CAD systems that make suggestions to designers are investigated as an aid to preliminary design and computational tool for concurrent engineering. A system-user test was performed with such a system configured to provide suggestions in three ways: during preliminary design, after preliminary design, and not at all. Five users were tested with each mode. All were given the same design assignment, and all were allowed to refer to the standard book-form concurrent engineering information. The two user groups that received suggestions produced more good designs than did the unaided group. There was little distinction in quality, however, between the two aided groups. Additionally, users that received suggestions stopped using the book-form information very early in the design process and relied solely on the system’s assistance. These results demonstrate that suggestion-making systems can integrate concurrent engineering information into the preliminary design process.

Abstract:
As life-long learning has become a reality of our lives, people try to find new ways of learning, without any major interference in their everyday life. Also, nowadays people explore new ways of training, from self-teaching to MOOCs, as a modern alternative for the classical library. As it is much easier to publish a manuscript on-line, thus being reduced the difficulties of working with a publishing house, there is a new wave of authors whose books you can order only as an e-book or, even easier, as a pdf document. They attract much of their clients with blogs where from sometimes you can download these books for free. Also, some send free newsletters on certain topics, related to those referred to in larger volumes. Although some may regard these products as unreliable, their public is larger than one would consider at a first glance. We tried to identify some of such authors and their blogs and electronic books in order to analyze them, establish their main topics and the public they write for. We tried to find out their background, as a foundation for what they offer in the virtual learning area. We also investigated internet users' opinion about the most visited blogs and the products offered by their owners. Another key point was the age of those interested in improving certain aspects of their personal or professional lives by using blogs or other on-line materials. The paper ends with a discussion about what makes a blog more attractive and more appealing and its readers to come back again and again to it.

Oza, Shardul, and Jacobus Cilliers. What Did Children Do During School Closures? Insights from a Parent Survey in Tanzania. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-ri_2021/027.

Full text
Abstract:
In this Insight Note, we report results of a phone survey that the RISE Tanzania Research team conducted with 2,240 parents (or alternate primary care-givers) of primary school children following the school closures in Tanzania. After the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Tanzania on 16 March 2020, the government ordered all primary schools closed the following day. Schools remained closed until 29 June 2020. Policymakers and other education stakeholders were concerned that the closures would lead to significant learning loss if children did not receive educational support or engagement at home. To help stem learning loss, the government promoted radio, TV, and internet-based learning content to parents of school-age children. The primary aims of the survey were to understand how children and families responded to the school closures, the education related activities they engaged in, and their strategies to send children back to school. The survey also measures households’ engagement with remote learning content over the period of school closures. We supplement the findings of the parent survey with insights from interviews with Ward Education Officers about their activities during the school closures. The survey sample is comprised of primary care-givers (in most cases, parents) of students enrolled in Grades 3 and 4 during the 2020 school year. The survey builds on an existing panel of students assessed in 2019 and 2020 in a nationally representative sample of schools.4 The parent surveys were conducted using Computer Assisted Telephonic Interviewing (CATI) over a two-week period in early September 2020, roughly two months after the re-opening of primary schools. We report the following key findings from this survey: *Almost all (more than 99 percent) of children in our sample were back in school two months after schools re-opened. The vast majority of parents believed it was either safe or extremely safe for their children to return to school. *Only 6 percent of households reported that their children listened to radio lessons during the school closures; and a similar fraction (5.5 percent) tuned into TV lessons over the same period. Less than 1 percent of those surveyed accessed educational programmes on the internet. Households with access to radio or TV reported higher usage. *Approximately 1 in 3 (36 percent) children worked on the family farm during the closures, with most children working either 2 or 3 days a week. Male children were 6.2 percentage points likelier to work on the family farm than female children. *Households have limited access to education materials for their child. While more than 9 out of 10 households have an exercise book, far fewer had access to textbooks (35 percent) or own reading books (31 percent). *One in four parents (24 percent) read a book to their child in the last week.
