Givens, Cherie Lynn. "An exploration of pre-censorship of children's books : perceptions and experiences of canadian authors and illustrators." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24152.

Full text
Abstract:
There is little documentation of pre-censorship of children’s literature. The discussion of pre-censorship is often submerged within more general censorship discussions and not specifically identified. It is addressed in snippets of information revealed in interviews and responses to questionnaires concerning censorship. This study was designed to examine in detail the phenomenon of pre-censorship as experienced by Canadian children’s and young adult authors and illustrators. A qualitative, naturalistic methodology was selected to explore participants’ experiences through in-depth interviews with open-ended questions designed to encourage participants to speak at length and share thoughts, feelings, and insights. Seventeen Canadian authors and illustrators, who self-identified as having experienced pre-censorship, participated in this study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with all but one of the participants, whose interview was conducted by telephone and a follow-up in-person meeting. Most participants requested confidentiality, wishing to keep their names and the titles of the books undisclosed. Participants provided concrete examples of they experienced pre-censorship. Types of pre-censorship were identified. Reasons given for pre-censorship make clear that marketing and sales concerns as well as a fear of censorship after publication are dominant motivating factors. The incidents of pre-censorship discussed can be distilled down to several common threads that help to identify the essence of the experience. The main criterion that separates participants’ pre-censorship experiences from normal or acceptable editing is the feeling of loss of intellectual freedom or freedom of expression in having to make the changes. Almost all of the participants now self-censor in anticipation of censorship. When participants’ experiences are compared to documented instances of pre-censorship of children’s and young adult authors in the U.K. and U.S., similarities can be seen in certain types of pre-censorship and self-censorship. Further investigation is needed to determine if there are certain types of pre-censorship that are common to countries such as Canada and the U.S. that share a similar culture and language, and if so where do they originate. Further investigation is also needed to determine whether Canadian children’s and young adult books are being Americanized at the cost of Canadian culture or simply evolving into a more global literature.

Fulton, Bruce. "Social Gatekeeping, the Serendipitous Tie and Discovery: Authors Connecting Readers to Books through Social Media Outreach." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/301549.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2011, over 1.5 million new book titles were published in the United States, a 400% increase in just five years compared to 2006. In the same time period, the market share for eBooks increased dramatically and now comprises 20% or more of sales from many of the biggest publishing companies. This hyper-abundance of titles in an increasingly heterogeneous market place has made it difficult for consumers to connect to books they might want to read. This is the discovery problem. It is compounded by the continuing decline of traditional gatekeepers and sources of discovery such as mass media reviews and advertising, as well as the decline of traditional bookstores where people often find books through browse. Authors and publishers therefore have turned to social media to spread the word about their titles. Social gatekeeping, an extension of traditional gatekeeping theory, is proposed as the framework for understanding how author participation in social networks initiates a flow of the diffusion of information over the web and other computer mediated communication channels, and through individuals and social networks to potential readers. Serendipitous browse and discovery is a key strategy for readers to find titles of interest, and the serendipitous tie is proposed as a social mechanism through which individuals discover new titles and bring it back to their social networks to share. To explore these concepts, a random sample of new eBook titles published during the first week of April, 2012 was generated and analyzed in three phases. The first phase of research classified books and authors according to facets such as traditional or self-published, use of social media and other factors. The second phase used multiple regression to establish an association between the use of social media by authors and a title's sales and presence on the Web. The third phase reviewed selected titles for new approaches to social media use and evidence of the serendipitous tie. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that author web presence predicts discoverability and sales.

Thomlison, Adam. "Digital Self-publishing as Planned Behaviour: Authors' Views on E-book Adoption." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32512.

Full text
Abstract:
A popular school of thought in the study of publishing, exemplified by the influential Long Tail theory, suggests that the economic advantages of e-books will lead to a boom in self-publishing. However, this position focuses on economic factors at the expense of other potential influences. This thesis applied Azjen's (1991) Theory of Planned Behaviour to explore which factors have the most influence on authors' decision to self-publish e-books, and, conversely, which factors influence others' decision not to. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 11 authors in the Ottawa area who have self-published or who are considering doing so in the near future. We discovered that there is significant resistance to e-books as a format for self-publishing, and that normative factors such as a lack of prestige and different promotional requirements were particularly influential. While e-books were seen to reduce economic risk, they were believed to be a less prestigious format, and so to represent an elevated risk to what Bourdieu called symbolic-capital. Some authors were also resistant because they felt unable to promote e-books in the way they are expected to. However, most said they would be willing to abandon their resistance if they perceived sufficient demand from their audience. These results open up paths for future study, including more focused examinations of the resistance factors that emerged; more longitudinal studies to see how authors' opinions change over time, particularly those of the non-adopters; and a further examination of the digital skills developed by adopters.

Enning, Tang. "Can spectators become co-authors in the process of a story narrative." AUT University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10292/819.

Full text
Abstract:
This project explores the areas of human perception and story narrative in moving images. Engaged by the research question, “Can spectators become co-authors in the process of a story narrative?”, the research focuses on exploring the co-existence and contradiction between the values of spectators and an author in a process of a narrative by developing a new potential narrative approach with multiple perspectives. I hypothesise that spectators could participate with the story narrative process as co-authors. My key method is to engage with spectators’ participation within a narration (story) by displaying story fragments across multiple screens simultaneously. The potential of having a story spread across multiple screens might bring further interest to authors to re-think the notion of a spectator and tell a story with multiple perspectives in a narrative process with spectators. In order to develop this project, I will use different approaches, such as Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1998), Data Visualisation (Tufte, 1983), Action Research (Kemmis & McTaggart, 1988) and Heuristics (Moustakas, 1990), which I will explain in further details in each chapter of my exegesis.

Brown, Diane. "Publishing Culture : Commissioning Books in Australia, 1970-2000." Connect to this title online, 2003. http://eprints.vu.edu.au/304/1/Brown_Diane.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This study primarily examines the cultural and commercial practices of editors and publishers who commission and acquire content in independent Australian publishing houses. My research spans a 30-year transitional period in book publishing from 1970 to 2000 - a period marked by rapid and unstable shifts in publishing culture, reflecting wider social, political, economic and technological change. In a global market economy, more than ever before, the acquisition of local content is critical in fostering original ideas and works by Australian authors. A series of semi-structured interviews with editors and publishers provides a direct source of personal experience and professional industry-based knowledge. These narratives address and engage with individual and collective values, beliefs, assumptions and attitudes which reflect particular personalities and publishing styles. They also contribute to an understanding of the editors' and publishers' commissioning role, where knowledge and content are taken up and developed and publishing decisions are made. An analysis of editors' and publishers' responses further explores the diversity of commissioning and acquisitions environments in which they live and work. Publishing houses are profiled and works of fiction and non-fiction are identified and discussed in an attempt to unpack how and why they were commissioned and developed for publication, and to what social and cultural effect. The dynamics of organisational structure and publishing culture are explored by analysing general and specific publishing models. Editors and publishers discuss how publishing companies operate and offer insights into, and perceptions of, organisational structure and publishing culture and, importantly, how both impact on commissioning practice. Issues of identity, representation and institutionalisation are identified as they relate to developments and trends within publishing and public culture, as a whole, and the ways in which they intersect. This nexus of culture and power is explored through the cultural production of Australian content, and in particular, in Chapters Five and Six, with the impact of second-wave feminism on Australian publishing culture and cross-currents in the production and publication of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works.

Haley, Jennifer M. "Encomium, agency, and subversion : the feminist recovery of baby books as women's domestic rhetoric." Virtual Press, 2007. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1370879.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation I conduct a feminist recovery of the baby book as one kind of ordinary women's domestic rhetoric. I analyze the ways in which the baby book's evolution reflects changes in cultural practices over time and the means by which the baby book constitutes acts of potentially subversive agency in its power to resist patriarchal structuring. I classify the baby book within the ancient rhetorical genre of encomium, allowing us to perceive how a culture, situated in time and place, values the perception and presentation of an infant and the culturally-assigned role of the mother in the formation of that presentation. The genre of encomium must be redefined as an ongoing, dynamic, adaptive genre.I conduct an interpretation of more than the mere artifact, but of the production and experience of that artifact as well. Thus, this study establishes a unique and significant role for a de-reading methodology as a viable introduction and theoretical foundation to approaching domestic texts, involving self figuration on the part of the researcher and an empathic approach to reading that privileges a loving, appreciative standpoint. My analysis of over fifty baby books from 1885 through 2007 reveals that the role of the baby books and the role of the mother are assigned, to a great extent, by the definition of "family" and shaped by socioeconomic forces. Mothers subvert or comply with the directives from the publishers, thereby implying rejection of or compliance with the maternal script through such strategies as appropriation of space, inclusion of artifacts, and omission. This discovery expands our notion of agency in terms of the power of form, the role of the audience, and the connections to material and symbolic cultural context. My research establishes a line of inquiry into the material practices of production and simultaneously brings into view an array of texts that have been outside the conventional purview of rhetorical scholarship. For those who want to recover women's rhetoric and to extend an understanding of rhetorical praxis, baby books are a valuable primary and, until now, untapped source, as well as a "new" type of rhetorical evidence.<br>Department of English

Abstract:
As the the amount of books available online the sizes of each these collections are at the same pace growing larger and more commonly in multiple languages. Many of these cor- pora contain duplicates in form of various editions or translations of books. The task of finding these duplicates is usually done manually but with the growing sizes making it time consuming and demanding. The thesis set out to find a method in the field of Text Mining and Natural Language Processing that can automatize the process of manually identifying these duplicates in a corpora mainly consisting of fiction in multiple languages provided by Storytel. The problem was approached using three different methods to compute distance measures between books. The first approach was comparing titles of the books using the Levenstein- distance. The second approach used extracting entities from each book using Named En- tity Recognition and represented them using tf-idf and cosine dissimilarity to compute distances. The third approach was using a Polylingual Topic Model to estimate the books distribution of topics and compare them using Jensen Shannon Distance. In order to es- timate the parameters of the Polylingual Topic Model 8000 books were translated from Swedish to English using Apache Joshua a statistical machine translation system. For each method every book written by an author was pairwise tested using a hypothesis test where the null hypothesis was that the two books compared is not an edition or translation of the others. Since there is no known distribution to assume as the null distribution for each book a null distribution was estimated using distance measures of books not written by the author. The methods were evaluated on two different sets of manually labeled data made by the author of the thesis. One randomly sampled using one-stage cluster sampling and one consisting of books from authors that the corpus provider prior to the thesis be considered more difficult to label using automated techniques. Of the three methods the Title Matching was the method that performed best in terms of accuracy and precision based of the sampled data. The entity matching approach was the method with the lowest accuracy and precision but with a almost constant recall at around 50 %. It was concluded that there seems to be a set of duplicates that are clearly distin- guished from the estimated null-distributions, with a higher significance level a better pre- cision and accuracy could have been made with a similar recall for the specific method. For topic matching the result was worse than the title matching and when studied the es- timated model was not able to create quality topics the cause of multiple factors. It was concluded that further research is needed for the topic matching approach. None of the three methods were deemed be complete solutions to automatize detection of book duplicates.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous studies on Cecily von Ziegesar's series Gossip Girl fail to explain the functionality of the series for the actual readers. Therefore, a discussion of the relationship between reader and text is necessary. By explaining from a literary perspective how reader and text interact, we can better understand why teen girls want to read the series and the exchanges that occur between the books and the readers. An exploration of how Gossip Girl relates to its series predecessors, like Nancy Drew, demonstrates how the popularity of Gossip Girl is not unique, but rather fits in with the established series pattern while receiving the same harsh criticism. As a result of analyzing the "bad" reputation Gossip Girl has earned, we can explicate how the series is currently seen to operate for the reader, questions left open when simply looking at series books historically. This exploration of the books as carriers of ideology examines how and if readers are invited to participate in a relationship with the text. However, simple reader-response theories only replicate a static relationship between reader and text. By also using a Deleuzo-Guattarian approach to the series, an understanding of how Gossip Girl acts as an "apparatus of capture" built on social conditions while still allowing the reader minimal agency for the channeling of energy/desiring flows can be found. These approaches work in conjunction in order to address the engagement readers experience with the Gossip Girl texts, which, in turn, help elucidate the phenomenon associated with von Ziegesar's books.<br>Master of Arts

Stone, Heather Brenda. "Companionable forms : writers, readers, sociability, and the circulation of literature in manuscript and print in the Romantic period." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2015. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:63f652fc-c4c2-4c3a-bc5c-893d4b922db1.

Full text
Abstract:
Following recent critical work on writers' representations of sociability in Romantic literature, this thesis examines in detail the textual strategies (such as allusion, acts of address, and the use of 'coterie' symbols or references) which writers used to seek to establish a friendly or sympathetic relationship with a particular reader or readers, or to create and define a sense of community identity between readers. The thesis focuses on specific relationships between pairs and groups of writers (who form one another's first readers), and examines 'sociable' genres like letters, manuscript albums, occasional poetry, and periodical essays in a diverse series of author case-studies (Anna Barbauld, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Charles Lamb, John Keats and Leigh Hunt). Such genres, the thesis argues, show how manuscript and print culture could frequently overlap and intersect, meaning that writers confronted the demands of two co-existing audiences - one private and familiar, the other public and unknown - in the same work. Rather than arguing that writers used manuscript culture practices and produced 'coterie' works purely to avoid confronting their anxieties about publishing in the commercial sphere of print culture, the thesis suggests that in producing such 'coterie' works writers engaged with and reflected contemporary philosophical and political concerns about the relationship between the individual and wider communities. In these works, writers engaged with the legacy of eighteenth-century philosophical ideas about the role (and limitations) of the sympathetic imagination in maintaining social communities, and with interpretative theories about the best kind of reader. Furthermore, the thesis argues that reading literary texts in the specific, material context in which they are 'published' to particular readers, either in print, manuscript, or letters, is vital to understanding writer/reader relationships in the Romantic period. This approach reveals how within each publication space, individual texts could be placed (either by their writers, by editors, or by other readers) in meaningful relationships with other texts, absorbing or appropriating them into new interpretative contexts.

There are many different doorways into the world of book publishing and it can be challenging, but there are choices that can make it easier. Aspiring publishers often have a hard time breaking into this world because they have no guide. This thesis will be a guide to traversing the different avenues into the world of publishing. Prospective publishers, editors, and writers will be provided with a landscape of what it’s like to work in book publishing. It will also cover the two different ways that people become publishers, an overview of the basic requirements that publishing houses look for in potential employees, and the basic process of what publishers do.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the book trailer as a phenomenon and method of marketing. Similarities between the book trailer, the book cover and the movie trailer are examined to show how a "typical" book trailer looks and what functions it possibly has. The paper also explores the book trailer’s prospects of reaching different audiences in different age groups. It also points to difficulties in defining an audience. Young adult literature and the fantasy genre are linked to the book trailer and examples are given on how authors and publishers can establish relationships with readers through the Internet. General guidelines are given for what should be considered to appeal to as many potential readers as possible when a book trailer is being used or designed. The book trailer's ability to reach young, reluctant readers, who have given up on reading to the benefit of image based storytelling like movies and computer games, are explored. The conclusion highlights the advantages of promoting books with audio and video.</p>

Abstract:
碩士<br>東海大學<br>中國文學系<br>97<br>Female authors of children’s books often have to take care of their families when writing. Therefore, greater perseverance and patience are required. Women have to pay more to achieve the same accomplishments. Women began to have a power in life, writing and publication. In the development of children’s literature in Taiwan, female authors had a great number of works from 1960 to 1979. The paper arranges the data of twenty-one female authors in Taiwan in the hope to supplement historical data of children’s literature and reviews the children’s books then in the hope to the female authors’ ideas in writing and types of material selection to explore articles’ border-crossing and permeation as well as theme styles and atmosphere of the era. The paper is divided into six chapters. The first one, Introduction, explains the study motive, reviews achievements of earlier researchers and explains study methods and purposes. The second, Female Authors of Children’s Books from 1960 to 1979, illustrates authors’ life, composition identities, and writing of children’s books in the hope to understand writing environment back then in Taiwan. Chapter III, Text, is divided into family and school life, memories of childhood and feelings of the hometown, stories in the past and folk legends, notes in life and encouragement in growth. The four dimensions explore writing of essays and life stories. The fourth, Wings of Imagination, discusses writing of children’s books to understand implicit life in works, fun of folk legends and imagination stories and experience love and friendship in animal stories. From the stories by foreign authors, it is found that female authors also did transportation in addition to writing. Chapter V contains singing of children’s songs, reading of children’s poems to explore children s’ songs and poems by earlier female authors in Taiwan who enriched composition of the categories with fairy tales and essays into poems. Chapter VI is Conclusions. In addition to identifying with literature values of earlier female authors of children’s books in Taiwan, the paper also attempts to establish the writing history. These authors developed earlier children’ literature theory. Cross-border and transformation of permeation can be seen the literature category. Children’s books are for children and they often contain implicit education theme. Works then were in simple texts and single statements. They were the results of female authors from their hearts. Such works to be blueprint of education of language for children now will be of profound meaning.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立政治大學<br>圖書資訊與檔案學研究所<br>104<br>The Newbery Award was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Based on bibliometrics, this study explores the genres, subjects and author’s backgrounds of Newbery winners and honor books from 1922 to 2015. The study also collects bibliographic records retrieved mainly from NBINet and CALIS databases for the purpose of investigating overall publishing status of their Chinese translations. The results are summarized as follows. First, with regards to the authors’ backgrounds, it is observed that: (1)Among the 279 authors, those born in USA comprise the largest number. New York is the most common birthplace for these USA born authors. Moreover, female authors account for twice the number of male authors. Furthermore, the average life expectancy for the authors is 78.3 years; (2)The majority of these authors received the award between 30 and 59 years of age; (3)Most of the authors were awarded only once. Meindert DeJong and Laura Ingalls Wilder, having been awarded 5 times, hold the record for the most Newberys won. Second, with regards to the distribution of the genres and themes of these works, it is observed that: (1)In terms of genre, the majority of the works fall under fiction and nonfiction novels, biography and short story; (2)The subject of these works mostly center around history, realism and adventure. Third, regarding the publishing status of these works’ Chinese translations, it is observed that: (1)Chinese translations are available for 54 percent of the works. The first Chinese translation was “Ren Lei De Gu Shi” published by Shanghai Commercial Press in 1925, which was translated from "The Story of Mankind" by Shen Xing-Ren; (2)The works with the largest number of Chinese publishing houses, Chinese translators and Chinese titles are "The Story of Mankind", “The Story of Mankind" and "The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle" respectively; (3)The numbers of Chinese publishing houses, translators and Chinese titles of a book are highly correlated; (4)In terms of the average time interval between the publication of English original works and Chinese translations, it took an average of 17.95 years for a Traditional Chinese translation to be published, while a Simplified Chinese translation usually took 27.83 years; (5)The number of Traditional Chinese publishers is 72, with the major publishers being Wisdom World Publishing and Eastern Publishing Co.. The number of Simplified Chinese publishers is 108; major publishers include New Buds Publishing House, China Children Publishing House and Hebei Education Press; (6)There are 437 group of translators, among which ZhaoYong-Fen, Zou Jia-Rong and Zhao Ying-Xue are the main translators; (7)From the standpoint of genre, Chinese publishing houses prefer to publish translations for fiction and nonfiction novels, while nonfiction depiction of facts and works based on folk legends are less favored; from the perspective of subjects, Chinese publishing houses favor realism and works with animal-related, whereas works based on mythologies receive least attention from publishers.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>社會與文化研究所<br>97<br>ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to study three authors of the best-selling books of cosmetology in current Taiwan: Shih Chi-Ching, Niu Er, Yi Neng-Ching. I attempt to argue against the former critique, which holds a negative attitude toward cosmetology. My argument is to reflect the fact that when Taiwan entered the age of postmodern consumption, people’s attitude toward beauty has undergone a tremendous change among generations. I borrow Ning Ying-Pin’s idea that “making your body means being yourself.” However, this idea is represented in three different attitudes by the three authors: Shih Chi-Ching has “ego-defense function”, Niou Er has “knowledge function”, and Yi Neng-Ching has “value expressive function”. Their different attitudes toward cosmetology, in my argument, have revealed their political demands and aesthetic experiences, thus forming a linear spectrum--from politics to aesthetics. Abstract:
This thesis examines the development of artist's books and other similar mass- produced art works in the codex form. More specifically, the object of investigation in this thesis focuses on the position of such art works as democratic multiples. This development is traced through three case studies on the works of Edward Ruscha (b.1937), the artist collective General Idea (1969-1995), and Matthew Barney (b.1967). The thesis argues that though artist's books are often characterized as being polemical towards capitalist production, these bookworks achieve their most democratic results when making use of the techniques of the capitalist market, rather than working against it.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺南大學<br>教育學系課程與教學(澎湖)碩士班<br>95<br>The purpose of this action research was to explore how to apply Multiple Intelligences Theory (MI) to teaching with picture books to fourth graders in Chung-Hsing Elementary School. By putting the theory into practice, the researcher carried out an action research both to improve the teaching ability and enhance personal expertise, and to investigate students’ performance in the process of MI Theory-applied teaching with picture books, students’ attitude change toward reading before and after the instruction, difficulties the researcher encountered and solutions she came up with during the instruction The subjects in this study were a fourth grade class in the researcher’s school. The researcher designed MI Theory-applied lesson plans of five picture books. The total instruction lasted for ten weeks, two to three periods per week, and forty minutes per period. The data were collected through classroom observation, researcher’s reflections, students’ worksheets, interviews, multiple intelligences checklist, and reading attitude questionnaires. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Teaching activities are more varied when teachers apply MI Theory to teaching with picture books. 2. It is feasible to apply MI Theory to teaching with picture books. 3. MI Theory-applied teaching with picture books is highly accepted by students. They all hope teachers can continue this way of teaching. 4. MI Theory-applied teaching with picture books can arouse students’ interest in reading. Their performance 5. Most students showed their strength, and their weakness was strengthened through cooperative learning. 6. Difficulties and solutions of MI Theory-applied teaching with picture books. (1) Lesson plans have to be adequately altered according to the real situation in teaching scene. (2) The instruction can go with the school’s schedule and be carried out within a flexible curriculum in order to solve the problem of insufficient time. (3) Lack of teaching materials can be solved by computer technology. 7. The researcher and the co-teacher have gained confidence and expertise throughout the research, have learned to use various teaching and assessment methods, and have been fully aware that a teacher is a learner as well as a leader.

Huang, Ya-yun, and 黃雅雲. "Multiple vocies of the connection problems of different editions of elementary school text books." Thesis, 2008. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/fa4sc6.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>教育研究所<br>96<br>This study aims to investigate various and multiple viewpoints of scholars, textbook editors, elementary school teachers, and student parents on the connection issue between different editions of elementary school textbooks, so as to submit our conclusions and suggestions. The concrete purpose of this study is double: a) What are the multiple voices of the connection issue of different textbooks? b) How are these voices formed? In order to reach the above purpose, the research method is mainly qualitative method, complementing by quantitative method. The study subjects are three scholars, three editors of school textbooks, 18 elementary school teachers, and five student parents. We adopt interview method of qualitative research. According to the introductory interviews, the researchers compile preliminary questionnaire, which is distributed to 160 elementary school teachers in all the 16 counties and cities in the Taiwan area. The last open-end question allows the answerers to write down their opinions, which are then used as one part of data analysis of this study. Finally, we conduct our analysis and discussion by means of incessant comparative analysis and type analysis. Synthetically, we then produce the conclusions and suggestions of this study. The following are the conclusions we reached: 1. The connection between the formal outlines and the temporary ones of the nine-year-through consistent policy causes various connection problems of different editions years ago. Take math course for example. This course is being narrowed and regulated owing to the formal outlines'' annual details, which, though brings out a converging agreement, still causes some connection problems, though fewer. Even though connection problems remain, teachers should manage to reduce the problems to the minimum when conducting their teachings, so as to make the teachings more favorably. 2. Because of poor understanding towards the present nine-year-through consistent policy curricula outlines, elementary school teachers can not explain the connection problems to the student parents clearly, which makes the latter take dubious stance towards this issue. The nature of elementary school curricula is of the class of starting point of Burner''s spiral curriculum; furthermore, the teaching units are circular through the six years. Thus, the negligent and omitting elements can be redressed to some point. On the other hand, whether students'' learning contents are negligent or not will be redressed by the "feedback loop" to rectify the teaching objects and complement the teaching materials. 3. Elementary school teachers with teaching experience less than five years are mostly inexperienced teachers who don''t understand the curricula outlines. From our interviews we realize that all kinds of selection tests almost never touch issues concerning curricula outlines. Under this vein, the chance to understand the curricula outlines is relatively meager, which is a warning and chasm for elementary teaching staff cultivation curricula. 4. The connection problems of different elementary textbook editions have something to do with the natures of curricula or fields. Curricula of artistic ability have less connection, which might have something to do with having no tests. "Having tests" tops all the connection issues of different elementary school textbooks. 5. The connection issues of different elementary school textbooks manifest the loose joining of "theory and practice" of teaching, which is the chief cause of the long-term negligence of the outcry of elementary school teachers who really do the teachings. On the one hand, the low professional status and image of elementary school teachers partly contribute to the above phenomenon. On the other hand, many elementary school teachers hold the belief that politics is behind education. In the long run, they feel inactive to all the educational issues. 6. Transfer students have to face horizontal transfer of different editions of their textbooks. Various levels of transfer problems occur because of different transfer times during the semester. But connection problems are not unsolvable. The joint cooperation between elementary school teachers and the publishers of elementary school textbooks still can patch up the chasm of connection.

Abstract:
博士<br>國立臺北教育大學<br>教育經營與管理學系<br>101<br>Our research primarily focuses on the Concerns-based Adoption Model applications for one-guideline-multiple selection of text books in Taoyuan County which was carried out by studying the private and public junior high school teachers (including administrators), who tend to select the text books for the strategy of Stage of Concern and the degree of Level of Use. Moreover, we also considered different personal factors and the status of teachers’ concern in school. According to the results, we propose suggestions which can be used by the educational authorities. Our study is based on Concerns-based Adoption Model, and the questionnaire survey is designed on “the selection of text books with “new” concept in Taoyuan County”. Total 616 subjects including school principal, director of academic affairs, chief of curriculum and teachers with various learning areas (Chinese, English, Mathematics, Science and Nature Technology) were investigated in public senior schools in Taoyuan County, and as stated above members, we chose 17 people for semistructured Interviews. In our research, after examining several references, we established the frame of theory by research model. Finally, all the results were analyzed statistically by t-test and one-way ANOVA as follows: I. Basic theory: i. One-guideline-multiple selection of text books fits in with various, free, and democratic philosophy of education, and keeps the tendency towards selection of text books in other countries. ii.The policy on one-guideline-multiple selection of text books generates several problems to influence other authorities on selection of text books in different counties. iii.Concerns-based Adoption Model is available for teachers on professional development and organizational change. iv.The selection of text books with “new” concept in Taoyuan County is reasonable. v. Discussions on applications of Concerns-based Adoption Model. II. Investigation i. Questionnaire survey 1. Stage of Concern (1)All teachers focused on “Personal”, “Management”, and “Information”. (2)For “Consequence” and “Collaboration”, the male teachers were higher in number compared to the female teachers. (3) With age the degree of concern increases. (4) For educational qualification on “Information” and “Management”, the degree of concern is higher with higher educational qualification. (5)For different experiences on “Awareness” and “Information”, the experience is higher (above 21 years), the degree of concern is higher. (6)Taking up various positions ( school principal, director of academic affairs, chief of curriculum or teacher) on “Awareness” of stage of Concern is higher than other stages. (7)For stage of “Information” and “refocusing”, 25 to 48 classes in school, the stage of concern is higher than other stages. 2. Level of Concern (1)All teacher focused on “Task concerns”. (2)For “Self concerns”, “Task concerns” and “Impact concerns”, the degree of concern increases with age. (3)For “Self concerns”, “Task concerns”, there is higher concern on the higher educational qualification and taking up the position of director of academic affairs in 96 years of study . (4) For “Self concerns”, there is lower concern on working experience of 6 to 10 years. (5) For “Self concerns”, there is higher concern on taking up the position of director of academic affairs and school principal. (6) For “Impact concerns”, there is higher concern on 25 to 48 classes in school. ii.On the interview study, there are significance on “Routine”, “Refinement”, “Integration”, and “Renewal” for Level of Use. According to above conclusions, our research proposes several suggestions as follows: I. Suggestion for educational implementation plan i. It can improve stakeholders’ concerns by CBAM application on educational implementation plan. ii.When CBAM is adopted on educational policies, there is significance in schools within 25 to 48 classes. iii.It can become a reference for 12-year-basic-educationan policy. II. Definite plan of educational implementation plan i. Local educational authority, school principals or leaders should concern the stakeholders’ opinions and understand their requirements in promoting the educational policies by CBAM. ii.It is necessary to greatly announce educational policies on female teachers so that they can improve their concentrations on its policies. iii.The school should encourage the teachers who work more than 21 years to become the main force or key persons in in promoting the educational policies. iv.It is necessary to establish the educational policy platform and it can enhance stakeholders highly concern the importance of progression of educational policies. III. Suggestion for teaching i.Enhance democratic literacy in class, and improve space for democratic dialogues and rational debates. ii.In order to establish the high quality of teaching atmosphere, administrative staffs should make teachers understand that the administration can assist them in teaching activities. IV. Suggestion for future i. Study area 1. The research objects can extend to every junior high school in different counties. 2. The research items can focus on other items in details. ii.After supplying more field researches on our methods, it can be adopted that the research can take the innovation configuration as a tool to measure the teachers’ concerns.
