Abstract:
The achievements of Romance language corpus-driven studies deserve more attention from the scientific community at the world level for both their quantity and quality. This book contains papers given at the 3rd International LABLITA Workshop in Corpus Linguistics (Italian Department, University of Florence, June 4th-5th 2008 ), and it aims at integrating new ideas and results derived from Romance language corpora in the framework of the overall achievements of Corpus Linguistics. The volume contains the contribution of a leading scholar of Corpus Linguistics (Douglas Biber), and a set of articles presented to Biber by notable European researchers and those from other countries. Papers report on long-term studies ranging from Italian to Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese.

Abstract:
Bootstrap model selection is proposed for the difficult problem of selecting important factors in non-orthogonal linear models when the number of factors, P, is large. In the method, the full model is first fitted to the original data. Then B parametric bootstrap samples are drawn from the fitted model, and the full model fitted to each. A submodel is obtained from each fitted full model by rejecting those factors found unimportant in the fit. Each distinct selected submodel is then fitted to the original data and its Mallows Cp statistic calculated. A subset of good submodels based on the Cp values is then obtained. A reliability check can be made by fitting this subset to the BS samples also, to see how often each submodel is found to be a good fit. Use of the method is illustrated using a real-data sample.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 discusses the problem that a normative understanding of structural requirements of rationality seems to allow for the detachment of unacceptable conclusions about what we ought or have reason to do. The chapter begins by illustrating the ‘bootstrapping problem’ that occurs when we take the relevant requirements to have narrow scope (4.1), and then discusses and rejects two strategies to solve this problem: the reasons strategy (4.2), and the subjective ‘ought’ strategy (4.3). A third, and more promising, strategy is presented, which blocks bootstrapping by taking structural requirements of rationality to have wide scope (4.4). The remainder of the chapter examines further detachment problems that arise when the wide-scope account is combined with independent principles about the transmission of reasons and ‘oughts’ (4.5–4.7). The conclusion is that the wide-scope account ultimately fails to block detachment of unacceptable normative conclusions (4.8).

Abstract:
This paper is a critical assessment of Scott Shapiro’s planning theory of law, laid out in his 2011 book Legality. The planning theory could be considered a culmination of some dominant trends in contemporary philosophical thinking about the nature of law. And the problems of the theory identified in this paper are, in the author’s view, symptomatic of those trends. Here, those trends are diagnosed in a way that shows why they lead to the problems identified, while the chapter also addresses some problems specific to the planning theory. Elsewhere, the author has been developing an alternative and, what appears to him to be, better trajectory in legal philosophical thinking shorn of those trends. Although the arguments of this paper are in great measure negative, they are meant to have the positive effect of helping the reader to see why that alternative trajectory is worth developing.
