Botha, Carine. "Psalm 139 - a redactional perspective." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/64293.

Full text
Abstract:
In spite of the beauty of Psalm 139, it is notorious for its extreme exegetical divide. Research to date has put exceptional focus on Psalm 139 and its unity and/or division. This study, attempts to come to a clearer insight into Psalm 139. To accomplish this, a twofold approach is taken. First, we let the text speak for itself by exploring the textual and poetic features. These results will then be put in the wider context of the Psalter, specifically Book V of the Psalter. The placement of Psalm 139 within the context of the theology of Book V of the Psalter is seriously considered and attention is drawn to the relationship that Psalm 139 has with other texts in its immediate context.

Mitchell, David C. "The message of the Psalter : an eschatological programme in the Book of Psalms." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30521.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to demonstrate that the final form of the Psalter has been redacted so as to reflect an anticipated sequence of eschatological events. It therefore falls within the broad discipline of Canon criticism of the Psalter, and builds on the work of scholars such as Childs, Brennan, Wilson, McCann, and Sheppard. Chapter I reviews Psalms interpretation from the Septuagint to modern times, and concludes that with the exception of the period c. 1850-1980, most interpreters have regarded the Psalter as having (i) literary unity and (ii) an eschatological-predictive nature. Chapter II suggests there is internal evidence in the Psalter to support this view. However, contemporary scholarship on the canonical form of the Psalter emphasises either the general eschatological tendency of its arrangement (Childs, Brennan) or else seeks to discern a historical event-sequence in it (Wilson, Sheppard, Walton, Mays). No-one has yet proposed a fully eschatological explanation for the sequence of Psalms. In the remainder of the thesis we attempt to do this. Chapter III suggests the Psalms of Asaph (Pss 50, 73-83) can be read as depicting a sequence of latter-day events beginning with the ingathering of Israel from exile (Ps 50:5) and culminating in the ingathering of an alliance of hostile nations against Jerusalem (Ps 83). Chapter IV suggests the Songs of Ascents (Pss 120-134) can be read as depicting a latter-day pilgrimage to the Feast of Sukkoth in Jerusalem in a post-war messianic malkut. Chapter V examines eschatological programmes in Ezk 34-48, Zech 9-14, and Joel 3-4, and suggests they feature a sequence of gathering motifs: (i) Israel gather from exile; (ii) hostile nations gather against Israel, but are subdued; (iii) Israel and all the nations gather to worship at Sukkoth on Zion.

Abstract:
The present work attempts to enter into the ongoing discussion regarding the canonical arrangement of the Old Testament Psalter and its overall message. It does so by examining Book IV and its function within the whole of the psalms. By examining Psalms 90-106 in their literary context, the psalm book's overall theological and thematic message is discussed and the main suggestion of this thesis is that Psalms 90-106 have been purposely arranged as a rejoinder to the previous three books, in response to the rise and fall of Davidic kingship charted in Books I-III. Thus, as a result, this work seeks to outline Book IV's role in the message of the Psalter and, thereby, add to the ongoing conversation within psalms studies regarding the organisation of the Psalter.

Santrac, Dragoslava. "Sanctuary cult in relation to religious piety in the Book of Psalms / by Dragoslava Santrac." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9827.

Full text
Abstract:
The specific thesis that is tested in this study is that there is continual interaction between the sanctuary cult and personal religious experience in the Book of Psalms. The main theoretical argument is that the sanctuary cult had a formative role in creating the piety of the psalmists. The study attempts to explore the specific nature of that relationship and to benefit from the contributions of three major approaches to the Psalms, i.e., the form critical approach (Hermann Gunkel), the cultic approach (Sigmund Mowinckel) and the Psalter-shaping approach (Gerald H. Wilson, James L. Mays, Jerome F. D. Creach, Mark D. Futato, J. Clinton McCann and Walter Brueggemann). The study suggests that the ongoing interaction between the sanctuary cult and personal piety in the Psalms is the result of the creative power of cult. It offers evidence of the possible shaping of the Psalter around the sanctuary motif. It also offers a unique perspective on the piety of the psalmists, suggesting that the psalmists, and particularly the editor(s) of the present shape of the Psalter, promoted the eschatological hope of Israel in the new temple and the heavenly aspect of Israel’s sanctuary.

MCLEAN, GEORGE EDWARD. "SPENSER'S TERRITORIAL HISTORY: BOOK V OF THE "FAERIE QUEENE" AND "A VIEW OF THE PRESENT STATE OF IRELAND"." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183825.

Full text
Abstract:
History in Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene Book V and his View of the Present State of Ireland reflects the basic assumptions and characteristics of Elizabethan territorial history, a form observed in the geographic basis of chorography, in the metaphoric expression of the British past, and in the contemporary English enthusiasm for state, county, and city histories. William Lambarde's A Perambulation of Kent, the earliest English model for Spenser's territorial history, employs the antiquary's tentative empirical methodology in a study of sources newly freed of myth, legend, and unreliable antiquity. Accepting the developmental historical perspective of the territorial historians, Spenser in his View discusses the susceptibility of certain positive laws to the ravages of time and circumstance and argues for a reformation of those laws and their administration in Ireland. Similarly, justice in book V is a virtue of reformation that requires a "physician" who diagnoses, cures, and prescribes a diet of new, well-ordered laws for the patient-state, the primary danger to "recural" existing in laws abrogated or perverted since their inception. While accepting the workings of divine and natural law in history, Spenser focuses on the justiciar's secular role in terms of political more than providential causation, legal more than moral justice, and practical more than theoretical law. As England's first justiciar Artegall presents a righteous response to original tyranny in a prelegal society and acquits himself on the charges of "unmanly guile" and "reproachful cruelty" by representing human justice based on laws responsive to season. In the historical domains of Book V Arthur's presence exemplifies providence in human justice, Artegall's actions man's secular control over responsive lawmaking and territorial rebellion, and Radigund's tale the imposition of natural law on justice. The legal and topical content of Book V's poetic journeys suggest the territorial historian's "perambulation" in which Spenser's heroes learn the history of each canto's territory before a reforming justice can operate. As feigned antique history merges with topical event, the Legend of Justice becomes an innovative, optimistic, and uniquely Elizabethan glimpse of new territory.

Nienaber, J. E. "Distopie in die grafiese roman : V for Vendetta as voorbeeld." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/21688.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the genre of dystopian fiction in the graphic novel, V for Vendetta in which a futuristic police state, run by a totalitarian regime is portrayed. Since V for Vendetta draws on a number of other dystopian texts, New Historicist theory is employed which begins its analysis of literary texts by attempting to look at other texts as well as the historical context in which it originated, to aid in the understanding of that text. Therefore, V for Vendetta with its thorough character development and multi-dimensional storyline that the larger format of the graphic novel allows, is studied alongside other highly regarded novels. The characteristics of the nightmarish anti-utopia is identified and analysed in V for Vendetta by looking at real examples of totalitarian regimes from history. The chapters are divided into what I identified as the main themes of the totalitarian dystopia. Chapter one explains the concept of the utopia in order to grasp the concept of dystopia, and more specifically, the Totalitarian dystopia. Chapter two looks at the social structure of V for Vendetta as well as the common Totalitarian dystopia. Chapter three discusses the issue of censorship which is a recurring theme in dystopian fiction. Chapter four examines the manner in which the totalitarian regime manipulates the populace of the dystopia through propaganda. Chapter five discusses the systems of surveillance and lack of privacy in the Totalitarian dystopia and a chapter on the protagonist in dystopia concludes this study.

Abstract:
A search for self through historical reconstruction constitutes a crucial concern of the American postmodern historical novels of Pynchon, Barth, Mailer, Coover, and Doctorow. This concern consists of a self-conscious dramatization, paralleled by contemporary theorists' arguments, of the constructedness of history and individual subject. A historian-character's process of historical inquiry and narrative-making foregrounded in these novels represents the efforts by the postmodern self to (re)construct identity (or identities) in a constructing context of discourse and ideology.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the paintings of one of the most important manuscripts of the Persianate book tradition: a copy of the Bustân of Sa‘di, executed in the Timurid court of Herât, ca. 894 H./1488. It argues that these paintings embody a shift in the understanding of painting from a device of representation to an object of performance. In the three chapters of the dissertation, I analyze several new characteristics that appear in the paintings of the Bustân. First, the painting becomes filled with elements that are not related to the text copied in the book (chapter I). Second, the monuments depicted are inscribed with poetic verses emphasizing the admiration of the viewer towards the paintings (chapter II). Lastly, the visual information becomes extremely miniaturized. The most meticulous details appear to be minute linear motifs. This emphasis on the line accords with the presence of the signature of the painter Behzâd, embedded in each composition (chapter III).All of these elements shift the attention of the viewer from the content represented in the paintings to the artistic process that led to their creation. By contrasting the paintings with the historical scenarios of their reception, this dissertation sheds light on a hitherto unnoticed aspect of late 9th/15th century Persian painting, one which foreshadows the development of art historiographical writings: the paintings signed “Behzâd” are conceived not only as representational devices, but also as objects of performance, that the painter uses to inscribe his gesture, and whose contemplation causes the viewer to elaborate discourses and fictions on the artist

Persaud, Aran Jeremy. "Praying the language of enmity in the Psalter : a study of Psalms 110, 119, 129, 137, 139 and 149 / Aran Jeremy Persaud." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15498.

Abstract:
Psalms using the language of enmity present a challenge for Christians who wish to use these psalms as prayer. This study investigates the language of enmity in Psalms 110, 119, 129, 137, 139 and 149 as Christian prayer and beyond the normal form category of lament or complaint of the individual. An argument is proposed to understand Book V of the Psalter as an integral unit, which editors have arranged to represent the post-exilic early restoration period. The study begins with an exegesis of each psalm and seeks to determine the perceived suffering of the psalmist(s) at the hands of enemies and the meaning of the responses to these adversaries. It then moves to a limited historical survey of how commentators through Church history have perceived the suffering and responses in these psalms which use language of enmity. This historical survey is used to correct or clarify the findings in the exegesis. In the third movement of this thesis, the results of the individual exegesis and historical survey of Psalms 110, 119, 129, 137, 139 and 149 are compared in order to elucidate the meaning of the language of enmity. The findings suggest that the language of enmity represents images of judgment on a recalcitrant adversary. The psalms are also investigated as prayers and as normative scripture. The use of the language of enmity in these psalms suggests a use of language that differs from normal use. In this regard the rhetorical device of synecdoche is most helpful in explaining how the texts function. The basis for the language of enmity seems to be the unchanging nature of moral evil. The study then investigates the psalms as canonical, normative prayer in order to move towards developing a theology of God’s just dealing with people and his people in particular. In this regard the psalms are approached as prayer, regardless of the voice in which they were composed. It is suggested that the text as normative prayer allows the psalmist, God, and the pray-er to inhabit and celebrate the same sacred time and space. Of particular concern is how each psalm speaks to the issue of how God engages with moral evil and the question of what can be known about moral evil. The findings suggest that these psalms are an invaluable spiritual resource for the church and should remain unaltered in their use as Christian private and public prayer.

Gundersen, David. "Davidic Hope in Book IV of the Psalter (Psalms 90-106)." Diss., 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/4991.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation argues that Book IV of the canonical Hebrew Psalter (Pss 90–106) sustains the hope that God will keep his covenant with David by installing a future king from David’s line. Chapter 1 introduces the debate, states the thesis, surveys the history of psalmic interpretation, and summarizes recent canonical views that see David either diminished or sustained in Book IV. Chapter 2 presents an eclectic canonical methodology that honors the five-book division, accounts for superscriptions, incipits, and closings, senses a broad narrative progression, acknowledges psalmic collections, recognizes lexical, thematic, and structural resonance beween psalms, and considers inner-biblical allusions. Chapter 3 explores the covenantal contradiction in Psalm 89 and proposes that Psalm 90 continues and complements the lament in Psalm 89 which questioned the character and reign of God due to the fallen Davidic throne and the severed Davidic line. Chapter 4 analyzes Psalms 90–92 and argues that a reimagined Moses enters Book IV to intercede for Israel (90) in response to the unfulfilled Davidic covenant in Psalm 89. Psalms 90–92 then allude to Deuteronomy 32–33 and progress from pained petition (90) to promised protection (91) to restored rejoicing (92). Chapter 5 explores the message and function of Psalm 101 and argues that its intra-book links, Davidic title, royal voice, lamenting tone, future orientation, inter-psalm allusions, and strategic placement make it a central psalm sustaining Davidic hope in Book IV. Chapter 6 explores the lexical and thematic resonance among Psalms 90, 102, and 103 and argues that the afflicted Davidide in Psalm 102 applies and echoes the plaintive prayer of Moses in Psalm 90 and that the Davidic praise in Psalm 103 answers both Psalms 90 and 102. Thus David is forgiven and restored along with the people in Psalm 103. Chapter 7 concludes by reviewing the evidence from each chapter and proposing that the overall structure and message of Book IV sustains the hope that God will keep his covenant with David.

La, Porte Melissa. "A Tale of Two Mappae Mundi: The Map Psalter and its Mixed-Media Maps." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/3662.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates small-scale mappae mundi, world maps, created in the thirteenth-century, which record the historical, mythical, social, and religious reality of the world for wealthy English patrons. My research focuses on two maps found in a Psalm book (British Library Add. MS 28681, f. 9 and f. 9v) on either side of a single page. One depicts the world in typical mappae mundi fashion, with Jerusalem at the centre of a network of cities, topographic features and monstrous creatures while the other lists place names and geographic descriptions. The maps depict the world in very different manners, one textually and the other visually, but their placement on the same leaf emphasizes their connection. This work explores the iconography, socio-historic context and literary precedence of mappae mundi in order to comprehend the distinct need for mixed-media to represent and understand a complex worldly existence in thirteenth-century England.

Abstract:
Petra Bolková will be examining in her thesis the evolution of photography used on book covers in the 1960s; the period marked with certain political and cultural liberation. This study will attempt describing systematically in what ways certain artists and writers collaborated and what the difficulties of these collaborations were. It will also be examined how the author of a book and the artist delegated to design the book cover; the initial advertisement for a book, were influencing each other. What is more, the extent to which the graphic art reflects the content of the written word will be studied. Book covers became a covert space for experimenting with or even establishing new trends in the 1960s. Books covers became a new, independent fine art discipline which, essentially, was censored or criticized only occasionally. The goal of this thesis will also be gradually finding the numerous common grounds between photography, book typography and the final design, as photography and photomontage were used on book covers more frequently then classic original illustrations. Last but not least, this thesis will be looking at what emphasis was put on the visual side and how it was conditioned culturally or politically ect.

Abstract:
The dissertation looks into the book culture, book production and readership in the kingdom of Bohemia in early humanism. It explores the conditions of rise and reception of book printing in the kingdom of Bohemia. The mind-set of the Utraquist society, resistant to the influence from abroad, international isolation of the Utraquist Bohemia and the previous insignificant manuscript production proved to be the factors which failed to encourage the arrival of book printing in the country. The initial advancement of book printing was hesitant and could not to keep up with the more developed trade abroad. The Czech printing production related to the efforts of reformation to further enhance the moral status of the society soon turned to disseminating literature in the vernacular, yet often they were translated literature. The early Czech printed production however was affected by low quality and quantity of prints and was not of the significance declared by the previous generations of researchers. Personalities of the Catholic society were more inclusive about new ideas from abroad. In the contemporary society the Catholics were therefore the first ones to embrace book printing and also they were quicker in reception of humanism. The early humanist literature in Bohemia is related to the personality of...

Abstract:
Whereas in Czech there are three verb moods, in French a fourth one is to be found, being defined as the "subjunctive mood". The subjunctive does not exist in Czech which often makes it hard to handle by students as well as teachers. The main aim of the thesis is to map the ways of presenting the French subjunctive verb mood in selected grammar handbooks intended for students and teachers of French and outline the different approaches to describing its parameters. Subsequently, the second objective here is to analyse the methods of presenting the subjunctive in selected textbooks and workbooks used when teaching French at Czech schools. The thesis is divided in three parts. In the initial one, the different approach to presenting the subjunctive in the referential grammar book of P. The diploma thesis deals mainly with the analysis of the work with NO/NOT (both stand- alone word and words containing a negative and containing graphic characters) in the athematics booksfor the first class of the eight-year grammar school (four mathematics textbooks, Prometheus Publishing House). The first chapter summarizes the investigation of the available literature which analyses the textbooks and negative in mathematics. Furthermore, there is a characteristic of the age group of pupils who are taught according to the textbook and the analysis of the Framework education program for basic education from the point of view of its work with the negatives and claims, which are requested from pupils. The main part is the analysis of a mathematical textbook focused on the frequency of the word NO/NOT or the words containing the negative. In the practical part, there is proposed a division of words containing the negative into five roles defined by me, and investigation which results show how far my work can serve teachers, respectively how this role definition can help. The practical part also mentions some surprising mathematical mistakes that pupils have done. Finally, there are mentioned recommendations for teachers on what to focus when working with the negative during teaching.

My thesis investigates contemporary illustrative art and tendencies occurring in the work of the youngest generation of the Czech illustrators. My objective is to bring an overview of the current forms, shapes, applications and overall state of the contemporary Czech illustration scene. The paper divides the illustration art into four categories, that are then more closely examined in individual chapters. My major focus is on the book illustration in all its current forms. This thesis contains regulatory principles that govern the standard of published illustrated materials through various recognised competitions and awards. I mention different associations and clubs that are currently active in the field of developing contemporary illustration. This occurs not only through grouping of illustrators but also through organising different events and festivals. In the didactic part this paper deals with the role of illustration in child development, specifically its natural artistic expression. This part also includes proposals of teaching materials and curriculum focused on illustration where I introduce my own designs. This paper deals with the phenomenon of the financial collateral arrangements, under which parties transfer book-entry securities. It focuses on the legal questions link to the international element. Financial collateral arrangements typically occur in securities repurchase and securities lending. These transactions play important role in order to guarantee liquidity cash and proper functioning of capital markets in the European Union. Simultaneously, securities are no longer only of a tangible goods nature; instead they exists as electronic records in securities accounts. This is why conflicts of law issues have become so paramount. This study analyses the approach of Czech law to financial collateral arrangements. In particular, if the collateral is represented by a book-entry share, bond or fund unit. It pays attention to such a matter from the national as well as the harmonised EU perspective. On an EU level, such arrangements are primarily regulated by the Collateral Directive (FCAD). The Hague Convection on the Law Applicable to Certain Rights in Respect of Securities held with Intermediaries, which has had a profound impact on the notion of book-entry securities conflicts of law rules, is specifically discussed too. Monastery library of Order of Hermits of Saint Augustin in Prague is an outstanding book collection of considerable scientific and historical value. Nowadays, it consists of more than 18 000 volumes. Saint Thomas monastery was founded by Wenceslaus II. in 1278 and had, from the very beginning,, a leading role among other monasteries of this order in Bohemia.
