Dulaney, Susan Katherine. "Clarice Lispector's an Apprenticeship, or the Book of Delights: The Role of Silence in the Cultivation of Intimacy"." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2008. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_theses/34.

Abstract:
This thesis undertakes to explore silence as it functions in relation to intimacy in Clarice Lispector’s last narrative. It asks how silence, when perceived as a generative force, may cultivate intimacy between men and women, opening up a horizon of equality and exchange between the sexes. Using Lispector’s work as a symbolic location for asking larger questions about the role of Eros in contemporary literature, the first chapter is dedicated to introducing her work as it relates to the critical canon. After examining silence and intimacy as each have been conceptualized by thinkers from various philosophical traditions, I incorporate the recent work of Luce Irigaray, which has integrated Western discourse and Eastern mystical concepts of the intimate to articulate a new kind of male/female reciprocity. I apply Irigarayan theory to Lispector’s text as a way of enriching the academic scholarship regarding Lispector.

Lindstrom, David James. "Two Ways of Burning a Cotton Field." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3671.

Full text
Abstract:
TWO WAYS OF BURNING A COTTON FIELD is an ethnographic memoir concerning the narrator’s experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, South America. The plot is structured around a moral crisis in his rural Paraguayan village. The narrator’s neighbor, a man in his late twenties, threatened to kill his partner and her two children. The Paraguayan police were made aware of the situation but did nothing. Peace Corps management also instructed the narrator to do nothing. In TWO WAYS OF BURNING A COTTON FIELD, this moral crisis is explored within the contexts of post-colonial power structures, including economic and ecologic geographies, intersections of community and government, and the colonial-indigenous language continuum of Paraguay (Spanish-Guaraní). Further, these neighbors’ localized trauma is located within historical, colonial trauma. Of particular concern is the role that languages – English, Spanish, and Guaraní – play in constructing power, worldview, and relationships within the village.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the number of individuals involved in the making of the Book of Kells. It demonstrates that only two individuals, identified as the Scribe-Artist and the Master-Artist, were involved in its creation. It also demonstrates that the script is the work of a single individual - the Scribe-Artist. More specific questions are answered regarding the working relationships between the book’s creators and the sequence of production. This thesis also demonstrates that the manuscript was created over two separate campaigns of work. The comprehensive nature of this study focuses on all aspects of the manuscript including, script, initials, display-lettering, decoration and illumination.

Ogunnaike, Oludamini. "Sufism and Ifa: Ways of Knowing in Two West African Intellectual Traditions." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:23845406.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines and compares the epistemologies of two of the most popular West African intellectual traditions: Tijani Sufism and Ifa. Employing theories native to the traditions themselves and contemporary oral and textual sources, I examine how these traditions answer the questions: What is knowledge? How is it acquired? And How is it verified? Or more simply, “What do you know?,” “How did you come to know it?,” and “How do you know that you know?” After analyzing each tradition separately, and on its own terms, I compare them to each other and to certain contemporary, Western theories. Despite having relatively limited historical contact, I conclude that the epistemologies of both traditions are based on forms of self-knowledge in which the knowing subject and known object are one. As a result, ritual practices that transform the knowing subject are key to cultivating these modes of knowledge. Therefore I argue that like the philosophical traditions of Greek antiquity, the intellectual or philosophical dimensions of Tijani Sufism and Ifa must be understood and should be studied as a part of a larger project of ritual self-transformation designed to cultivate an ideal mode of being, or way of life, which is also an ideal mode of knowing. I further assert that both traditions offer distinct and compelling perspectives on, and approaches to, metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, psychology, and ritual practice, which I suggest and begin to develop through comparison.<br>African and African American Studies

Abstract:
On the other hand, thermochemical reactions (chemical adsorption processes and solid-gas chemicals reactions) open a new way for long-term solar heat storage in residential areas. The present work gives a review of the experimental research on thermal energy storage systems with thermochemical materials (TCM). Moreover, this work describes the experimental characterisation of MgSO4•7H2O, Al2(SO4)3•18H2O, CaCl2•2H2O and MgCl2•6H2O to determine is suitability for application in a seasonal solar heat storage system. Steager, Tabitha Youngreen. "(Re)making place on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia : a tale told two ways." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/51242.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD dissertation is an ethnography of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. Based on fourteen months of fieldwork, this dissertation explores how people define, imagine, and create place on Salt Spring Island and why creating place matters. I use the importance my research participants place on local food as a particular lens to give focus to this exploration of how place is made and re-made. Definitions of Salt Spring Island are complex and often contested and competing. On an island known for its physical beauty as well as an “alternative” approach to social relations and politics, Salt Spring Island is also a place where economic development competes with environmental preservation, affluence intersects with poverty, and residents grapple with concepts of insider versus outsider. Using in-depth ethnographic research methods that included long-term research in residence on Salt Spring Island as well as participatory visual ethnographic methods, I explore these contestations of place and examine how people mobilize various means to define Salt Spring Island for themselves. Using Salt Spring Island as an example, I attempt to show that the creation of place is one fraught with conscious and unconscious arguments about who has the right and the power to define place. Ultimately the place that I describe within this ethnography is one that I have co-created with my research participants during a particular space in time and it is therefore unique, as all of our experiences with place must be. In addition to the ethnography, this dissertation also attempts to tell a story about Salt Spring Island in an experimental manner using photographs made by participants and researcher, constructing a purely visual ethnography that is meant to be interpreted by the reader. In so doing, an additional definition or experience of place is created by each reader, thus further developing the exploration of how we create place.<br>Graduate Studies, College of (Okanagan)<br>Graduate

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] My focus has been twofold. On the one hand I have highlighted and elucidated the events which Pachymerēs narrates, glossing with prosopographical and topological notes the people, places and things mentioned in the text, and explaining other esoteric details, such as the range of many and varied, ornate Byzantine court honorifics. On the other hand I have made a critical comparison between Pachymerēs and the other important sources for the period, Greek, Western, and Eastern, to provide explanations for differences in the various narratives, to suggest which source is the more accurate for any given event, and to fill up the narrative ‘gaps’ of Gomme .... I must stress that both by training and inclination I am an historian, not a philologist, so the commentary will be historical rather than philological. This is despite the importance Pachymerēs himself places in the clever use of language and his frequent use of allusions to and quotes from other works, Classical, Byzantine or biblical. The question of mimēsis, how much Pachymerēs is directly trying to imitate or incorporate older texts, has received limited attention, and only where Pachymerēs’ use of the earlier text is vital to the understanding of his own work. Similarly, questions of language, and the way in which Pachymerēs uses it, have not been explored except in those instances where it directly affects the historical point our author is making. Pachymerēs’ Historia is an important source for a pivotal period in Byzantine Imperial history, and many scholars have not used it as efficiently as they could due to the denseness of his prose and his “tortuous syntax” (Bartusis 1992:55) ...

Awad, S. "An ethnographic study of the ways in which faith is manifested in two primary schools." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2015. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4577/.

Abstract:
Fostering religious commitment in schools and considering children’s cultural diversity arguably enhances pupils’ tolerance and integration, which may have the potential to reduce racism and discrimination. Faith schools are religiously and culturally diverse institutions and typically appreciated for their core values, good behaviour and academic standards. However, their impact on school culture and ethos is under explored. Although, the role of faith has gained attention both in policy and practice, relatively little is known about its impact in the context of primary education. As such, this research explores the complex influence of faith on school culture and ethos. In addition, critical analysis is undertaken to investigate the impact of faith on pupils’ behaviour and understanding in school. The main research aims are to: explore the multiple ways in which faith is manifested in two schools, determine the influence of faith on school culture and ethos, and establish the impact of faith on pupils’ behaviours and understanding in school. This research takes an ethnographic approach to explore how faith is manifested in two primary schools in the North West of England. The ethnography enabled a deeper immersion in to the school culture as data were generated through observations, interviews, focus groups and documentary analysis in two schools: A denomination school, Church of England, and a community school with an Islamic ethos. The research was conducted in the North West of England which has many diverse faith-based schools. Critical Race and Feminist Theories were used as lenses of analysis to examine faith in school. Critical Race Theory is a framework employed to examine the role of race and power in education. This research provides rich ethnographic description and analysis of faith as understood, practiced and experienced in the two schools. The findings reveal two major themes, first, a mismatch between school policy/values and its practice. Second, a lack of integration of staff and children into the school. Despite schools’ efforts to embrace diversity and encourage integration, schools policies were found to be empty rhetoric with regards to fostering religious commitment and cultural diversity. Exploring the issue of recognising cultural diversity within schools, findings indicated that both schools did not acknowledge or teach other cultural traditions, therefore, impacting on issues of integration. Poor behaviour, bullying and racism amongst children were major issues at both schools. Data analysis suggests the source of misbehaviour was due to the lack of emphasis placed on teaching about different religions, insufficient knowledge of cultural traditions and lack of visits to places of worship. This research concludes that there is a need for schools to develop awareness of religions and cultural diversity; thereby, encouraging integration, community cohesion and respect for similarities and differences.

Csepregi, András. "Two ways to freedom : Christianity and democracy in the thought of István Bibó and Dietrich Bonhoeffer." Thesis, Durham University, 2002. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3842/.

Full text
Abstract:
The broad scope of my study is the encounter of Christian theology and democratic social theory. Within this area I relate as well as compare to each other the thoughts of the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the political thinker István Bibó. The possibility of the comparison is supported by the fact that both thinkers elaborated a characteristic understanding and concept of freedom on whose basis they investigated a viable political order for post-war Europe. Their understanding of freedom was significantly different and this difference became manifest in the manner of the political reconstruction they proposed. In my analysis of some early writings and wartime considerations of the two thinkers, my main concern is to reveal the relationship of thelogical reasoning and political argumentation, both within the two thinkers' own thoughts and in their encounter. In the first chapter I create an elementary map of the development of the mutual influence of Christianity and democracy. Here I venture to understand democracy from a Christian point of view as tradition, vision, system and process. In the second chapter I show the relationship between Bibó's concept of freedom and his democratic theory. The third and the fourth chapters are devoted to an analysis of Bonhoeffer's theology that was determined by definite political values already at their roots. I conclude that despite several converging elements in their thinking and understanding of the challenge of the times, some fundamental differences remain in the political theories of Bibó and Bonhoeffer, which have their roots in their opposing understanding of freedom.

Barber, Peter John. "Rediscovering the meaning of John 6:53 : the two ways, the Lord's ambivalent table, and mimetic theory." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42111.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is the meaning of John 6:53: “So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you’” (NRSV). This verse is the crux interpretum of John 6:51-58, and of the midrash this passage concludes (John 6:31-58). It is also a verse that many Johannine scholars agree remains to be understood in context. The verse expresses language of sanctioned violence and cannibalism, language of gaining life through devouring a fellow mortal. Should Jesus’ statement be taken literally, metaphorically, or both? Does Jesus refer only to himself with the term ‘son of Man’, or to mortals generally, or both? Does the literary background alluded to in this verse and its context shed light on these questions? The close and broad socio-literary contexts should help the reader with these interpretive decisions. René Girard’s anthropology of violence and religion was formed to address the matter of sanctioned violence and the language used to articulate it. It is therefore the tool employed here, in combination with the subverted combat myth tradition of the Hebrew Bible, to address the question of the intended meaning of John 6:53. Reading through the lens of mimetic theory, I propose that this verse as part of a Passover midrash expresses a contrast of two types of modus vivendi (e.g. John 6:27), or the biblical theme of the ‘two ways’. These ways complement two types of ‘imitation’ for gaining ‘being’ as described by Girard’s mimetic theory: internal mimesis as a way of death, and external mimesis as a way of life. In John 6:53, Jesus describes both ways in one breath as part of a test for his audience.

Cheng, Joey T. "Two ways to the top : evidence that dominance and prestige are distinct yet viable avenues to social rank." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44778.

Full text
Abstract:
The pursuit of social rank is a recurrent and pervasive challenge faced by individuals in all human societies. Yet, the precise means through which individuals compete for social standing remains unclear. Chapters 2 and 3 addressed this question and examined the impact of two fundamental strategies—Dominance (the use of force and intimidation to induce fear) and Prestige (the sharing of expertise or know-how to gain respect)—on the attainment of social rank, among a group of individuals who interacted over a collaborative group task. Consistent with this theoretical framework, the adoption of either a Dominance or Prestige strategy promoted perceptions of greater influence as rated by both group members and outside observers, higher levels of actual impact over the group’s decision-making (Chapter 2), and increased visual attention from observers whose gaze was monitored with an eye-tracking device (Chapter 3). Subsequent studies explored the ethological underpinnings of these rank-attaining strategies by examining the verbal styles and nonverbal behaviors displayed by Dominant and Prestigious individuals during the group interactions. Detailed behavioral coding revealed that whereas Dominance was signaled through intimidating and self-entitling verbal styles and spatially expansive and aggressive postural displays, Prestige was signaled through socially attractive and self-deprecating verbal styles and confidence-signaling nonverbal movements (Chapters 4-5). Furthermore, Dominant individuals signaled their formidability by lowering their vocal pitch during the initial minutes of the group interaction (Chapter 6). In contrast, Prestige was not systematically associated with alterations in pitch. Collectively, these studies demonstrate that Dominance and Prestige are independent yet both viable strategies for ascending the social hierarchy, and are each underpinned by distinct, theoretically predictable patterns of verbal styles and nonverbal behaviors.

Hills, Sehten Porshe. "Things Fall Apart & Heart of Darkness : Colonialism: Presenting the same universal ethic in two diametrically opposite ways." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Avdelningen för humaniora, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-29327.

Full text
Abstract:
This research paper will examine the representation of colonialism in the narratives Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The aim of this Analysis is to demonstrate that both Achebe and Conrad expressed the same universal ethic in two diametrically opposite ways. The term “universal ethic” refers to the evil that is associated with colonialism, and “evil” represents the psychological, physical and emotional trauma that was suffered by both the colonizers and the colonized people. Therefore, as the basis for analysis, this research uses the psychological, emotional and physical criticisms to expose the evil of colonialism. As a postcolonial, Achebe’s opposition to the concept of colonialism is represented by the psychological and emotional collapse of the Igbo natives in Things Fall Apart. As for Joseph Conrad, a colonizer who was sent to the Congo, the physical abuse of the natives represents the evil of colonialism in Heart of Darkness. Achebe criticizes the evil of colonialism as a postcolonial, while Conrad criticizes the evil of colonialism as a colonial. This research was conducted exclusively with the support of textbooks and internet articles as well as Webb publications that address the concepts of postcolonialism and colonialism. A total of six (6) recognized books, as well as twelve (12) Webb publications, were used as references to support the postcolonial theory in this analysis. In addition, this research features twelve pages of close reading that examines the psychological, emotional and physical criticism of colonialism that are used to defend the thesis. Correspondingly, the conclusion is established based on the suitability of the findings. It is then concluded that the evil of colonialism is expressed by Chinua Achebe and Joseph Conrad in two diametrically opposite ways in Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness respectively.

Full text
Abstract:
The IgH locus in mouse and human has a 3' regulatory region (3'RR) with multiple DNaseI hypersensitive sites. In the human, but not in the mouse, the sites (HS3, HS1.2 and HS4) are duplicated. One unit is downstream of the Cα-1 gene and a second unit is downstream of the Cα-2 gene. Human HS1,2 enhancers show polymorphic features. In the mouse, HS3A, HS1.2, HS3B and HS4 are enhancers involved in the expression and class switching of immunoglobulin heavy chain genes. A recently identified downstream region, which contains hypersensitive sites HS5, HS6 and HS7, has been hypothesized to serve as an insulator of the Igh locus. This downstream region is associated with marks of active chromatin throughout B cell development and contains binding sites for CTCF, a protein associated with mammalian insulators. CTCF binding to many of its cognate DNA sites is prevented by DNA methylation. Previous studies using genomic Southern analysis have shown changes in DNA methylation in the upstream region of the murine 3' RR during B cell development. In the first part of this work I identified the polymorphic structure of human HS1,2, and its distribution in some populations and in some immunological diseases. The data suggest that the HS1,2 enhancer that lies downstream of the Cα-1 gene has four alleles, one of which, allele *2, is more frequent in some immunological disorders and less frequent in the sub-Saharan region. I have also observed using EMSA that protein binding is different in the four alleles. Furthermore I have studied changes in DNA methylation in the murine 3'RR during B cell development by digesting genomic DNA with methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes, such as HpaII and MaeII, followed by PCR. The data revealed that the 3’RR is methylated in embryonic stem cells. ES cells derived from histone H1 depleted mice showed a reduction in methylation as compared to their respective wildtype counterparts. I have detected a progressive loss of DNA methylation during B cell development. DNase I HS sites HS4, HS5 and HS7 are the earliest regulated and unmethylated sites in cell lines reflecting early stages of B development, while the HS1.2 and HS3B enhancers are unmethylated 3 only in plasma cell lines. DNA methylation is also reduced in splenic

Abstract:
This thesis compares various aspects of the preaching ministries conducted by two Methodist contemporaries, preachers, and professed ‘men of one book’, John Wesley and George Whitefield.  One of the principal ways in which Wesley and Whitefield manifested their desire to be ‘men of one book’ was through a life-long commitment to itinerant preaching.  Indeed it was especially in their capacity as ‘preachers of one book’ that Wesley and Whitefield feature so prominently in an evangelical revival that spanned not only England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the American colonies, but also included Calvinists and Armenians.  But even though itinerant preaching occupied privileged place in the efforts of Wesley and Whitefield to further evangelical revival, their public ministries did not consist wholly of spoken sermons.  Instead, both deliberately pursued a ‘print and preach’ ministry, where their published sermons complemented and reinforced the sermons they preached. In order to remain sensitive to their dual commitment to the spoken and printed work, and in response to the conspicuous paucity of intentionally comparative studies that focus on the full-orbed preaching ministries conducted by these two Church of England clergymen, this thesis compares Wesley’s and Whitefield’s style, delivery and rationale for field-preaching, paying particular attention to the influence of Scripture on these facets of their spoken sermons.  In addition, various aspects of their sermons as they appear in printed form are compared.  This includes a comparison of the function of their published sermons within their wider ministries, how their printed sermons reflected the way they used, applied and interpreted the Bible, and also how they understood its prominent doctrines.  Ultimately, Wesley and Whitefield manifested their singular desire to be men of one book through preaching ministries that were by no means identical, yet equally committed to the spread of the gospel throughout the transatlantic world.

Rodriguez, Gonzalez Yasmilde. "Cited2 and PFTAIRE, Two Ways in Which Cyclin Dependent Kinases Impact on Development and Degeneration in the Central Nervous System." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/19815.

Full text
Abstract:
Cyclin dependent kinases (Cdks) belong to a large family of evolutionary conserved kinases that are at times divided into mitotic and post-mitotic Cdks, classifications based on their expression/function profile. Neuroblast proliferation rates, differentiation, developmental apoptosis, migration, axogenesis and maintenance are some of the processes which Cdks regulate in the Central Nervous System (CNS). Additionally, Cdks have a role in mature neurons mediating survival/degeneration. Their deregulation has been functionally linked to conditions such as Stroke, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's. However, the mechanisms underlying Cdk's involvement in neurons are far from being clear. Accordingly, this thesis research explored two subjects relevant to the functions of Cdks in the CNS: first, the mechanism through which Cited2, a Cdk4-dependent signal, mediates neuronal apoptosis after DNA damage and second, the potential role of PFTAIRE, a post-mitotic Cdk, in CNS development. Cited2, a CBP (cAMP response element-binding protein-binding protein)/p300 interacting transactivator, was identified as a signal upregulated in neurons after DNA damage. We showed that Cdk4 activation is required for Cited2 upregulation and that this event is upstream of mitochondrial cytochrome c release. Additionally, we report that Cited2 activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor- (PPAR), an activity that proved to be critical for DNA damage-induced death. We show that these two molecules require each other, forming an active complex that ultimately triggers the mitochondrial pathway of death. Our results not only define a novel Cdk4-mediated neuronal prodeath pathway but report for the first time functional data on Cited2 biological roles in neurons. In the second project, we explored the effects of the deficiency of PFTAIRE, a novel Cdk highly expressed in neurons, in development of the Drosophila ventral nerve cord (VNC). Using two different PFTAIRE Drosophila mutant lines, we demonstrated that the deficiency leads to CNS defects as early as stage 11 of embryonic development. Our findings show that PFTAIRE mutation leads to premature axon outgrowth, axon misguidance and defasciculation accompanied by disorganization of neuronal and glial cell bodies that affect both commissural and longitudinal axons of the VNC. Our data confirms for the first time that PFTAIRE has an essential role in CNS developmental processes and it may be required in neurons for proper axogenesis to occur.

Arrington, James N. "The Journey Home: A Root-metaphor Analysis of the 1840 Mormon Manchester Hymn Book." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/412.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1840, apostle missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled, printed, and began distributing a hymnbook that eventually would become the basis for all subsequent LDS hymnbooks published in English in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This thesis, as a contribution to the literature of communication, book history, and hymnology, as well as the intellectual and cultural history of the early years of the LDS Church, focuses on analyzing the poetry of the 1840 Mormon Manchester hymnbook. Using qualitative root-metaphor analysis, the author identified and analyzed expressions, supporting an emergent journey root-metaphor. He then divided the expressions into eight categories, each describing important and distinct aspects of the Journey. These categories include the following: 1) the travelers, 2) the activities on the journey, 3) the way, 4) the destination, 5) the guide, 6) the invitation to come, 7) the motivations, and 8) the lost wanderers. This thesis is based on the assumption that cultures and religions can be understood through the stories they tell. The story of the journey as told through the poetry of the 1840 Manchester hymnbook illuminates one aspect of the religious experience of early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Taken together, the eight aspects of the journey root-metaphor identified in this thesis tell a story about LDS members as travelers on a journey home, who walk on a straight and narrow path, away from a dark and fallen world, through snares, darkness, and other dangers, toward a glorious destination where rest, joy, and other rewards await them. Ultimately the travelers must rise above this world and follow Christ to a place where they may live with God to serve and praise him ever more.

Full text
Abstract:
The Florentine Jew Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968), garnered international acclaim as a composer and performer in the 1920s and 1930s. He studied composition with Ildebrando Pizzetti and became associated with the International Society for Contemporary Music. Castelnuovo-Tedesco received particular attention for his operas, winning the Concorso Lirico Nazionale in 1925 for La Mandragola, and his concertos, with prominent performances by Jascha Heifetz and Andrés Segovia. During the 1930s, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and his family were negatively affected by the Fascist government’s racial laws restricting the rights of Italian Jews. In 1938, after public performances of his music were canceled and his children were forbidden from attending public school, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and his wife Clara decided to immigrate to the United States. They sailed for the U.S. in 1939, settled in Beverly Hills, and gained citizenship in 1946. In 1949, at the end of that turbulent decade, Castelnuovo-Tedesco completed his first oratorio, The Book of Ruth. This study features a new edition of The Book of Ruth, the first complete publication of the work in full score. The edition is accompanied by a musical analysis that examines melody, harmony, rhythm, text setting, vocal texture, orchestration, and formal design in The Book of Ruth, comparing it with his other works. Furthermore, selected passages from Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s autobiography, newly translated into English, provide insight into the eventful decade preceding the work’s composition and uncover several personal connections that exist between Castelnuovo-Tedesco and the story of The Book of Ruth.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study comprises a comparative visual analysis of three picture books, illustrated by Steven Kellogg, Posy Simmonds and Edward Gorey. The illustrators reinterpret the cautionary tale, Matilda, who told lies and was burned to death by Hilaire Belloc (1908). Not only does this study present a brief historical overview of the genre but it also interrogates the manner in which different styles of illustration underscore the pedagogical didactic narrative. The visual interpretations of these three illustrators are compared in order to establish whether or not they have succeeded in sustaining the subversive or grotesque elements of this cautionary tale. Belloc’s narrative as well as the illustrations are analysed in terms of gender. I discuss my own version of Belloc’s cautionary tale as a parody of this tale that serves to exaggerate the sometimes overt gendering of girl characters in cautionary tales.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie skripsie behels die visuele analise van drie verskillende prenteboeke, onderskeidelik geillustreer deur Steven Kellogg, Posy Simmonds en Edward Gorey.

Abstract:
This study focuses on connection between socioeconomic factors and the didactic choices in the English language teaching in lower primary school. The aim of the study is to examine if and how these choices differ between a charity-based school and a non-charity based (private) school in a slum area in Kenya, based on the reflections of teachers. Furthermore the aim is to investigate the motives or reasons behind the didactic choices, as expressed by the teachers during the interviews, and how these are possible to relate to the economic and social situation of the schools and the children. The research questions for the study was what the similarities and the differences are in how the lower primary teachers in an informal school compared with a private school in a rural area in Kenya reflect on their didactic approach in the subject English. The second question is how their reflections and didactic choices can be understood in relation to the economic and social conditions that characterize each school. The method used was a qualitative multi case study where the data collection was made by direct observations of four lessons and semi-structured interviews with four teachers, two in each school. The theoretical perspective used was Maslow’s motivation theory about the hierarchy of basic needs (1970, 1987) and the frame factor theory through Löwing (2004) and Knutas (2008). The main findings were that despite the two schools different economical resources and the childrens’ different socioeconomic backgrounds the overall didactic approach was very similar which partly can be explained with social and cultural norms that affect the way of teaching. Another finding was that the biggest obstacle for the language learning was small amount of pre-knowledge which was connected to poor or no use of English at home, and a lack of basic need. These factors were according to the teachers mostly found among the poor or in some way vulnerable children

Abstract:
Background: The monitoring of infectious diseases like the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) using pen-wise oral fluid samples becomes more and more established. The collection of individual oral fluid, which would be useful in the monitoring of PRRSV negative boar studs, is rather difficult. The aim of the study was to test two methods for individual oral fluid collection from pigs and to evaluate the specificity of a commercial ELISA for detection of PRRSV antibodies in these sample matrices. For this reason, 334 serum samples from PRRSV negative pigs (group 1) and 71 serum samples from PRRSV positive pigs (group 2) were tested for PRRSV antibodies with a commercial ELISA. Individual oral fluid was collected with a cotton gauze swab from 311 pigs from group 1 and 39 pigs from group 2. Furthermore, 312 oral fluid samples from group 1 and 67 oral fluid samples from group 2 were taken with a self-drying foam swab (GenoTube). The recollected oral fluid was then analysed twice with a commercial ELISA for detection of PRRSV antibodies in oral fluid.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Although immigrants are an integral part of the nation's founding and history, it is unclear how they have been historically portrayed in children's and young adults' American trade books, especially at the turn of the 20th century. This study offers a critical and comparative analysis focusing on the historical evolution, depiction of immigrants, and authors' perspectives of selected trade books written during two peak United States immigration eras (1880-1930 and 1980-2010s). Utilizing a discourse analysis approach, this study examined how first-generation immigrants were portrayed in selected trade books and how various themes and representations may have affected students and the social studies curriculum. After studying 98 books, it was determined that in both peak immigration eras, first-generation immigrants were depicted as inferior to native-born Americans. Although the time period and countries of origin changed, the issues that immigrants faced and the problems they experienced were similar; first-generation immigrants were scorned, harshly criticized, and viewed as inferior not only by Americans, but also by fellow immigrants who were members of other cultures. Overall, the books left out the immigration experience, and were mostly tales of assimilation and mistreatment in the United States. Because children's ideas and understandings of people and cultural groups are formed by what they learn from others and by the media, it is important that books which portray immigrants and their experience provide accurate and meaningful representations of these individuals. Although many of these books reviewed in this study are considered classics and offer an immense amount of valuable information about historical events which can benefit the social studies curriculum, teachers should be wary of serious overt and covert criticism of ethnicities before introducing them in the classroom. There is a need for literature that sends positive messages about accepting those from other countries and that focuses on how first-generation immigrants helped shape America. Teachers should use trade books in the classroom as they can help children read about history. However, new books need to be written about immigrants. Future research should look into effective ways to use the existing body of trade book literature in the classroom, investigate if (and to what degree) trade books were or are used in schools, compare trade books' portrayal of immigrants to that of textbooks' portrayal, and examine how immigrants were portrayed during the time periods (1940-1970) not covered in this study.

"Is Early L2 Reading of Children’s Literature a Good Idea? : How the attitudes to reading English children’s literature affect book access and teacher-library collaboration in two Swedish primary schools." Abstract:
This case study investigates how teachers’ and school librarians’ attitudes towards L2 reading in years 1-4, as well as their perceived book access and teacher-library collaboration, influence the use and reading of English children’s literature in two Swedish primary schools. This study is motivated by the importance the English language has in Sweden for higher education, the previous research proving powerful language benefits of extensive L2 reading, as well as the recent proposition to strengthen the school library’s role in Sweden. The data collected through qualitative, semi-structured interviews suggests that the participants’ attitudes affect book access, teacher-library collaboration and finally the pupils’ reading of English children’s literature at school. The results show that a confident and positive attitude towards early L2 reading appears to result in more reading, whereas more hesitant attitudes result in less reading. Despite the positive attitudes towards L2 reading in general, most teachers still displayed ambivalent attitudes toward dedicating ample class time to the reading of English children’s literature in the earliest years, often perceiving such reading as too difficult for their pupils. This ambivalence negatively affects the teacher-library collaboration, the inadequate access to physical books catering for the youngest pupils, as well as these learners’ early exposure to English reading. The results indicate that the interpretative nature of the English syllabus has teachers perceive the urgency of reading English children’s literature differently, consequently resulting in different reading practices. In a macro perspective, an unwelcome consequence for Swedish pupils may be an unequal reading preparation for the increasing English demands ahead.

Full text
Abstract:
The Indian residential school (IRS) system is part of Canada’s colonial history; an estimated 150,000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children attended IRS (Stout & Peters, 2011). Informed by Indigenous principles of respect, relevance, responsibility, reciprocity, and relationality (Deloria, 2004; Ermine 1995; Kirkness & Barnhardt, 2001; Wilson, 2008), this study uses classic grounded theory to explore how female IRS survivors or their female descendants are coping with the intergenerational transmission of trauma. Specifically, the general method of comparative analysis was used to generate theory and identify categories and conceptualizations. The emergent problem found that individual survivors and their descendants were dealing with kakwatakih-nipowatisiw, a Cree term used to identify learned colonial (sick) behaviours. These behaviours manifested first among the administrative staff of the schools, then eventually emerged as female generational violence between, for example, mothers and daughters. Indigenous women in this study aimed to resolve this, their ‘main concern’, in order to strengthen familial relations, especially between female family members. Analysis resulted in the identification of a theory derived from the social process of potentializing wellness, which was grounded in the real-world experiences of Indigenous women. Potentializing wellness involves three dimensions: building personal competencies, moral compassing, and fostering virtues. It was revealed that Indigenous women perceive the ongoing generational effects of IRS differently, and as a result, three behavioural typologies emerged: living the norm, between the norm, and escaping the norm. The “norm” refers to the belief that violence is accepted as a normal part of family life. The paradox, of course, is that this type of behaviour is not normal and Indigenous women in this study are looking for ways to eliminate aggressive behaviours between women. The discoveries made in this research, coupled with the final integrative literature review, suggest that Indigenous People’s cultural ways of knowing have a holistic component that addresses all wellness levels. Effective strategies to deal with intergenerational trauma can emerge when holistic health is followed by, or happens concordantly with, reclaiming cultural norms grounded in community and spiritual life. Indigenizing a Western intervention is not enough. Focusing on the spiritual as well as emotional, physical, intellectual, and social aspects of self is seemingly the best approach for Indigenous People who are dealing with the intergenerational effects of trauma.
