Abstract:
This chapter discusses theatre-building in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s. The 1970s has often been characterized as a period of economic and political crisis in British history in which the welfare state project was challenged. Yet theatre-building continued throughout the decade: in Scotland the late 1970s saw significant progress in several key projects. The chapter discusses the extent to which contextualism and economy were significant themes in the conception and design of such examples as Bristol Theatre Royal’s studio, Eden Court (Inverness), Pitlochry Festival Theatre, and Dundee Repertory Theatre. It also continues the narrative into the 1980s, showing how the likes of Plymouth Theatre Royal and the West Yorkshire Playhouse represent an evolution of ideas established during the previous two decades. The chapter concludes by aligning the history of theatre architecture in these decades with a recent trend to advance more positive narratives of their history generally.

Abstract:
The year 2013 saw the thirtieth Edinburgh International Book Festival (EIBF), where it was expected that 200,000 people would be in attendance over the course of 17 days for some 700 events involving ‘[m]ore than 800 authors from around the world’ (BBC, 2013). Despite its size, the festival, set in Charlotte Square Gardens, manages to feel like a tented village community. Children laugh and loll about on a low wooden dais, eating ice cream from the stall inside the gardens, their parents sitting beside them. This study draws from ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2011 and 2013 and focuses on Edinburgh, where comparatively little research on Muslims has so far been undertaken. In doing so, it explore the representation of Islam within the confines of one of Britain’s most widely acclaimed literary festivals, the EIBF. It begins by examining the festival as a public square. It then discusses the festival’s production of an ‘Islamicate’ space. Finally, it analyses how the festival may be conceived as a representation of Islamicate space.

Abstract:
The book concludes with an epilogue entitled ‘The Return of Dionysus. From Festive Performances to Global Spectacle’. It very briefly retraces the exchange of productions of Greek tragedies between Germany and other countries and ends with the role played by productions of Greek tragedies today, at German as well as international theatre festivals, thus linking them back to the most important festival in ancient Athens, the Great Dionysia. After explaining how such festivals in Germany reassert the central position held by theatre in German culture, the epilogue ends with a short discussion of Jan Fabre’s twenty-four-hour performance Mount Olympus—to Glorify the Cult of Tragedy (Berliner Festspiele, June 2015) as an allegory of and a reflection on Greek tragedy’s endurance on the German stage.

Abstract:
The chapter summarizes key themes and presents some final thoughts. The aim of this book was to analyze the parodied racial identities—“whites,” “blacks,” and “Indians”—performed in the Afro-Esmeraldian Festival of the Kings. The fundamental theoretical premise has been that festivities are nonstatic texts that are always embedded in ever-changing or evolving sociocultural, economic, and political realities. It illustrated and emphasized that basic fact, valid for any festive reality, by looking at the Festival as it has been performed in two different contexts within one single cultural area (the province of Esmeraldas): the villages of La Tola and Santo Domingo de Ónzole. The book proposed to re-locate the Festival's “texts” within the webs of social relations and social practices that constitute its “contexts.” In doing so, it underscored the importance of “place” and “space” for the study of festivities in general, and of carnivalesque festivities in particular.
