Three studies were conducted to determine a consensual list of psychology's great books. In the first study, 39 colleges described the composition of their undergraduate Great Books (GBs) curricula. Fifty-six percent of the 39 colleges assigned some psychology-related materials, but these materials accounted for only 4% of all readings. In the second study, 186 psychologists nominated 463 books as psychology's GBs. In the third study, 83 APA division presidents and 117 Division Two fellows rated the books and authors most frequently nominated in the second study in terms of those that undergra

Publishing is often characterized by instinctive decision-making with little attempt to apply a scientific methodology to an obvious question: why does one book sell and another not? The thesis of this paper is that, although there are aspects of a book’s publication history that one cannot predict in advance, one can know what these aspects are. A simple syllogism underlies the argument: if human behaviour can be understood through psychology and if book-buying is a form of behaviour, the motivations for book-buying can also be understood through psychology. This approach can be applied histo

Finally, the author shares some personal insights as a clinical psychologist, from the work involved in co-editing the three books.

Background: Depression is an extremely common mental health disorder, with prevalence rates rising. Low-intensity interventions are frequently used to help meet the demand for treatment. Bibliotherapy, for example, is often prescribed via books on prescription schemes (for example ‘Reading Well’ in England) to those with mild to moderate symptomology. Bibliotherapy can effectively reduce symptoms of depression (Naylor et al., 2010). However, the majority of self-help books are based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which may not be suitable for all patients. Research supports the use of
