Abstract:
The sequential reading of the macrostructure of the Psalter pioneered by Gerald Wilson produced a seachange in Psalms scholarship, however, his non-messianic reading of the Psalter continues to evoke controversy and attract criticism. In this article I attempt to answer Wilson’s critics who find fault with his reading of the Psalter on the basis of the presence of Psalms 110 and 132 in Book v, psalms that are usually classified as ‘royal’ and seen as promoting a strongly messianic hope. After a review of Wilson’s arguments, I analyse the immediate context, the key words and the theocratic focus of Psalms 110 and 132. These features provide support for Wilson’s thesis that ‘David’ in Book v is no messianic cipher, but an exemplary model of loyal devotion to God’s kingship. This viewpoint in no way undermines a Christian reading of the Psalter, with the Book of Psalms read as pointing forward to the God-man, Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate model of human devotion to God, the apocalyptic Son of Man, and the Divine King come to save his people.

Abstract:
The fifth book of the Psalter shows a notable increase in the attention given to the poor. Several psalms therein emphasize this topic and occupy specific positions, e.g., Pss 107, 109, 146, and 147. Dominant themes are hunger, justice, and the constant and all-embracing support that God gives, and which leads, towards the end of the Psalter, to a number of psalms dedicated to praise of God.

Abstract:
[Rev. of: Verner I. V. The Interlinear Slavonic-Greek Psalter of 1552 Translated by Maximus the Greek. Moscow: Indrik, 2019, 928 pp. (in Russian)] The article offers a review of the study and publication of Maximus the Greek's 1552 translation of the Psalter. This translation, which has remained in manuscripts until now, is viewed as part of the European biblical revision, ialongside other well-known Renaissance translations and editions of the Holy Scriptures. The Church Slavonic-Greek Psalter of 1552 is a monument at once to Byzantine-Slavic, European-Slavic, and inter-Slavic cultural and linguistic ties of the early Modern period. The edition contains an exemplary linguistic and textological description of the Psalter of 1552 which clearly highlights the stages of Maximus the Greek's work on the text, reveals his methods using handwritten and printed sources in different languages, and explicates the translation technique of the Athos scholar. The book identifies the printed Greek original of the Psalter of 1552, which turns out to be the 1498 edition of Justin Decadius. The second part of the book contains a critical edition of the Psalter of 1552 based on the interlinear manuscript of the Russian State Library (RSL f. 173.I # 8) incorporating variant readings of six copies studied. The Greek part of the interlinear manuscript is presented in accordance with its specific Slavonic spelling. This book is a major contribution to paleoslavistics and to the research on biblical studies in Early Modern Russia.

Abstract:
Abstract Along with recent scholarship which is concerned with reading the book of Psalms as a whole, this article analyzes Psalm 102 within its canonical, literary context. It focuses on two main areas. First, the superscription. It identifies the speaker as the “afflicted,” who is a suffering royal Davidic figure associated with Psalms 88-89 and 101, 103. Second, the paper moves throughout the rest of the psalm, making observations concerning thematic and lexical relationships between the psalm and its immediate context. It concludes that Psalm 102, alongside 101, functions as a meditative response of the afflicted Davidic king to the questions posed in Psalm 89. As such, it provides an important literary hinge, without which the lamenting questions of Book III could not turn into affirmations of YHWH’s love and praise throughout Books IV-V.

Abstract:
In spite of the beauty of Psalm 139, it is notorious for its extreme exegetical divide. Research to date has put exceptional focus on Psalm 139 and its unity and/or division. This study, attempts to come to a clearer insight into Psalm 139. To accomplish this, a twofold approach is taken. First, we let the text speak for itself by exploring the textual and poetic features. These results will then be put in the wider context of the Psalter, specifically Book V of the Psalter. The placement of Psalm 139 within the context of the theology of Book V of the Psalter is seriously considered and attention is drawn to the relationship that Psalm 139 has with other texts in its immediate context.

Mitchell, David C. "The message of the Psalter : an eschatological programme in the Book of Psalms." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30521.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to demonstrate that the final form of the Psalter has been redacted so as to reflect an anticipated sequence of eschatological events. It therefore falls within the broad discipline of Canon criticism of the Psalter, and builds on the work of scholars such as Childs, Brennan, Wilson, McCann, and Sheppard. Chapter I reviews Psalms interpretation from the Septuagint to modern times, and concludes that with the exception of the period c. 1850-1980, most interpreters have regarded the Psalter as having (i) literary unity and (ii) an eschatological-predictive nature. Chapter II suggests there is internal evidence in the Psalter to support this view. However, contemporary scholarship on the canonical form of the Psalter emphasises either the general eschatological tendency of its arrangement (Childs, Brennan) or else seeks to discern a historical event-sequence in it (Wilson, Sheppard, Walton, Mays). No-one has yet proposed a fully eschatological explanation for the sequence of Psalms. In the remainder of the thesis we attempt to do this. Chapter III suggests the Psalms of Asaph (Pss 50, 73-83) can be read as depicting a sequence of latter-day events beginning with the ingathering of Israel from exile (Ps 50:5) and culminating in the ingathering of an alliance of hostile nations against Jerusalem (Ps 83). Chapter IV suggests the Songs of Ascents (Pss 120-134) can be read as depicting a latter-day pilgrimage to the Feast of Sukkoth in Jerusalem in a post-war messianic malkut. Chapter V examines eschatological programmes in Ezk 34-48, Zech 9-14, and Joel 3-4, and suggests they feature a sequence of gathering motifs: (i) Israel gather from exile; (ii) hostile nations gather against Israel, but are subdued; (iii) Israel and all the nations gather to worship at Sukkoth on Zion.

Abstract:
The present work attempts to enter into the ongoing discussion regarding the canonical arrangement of the Old Testament Psalter and its overall message. It does so by examining Book IV and its function within the whole of the psalms. By examining Psalms 90-106 in their literary context, the psalm book's overall theological and thematic message is discussed and the main suggestion of this thesis is that Psalms 90-106 have been purposely arranged as a rejoinder to the previous three books, in response to the rise and fall of Davidic kingship charted in Books I-III. Thus, as a result, this work seeks to outline Book IV's role in the message of the Psalter and, thereby, add to the ongoing conversation within psalms studies regarding the organisation of the Psalter.

Santrac, Dragoslava. "Sanctuary cult in relation to religious piety in the Book of Psalms / by Dragoslava Santrac." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9827.

Full text
Abstract:
The specific thesis that is tested in this study is that there is continual interaction between the sanctuary cult and personal religious experience in the Book of Psalms. The main theoretical argument is that the sanctuary cult had a formative role in creating the piety of the psalmists. The study attempts to explore the specific nature of that relationship and to benefit from the contributions of three major approaches to the Psalms, i.e., the form critical approach (Hermann Gunkel), the cultic approach (Sigmund Mowinckel) and the Psalter-shaping approach (Gerald H. Wilson, James L. Mays, Jerome F. D. Creach, Mark D. Futato, J. Clinton McCann and Walter Brueggemann). The study suggests that the ongoing interaction between the sanctuary cult and personal piety in the Psalms is the result of the creative power of cult. It offers evidence of the possible shaping of the Psalter around the sanctuary motif. It also offers a unique perspective on the piety of the psalmists, suggesting that the psalmists, and particularly the editor(s) of the present shape of the Psalter, promoted the eschatological hope of Israel in the new temple and the heavenly aspect of Israel’s sanctuary.

Abstract:
Cultural heritage represents a national treasure evolving from the culture and spirituality of people. Therefore, it must be continuously recovered, protected and developed by all generations as priceless heritage. Referring to the Romanian cultural heritage items that are placed in restoration, at present, some works have been done for partial or complete replacing of degraded materials, both as the result of ageing under atmospheric and biologic agents. The aim of this study is testing different samples of new leather and parchment under UV radiation in the 220-380nm domain, in order to simulate the accelerated destruction in photo-oxidative conditions. The following materials have been studied: book binding leather obtained from calf hide, tanned by different systems (vegetable or vegetable and chromium) and parchment obtained from different kinds of animals. The evolution of the chromatic characteristics (luminosity, shade and chroma) at different exposure time was quantified by the diffuse reflectance technique in visible domain range and CIE-Lab software. Based on the chromatic stability after UV exposure, the most stable types of leather and parchment have been selected for further applications in the restoration process of historical manuscripts and books' covers.

Abstract:
For more than 50 years, interest to the microwave heating technology has not weakened. In addition to the traditional areas of its application, which described in detail in [1], recently there has been an expansion of technological possibilities for the use of microwave energy associated with the impact of electromagnetic waves of the microwave range on various materials (sintering of metal and ceramic powders) and media, including plasma [2]. One such new direction is the creation of high-power and environmentally friendly sources of optical radiation on the basis of an electrodeless sulfur lamp with microwave excitation [2, 3]. The purpose of this paper is to the further development of the theory and practice of microwave excitation by the electrodeless sulfur lamps, improvement the energy efficiency during energy conversion into the optical radiation and widening the application of new light sources in real practice. The results of the computer modeling of conversion process of the microwave energy into optical radiation energy are presented. The simulation results are compared with experimental data. It is shown that additional use of the solar panels for the reverse conversion of the optical radiation into DC energy with follow-up its using in the circuits of secondary power supply allows improving the energy efficiency of the light source. Abstract:
