Abstract:
Since antiquity, the issue of the inconsistency between the Book of Nahum and the Book of Jonah has been addressed, one regarding both its content and its message. At various times, it was settled in different ways. The current state of biblical research seems to allow us to put forth a daring thesis that both Books have more in common than merely Nineveh as the subject matter, which they approach from a different angle. There seem to be grounds to see these two Books as vestiges of an intracanonical debate waged within the Book of the Twelve.

Abstract:
Today, when many other organizations and institutions would like to promote themselves as “family,” Scripture tells us that in many significant ways, the church is to live its life out like a family. Joseph Hellerman has written two books in this area that Stephen J. Kemp reflects on in this extended book review essay. We hope it will be of help to you in thinking through ways to both better integrate family ministry in the life of the church, and help our churches live out the family relationship God has called us to. - Editor

Abstract:
This study investigates two different ways of representing translation histories, namely, self-representation and other- representation. Moreover, this paper sheds some light on a part of the translation history during the Islamic golden age, specifically, the Abbasid Era. The current study analyzes two different books about the translation history during the Abbasid Era: O’Leary’s book (How Greek Science Passed to the Arabs, 1949) and Al-Khalili’s book (The House of Wisdom: How Arabic Science saved Ancient Knowledge and Gave Us the Renaissance, 2011). The purpose of the analysis is to gain a hint about how people write the history of translation and what factors, either cultural or ideological, interfered in shaping that history. Moreover, considering Al-Khalili’s book as an example of self-representation and O’Leary’s book as an example of other-representation should help in revealing types of convergences and divergences between these two books in representing translation history. The results of the analysis show that there were instances of convergences and divergences between these two books in representing translation history.

Dulaney, Susan Katherine. "Clarice Lispector's an Apprenticeship, or the Book of Delights: The Role of Silence in the Cultivation of Intimacy"." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2008. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_theses/34.

Abstract:
This thesis undertakes to explore silence as it functions in relation to intimacy in Clarice Lispector’s last narrative. It asks how silence, when perceived as a generative force, may cultivate intimacy between men and women, opening up a horizon of equality and exchange between the sexes. Using Lispector’s work as a symbolic location for asking larger questions about the role of Eros in contemporary literature, the first chapter is dedicated to introducing her work as it relates to the critical canon. After examining silence and intimacy as each have been conceptualized by thinkers from various philosophical traditions, I incorporate the recent work of Luce Irigaray, which has integrated Western discourse and Eastern mystical concepts of the intimate to articulate a new kind of male/female reciprocity. I apply Irigarayan theory to Lispector’s text as a way of enriching the academic scholarship regarding Lispector.

Lindstrom, David James. "Two Ways of Burning a Cotton Field." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3671.

Full text
Abstract:
TWO WAYS OF BURNING A COTTON FIELD is an ethnographic memoir concerning the narrator’s experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay, South America. The plot is structured around a moral crisis in his rural Paraguayan village. The narrator’s neighbor, a man in his late twenties, threatened to kill his partner and her two children. The Paraguayan police were made aware of the situation but did nothing. Peace Corps management also instructed the narrator to do nothing. In TWO WAYS OF BURNING A COTTON FIELD, this moral crisis is explored within the contexts of post-colonial power structures, including economic and ecologic geographies, intersections of community and government, and the colonial-indigenous language continuum of Paraguay (Spanish-Guaraní). Further, these neighbors’ localized trauma is located within historical, colonial trauma. Of particular concern is the role that languages – English, Spanish, and Guaraní – play in constructing power, worldview, and relationships within the village.

Ogunnaike, Oludamini. "Sufism and Ifa: Ways of Knowing in Two West African Intellectual Traditions." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:23845406.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines and compares the epistemologies of two of the most popular West African intellectual traditions: Tijani Sufism and Ifa. Employing theories native to the traditions themselves and contemporary oral and textual sources, I examine how these traditions answer the questions: What is knowledge? How is it acquired? And How is it verified? Or more simply, “What do you know?,” “How did you come to know it?,” and “How do you know that you know?” After analyzing each tradition separately, and on its own terms, I compare them to each other and to certain contemporary, Western theories. Despite having relatively limited historical contact, I conclude that the epistemologies of both traditions are based on forms of self-knowledge in which the knowing subject and known object are one. As a result, ritual practices that transform the knowing subject are key to cultivating these modes of knowledge. Therefore I argue that like the philosophical traditions of Greek antiquity, the intellectual or philosophical dimensions of Tijani Sufism and Ifa must be understood and should be studied as a part of a larger project of ritual self-transformation designed to cultivate an ideal mode of being, or way of life, which is also an ideal mode of knowing. I further assert that both traditions offer distinct and compelling perspectives on, and approaches to, metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, psychology, and ritual practice, which I suggest and begin to develop through comparison.<br>African and African American Studies

Abstract:
The current thesis is a contribution to create energy and resource efficient economy by means of chemical reactions. In particular, the thesis presents, on one hand, a quick and effective procedure for recovery of chromium (III) salts and isolation of high added value collagenic biopolymners from chromium(III) tanned solid wastes. The dechroming process is based on the oxidation of chromium(III) to chromium using hydrogen peroxide in alkaline medium. Additionally, the same oxidation reaction was used for recovery of chromium(III) salts from tannery effluents. On the other hand, thermochemical reactions (chemical adsorption processes and solid-gas chemicals reactions) open a new way for long-term solar heat storage in residential areas. The present work gives a review of the experimental research on thermal energy storage systems with thermochemical materials (TCM). Moreover, this work describes the experimental characterisation of MgSO4•7H2O, Al2(SO4)3•18H2O, CaCl2•2H2O and MgCl2•6H2O to determine is suitability for application in a seasonal solar heat storage system. Experimental results showed that the chlorides can deliver heat to the residential heating system at a higher temperature than the sulphates.

Abstract:
AbstractSince the 2000s, Lima city shows important changes in its socio-spatial structure, decreasing the long-established opposition between the centre and the periphery, developing a more complex arrangement. Sustained national economic growth has allowed better socio-economic conditions in different areas of the city. However, high inequality still remains in the ways of production of urban space, which affects residential segregation. To identify possible changes in the segregation patterns of Metropolitan Lima, this study focuses on the spatial patterns of occupational groups, examining their causes and relation with income inequality. The analysis is based on the 1993 and 2007 census data, measuring residential segregation by the Dissimilarity Index, comparing with the Diversity Index. The results confirm trends towards increased segregation between occupational groups. Top occupational groups are concentrated in central areas, expanding into adjacent districts. Bottom occupational groups are over-represented in distant neighbourhoods. In-between, a new, more mixed, transitional zone has emerged in upgraded formerly low-income neighbourhoods. Areas of lower occupational diversity coincide with extreme income values, forming spaces of greater segregation. In the metropolitan centre–periphery pattern, the centre has expanded, while the periphery has been shifted to outer peripheral rings.

Since there was no adequate textbook on the topic, he contacted Harvard University Press and offered to write a book on the subject. They accepted and the book came out in 1982. It was original in many ways, among them the personal testimonies of bilinguals and the many examples of bilingual speech. During this time, the author met with the bilingualism specialist, Einar Haugen. He and his wife, Eva, encouraged the author and helped him accept his own bilingualism. Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the main arguments of the book. The book defends pluralism about rightness and wrongness and about praise and blameworthiness. A central sort of blameworthiness, ordinary blameworthiness, is correlated with a sort of wrong action, subjectively wrong action. This account of ordinary blameworthiness focuses on a particular quality of will, and requires that the agent knows what she is doing, at least broadly. However, other sorts of wrong action may not be blameworthy at all (may be excused), or may be blameworthy only in a more detached way, where the focus is not on what the wrongdoer’s quality of will is, but on the point of view of the blamer. Finally, the book defends an extension of ordinary blameworthiness to cases where someone does something wrong inadvertently.

Abstract:
Andy Clark has been an agenda-setting figure since the dawn of his career, and, in book after book, he has laid out grand theories that invite his readers to see the human mind in new ways. With each book, Clark delivers a new and exciting vision of how the mind works. His fans can hardly keep up, and each is left wondering which of Clark’s theories to sign up for. Are they progressive stages in one grand narrative? A protracted plea for pluralism? Or a succession of new paradigms that displace their predecessors? Some noted philosophers have early, late, and even middle periods. With Clark, one might ask if each book is a metamorphosis. If so, how do we decide which Clark to follow? This chapter is about that question, and about the broader issue, which it begs: What is a theory of mind?

Full text
Abstract:
In the Slavic grammar books of the 16th-17th centuries, the category of dual was represented in the fi rst Slovenian grammar book «Arcticae horulae succisivae» (1584, Wit-tenberg) by the Protestant grammarian A. Bohorič (1520 –1588) and in the grammar book of the Church Slavonic lan-guage «Slavonic Grammar with Correct Syntax» (1619, Jevje) by M. Smotrytsky (1578–1633 (?)).It was assumed earlier that the Slovenian grammar had had a possible impact on Smotrytsky’s Grammar. However, the analysis of the dual forms in Bohorič’s G r a m m a r and Smotrytsky’s Grammar showed that such an impact was most likely impossible. When creating their gram-mar books, the authors were guided by different aims: if A. Bohorič was following the practice of using the forms of a living language, then Smotrytsky was orienting towards the fi xed stable forms of dead written language.

The methods in which e-books can be purchased vary greatly compared to print books. In the past, a print book was purchased either as an individual title (firm order) or through an approval plan. Once the books were received, there was little deviation in how the items were processed – purchase orders were created, books were processed, invoices were input and paid. However, with e-books, the work is more complex and there are a many ways to purchase e-books – firm order, Demand (or Patron) Driven Acquisiton (DDA), Evidence Based Acquisition (EBA), yearly front-file purchases, back-file purchases, or subscription to e-book packages. Each of the methods involves a workflow that goes from easy to somewhat complex. This begs the question of whether the acquisitions workflow can or should influence how e-books are purchased.

Abstract:
Interactive digital book was produced on the topics importance of statistics and presentation of information, for the statistical subjects taught at the Faculty of Higher Studies Cuautitlán, the book was made with an interactive approach, that is, in most chapters there are HTML5 objects that students can access by connecting to the Internet from any mobile device or PC. The themes of this interactive book were statistics, variables and measurement levels, pie graph, bar graph, histogram, dot graph, stem and leaf graph, line graph and form. The interactive digital book contemplates that each chapter indicates prerequisites, learning objectives, written development of the topic in the form of questions and answers, videos with explanation, interactive exercises, widget (html 5, interactive galleries, interactive images, etc.) review questions, internet activities and resources. The interactive digital book will offer students a full-screen experience with galleries, videos, interactive diagrams, mathematical expressions and more, these books bring content to life in ways that a printed page cannot. Students will no longer be limited to static images illustrating traditional texts, but can now immerse themselves in an image with interactive captions, bringing an answer to life in a chapter review. They can flip through a book by simply sliding a finger on the screen. They can also highlight text, take notes, search for content, and find definitions in a glossary very easily. Plus, they can take them wherever they go, allowing students to learn not only within the classroom walls, but also in the virtual space that these books make up.

Doğan Avcıoğlu, says in his famous book, Regime of Turkey that Turkey has oriental roots with attempts to cope to occidental cultures. Since westernization was always conceptualized as economic growtIn and development from the Ottoman times to young Turkish Republic western values and techniques were modified to our country. Although we accomplished in surface the oreintalist roots remained in the core of social structure of country. Thus Turkey attemted to organize capitalist western economic structure in eastern habits. In this study I aim to give some projections for coming decades under those arguments.

Abstract:
Abstract CAD systems that make suggestions to designers are investigated as an aid to preliminary design and computational tool for concurrent engineering. A system-user test was performed with such a system configured to provide suggestions in three ways: during preliminary design, after preliminary design, and not at all. Five users were tested with each mode. All were given the same design assignment, and all were allowed to refer to the standard book-form concurrent engineering information. The two user groups that received suggestions produced more good designs than did the unaided group. There was little distinction in quality, however, between the two aided groups. Additionally, users that received suggestions stopped using the book-form information very early in the design process and relied solely on the system’s assistance. These results demonstrate that suggestion-making systems can integrate concurrent engineering information into the preliminary design process.

Abstract:
In today’s world, it is critical to continually improve and develop new educational practices. Compared to developed and developing countries around the world, especially in science, mathematics, and engineering, the United States is falling behind. One of the most prominent reasons is the lack of interest in these subjects. In order to reverse this trend, it is important to develop new ways to creatively spark interest in engineering and natural sciences early on in a student’s educational career. The scope of this project was to develop a children’s book that introduced mechanical dissections. Along with the book, an in class presentation was developed for early elementary students in Kindergarten and 1st grade, with the goal of inspiring interest in engineering as a whole. This presentation was then used in local elementary school classrooms to gauge how such a program would fare in a typical elementary level classroom. Overall the project produced successful results. Not only were the students intrigued and excited to see the presentation, but they also learned more of the information than was originally expected. Through different media, the students were able to explore and question how and why a household appliance worked. This interaction with engineering concepts at a young age could prove to be very beneficial in the future.

Abstract:
This study examined the ethical behaviour of undergraduate students in relation to cyber technology at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), South Africa, and the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria. We adopted the pragmatic research paradigm that combines both quantitative and qualitative research methods through the survey method. The sample for the study was drawn from undergraduate students in two purposively selected universities in South Africa and Nigeria. Overall, 450 undergraduate students were invited to participate in the survey; 380 respondents completed and returned the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 84.4%. 14 of the expected 16 members of staff of both Information &amp; Communication Technology Resource Centre ICTREC and Information Technology Section ITS were interviewed, resulting in a response rate of 88%. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used for data analysis. Most of the respondents from the sampled universities reported that they were aware of what constitutes unethical cyber behaviour. Further, the participants (98; 52.1%) revealed that they had never received ethical orientation/training in the university on cyber behaviour, cyber space, or cyber technology. Challenges facing the students is reported. The study recommends that universities should sustain orientation/training programmes on cyber ethics and cyber security awareness at the start of each academic year, especially for newly enrolled students so that they can act responsibly when using the university’s cyberspace. The results of this study may spark further discussions and research on cyber technology access and use in contemporary society.

Panchenko, Svetlana. "Mental Map of Yekaterinburg in the Book 'The Drawn City' By A. Ryzhkov: Linguistic Analysis." In The Public/Private in Modern Civilization, the 22nd Russian Scientific-Practical Conference (with international participation) (Yekaterinburg, April 16-17, 2020). Abstract:
The article contains a linguistic analysis of the book ‘The Drawn City’ by A. Ryzhkov; the book comprises reproductions of pictures and respective text in the context of a mental map of the city of Yekaterinburg. In approaching the mental map as spatial information in people’s minds, reflecting the image of the city, the goals of linguistic analysis are to show the vision of the metropolis and the linguistic ways of verbally expressing the thoughts and feelings of the landscape artist; to determine the value to society of the private perception of the city through artistic representation and textual expression. Stylistic analysis of the text reveals the dominant features regarding the lexical, morphological and syntactic levels, while the pragmatics of the text consider its social relevance. Peculiar traits of the author’s style of the artist and the writer, as perceived by readers, have been listed; important points of the mental map of the city have been defined accounting for the book’s content: architecture, dominant idea, eclectics. The perception of time in synchronicity and diachronicity in the narrative regarding Yekaterinburg is considered, the motif of transition from reality to imagery is shown. Examples are given of positive, negative and contradictory evaluations of architectural objects, verbally influencing readers through the creation of visual images. There are linguistic tricks listed which were used in the book by A. Ryzhkov uses language techniques that hold the attention of the recipient of the text: comparison, personification, the use of colloquial language, humour and wordplay, and dialogisation. Methods of the creation of an imagery-geographic map of urban space have been shown in the author’s iconic-symbolic form. A conclusion was made on the significance of the book of A. Ryzhkov having used a visual-verbal method for the creation of a sustainable and replicable image of the city in the human mind. The artist’s civic stance on city protection has been set forth.
