Abstract:
Established in 1960, the Museum van het Boek is known for its holdings and exhibitions of Western book art from the last 110 years. Building on the starter collections of two donors, a private printer and a bibliophile, the Museum’s acquisitions now focus mainly on modern book art. More than 25,000 of the 450,000 objects in the Museum are books showing the development of standard Dutch publishing, the work of individual book illustrators, type designers and calligraphers, contemporary Dutch private presses and artists’ books. There is also considerable foreign material, notably from Germany and Great Britain.

Abstract:
This paper describes the usefulness of reliable book statistics for publishers, booksellers, educators, and policymakers and outlines the main reasons why there are few such statistics. In its second part, the paper proposes indicators that would measure the role of books and book industries both in contemporary societies and in recent history, and argues for a wider debate around book statistics and the role of books and reading in society.

Abstract:
The perception of a book as an architectonical construction is a well-known fact. We could use the stage as a metaphor for the book, or, in other concepts the book becomes the equivalent of an exhibition space or even replaces it. In all these metaphoric circumlocutions the book not only reproduces content, but itself functions as an exhibition place, a stage, or another conception of space. Curiously enough, the consideration of the material aspects of books are taken into account at a time when digitalisation seems to dissolve the material body of books and, while theory makes it clear that texts and books are not equivalent. Therefore the question of what characterises a book is raised again. This question must take into account the variety of different approaches to books throughout the centuries. The perception of the book and, moreover, its relation with the user or reader becomes visible mainly through material aspects. The awareness of the spatial dimension of a book goes back to at least the Medieval period or even earlier.

Abstract:
<p>The research intended to identify current trends in research on e-books. Specifically it aimed to know the facets of e-books attended to by the research published during 2016. It also intended to review significant results and their supportive or contradictory nature with reference to each other.</p><p>For this review research literature on e-books was searched from LISA, Emerald, Ebsco, Google Scholar and other databases using the statement ‘e-books OR ebooks’. The query was restricted to journal articles published in English language during January to December 2016. The review finds that the focus of current research on e-books is clearly on usage of e-books. Themes such as e-book collection development and management; search and discovery are also paid more attention to. Usage of e-books by children is emerging as a prominent area of e-book research. Designing of e-books and e-book reading devices are also topics of interest to e-book researchers. Many non-LIS disciplines and professions have interest in researching e-books. </p><p> </p>

Abstract:
This study was designed to enrich the learning experiences of in-service and pre-service teachers in two educational technology classes by adopting e-books as the course material. Graduate students were more positive about their e-book reading experience than undergraduate students, but, surprisingly, more undergraduates (63.6%) became interested in checking out e-book readers from the school library than graduate students (51.9%). Over three-quarters of undergraduates (78.6%) responded positively about the use of e-book readers by the end of the study. Despite their appreciation of e-book features, more than half of both undergraduate and graduate students preferred print books but were willing to use e-books and e-book readers for their readings. Shortcomings of e-books were eye-strain and the limitation of e-book collections.

Abstract:
Although studies have explored the predictors of book reading interest among children, little is known about the underlying mechanism that helps children become interested in reading books. This study attempt to demonstrate: (1) how book-reading interest is driven by reasons for choosing books (recommendation or personal preference), (2) how students with high and low academic achievements are motivated by different thinking pathways, and (3) how home scholarly culture improves book-reading interest through such pathways. Using Bayesian analysis on a dataset of survey responses from 4966 Vietnamese secondary students (11–15 years old, sixth to ninth grade), we found: (i) Reading interest is positively associated with a book recommendation and parental book reading activities (parents read books to children); (ii) High-achieving students are more interested in reading books if they can choose those books according to personal preferences; (iii) Parental book reading activities can promote book reading interest through recommendations and also by understanding children’s personal preferences. We advocate a more personalized approach in educational policymaking, curriculum design, and home scholarly culture based on students’ abilities and perceptions.

Abstract:
The features of book distribution systems in different countries of the world are investigated. The role of book clubs and book chains in the way of a book to its reader is revealed. The leading role of the state support for book publishing is outlined. Factors of state support for book publishing and book distribution, such as creating reading development programs, facilitating the opening of new bookstores, organizing book fairs, exhibitions, festivals and other events to support the book, establishing literary prizes and competitions, replenishing library funds, protecting copyright, have been identified. Possibilities of introduction of experience of leading countries of the world (in particular Canada) in support of book publishing and book distribution industry, such as granting of preferential credits, influence on book pricing, introduction of a "fixed" price during book realization, are investigated. The media habits of the inhabitants of different countries of the world have been researched, it has been found out how much time a person spends watching TV programs, listening to music on the radio, reading. Although in the modern world, residents are spending less and less time on the book, preferring other types of entertainment and leisure, the books are no less printable, book publishing remains a large business, valued at $ 151 billion and generating more than cinema, magazines, video games and music. In an effort to survive, book publishers are united in media conglomerates, most of their profits are from book sales. The readers' preferences been investigated. The competitiveness of paper and e-books has been investigated too. The advantages of paper books over e-books have been proved. Research shows that e-books are growing in popularity, but growth has slowed slightly since 2016. It is emphasized that paper books are the basis of reader's attention and demand.

Abstract:
Back in 2013, Rob Witcher, in his first NBC, mused on the future of academic publishing, and especially the potential impact of open access and e-books on traditional book reviews. Reading these lines five years later as incoming Reviews Editor, it is striking how little an impression e-books in particular have made on the market, and more generally how persistent print editions of both journals (includingAntiquity) and books have remained in the face of rapidly changing digital technologies. Sales of major e-reader brands have declined since their height in 2014, at least in the UK, and e-book sales have stabilised since then at around 25 per cent of all book purchases. AtAntiquity, we still receive upwards of 300 books per year, and send out over 120 to review across the six issues. NBC is an attempt to provide some critical perspective on a selection of the remaining books, many of which merit reviews in their own right but cannot be included for reasons of space. This section will continue in much the same manner as in the past, safe in the knowledge that, as Groucho Marx put it, ‘Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend . . .’ (the second half of the quotation is less relevant here but perhaps worth including—‘. . . inside of a dog, it's too dark to read’).

Abstract:
Book design is carried out and elaborated within a space of compact size and limited storage amount. It is not easy to accomplish a novel attractive book design, as innovation is required and connotation of books should be embodied. Especially when faced with the impact from electronic media, we have difficulty designing a book with a strong material sense and rich space and time association if we continue to design a book using single thought for publishment without the sense updating. Conceptual book design, based on the traditional books, is an attempt to seek a new morphological book form which fully incarnates the personality and connotation of a book and seeks to display the possibilities of the book contents. This paper mainly explores the morphosemantic meaning in conceptual book design and expounds features and expressions of morph morphosemantic of conceptual books, in order to contribute to the development of book design.

Abstract:
Alongside Catullus and Ovid, Martial is the Latin writer who tells us most about the ancient book, and he receives detailed treatment in most histories of ancient book production: he has a chapter to himself, for instance, in Roberts and Skeats' The Birth of the Codex. Books and reading are a central concern of his poetry from his very first publications: around 10-15% of the epigrams deal with this theme. The topic has received, however, much less attention from literary critics than from scholars interested in the Realien of ancient book production, and those who have paid attention to it have tended to play down the importance of the published books compared to the ‘occasional’ reception of the epigrams either through recitation or through informal pamphlets (the so-called ‘libelli’ prominent in the important work of Peter White). Even John Sullivan, who was more aware than many of the importance of the book in Martial, sees the published books as ‘open-ended collections, to which material could be added as it became available or necessary’ and declares that ‘Martial is less careful about the endings of his books…than about their beginnings and general structure’. I have suggested elsewhere that, on the contrary, the endings of Martial's books may be seen as possessing particularly ingenious effects of closure, and in general it seems to me that the engagement with reception in book-form shown by Martial's epigrams is extremely sophisticated.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), book collecting evolved from an elite pastime into a widespread obsession. ‘Bibliophilia’—the passionate love for books—drove many book collectors to exhaust their fortunes or even trade their concubines for books. As books became indispensable towards gaining respectability in Chinese society, scholars, merchants, and landowners ensured that their residences were thoroughly infused with the prestigious “fragrance of books”. Some literati even regarded book collecting as a man’s most important undertaking in life. Ming private book collectors broke away from tradition and made their private collections available for others to view, exchange, or copy, greatly promoting the circulation of books. Through their incredible attention to the collection, classification, storage, and proofreading of books, Ming bibliophiles contributed enormously to the preservation and transmission of Chinese culture.

Abstract:
This article investigates the complex object of the political book. Mobilising Deleuze and Guattari's typology of the book, the article assesses the material properties of four specific books (or sets of books): Mao Zedong's ‘Little Red Book’, Russian Futurist books, Antonin Artaud's paper ‘spells’, and Guy Debord and Asger Jorn's ‘anti-book’ Mémoires. Highly critical of the dominant mode of the political book, what they call the ‘root-book’, Deleuze and Guattari draw attention to the troubling religious structures and passions that order its field. Here the book internalises the world as the origin and source of truth and authority – a mode of existence as dear to the avant-garde as it is to religious formations: ‘Wagner, Mallarmé, and Joyce, Marx and Freud: still Bibles.’ But the book also features in Deleuze and Guattari's counter-figure of the ‘rhizome-book’, where they foreground the dynamic materiality of this medium: ‘A book has neither object nor subject; it is made of variously formed matters, and very different dates and speeds.’ The rhizome-book is an enticing concept for assessing the political book, yet Deleuze and Guattari pay little attention to the specific, concrete attributes of this medium. In focusing on the properties of particular books this article seeks to address that absence, and so contribute to an understanding of the political book that is fully engaged with its material forms.

Abstract:
Despite the introduction of audiobooks and e-books, printed stories still are in high demand. However, in a globalized world which is more and more ruled by mass media and technology, it is increasingly difficult for writers and publishers to promote their books. The solution is almost ironic: popular media, which is assumed to decrease readership, is turned into a tool to increase the number of readers. In 2002 the book trailer emerged as a new web-based marketing strategy for the launch of new books. Since then the appearance of the book trailer has changed considerably. The article examines specific examples and highlights methods that establish the relationship between the content of the book and its representation in the book trailer. Although guidelines apply for the production of book trailers, such as constraints relating to time and content, there are no limitations for the imagination of the producers. A book trailer may be simple, supported only by music and pictures, but they may also be as complex as short films. Additionally, book trailers are not limited to the promotion of one specific genre or age group. Depending on the viral potential of social networks such as YouTube, Facebook, and Tumblr book trailers reach a global audience and, therefore, open up new markets. It can be argued, while book trailers have not yet reached the realm of the everyday, they will gradually come to the attention of academics and this article wants to present a starting point for this development.

Abstract:
This issue inaugurates the First Book Symposium as a feature in the pages of Social Analysis. Instead of including ourselves among the journals that devote a section to book reviews in their regular issues, as we have done for many years, we feel that a more focused approach is better suited to our goal of exploring the potentials of anthropological analysis. Adopting from other journals the format of the book symposium, in which a single book is subjected to sustained critical engagement by relevant scholars, we devote it in particular to discussion of books by first-time authors. Our aim is, on the one hand, to give a platform to scholars who are not already widely known and established and, on the other, to acquaint our readers with ideas and analytical approaches that are fresh.Knut Christian Myhre, Returning Life: Language, Life Force and History in Kilimanjaro (New York: Berghahn Books, 2018), 336 pp., illustrations, bibliography, index. eBook. eISBN 9781785336669.

Abstract:
The article gives a brief characteristic of the Yusupovs’ book collection. The eighteenth century was the time when collecting got very popular in Russia. Book collections became the main part of the Russian aristocratic society collection and formed private rich collections. The library of Yusupovs’ princely family is an example of such book collection. The study of this matter involves certain difficulties because Yusupovs’ library was divided into several parts and kept in different palaces and country estates in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Spasskoe-Kotovo, Arkhangelskoe, Rakitnoe. It is known that Yusupovs’ library has consisted of about 60,000 of books, 400 of them belonged to the earliest Russian printed art. B. G. Yusupov and his wife I. M. Yusupova set up the traditions of book collecting. The Yusupovs’ library has enraptured his contemporaries. A. S. Pushkin visited this library. His monument was raised in Arkhangelskoe in the poet’s name. N. B. Yusupov inherited his grandfather’s interest in dramatic and music art, and replenished the collection with rare musical editions and claviers. He went down in history as a vice-director of the Imperial Public Library, its patron and the donator. Moreover, he wrote a book about the Yusupovs family history. Felix Yusupov inherited the writer’s talent from his grandfather N. B. Yusupov, and wrote two books. Studying the history of Yusupovs` book collection gives an idea of book and bibliographic culture development throughout the mid XVIII - early XIX centuries. Nowadays the library in Arkhangelskoe has a significant book collection, which is considered to be Russian national treasury.

Abstract:
The article considers a popular and controversial modern phenomenon — the use of books as a medium for various mixed media art forms. The author gives examples of contemporary book altering techniques, such as book carving, painting and upcycling, etc., following the trend of transforming our interaction with books into a show of craftsmanship and entertainment. The critic points out that, in order to create a visually stunning and artistically expressive altered book, artists often work with beautifully published tomes, complete with quality materials, imaginative design and moderately used look, rather than with inferior mass-produced or defective books. It is not uncommon for book alterers to use antiques or rare editions: for example, British and American book artists particularly value Victorian books. It follows that, rather than popularising and creatively reimagining the book as such, this fad causes erosion of the meaning and profanes the process of book reading and contemplating.

The publication coincides with Rubakin’s 160-th anniversary. The reviewer characterizes the book structure and the contents of its five chapters: “The Life”, “The Foreign Native”, “The Focus of N. A. Rubakin’s Creative Interests”, “Bibliopsychological Portraits”, and “The Author of Integral Philosophy”.Yu. N. Stolyarov characterizes Nicholas Rubakin as a science communicator, expert of self-education and (kids) reading guidance and, most of all, as a founder of bibliopsychological theory. The reviewer examines the key works by Rubakin for each of the above-mentioned areas, e.g. “The secret of library work success”, “What the bibliological psychology is”, The Psychology of readers and books”, “Importance of the books”, “On the methodology of the book business”, “The book market in Soviet Russia and its psychology”. The reviewer makes a focus on Rubakin’s masterwork –“Among books” and on Stolyarov’s footnotes that expand the book text and reader knowledge, and points to the book design.

WFZ Book Store is a Book Store that provides various types of books. The sales process is done offline where the costumer has to visit the store to make a purchase. The process of recording data using the ledger makes it difficult for WFZ Book Store to make sales reports because it has to collect transaction data in the ledger, it causes difficulties to know the available Book stock because it has to check every sales transaction in the ledger. WFZ Book Store requires an information system that can manage book sales data onlineagarcostumers can easily view book data, stockand book online reservations. With the wfz Book Store information system can facilitate the customer in managing book data and store customer data that has made transactions also WFZ Book Store does not find it difficult to provide book purchase transaction data for the customer, so that the data can be used for book recommendations by finding the set of data that most often appear in a data set. Datamining techniques have been widely used to overcome existing problems, one of which is the application of a-priori algorithms to find association rules formed from book purchase transaction datasets. So it will be known the association between the title of the book purchased. The association rules between book titles formed from the mining process can later be used by the WFZ Book Store to increase the number of books purchased, besides that it can be used for the procurement of books from the association rules of frequently purchased books, it can also be developed into a knowledge base for the book purchase recommendation system. The Output is in the form of a priori algorithm analysis software.

Abstract:
This article considers the book form itself as an ornamental object. The binding, paper and ink appeal to the senses and all add to experience of the reader. The future is a place of e-books, online publications and Instagram posts, and yet this arguably makes the carefully considered design of the book form even more important in the physical books that we do chose to view. The study examines a series of examples, drawing from artists' books, pop-up books and mainstream publishing. The work draws strongly on the collection of pop-up books at the National Library of Scotland and the artists' book collection at Edinburgh College of Art, looking at both historical and contemporary works. Initially exploring how the form of the book itself can visually communicate a narrative, the study goes on reflect on the emotion associated with opening a pop-up book, as if in the presence of a theatrical production, made more extreme by the embellishments employed. The place of the book form within a digital world is considered and, finally, the emergence of decorative books in the form of colouring books related to mindfulness.

Abstract:
Since antiquity, the issue of the inconsistency between the Book of Nahum and the Book of Jonah has been addressed, one regarding both its content and its message. At various times, it was settled in different ways. The current state of biblical research seems to allow us to put forth a daring thesis that both Books have more in common than merely Nineveh as the subject matter, which they approach from a different angle. There seem to be grounds to see these two Books as vestiges of an intracanonical debate waged within the Book of the Twelve.

Abstract:
The article highlights the historical stages of development of the book trade bibliography and Books in Print systems in Great Britain. It is noted that the first and most famous attempt to compile a book trade catalog dates back to the end of the XVI century and belongs to the englishman E. Montsell, who prepared and published the "Catalog of English Printed Books", which became a model of cataloging for many subsequent authors of bibliographic works. It was found that the industrial revolution and the rapid development of industrial centers in the XVIII century, caused a rapid increase in the number of printing houses, publishing and book trade firms, thanks to which the book trade bibliography of Great Britain received a new quality — a stable periodicity of preparation and publication of bibliographic materials, as well as placement of bibliographic information on periodicals. Numerous samples of the book trade bibliography in chronological section are considered in detail, as well as the activities of the most famous companies in the production of Books in Print catalogs.

The paper looks at how publishers reacted to the COVID-19 crisis in their respective countries, what was its impact on book sales and how did the publishers adapt the production of new books to changed circumstances. In addition, the paper analyses changed attitudes of publishers towards e-books and other digital book formats that become more popular in lockdown times. The research revealed that COVID-19 lockdowns resulted in decreased sales of printed books in all four small book markets. However, sales of e-books and audiobooks slightly increased during that period. This increase in digital sales did not contribute significantly to overall results of book industries due to its small market share in all four countries.

Abstract:
From early Christian times up to the sixteenth century, books occur so often in mediaeval illumination that a study of the book as it appears within the book would involve a survey of the whole course of Western miniature painting. Despite its ubiquity, however, little has been written on the subject of the symbolism of the book in art. In The Idea of the Book in the Middle Ages, Jesse M. Gellrich takes a semiotic approach rather than the viewpoint of art history. Ernst Curtius has a chapter on “The Book as a Symbol” in his classic European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages, but he does not concern himself with artistic representation. Even so, he admits, “The subject, so far as I am aware, has hitherto been touched upon by no one but Goethe” (302). The same is true of the presence of the book in art.

Abstract: The present work aims to classify the genre of the books automatically using the Python programming language. A genre is a subset of art, literature, or music that has a distinct form, substance, and style. In many instances, a book can be classified as belonging to more than one genre. It's difficult to categorize a book or piece of literature as belonging to one genre over another. Many novels end up badly categorized or pushed under the super-genre umbrella of fiction since there is no clear criterion to determine how much of a book belongs to a given genre. Therefore, it's critical to develop a system for categorizing books and determining their relevance to a particular genre. Therefore, the current study tries to solve this challenge by combining various text categorization approaches and models to come up with the best solution

Abstract:
The aim is to investigate how digitisation and in particular e-books have changed relations between private players and public institutions within the Danish book world through a case study of eReolen, a private-public partnership functioning as common platform for public libraries’ lending of e-books in Denmark. Traditional and new models of the book world are discussed as the basis of understanding relations between the players. A new way of analysing the field outlined by literary sociologist, Professor Johan Svedjedal, is adopted. The main conclusions are that the lending of e-books has disrupted the traditional understanding and interaction between the public library system and the commercial book market. In addition, the Danish library system through the partnership has taken on a new function in relation to the commercial market, namely acting as the engine in building a market for Danish e-books.

Abstract:
The SMK Negeri 1 Siantar School Library is one of the special libraries located at the SMK Negeri 1 Siantar School. Libraries provide various kinds of library materials such as books, lessons, lesson questions, and other vocational books. After the researcher made observations, the problem that often occurred was books that were borrowed and returned books that had a non-strategic layout, so that library visitors who did not know the placement found it difficult to find the books they wanted to borrow. This research uses data mining techniques, namely the Apriori Algorithm, the Apriori Method is a method for looking for patterns of relationships between one or more items in a dataset. The Apriori method can be used for data on borrowing books at the Siantar 1 State Vocational School School Library, where the composition of the library books (B1) X_Press UN 2019 B. Abstract:
What role does book illustration play in teaching book history, and how can libraries best support it? This article looks briefly at the lack of interest in book illustration as part of traditional historical bibliography and its increasing importance in the wider field of book history. Using the example of the London Rare Books School, an international summer school, it outlines the nature of the books needed and the extent to which a teaching collection may supply them. It further discusses how and why librarians and teaching staff can collaborate fruitfully to satisfy demand.
