Abstract:

Globally, many academic e-books are available in user-friendly forms like PDF and HTML that can be accessed on laptops, iPads, and smartphones, even though some e-books require a special e-book reader. However, university students find it difficult to access e-books because some of the university libraries have few computers that hold the downloaded e-books, which are stored in a folder, and little effort has been made as a result; there is low usage of e-books. The project’s goal was to investigate how e-book applications work and how students at Kabale University can access e-books via mobile phone or tablet. The objectives of the project were to investigate the existing e-books application, design and develop the e-books application, and test and validate the developed application that enables students at Kabale University to access e-books simultaneously. The literature review helped me read a number of pieces of literature about e-book applications. They were information sources about the E-books application such as the internet, books, journals, and newspapers, among others. The use of existing information from the library helped to develop a model to predict the E-book application and testing of the application using Android smartphones. It was concluded that the implementation of the e-book’s application was done using Android to enable users to access the books on their mobile phones or tablets. The study recommends that the administrator of the system should be taken through the tasks in order to be able to upload books ready for the application

Abstract:

The use of books by students needs to be checked and evaluated periodically to see the book's quality. The book "Unskilled Jobs in West Kalimantan" was assessed to catch readers' responses in the context of the physical appearance of the book and its content. The research was carried out by distributing a mixed questionnaire containing book evaluation and understanding of the books read. Based on the research results, readers responded positively to the book's physical aspects, including layout, design, and cover. Apart from that, the assessment of the book's contents in terms of diction also received a positive response. Readers understand the reading in the book more quickly in a short time. This book is designed for intermediate-level readers. It can be concluded that the book Unskilled Jobs in West Kalimantan meets readers' expectations at the intermediate level.

Abstract:

Touching and holding books does not usually evoke the language of sensation. Touching a book indexes the reader in relationship to the book. Holding a book of scripture indexes a person as faithful to the beliefs and practices that are commonly associated with that scripture. In portraiture, the direction of a book’s indexical function is usually clear. Scribes, professors, lawyers and politicians pose in their libraries, often with book in hand, to depict themselves as scholars. The fact that scriptures are books makes a vocabulary of textual agency available for describing their symbolic function. The indexical link between book and person gains force from the fact that books and people share the quality of interiority. We think of both books and people as material containers of immaterial ideas. Therefore, images of people with books invite viewers to consider the relationship between their invisible ideas. However, art that portrays a god or goddess holding a scripture conveys a tighter indexical relationship, often to the point of collapsing any distinction between them.

Abstract:

I meant to highlight examples of issues in the sciences of Qur'anic readings and their benefits found in the biographies of Qur'anic readers in Al-Dhahabi's -(died 748 AH)- biographies books, especially his book: (Quranic Biographies Readers). The most important research objectives are to highlight the aspects of the science of Quranic recitations from Al-Dhahabi's book (Quranic Biographies Readers), refer to his efforts, show the book's importance, and compare it with similar books. Following the descriptive methods, I described the aspects of the science of Quranic recitations from Al-Dhahabi's biographies books of readers and compared them with similar books. The essential results are Al-Dhahabi's position in Quran readings, the position of his books, and highlighting the manifestations of his interest in the science of Quran readings. The most important recommendations: Highlight the essential manifestations of the sciences of Quran reading from various biographies and books and show the efforts of their authors.

Abstract:

The Library of the State Vocational School of Jenawi implements a manual database system where the transaction process is slow and inefficient. The frequent delay in returning books also adds to the problems. This study aims to build a library application that manages library data, including member data, borrowing-returning books data, calculating fines for returning books, and book searches. The method used is SDLC (System Development Life Cycle) which consists of the analysis, design, implementation and testing. The application built with Delphi can manage library data, handle book circulation, and automatically send Short Message Service (SMS) to the borrower as a reminder of the book's return schedule.

Abstract:

This research analyzed the relationship between multiple elements of a book's classifica-tion through natural language processing and machine learning. This paper used SVM and KNN to classify books according to the titles and author respectively. Also, books are categorized by summary through Decision Tree, Nave Bayes and BERT. In the end, this work compared effects of these methods. Our findings show that 1) books have different levels of categorical characteristics in various parts of the book 2) through combining the title, author, and summary of the book, more accurate classification results were obtained 3) BERT achieved more accurate recognition compared to a variety of other algorithms used.

Our purpose is the realization of a system able to access objects at remote sites by integrating Internet technologies and robotic engineering developments such as mobile robots. Concretely, we are developing a system that uses a robot for browsing remote books via the Internet. To extract books, the robot must recognize the book’s pose-feature (position, angle, and thickness). This paper describes the sensor developed for recognizing the position of books and planning book extraction in a general library environment, and reviews experimental results.

Abstract:

In this article, we offer information about the specific challenges US Latino immigrant children face. We then determine which of these challenges are included in 72 award winning children’s picture books, specifically created for and/or about Latino children. Our analysis offers information to assist school-based mental health professionals, children’s librarians, educators, and parents in prescriptively selecting books that align with Latino children’s social emotional needs. Additionally, we analysed each book’s proportion of Spanish/English text and described the book’s targeted age level and Horn Book Guide rating. From our perspective, books containing colorful illustrations that include Latino children, realistic situations, familiar Spanish words and phrases, and true-to-life characters help Latino children engage and identify with these stories. Children’s book author Pat Mora also explains her perceptions of quality children’s literature. Although this article is specific to Latino children’s literature, implications are offered that generalize to other ethnic and cultural groups that are typically underrepresented in children’s literature.

Insights, 34(1), 26. http://doi.org/10.1629/uksg.562 Abstract Objective – To inform future collecting decisions by ascertaining the circulation longevity of print books within an academic library. Design – Longitudinal data analysis of two circulation datasets. Setting – Library catalogue of a small public university in Canada. Subjects – 10,002 print books acquired between 1991 and 1996 with a first circulation year between 1991 and 2000 (part 1); 4,060 print books acquired and with a first circulation year between 2008 and 2011 (part 2A); 35,860 print books acquired since 1991 with a first circulation year between 2008 and 2011 (parts 2B). Methods – The researcher established two datasets by selecting books with viable circulation data from the institution’s holdings. Using each book’s Library of Congress classification number, the researcher mapped each book to three other categorization schemes. The first scheme, Becher-Biglan topology, categorizes books as belonging to either applied or hard and pure or soft fields of study. The second scheme, called in the paper “major subjects,” uses a traditional broad subject categorization (e.g. arts, sciences, health, etc.), and the third scheme categorizes books by the academic programs at the researcher’s institution. The researcher then analyzed the circulation data through the lens of these three categorization schemes. Main Results – Part 1, which considered the collection’s older circulated books, found that books had an average circulation longevity of 10 years. About 14% of books circulated for only one year, and about 24% of books circulated for less than five years. Among the newer books considered in Part 2, 37% circulated for just one year and 64% had a circulation longevity of four years. Conclusion – Books in applied and hard fields generally have greater longevity compared to pure and soft fields. Books in professional and STEM fields generally have greater longevity than books in the humanities and arts, contrary to conventional library wisdom. Print book circulation longevity appears to be dropping. Subscription and on-demand acquisitions options may prove to be a more efficacious use of resources than ‘just-in-case’ print collecting.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the Roman book, its materials and manufacture, the process of composition, how it was 'published' and distributed, the role of a literary text in an oral society, and how the book contributed both to the selfself- justification of the ruling elite and to popular culture. It rejects the traditional picture of how 'publishing' took place in the period 80 BCE to 120 CE, the period of greatest Latin literary productivity, and substitutes a different picture, based on the literary evidence, of what a Roman author did to gain recognition. The roles of alleged 'publishers', bookshops and libraries are discussed. Also discussed are the pros and cons of materials (papyrus versus parchment or paper), format (Roman scroll versus codex) and presentation of text (without punctuation or word spaces). The thesis argues that retention or adoption of papyrus, the scroll and the 'river of letters' was neither conservative nor retrograde, but derived from the social circumstances and types of use of the Roman book. The contribution of slaves as the 'enabling infrastructure' of Roman literary life is emphasised. As a physical object, the Roman book is recognised as having a range of functions - cultural icon, elegant prestige symbol, item in a gift-exchange culture, memento to the author's life. The text itself is defined as an 'enabling device' which, like a music score, is both a record of some past oral performance or reading-aloud, and a means to generate future oral performances, whether private readings (probably aloud), after-dinner entertainments, theatrical performances, or adaptations as libretti for the Roman dance theatre (the 'pantomime'). The hazards that faced a Roman book and its author are discussed, ranging from bookworms and fire to imperial book-burning and treason. The thesis concludes that the Roman book was both a product of, and contributor to, Rome's elite culture, and a product of, and contributor to, the common fund of references and stories that helped to define for all classes what 'being Roman' meant as part of their 'Romanitas'.

Propuesta de negocio que busca ayudar a estudiantes universitarios de Lima Metropolitana a tener un acceso fácil a los libros o textos de acuerdo a su necesidad mediante una plataforma virtual, que de una forma dinámica y amigable les permita comprar y vender libros de su interés; así como también a ahorrar o ganar dinero a través de la compra o venta de libros y/o textos. El objetivo directo del negocio es que servir como medio para enlazar a los vendedores y compradores, donde se puedan realizar acuerdos que beneficien a ambas partes, mediante las leyes de la oferta y la demanda. Es una nueva propuesta dentro del mercado de Lima Metropolitana, ya que no se ha encontrado hasta el momento algo similar que pueda cubrir esta necesidad. En base a información obtenida del Instituto Nacional de Estadisticas e Informática, sabemos que existen 91 universidades privadas, de las cuales, 42 dictan clases en Lima Metropolitana. Asi también, sabemos que la industria TIC se encuentra en plena expansión en nuestro país según el último informe de INEI, el cual indica que en nuestro país se ha incrementado el nivel de acceso al internet de un 0.5% en 1995 a 23% para el 2014, lo cual es beneficioso para nuestro negocio.<br>Trabajo de investigación

Volume two is an artist's book and although it is part of the project I have set myself, it is not being submitted with the theoretical component of the MA dissertation, but as part of the practical component.' -- Abstract.<br>Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2007.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The thesis investigates the contemporary practice of book art, examining in particular the manner in which it fits both into the tradition of the book and the tradition of art making. The thesis spans two volumes. Volume One discusses the phenomenon of the artist's book from three vantage points: the attempts to define it, the attempts to catalogue it and the attempts to interpret it. Volume Two is an artist's book and although it is part of the project I have set myself, it is not being submitted with the theoretical component of the MA dissertation, but as part of the practical component. (Briefly, one of the tasks it embarks upon is an examination of the phenomenon of thesis writing, as understood and endeavoured by myself in the production of the first volume - in this sense it is self-reflective. Another is an examination of some aspects of my attempts to make examples of artist's books, which includes an investigation of some of the recurrent themes and preoccupations of my work) Volume One is set out in three chapters. The first chapter pursues a definition of book art and the artist's book in order to draw some perimeters around the subject, and to build a picture of its nature. In the course of doing this, the ideas of some book artists and book art commentators are considered in an attempt to create a richer tapestry of understanding. In the next chapter some of the ways in which book art has been categorised are discussed. This is in order to more finely delineate the nature and scope of book art. It is also to bring some clarity to bear upon the different components and manifestations of a vast and sometimes confusing oeuvre. I then suggest a system of classification of my own which offers an adjacent model for investigating artists' books and the endeavour of book art. With the above model in place, I undertake a foray into the arena of interpretation. Here I suggest the suitability of adopting certain methodologies of interpretation that come from the field of contemporary literary studies in general, and the interpretation of poetry in particular. I draw comparisons between the book artist and the poet, and suggest that they occupy a similar territory of meaning making. In the course of laying out my arguments in the three chapters, I refer extensively to examples of artists' books in order to make particular points. Where I consider it apt, I draw upon my book art as a source of example. In this way, I am able to weave into the text some information and reflection about my own practice and concerns as a book artist.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar word in die tesis ondersoek ingestel na die hedendaagse praktyk van die boekkuns en in die besonder die wyse waarop dit aansluit by die tradisie van die boek en die tradisie van die kuns. Die tesis beslaan twee volumes. Volume Een bespreek die fenomeen van die kunstenaarsboek vanuit drie invalshoeke: pogings om dit te definieer, pogings om dit te katalogisieer en pogings om dit te interpreteer. Volume Twee is 'n kunstenaarsboek en, hoewel dit deel uitmaak van die projek wat ek ondemeem het, word dit nie voorgele saam met die teoretiese komponent van die MA- dissertasie nie maar as deel van die praktiese komponent. Abstract:

The books and papers offered in this submission are concerned with the history of books and the book trade. Three papers (nos. 1, 2, 3) offer a theoretical and conceptual framework for historical studies of the book. In essence, it is argued that since the book is a societal object it can only be understood in a societal context. Consequently historical studies of books are concerned with far more than physical bibliography, important as that is. The writing, publishing and reading of books are activities which develop out of, and influence the further development of, political and economic systems. The political context of publishing and its legal status is of central concern to the book historian (nos. 12, 14, 15); so too are the mechanisms of sale and distribution (nos. 9, 10, 11, 16) and the relationships between the author who is the primary producer, and the publisher who provides his commercial link with the reader (no. 13). More specifically, the central group of works is concerned with the provincial book trade in 18th-century England. The general study (no. 8) is a wide-ranging survey, largely based on primary sources, of the development and operation of the complex systems which allowed the printed word to permeate English society at every level and in every part of the country between 1700 and 1800. Shorter studies consider some more detailed aspects of the same subject (nos. 4, 6, 7) and survey previous work in the field (no. 5 ).

Abstract:

Throughout the late medieval period, books were an integral part of religious monastic life, and yet such objects have received little attention from an analytical archaeological perspective, despite the significant quantity of metal book fittings recovered from archaeological sites. This thesis explores the archaeological collections held by English Heritage together with published excavation reports, investigating late medieval book fittings, dating between the mid-eleventh and mid-sixteenth centuries, which have been archaeologically recovered from English monastic sites. This work presents the first typology of these artefacts and considers in detail the many and varied forms of late medieval book fittings. In order to contextualise and give a clear understanding of this material, this study investigates late medieval book production, monasticism, and the types of books housed within monasteries and the locations in which they were used and stored. This research goes on to examine the wider social and cultural contexts of book fittings within late medieval monastic society using pictorial and documentary evidence, and extant late medieval bookbindings and library catalogues, in conjunction with the archaeological material. The themes explored include the types of books on which book fittings were used, the influences of different monastic orders, their geographical distribution and the significance of their deposition, particularly as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. By undertaking these methods of investigation, it has become clear that, within the catalogue, different forms of book fittings and styles of decoration were more commonly used in certain regions and by particular monastic orders, and that significant numbers of books were destroyed and their fittings disposed of during the Dissolution in the 1530s both on and away from monastic sites. This research brings together both archaeological and historical approaches to the study of late medieval book fittings, creating an innovative and broad-based study of this particular form of material culture so leading to a new insight into the archaeology of late medieval books.

Abstract:

This study focuses on developing a book arts curriculum as a tool for teaching about creativity and problem solving. The curriculum's ultimate goal is to introduce and emphasize book arts as an expressive and powerful medium to future teachers and artists. Book arts will be used to offer potentialities for collaborative, learner-centered instruction. Students will create structures and artists' books from their experience, their learning will emerge from personal interactions with the structures and artists' books presented. The curriculum is planned into three modules, each module containing a different set of projects and activities organized to scaffold students learning in an engaging process. The modules examine book structures, artists' books, and a project that can either further explore book structures and artists books, or it can explore incorporating some other aspect of book arts in the project. Each module provides a broad range of examples, discussions, questions, and applications.

Abstract:

Visual culture is an integral part of modern life. Books with the engaging visual design still attract children’s attention and are at the center of examples of their experiences and interactions. In children’s books, the image is the central part of perception and the accompanying text plays a secondary role. Visual perception influences and shapes children’s views about what the world around them is like. The book’s illustrations are often the primary criteria when choosing a book for a child, which also creates interest in the written content. By analyzing different illustrations, it is possible to distinguish several main features that are characteristic of depicting a certain emotion and how the characters feel. When looking at any illustration, the character’s facial expression is one of the primary objects looked at to determine how the character is feeling. Appropriate body posture creates the effect of movement alone or helps create the mood of an illustration by complementing the emotional background provided by facial expressions. A true representation of emotions in an illustration not only creates an enjoyable overall image but also clearly shows children how each emotion manifests itself and helps them understand themselves and in the people around them. The aim of the research is to investigate the role of children’s books in their psycho-emotional development and the techniques of depicting emotions in book illustrations. Research methods: theorethical – research of literature and Internet resources; case study. Research results – the importance of children’s book illustrations in children’s psycho-emotional development is substantiated, and the types of representation of various emotional expressions are determined. The case study confirms that not in all cases artists have paid attention to facial mimicry, which is the most active part of a person for the expression of emotions.

Over the years, the book, as an object of spirit, has always been elevated to the rank of symbol, metaphor or even archetype. All these concepts about the book challenged many scientists, people of art and culture, including documentary filmmakers. In the cinematic discourse, thanks to its important components (image, soundtrack), the book obtains spatial dimensions, but also sound – a process, which deepens the ideational background, facilitates the assimilation and valorization of the book’s content. The film “The Light of the Book” (screenplay by Nicolae Dabija and Pavel Bălan, directed by Mircea Chistrugă, image by P. Bălan) about the fate, often dramatic, of many old books, and the film “Anastasie Crimca” (author Pavel Bălan), dedicated to the famous calligrapher and book miniaturist, Metropolitan Anastasie Crimca, will serve as arguments for these ideas. Thus, we will try to demonstrate the possibilities of documentary film in “bringing” home our old books, scattered for various reasons around the world, and their valorization as an important component of the spiritual heritage of the nation.

The methods in which e-books can be purchased vary greatly compared to print books. In the past, a print book was purchased either as an individual title (firm order) or through an approval plan. Once the books were received, there was little deviation in how the items were processed – purchase orders were created, books were processed, invoices were input and paid. However, with e-books, the work is more complex and there are a many ways to purchase e-books – firm order, Demand (or Patron) Driven Acquisiton (DDA), Evidence Based Acquisition (EBA), yearly front-file purchases, back-file purchases, or subscription to e-book packages. Each of the methods involves a workflow that goes from easy to somewhat complex. This begs the question of whether the acquisitions workflow can or should influence how e-books are purchased.

Annotation: „Tabula rasa” – the theory of the philosopher John Loke represents the man without a book. The importance of the book in the formation of personality is demonstrated by the countless prohibitions of books throughout human history – „blacklists” of forbidden books and burned books. Hence the rhetorical question: – „What is your first book?”, „What books were in your training?”. The book is the source of knowledge that can be passed on to other generations contributing to their formation. Good governance can only be achieved based on qualitative knowledge. The need for elite education has been realized since antiquity. Thus in all societies, the formula of creating special schools for the children of kings and aristocrats was used. The Party High School was created in the Soviet Union for Party Officials because good governance equals the higher level of idealization of the official. Cultural and scientific elites have a role in defending national culture and merit in universal science. The book is an artifact in the demonstration of the existence of a people, and the people who will not have written books will remain out of history.

Both diffraction gratings and optical interference coatings are used in a wide range of applications. While the basic theory of thin-film optics is well covered in many optics text books and many books on the design, fabrication and application of optical coatings have been published, the treatment of diffraction gratings in optics text books goes little beyond presenting the grating and to date only three books on diffraction gratings have been published. The book edited by Petit1 describes the electromagnetic theory of gratings. The book by Hutley2 concentrates on the physics of gratings. Complementing the above two, the recently published book by Loewen and Popov3 aims at the applications of gratings. In addition, a volume in SPIE’s milestone series, edited by Maystre4, contains many important papers in all aspects of gratings up to 1992.

Abstract:

The authors examine attitudes of students of teacher-training faculties and faculties of education (N = 394) from four countries of the Western Balkans on (a) advantages and (b) limitations of using e-books and (c) on the perspective of using different forms of books in changed social context. Results of the research show that students value practical aspect of using an e-book the most, including among its most significant advantages the availability and the possiblity to store a large number of books on one device, while the most important limitations are lack of smell and sound when turning pages as well as reader fatigue. Future teachers and nursery teachers agree that printed book will always have its place among readers, regardless of the progress of modern technology, and that after the pandemic, most people will return to printed book. On the other hand, their views are not harmonized when assessing the complete dominance of e-book over the printed one, sometime in the future. Although today’s students grew up in a digital information environment, their attitudes regarding the use of e-books imply that they can critically assess place and role of different forms of books in the process of creating a productive learning environment.

The article discussed the usage of augmented reality books in educational process. The object of research is augmented reality books. The methods of research are: the analysis of publications about the issue; the analysis of digital tools capabilities; systematization and generalization of research information. In the article the facet classification for augmented books is proposed; the main facets are: reality- virtuality continuum, type of augmented materials, device types, type of interaction, spatial space of book, book’s category. Content for a module of a specialty course about augmented reality books for the system of professional training and retraining for educators in postgraduate education is discussed. Some samples of tasks for educators are presented: audio augmented book about world’s books monuments; analysis augmented reality examples in the textbook of the New Ukrainian school (subject name, topic, didactic tasks, quality of implementation, directions of expansion etc.), search and analysis augmented books according to the professional interests of the educators; discussion how augmented reality can help to improve student motivation with accent to attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction; group work about design and creation a fragment of own textbook with augmented reality.
