Abstract:
This paper introduces the American Library Association’s award (Batchelder) for most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States, to encourage American publishers, librarians, and booksellers to seek out superior children’s books abroad and to promote communication among the peoples of the world. The purpose of the introduction is to share our philosophy, supported by theory, as to the need for young people to read and respond to intimate, literary, and thematic stories from other cultures and countries in order to develop into empathetic international citizens. Such philosophy relates to the scholarly contentions of Carl Tomlinson, author of “Children’s Books From Other Countries”; Mildred Batchelder, the consummate former director of the American Library Services for Children division of the ALA, after whom the award is named; and Louise Rosenblatt, well-known reader response theorist. Specifically, a discussion of these theorists’ perspectives will reveal sharing Batchelder books, rather than just factual websites or textbook information about the peoples and places on our globe, helps young people build a foundation of international understanding; brings the experiences of young people in other countries to life, revealing “living, breathing” individuals and diminishing stereotypes; and assists in raising awareness as to how each member of the international community may benefit, one from the other. The authors’ method will be to discuss and summarize several significant Batchelder titles, also providing suggestions for curricular, reader-response tie-ins associated with each title, presenting librarians with myriad means by which these treasured books may be shared with young people. The activities suggested will heavily consider Rosenblatt’s “mirror to window” and aesthetic reader response assertions. Hopefully, both librarians and booksellers will become knowledgeable of the award titles and work to collect and stock, respectively, these international treasures in libraries and stores, right along with Newbery and Caldecott titles, hence adopting the role of creating internationally aware readers and citizens within our diverse and multicultural world. The implications of such awareness are significant at both a micro and macro level. First, at the micro level, engaged students, reading about and connecting to “exotic” children from cultures other than their own, will strengthen reading fluency and language arts skills. The distinctive, differing styles and points-of-view in these texts will assist in the understanding of literary elements, while also, on a human rather than textbook level, disclosing major world issues of both the past and present. Additionally, the internationalization of curricula will be enhanced if librarians are aware of the proposed methods. At the macro level, the titles serve to nurture the value of international understanding and respect amongst peoples of the world, develop humane and supportive world citizens, and confirm humanity’s universal experiences, overshadowing differences and conflicts.

Abstract:
The study sought to obtain an insightful understanding of the life-world of youth who have not only experienced long-term separation from their biological parents and families but who have also simultaneously experienced prolonged institutional life in a children'e home. Using a descriptive praxis in the context of an existential phenomenological perspective, the study elicited from participants written descriptions of their personal experiences of the phenomenon of self-fulfilment. The data were structurally analysed, expressed in the form of extended descriptions and utilised as the basis for an exposition/appreciation of the life-world relationships of institutional youth. The target group of teenagers was drawn from a specific children's home. However, in order to enhance the findings of the study, data from a comparative group of youth from intact families in the community were also utilised. The study yielded some useful comparative insights which not only formed the basis for certain recommendations but also served as directions for future research. Hopefully, these recommendations and research proposals will be of some immediate interest and comfort to both reeearchers and practitioners in the field of residential child and youth care

Luehe, Ulrike. "Children, youth and transitional justice in Northern Uganda." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/3738.

Full text
Abstract:
With the end of the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict in northern Uganda, efforts of dealing with the violent past and paving the way for a more just, peaceful future are now taking shape in Uganda and especially the northern region. Existing frameworks and proposals for transitional justice emphasize traditional justice, the option of establishing a truth commission, formal justice and reparations most prominently. Despite the strong involvement of children and youths in the conflict – as victims and perpetrators – their inclusion in, needs for and expectations of transitional justice have barely been explored or acknowledged. This thesis thus aims at exploring ways in which formerly abducted children can be included in such processes in meaningful ways that accommodate for their needs and preferences. Since the existing research and literature on the field of child soldiers and transitional justice is rather limited, field work has been conducted in northern Uganda in November and December of 2012. A total of 17 people were interviewed representing a variety of local, national and international organizations as well as government agencies specializing in the fields of transitional justice or child protection, and rehabilitation of former child soldiers. Semistructured interviews with open-ended questions were conducted and the gathered qualitative data was used to substantiate, complement or fill gaps in the existing body of research on the topic. The findings of this thesis conclude that there is a need for comprehensive, inclusive transitional justice mechanisms that acknowledge former abductees in their dual role as victims and perpetrators. A desire for active government involvement and participation in these processes has been emphasized strongly. The research has furthermore shown the need for transitional justice mechanisms to foster agency and the empowerment of formerly abducted children and youths in order to enable them to become active, resourceful members of their communities.

Roche, Cathy. "No Más Violencia: Family Conflict and Youth Aggression among Latino Youth." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/psych_diss/52.

Full text
Abstract:
This research examined the link between family conflict and youth aggression in Latino families. Attitudes toward aggression were tested as a mediator of this link, whereas family constellation variables (cohesion, responsibilities, birth order, and gender) were tested as moderators. This model was tested in a longitudinal community sample of 143 youth (study 1) and in a sample of 35 sibling dyads exposed to domestic violence (study 2). Differences between the two studies supported the notion that domestic violence and family conflict are distinct phenomena. For example, fairness did not have any main effects or interaction effects on behavioral outcomes in study 1. However, fairness had a negative association with aggression for oldest siblings in study 2. Future directions are discussed including a call for a developmental-ecological-feminist theory and participatory action research.

Can, Isin. "Youth In The 1980s In Turkey: Children Of Crisis." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/3/12612064/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Turkey is an arena of social struggles for young people who have often been repressed, marginalized, invalidated, isolated and stereotyped by the dominant discourses that shape the existence of youth. This could be related to the rapidly changing circumstances that anticipate the milieu of frequent crises Turkey has been associated with. This thesis is an attempt to contribute to an understanding of the social patterns that are reflections of the mediated crisis and their role in identity formation processes of youth in the 1980s. It focuses on the post-1980 generation in Turkey. The study analyzes constructions and representations of youth in Turkey, particularly between 1980 and 1990. Institutional ethnography was used in order to understand the emergence of the post-1980 generation, as well as to draw a picture of politics and culture in the 1980s, focusing on identity politics to comprehend the public discourse in which this generation was represented.

Hollingsworth, K. L. "The rights and responsibilities of children in youth crime." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604172.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines children’s rights and responsibilities in the area of youth crime within the context of the domestic incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights and the increasing emphasis within Government policy of the need to hold children responsible for their offending behaviour. The mechanisms for securing the responsibility of children within youth crime have widened since the Labour Party was elected to government in 1997, prompting two questions. Firstly, has the increased responsibilisation of children been met by an increased protection of their human rights? Secondly, does an emphasis on responsibility detract from the child’s needs, vulnerabilities and limited competence? It is argued that, in contrast to the child in the family law context, the child in the criminal law holds a dual status: he is both offender and child. This dual status affects the type of rights available to the child, and the way in which those rights are protected. In particular, it is noted that the child’s status varies at different stages of the youth justice process, and that in turn, there is a variation in the type of rights being protected. Specifically, children’s rights theory is drawn on to distinguish the types of rights the child has: rights qua child (clustered around ideas of welfare and care and protection); and rights qua person (shared in common with adults and which are based on notions of autonomy). A broadly sequential approach is taken: first, the pre-crime context and the use of preventative orders is examined, followed by a consideration of the pre-court stage of police investigation and the diversion of young people away from the criminal courts, then the rights of the child in court are explored, and finally attention turns to the sentencing framework.

Abstract:
The aim was to study how school professionals working with newly arrived immigrant children and youth experience how these students integrate into the school. The study is a qualitative research conducted in Sweden. The first part of the research focused on studying what factors affect the integration of newly arrived immigrant in schools while the second part focused on what strategy is used to ensure their integration. The findings of the study were thematically analyzed using the ecological systems theory as a framework of analysis. Through semi-structured interviews, four teachers and a counsellor expressed their perception on the integration of newly arrived immigrants’ student into schools. The result showed that the teachers are the core agent for integration within schools. It was shown that past experiences, family, social connections, educational background, school system, migration policies, culture are important factors that affect the integration process of these students.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of categorization has a great impact on community structure. This essay describes one of the most established and explicit categories - male and female – as a result of the categorization processes which constantly are going on. The structures’ and categories’ existence and reproduction can be found in all social interactions, and my main hypothesis is that an important part of the reproduction of our gender identities consist of the legacy we give to children. This study aims to shed light on whether there is a significant way of describing gender identities in children's books. The essay has a theoretical basis of a feminist gender- and discourse theory. The issue is answered by a discourse analytical study of children's books. The result shows that in many cases there is a significant way of describing the different sexes, and that there are clear divisions in what is described as male or female. This pattern of a separation of the sexes is sometimes subtle and sometimes pronounced, but based on theories and previous research it is possible to show that there actually seems to be a pattern. The most central in the paper is the visualization of the dialectical relationship between text and image in children's books and the public discourse they are part of.

Pascoe, Margaret Joy. "A situation analysis of street children in Harare, Zimbabwe." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26553.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of children on the streets of Harare has been increasing over the last five years. The majority of these children appear to be of school-going age. Who are these children? Where do they live? Why are they not attending school? This study is an attempt to provide answers for these questions, to evaluate current policy and programmes for street children and to promote appropriate and effective policy measures. A convenience sample of two hundred and eight children, who fulfilled the definition of street child used in the study, were interviewed using a questionnaire and focus group discussions. A number of children's homes, a probation centre and a remand home were visited and personnel from non-governmental organisations working with street children were interviewed. The study found that the majority of children were male (89%), and the age distribution ranged from six to seventeen years. The mean time period spent on the street was 18,4 months. The most common reason for leaving home was that the family was unable to support the child. Most of the children slept in a nearby squatter settlement or at the city railway station. The most popular income generating activity was guarding motor vehicles. Five of the children were attending alternative education programmes and one third had never attended school. The most common medical conditions were acute respiratory infections, diarrhoeal disease and skin rashes. Some of the children had suffered physical (12) and /or sexual (10) abuse while on the street. Substance abuse, notably glue sniffing, was widespread with 78% of the children admitting to this activity. A general attitude of hopelessness prevailed among the children and few could envisage brighter prospects for the future. Short term measures to improve the children's lives on the street must be taken, but the long-term solution requires a broad attack on poverty in order to eradicate the root problems that force children onto the streets. Recommendation were aimed at the major role players in the lives of street children - the Government, the Department of Social Welfare, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and Non-Governmental Organisations.

Saunders, Travis J. "The Health Impact of Sedentary Behaviour In Children and Youth." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26178.

Full text
Abstract:
Emerging evidence suggests that sedentary behaviour is independently associated with cardiometabolic disease risk in school-aged children and youth. This thesis includes 4 related studies in the pursuit of 2 objectives: 1) To determine the cross-sectional association of sedentary time, interruptions in sedentary time, sedentary bout length, and total movement variability with markers of cardiometabolic disease risk among children and youth, and 2) To examine the impact of 1-day of prolonged sedentary behaviour, with and without interruptions or structured physical activity, on markers of cardiometabolic disease risk, hunger, food intake and spontaneous physical activity levels in children and youth. In Study 1, we found that interruptions in sedentary time and short bouts of sedentary time were beneficially associated with clustered cardiometabolic disease risk in boys and girls aged 8-11 years, independent of total sedentary time, moderate-and-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and other confounders (all p<0.05), while the opposite was true for screen based sedentary behaviours. In Study 2, we found that movement variability (minute-to-minute changes in movement intensity) was negatively associated with clustered cardiometabolic disease risk and systolic blood pressure independent of MVPA, sedentary time and other covariates in a representative sample of American children and youth aged 12-17 years (all p<0.05). In Studies 3 and 4, we found that prolonged sitting, with or without interruptions and structured MVPA did not result in acute changes in markers of cardiometabolic disease risk, nor subsequent ad libitum food intake or physical activity levels in healthy children aged 10-14 years (all p ≥0.05). Taken together, the studies that make up this thesis suggest that optimal levels of cardiometabolic disease risk are most likely to be seen in children who limit their time engaging in screen-based sedentary behaviours, who frequently interrupt their sedentary time, and who have high levels of variability in their movement behaviours.

Abstract:
Focusing on the period 1940–1942, this thesis investigates the nature of the relationship between the Vichy regime and Jews of French citizenship who found themselves under its control. Despite Vichy’s implication in the Holocaust, this study examines the possibility for convergence, however partial and temporary, between Vichy’s plans for regeneration and Jewish ambitions to participate in the New Order. This investigation aims to explain the seemingly contradictory circumstances in which a French Jew could be at once persecuted under Vichy’s anti-Semitic legislation, and rewarded for the promotion of certain French values by the government’s programme of National Revolution. This unstudied dilemma is explored in this thesis through an examination of French Jewish youth. An analysis of this social category provides a point of entry into the ambivalences of Vichy’s policies. While Vichy enacted legislation in order to marginalise Jewish participation in the national community, the regime was also emphatically in favour of French Jewish youth contributing to the National Revolution. Methodologically this study moves away from the long-established categories of resistance, rescue and persecution. Rather than merely examining Jewish youth’s activities during the establishment of the Vichy regime as a period of formation and preparation for later resistance or rescue activity, this study seeks to investigate the ways in which, from 1940–1942, the Vichy regime and French Jewish youth sought to coexist. This aspect of the war years has almost entirely disappeared from France’s collective memory and from the historiographical debates over Vichy and the Jews.

Objective: Parenting behaviors such as parental psychological control and rejection play a role in the development and maintenance of childhood anxiety. The current study examined the potential moderating role of family functioning in the relationship between parenting behavior (i.e., youth-perceived maternal involvement; autonomy granting) and youth anxiety symptoms. The study also examined the moderating role of youth characteristics (age; comorbid symptoms) and maternal symptoms in the relationship between parenting/family factors and youth anxiety. Method: Participants were mothers and 88 youth (ages 6 to 17 years) who met DSM-IV-TR criteria for an anxiety disorder. Parenting/family variables and youth and maternal symptoms were measured using semi-structured diagnostic interviews and parent- and child-reports. Results: Regression analyses indicated that youth perceived maternal autonomy granting, but not parental involvement, was inversely associated with youth self-reported anxiety. Mother-reported family dysfunction was associated with mother-reported youth anxiety. Youth age, depressive symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms were found to be significant moderators of the relationship between parenting behavior and child anxiety. Family dysfunction did not play a significant moderating role in the relationship between parenting behavior and child anxiety. Discussion: Clinical implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract:
Introduction: Mood disorders are a serious burden on Canadians. Physical and sedentary activity are easily modifiable risk factors for many diseases. An association with depression could have important implications Objective: To investigate any cross-sectional or longitudinal association between physical activity, sedentary activity, and depression in the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY). Methods: These studies used both a stacked cross-sectional and a trajectory/latent class analysis design Univariate and multivariate multinomial logistic regressions were used to assess the relationship between physical and sedentary activity and depression using the emotional disorder-anxiety scale for children and youth available in the NLSCY. Results: When accounting for covariates, physically inactive respondents had increased odds of higher depressive symptom scores. Sedentary activity was only statistically significantly associated with depressive symptoms in the cross-sectional design. Conclusions: Physical inactivity is significantly associated to depressive symptomatology. The relationship between sedentary activity and depression is inconclusive.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Children's Theatre, although appreciated by participants, has largely been marginalized, even by practitioners in theatre. It is still viewed as a lesser form oftheatre and as a dumping ground for resources from adult theatre. There are two main areas of focus as far as the field of drama for children is concerned. Both areas are based on the notion that play is an important and beneficial part of child development and that dramatic play is a natural development of free play. This study examines the similiarities and differences between the two approaches. The one area concerns itself with creative or educational drama where the child participates in drama activities, usually within a classroom situation. The other area, which is, in fact, the main focus of this study, concerns itself with theatrical presentation for children, i.e. Children's Theatre. Children's Theatre, with adults as the performers, is the most familiar form of Children's Theatre and yet, the one form which directly influences most children, in particular through participation in the school play, is Children's Theatre where children are the performers themselves, in other words, a form of participational theatre. This form of theatre has the potential for influencing children's lives immensely and yet it is often left to persons with no expertise in the field to lead such projects. The opportunity for truly enriching the participants' lives is often lost through poor methodology. Historically, the aims and values set for Children's Theatre have also undergone development to the point where a synthesis has been reached where equal emphasis is to be placed on the quality of the end product as well as the process by which such end product has been reached. A number of problems and issues specific to working in Children's Theatre are examined as they occur in different settings. These include problems concerning script, venue, the child audience and audience participation and problems dealing specifically with the process of directing a cast of children. Possible solutions to these problems are investigated. An approach, based on the theories of practitioners in the field, as well as the results of a number of practical projects, will be formulated. The practical projects will be used to investigate certain viewpoints expressed by practitioners in the field. The approach formulated should not only encourage work of a high artistic standard but should also be based on sound educational principles. Central to this is the approach and style of the director who, in Children's Theatre, is far more than just a director of a theatrical presentation. The director in Children's Theatre is always teacher and director at once.

Maynard, Sally. "Books with pictures and conversations? : a study of electronic books for children and their readers." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2001. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7569.

Full text
Abstract:
For the past 500 years, the printed page has served as the basic and major means of storing and presenting information and has become an everyday tool which most of us take for granted. Despite the obvious usefulness and universal nature of the printed book, however, the development of electronic technologies has led to the evolution of the concept of the electronic book. This represents a significant new medium, which offers added value to the printed book through its potential for including other media in addition to text on its pages. The thesis takes the electronic book as its main theme, putting particular emphasis on its relevance to children. The thesis includes a discussion of whether electronic books can encourage children to read both more electronic and printed books, which establishes that television, film and audio versions of texts do encourage the reading of printed editions (and vice versa). The conclusion is reached that electronic books may have the potential to exhibit the same effect, depending how similar they are to television, film and audio. The nature of classic texts and their currently decreasing popularity are considered, in addition to whether the electronic medium can and should encourage children to read more classics. An increasing awareness of the classics derived from media other than print is identified, leading to children having misconceptions about the texts. It is concluded that electronic books might have the power to bridge the gap between print and other media, introducing children to the classics in a form which is closer to the original text. An attempt was made to identify the elements which make an author popular in order that these could be incorporated into electronic books to make them more desired as reading material. Emphasising the views of children themselves, rather than critics, parents and other adults, a study investigated the popularity with young readers of the writer Roald Dahl. Participants found some qualities and characteristics in common between works by Dahl, thereby rendering them different from other books. Identifying what children like about a certain author would enable the inclusion of the desired elements into electronic books, thus encouraging children to read such books. Leading on from the potential increase in children reading electronic texts, the proposition is investigated that the medium on which a book is presented affects the reader's comprehension of, and satisfaction with the book. In order to investigate the effect of the electronic medium on comprehension, reading ability and speed, a study of user interaction with electronic books was carried out comparing children reading an electronic book incorporating the book metaphor with children reading the same text in two different printed versions. No evidence was found to suggest that the added effects and visual dimension offered by the electronic book reduced participants' comprehension of the text. Indeed, there was an indication that electronic books of this kind might actually aid the reader's comprehension of a text. If children are to read electronic books, where will they get them from? The embracing of the technology of electronic books is likely to have an effect on the principal book suppliers. The thesis therefore reports two questionnaire studies. The first investigates the opinions of children's librarians on the subject of electronic books, and the second concentrates on booksellers. Notable conclusions were that there is a positive attitude towards including electronic books as part of the children's library service, and a high proportion of libraries offer access to them, the majority through main libraries. Smaller book shops had not entered the field of selling electronic books in great numbers, and that there was general uncertainty about the place of such texts in such outlets. Respondents to both surveys believed that electronic books are durable, and can exist alongside the printed items within their concerns. Lastly, parents and schools have a role in making electronic books available to children. Due to the lack of research on the attitudes of parents and representatives of schools concerning electronic books, the thesis includes a discussion of existing surveys and studies of computer equipment in homes, schools and public libraries in order to gauge the involvement of parents and schools. This research shows that the picture of access to computer equipment for children is fairly inconsistent across the three sources under consideration. A general discussion follows, and overall conclusions are drawn, including that: the suggestion that electronic books can encourage children to read represents an area that is lacking in research and which would merit further work; the relationship between the printed book and its electronic counterpart is a symbiotic one; and the portability of electronic books is currently not of major significance, although this is likely to change with the increasing prominence of dedicated e-book readers.
