Abstract:
AbstractIn a government-funded research project into the implications of digitization for book publishing in Australia, the researchers tested for the presence of global issues and trends. With a focus specifically upon book publishing to the exclusion of newspaper and journal publishing these included: revenue trends; competition; outsourcing; potential benefits of digital publishing; critical success factors for digital publishing; supply chain issues; value chain issues, business models and expectations for the future. An online survey and follow-up interviews found that technologies such the Internet and the World Wide Web, along with those for production and rights management were playing a significant role in book publishing. However, the major focus among book publishers was on business and organizational issues. There was widespread realization of the need to respond to competition from inside and outside the industry, including competition for the leisure time of users, with direct implications for value chains and business models. Key organizational changes identified included changes in structures and strategies, in human resource practices, and in cultures. The main benefits anticipated from digital technologies were in the areas of new niche markets, repackaging and repurposing of existing content, consumer-generated content and the enhancement of value chains. It is therefore, imprudent to only consider the impact of emerging technology as the fundamental in the ongoing development of digitization in book publishing, as other considerations such as demographics, social and economic factors are also essential ingredients.

Abstract:
Purpose From the point of view of the book chain, self-publishing is becoming increasingly common and it is doing so faster in the commercial world than in science. This study aims to analyse the phenomenon of self-publishing from the point of view of the research being done on it. Thus, in addition to studying the subject, it is going to be possible to analyse the viability of this methodology as an analysis technique. Design/methodology/approach The methodology is based on a combination of traditional bibliometric studies and analysis of social networks applied. Findings Self-publishing is a phenomenon that is being studied by the scientific community. But the research on this topic has a low rate of co-authorship and a low relationship between the most prolific authors and their relevance. The combination of techniques used has proven to be a very good choice for analyzing the data. Originality/value There are not enough works analyzing the research in self-publishing. Because of the peculiarities of the topic, a combination of various techniques will provide a better approach to its study, so, this paper contains some results using bibliometrics and others using social network analysis applied.

Abstract:
The 32nd Moscow International Book Fair (MIBF) was held on 4—8 September 2019. The purpose of this article is to rethink the role of the Russian State Library (RSL) in the MIBF event and communication space: on the one hand, as one of the subjects of bookwork and preserver of cultural values, and on the other hand — as the largest library publisher. The concept of the RSL stand as the exhibitor at the exhibition-fair was developed and built on the basis of this binary mode of the Library, with emphasis on those elements that reflect the chain of transition from the early printed book to the modern printed book, and from it — to the new digital formats. The RSL stand contained the dedicated areas of the “Pashkov Dom” Publishing house and the Scientific research Department of rare books (Book Museum), the Module of preservation and restoration of collections, the Advisory-expository legal module providing communications with publishers and authors on the issues of the National Electronic Library (NEL) and legal deposit copy of the printed publications in electronic form. The content program of stand work was correspondingly diverse and rich. It presented new products of the “Pashkov Dom” Publishing house, new projects prepared for publication independently and in cooperation with partners. The article considers the main theses of the authors, compilers and publishers, who made presentations at the RSL stand, as well as the topics of public lectures in open areas. The author reveals the new perspectives of NEL as one of the leading projects of the RSL, which combines different models of relationship between publishers, authors and libraries. The article highlights the results of the library competition of the Russian Library Association (RLA) “Best Professional Book of the Year”. The new format of participation of the RSL in exhibitions, fairs and similar events has been set. This format, in turn, forms a new event-image of the RSL, which positions the Library not only as an Institute of memory, which preserves the greatest cultural heritage — books, as a centre of intellectual development and professional interaction, but also as an active participant in the book publishing process.

Abstract:
Purpose – The aims of the present paper is electronic publishing has transformed the business model of publishing houses in Spain in such a way that two models currently coexist. The specificities of each of these models were studied and the consequences of each model for the future of electronic publishing in Spain were analysed. Design/methodology/approach – The first stage of this study consisted in locating studies that would allow the authors to obtain useful indicators and statistic data regarding publication in Spain. The second stage of this study consisted of extracting from the sources cited above all data relevant to the study. To wit, these were the number of electronic books published, the major publishing houses offering electronic publications, the major platforms currently selling electronic books, presently available electronic reading devices, the rates of reading on all devices, reading rates itemized by age and educational background and general tendencies in digital publishing and e-reading. Findings – There are traditional publishers of mostly paper-based volumes, whose business models are based on having large catalogues of titles and large print-runs, though print-runs are increasingly smaller and bookseller returns increasingly larger. Intermediary agents operating under this model, for instance booksellers, are subject to ever-greater economic pressures, especially in the current crisis Originality/value – In the study that follows, the authors attempt to analyse the characteristics behind these changes and learn to what extent these changes will affect the future models of publication and reading in Spain.

Abstract:
Due to the popularity of the Internet and portable readers, the digital publishing market was highly developing. A study from Displayban showed that digital publishing had a market value of 13 billion U.S. dollars and had increased 68 percent of production value compared to that in 2010 globally. Meanwhile, the production value of e-book readers had a market share of 80 percent to the whole digital publishing market. However, reading and manipulating a traditional printed book and an e-book were tremendously different. The design and layout of an e-book definitely affected the readability. Therefore, how to increase e-book readability was a topical concern in digital publishing industry. A content analysis and an in-depth interview methods were adopted in the study. The content analysis aimed to analyze the best-selling car e-magazine, Car News, regarding to its readability. The in-depth interview was to consult the chief editor of the publishing house to understand readability strategies and rules applied in its e-book products. Finally, after the reliability test of encoders passed, and the results from e-book content analysis and in-depth interview were comprehensively compared in every aspects of readability. The conclusions were that the traditional rigorous book layout design principles, such as indent, column, paragraph style, typography, etc. should be applied onto e-books to provide a better readability. Meanwhile, too many interactive or multimedia objects can reduce readability. Although, editors and experts from digital publishing industry were all agree with this, but most of current e-books indeed had too many interactive or multimedia objects. Nevertheless, multimedia and interaction objects were the most important features of e-books in spite of less readability. In short, based on the study and trade off the readability of e-books, publishing companies should not import multimedia and interactive objects deliberately. On the contrary, based on the book content, multimedia or interactive objects could be applied with a proper consideration to achieve their characteristics and strengths. By doing this, subjects of e-book could be emphasized and readability can be remained as well.

Gaigher, S. S. E. (Susan). "Digital publishing in the South African trade sub-sector : lessons to learn from disruptive technology." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/32784.

Full text
Abstract:
The traditional print publishing industry has been faced with significant change over the past decade. Advances in technology have led to the increased digitisation of business processes, and have debatably brought e-books to the brink of the mainstream market. With the growing popularity of e-books in the trade market come several opportunities for publishers to expand, improve and differentiate their businesses. But publishers also face a very challenging time ahead to successfully implement digital publishing in their business processes. This study examines the implications of digitisation and digital publishing on publishing business processes in the traditional print publishing environment. The research considers digital publishing as a disruptive technology in the publishing industry, and draws on the context and predictive value of disruptive technology theory. Disruptive technology theory examines why, when faced with a disruptive technology, some firms succeed in the marketplace, and others fail. The research applied the principles and predictions of disruptive technology theory to the publishing industry to develop a set of recommendations for publishers implementing digital publishing processes. The research employed a mixed methodology design that included an extensive literature review and an online survey of South African book publishers. The literature provided an overview of the issues surrounding digital publishing, and the opportunities and challenges that publishers are faced with. Literature on disruptive technology theory served to establish trends in industries faced with disruptive technology, and uncovered recommendations for its successful implementation. The researcher made use of an online survey that was sent to South African trade publishers that had already started experimenting with digital publishing in 2010 or 2011, or had plans to do so during the course of 2011 and 2012. The survey was designed to uncover the current state of digital publishing in the South African trade publishing industry, to discover the approaches that publishers are currently taking, and the barriers to implementation that they are experiencing. The research confirmed that the current state of digital publishing in South Africa, and the problems that publishers are experiencing, are characteristic of industries faced with disruptive technology. The principles of disruptive technology can therefore be applied to develop recommendations and suggest strategies for publishers planning to venture into digital publishing. Although the focus of the research was on South African trade publishers, the results and recommendations that emerged from the research can be applied to the wider international publishing industry.

Abstract:
The thesis reports research on digital publishing of peer-reviewed, scholarly journals. The aim was: (1) to first describe the activities undertaken by the stakeholders involved in scholarly Journal publishing, a process that is largely uncharted; (2) then to relate those activities to the structure of the scholarly journal publishing chain with reference to various economic or business models that have been tested or proposed; (3) and finally to explain in strategic terms some of the developments observed. Between four and six subjects were interview from each of the following groups of stakeholders in the scholarly journal information chain: authors, editors/referees (one group), publishers and librarians.

Abstract:
Since the 1990s, urban cultural policy in the UK has been bound to the cause of urban regeneration. Much has been written in examination and critique of this relationship, but what happens when the direction of strategic attention is reversed and civic leadership seeks to regenerate culture itself? The city of Glasgow, having made capital of culture over many decades, has moved towards a strategy for the development of literary Glasgow. This thesis documents a search for those factors crucial to that strategy. The research focuses on literary Glasgow as one aspect of the city’s cultural sector; identifies and examines gaps in the relationship between the civic cultural organisation and literary communities; and highlights those elements vital to the formation of a strategy for development of the literary in Glasgow. An extended period of participatory ethnographic research within the Aye Write! book festival and Sunny Govan Community Radio, is supplemented with data from interviews conducted across the literary sector and analysis of organisational documentation. Through these a gap has been identified between the policies and operations of a civic cultural organisation, and the desires of those engaged within the literary community. This gap is caused, in part, by the lack of a mechanism with which to reconcile contrasting narratives about the cultural essence of the city, or to negotiate the variations in definitions of value in relation to cultural engagement. The interdisciplinary approach builds upon insights from existing work within publishing studies, cultural policy, complexity theory and organisational studies to construct an understanding of the dynamics of Glasgow’s literary sector. This reveals the need for a framework in support of a landscape of practice, a desire for the placement of boundary objects to facilitate engagement, and the significance of value in relation to participation in literary activity. This work informs a strategy for literary Glasgow and contributes to conversations on strategies for cultural development in other cities.

Abstract:
The book publishing industry is threatened by a shift in customer preferences and an increas-ing number of publishing options. This paper seeks to find an answer to the question of how artificial intelligence can support book publishing to protect itself against these current and future threats. The focus lies on the identification and evaluation of concrete applications of artificial intelligence. Porter’s value chain analysis was applied to the book publishing indus-try and basic concepts of artificial intelligence were analyzed and introduced. Based on these explanations 9 promising applications could be identified: content analysis, automatic lan-guage generation, automated proofreading, automated book design creation, personalized ad-vertising, propensity modeling, automated metadata creation, demand forecasting, and con-versational commerce. This work contributes to an overall understanding of the opportunities artificial intelligence offers the book publishing industry and identifies concrete applications book publishers should focus on.

Odendaal, Estelle Rhode. "An exploration of the state of self-publishing in the academic publishing sector of South Africa." Diss., 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29085.

Full text
Abstract:
The academic publishing sector in South Africa is facing many changes and challenges in a post- 1994 democracy. Most of these changes were brought about by the Higher Education Act No 101 of 1997. Challenges and new trends include new business and threats from multinational corporations; a limited buying market at higher education level; a need for localised content; new emerging technologies in publishing and knowledge distribution; the merging of 36 higher education institutions into 22; escalating book production costs and book prices; a non-book buying and book reading culture; illegal photocopying and widespread copyright infringement; changing student and lecturer profiles including the language of instruction; increasing pressure on academics to publish research; inefficient student loan schemes; decreasing library acquisition budgets and the transformation of the publishing industry itself in terms of BBBEE. Within the midst of all these challenges, publishers are faced with a new trend, that of selfpublishing of academic textbooks, which lecturers then prescribe to their own group of students. Self-publishing implies that authors undertake all processes related to publishing on their own, including the financial risk of publishing a book. There is a multitude of literature available on self-publishing, but very little focuses on this trend within the academic environment. A literature survey of self-publishing provided various reasons and conditions for the existence of the phenomenon. The researcher made use of two questionnaires that were sent to academic campus bookshops and academic self-publishing authors. From the results of these two surveys it is evident that academic self-publishing is an increasing trend in the higher education environment of South Africa. Reasons for self-publishing collected from the literature survey were supported by the empirical research findings from the two surveys. The main reasons for self-publishing in the academic environment include financial incentives; a volatile author-publisher relationship; issues of copyright and control; possible rejection suffered by authors; technological advances and a sense of community service among academics and lecturing staff. The study was able to prove the existence of academic self-publishing in the higher education environment of South Africa. Academic self-publishing is most apparent in the academic fields of Business, Economics and Management Sciences to the extent that it could have far-reaching financial impact on markets that are traditionally lucrative for commercial publishers. Commercial publishers are encouraged to engage with author associations and seek out possible new alternatives to satisfying author needs in a changing market place.

Asia will take an important role in world economic in recent years, and obviously Chinese will make more devotion for this progress after the entering of the WTO. In this properous market, the use of Chinese will make the more influence on it. Recently the Chinese publishing exists in China mainland, Taiwan and Hongkong.Years of cross-trait communication in publishing fluently, inevitabily, the following obstacles slow down the effect of the communication: 􀁺 Mainland use the simplified Chinsese, it is different with the traditional Chinese which used in Taiwan and Hongkong 􀁺 Logistics block 􀁺 Prominent price difference 􀁺 High cost caused by the reverse logistics In this research, we try to explore and answer the following questions: 􀁺 Compare the logistics in three areas: Mainland, Taiwan, Hongkong. The commonplace and difference 􀁺 What are the main factors that cause the reverse logistics in publishing of three areas? Is there any common solution for these questions? 􀁺 From these solutions, could we find appropriate way or available step to be the most priority? We follow principals to find the answer: 􀁺 Data collections: two processes, the first is to select the sample case, that theplayers in publishing areas. The second step is to collect the data concerned the reverse logistics, after we take the EIQ analysis to compare the characteristics of the issue. 􀁺 Case study: the result of EIQ can figure 30 factors that cause the reverse logistics, using the Delphi methodology to classify these factors. 􀁺 Finally we use AHP methodology to explore and take insight to the four most impetus and important factors, to which we give our findings and solutions. For these factors, experts conclude some solutions to solve the them, use again the AHP to select the best one depending on the Timing, Cost, Importance and Availability.

The book publishing industry basically engages in presenting ‘writing’ and ‘graphics’ on ‘paper’ to the readers. Unlike manufacturing or other industries, the book publishing industry has its own unique operation. Studying book-publishing industries in different geographical areas or countries, one can also find slightly different business models under the influence of historical development in each area or country. This study focuses on the real changes happening to the supply chain of Taiwan’s book publishing industry under the dual pressure of severe competition and digital (internet) trend. The study starts with an analysis on the structure of Taiwan’s book publishing industry, followed by a discussion on the crises and challenges the industry is currently facing, i.e. issues such as competition among supply chains, fistfights or struggles among publishing companies, competition and cooperation among distribution channels, and highly influential money flow games. Then a comparison is made on the supply chains of book-publishing industries in five advanced countries, i.e. U.S., U.K., Germany, France and Japan based on the extensive data and experience the author accumulated in the past 20 years. Lastly, the study makes an in-depth analysis on the supply chains of the book-publishing industries in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in order to identify a profitable business model for the book publishing industry. The goal of studying the publishing strengths of other countries is to seek and identify winning strategies that can be applied to Taiwan’s publishing industry. This study discovers that the 7R’s of Logistics of the supply chain management theory can help the publishing industry to identify ways of innovation in a prudent and scientific method. With regard to cross-strait cooperation, Taiwan’s publishing industry should capitalize on its strengths such as talents developed over the years, professional expertise and market sensitivity in working with China’s publishers to create more opportunities. Doing so will also expand room for development for Taiwan’s publishers. This research would suggest that Taiwan’s publishers strive to lobby Taiwan government to adopt a protection policy for publishing as France and Germany did. In addition, Taiwan’s publishers should try to adopt flexible copyrights trade strategies and the business model of on-line bookstores, which are currently prevalent in the U.K. and the U.S. The creativity in book editing found in Japan is something Taiwan’s publishers should pattern after. After doing all these, the publishing industry in Taiwan can then have a quantum leap to create a remarkable productivity.

The electronic display market seems to be marching into another peak following Amazon’s release of Kindle e-book reader, which has received many favorable views, in 2007. Owing to the booming of e-book reader, the electronic paper (e-paper) application market has grown rapidly since 2008 and together with light, thin, low-energy consumption, flexible and other features, the e-paper currently is recognized as a cirtical alternative to physical paper and requires a lot of contents to support the flat panel display market in the future. Display Search research estimates that the number of e-paper display modules will grow from 20 million in 2009 to 800 million in 2015. Furthermore, the value of e-paper display modules will grow from US$400 million in 2009 to US$6 billion in 2015 and close to US$10 billion in 2018. Although e-paper has many amazing features and has been currently used in e-book readers, labels, public billboards, smart cards, mobile phone screens, the display of clothes, etc. However, the current technology development of e-paper such as full color, flexible type, refresh rate, cost and technical aspects of production has reached its bottleneck; therefore, there is a long way to go before e-paper can to a great extent replace the traditional paper products and display its full potential. Looking at the current trend of text digitalization, analyzing the key success factors of the e-paper industries is a very valuable research topics. This research found that the key success factors of e-paper industry are the technological breakthroughs required and the effective creation of markets.

Abstract:
It is a well-known fact that organized crime has developed into an international network that, spanning from the simple ‘grave diggers’ up to powerful and wealthy white-collar professionals, makes use of money laundering, fraud and forgery. This criminal chain, ultimately, damages and dissipates our cultural identity and, in some cases, even fosters terrorism or civil unrest through the illicit trafficking of cultural property. The forms of ‘possession’ of Cultural Heritage are often blurred; depending on the national legislation of reference, the ownership and trade of historical and artistic assets of value may be legitimate or not. Criminals have always exploited these ambiguities and managed to place on the Art and Antiquities market items resulting from destruction or looting of museums, monuments and archaeological areas. Thus, over the years, even the most renowned museum institutions have - more or less consciously - hosted in their showcases cultural objects of illicit origin. Looting, thefts, illicit trade, and clandestine exports are phenomena that affect especially those countries rich in historical and artistic assets. That includes Italy, which has seen its cultural heritage plundered over the centuries ending up in public and private collections worldwide. This edited volume features ten papers authored by international experts and professionals actively involved in Cultural Heritage protection. Drawing from the experience of the Conference Stolen Heritage (Venice, December 2019), held in the framework of the NETCHER project, the book focuses on illicit trafficking in Cultural Property under a multidisciplinary perspective. The articles look at this serious issue and at connected crimes delving into a variety of fields. The essays especially expand on European legislation regulating import, export, trade and restitution of cultural objects; conflict antiquities and cultural heritage at risk in the Near and Middle East; looting activities and illicit excavations in Italy; the use of technologies to counter looting practices. The volume closes with two papers specifically dedicated to the thorny ethical issues arising from the publication of unprovenanced archaeological objects, and the relevance of accurate communication and openness about such topics.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter analyses the impact of the music industry in Europe. Although the direct and indirect impact of this industry in the European economy is significant, the sector is made up of different activities and companies, which compete and encounter diverse challenges in it. The current situation of these companies and organisations is presented through an analysis of the business models of several enterprises engaging in a variety of activities throughout the industry’s value chain, such as music production, publishing, distribution and exhibition. Moreover, we analyse digital transformation and the growth in rivalry detected in these activities.

Abstract:
AbstractFinancial markets today are highly computerized -- from software-driven order submission to price determination to straight-through clearing and settlement -- computer technology has displaced manual activities and streamlined functions throughout the trading value chain. The previous chapters examined microeconomic principles that underpin trading and price-setting, and finance theory that provides analytical frameworks for market outcomes. Our analysis introduces real market frictions and examines how transactions costs and heterogeneity among market participants makes market structure and tracing mechanism design crucial determinants of market outcomes and behavior. . In this chapter, we drill down further into the realities of a non-frictionless market in order to focus on how technology can enhance the efficiency of an actual marketplace. Challenging market design issues are encountered when developing and operating an actual trading facility, and as IT professionals know, the devil is in the details. The practical considerations in operating a market system successfully are the next topic this book addresses.

Abstract:
AbstractAs the world’s population grows, the demands for increased food production expand, and as the stresses on resources such as land, water and nutrients become ever greater, there is an urgent need to find alternative, sustainable and reliable methods to provide this food. The current strategies for supplying more produce are neither ecologically sound nor address the issues of the circular economy of reducing waste whilst meeting the WHO’s Millennium Development Goals of eradicating hunger and poverty by 2015. Aquaponics, a technology that integrates aquaculture and hydroponics, provides part of the solution. Although aquaponics has developed considerably over recent decades, there are a number of key issues that still need to be fully addressed, including the development of energy-efficient systems with optimized nutrient recycling and suitable pathogen controls. There is also a key issue of achieving profitability, which includes effective value chains and efficient supply chain management. Legislation, licensing and policy are also keys to the success of future aquaponics, as are the issues of education and research, which are discussed across this book.

Abstract:
Publishing is the process of developing and producing content for distribution to the public. In the past, the publishing process heavily relies on printing as the method of content production. This causes voracious consumption and waste of natural resources. In today’s sweeping trend of digitization that is featured by the increasing popularity of various smart devices, the publishing process is undergoing a profound transition from the traditional printing-reliant publishing model to the new digital publishing model. Such a transition brings great opportunities for the publishing process to achieve better sustainability by evolving towards a product service system. This paper intends to advance the publishing process from the product service integration perspective. Above all, a general product-service integration framework is developed to describe the interdependent relationships among key stakeholders and elements in the publishing value chain. Furthermore, several specific publishing PSS are discussed. Finally, these publishing PSS are evaluated and compared from the value creation perspective.
