Prasad, Lawrence Rakesh. "Behind the front line stressors and coping in Border Services Officers." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43536.

Full text
Abstract:
Eighty one Border Services Officers (BSOs) completed a survey package to explore BSOs’ levels of occupational stress using the Police Stress Questionnaire-Organization (PSQ-Org) and Police Stress Questionnaire – Operational (PSQ-Op). Data analysis explored gender differences, years of service, armed versus unarmed officers and coping styles. Officers reported moderate levels of stress on the PSQ-Org and PSQ-Op across all variables examined. A correlation matrix determined relationships between coping strategies and the PSQ-Org and PSQ-Op. The PSQ-Org was significantly correlated with disengagement coping r = .26, p = < .05 while the PSQ-Op was correlated to both engagement coping r = .28, p = < .05 and disengagement coping r = .35, p = <.01. Gender differences in coping were found as female officers had a significant correlation between engagement coping and the PSQ-Org r = .41, p = < .05 and the PSQ-Op r = .53, p = < .01. Significant correlations between engagement coping and social support coping were also found for female officers r = .67, p = < .01. Male officers reported using disengagement coping which was significantly correlated with all three stress measures PSQ-Org r = .32, p = < .05, PSQ-Op r = .43, p = < .01, and weekly stress r = .32, p = < .05. Qualitative data suggested that BSOs may have experienced role conflict, role ambiguity, and role overload associated with organizational stressors comprised of management style and short staffing. Impact of current study on proactive interventions in the workplace is discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how changing Vietnamese state control over the Vietnam-China border has impacted cross-border trade networks and livelihoods of border residents in Lao Cai province, North Vietnam. The investigation uses information from qualitative research with 91 marketplace traders and border officials at four crossing points in the province. I find that state control over the border and cross-border trade has increased as this trade has been progressively brought within legal parameters from 1954 to 2005.
By taking a commodity chain approach to investigate the trade networks of three locally produced goods that move across the border I discuss the complex interactions of state policy, social relations and location factors in shaping contemporary cross-border trade. This investigation suggests that state policy to encourage small scale cross-border trade and new tradable commodities are increasing the livelihood options available to border residents in the province.

Abstract:
This paper investigates how an administrative border affects the identity making of peopleliving in the border region of Rundu, situated in northern Namibia adjacent to Angola. Thepurpose of the study is to investigate how ethnic and national identity is dependent on thespace it is fostered in. The focus has been on the state boundary from a micro level; to seehow the Namibians living in the area perceive their ethnic belonging and how they look uponthe border, hence taking an interest in the narratives of the people. It applies Social IdentityTheory in order to investigate the process of identity making, both in regard of a nationalidentity and ethnic identity, which goes well in hand with the angle of borders having a binarydistinction e.g. here and there, inclusion and exclusion. Thus, the study draws on theoriesfrom both cultural geography, social anthropology and social psychology. The result of thestudy indicate that people in Kavango have a national identity which is superior to their ethnicidentity, but it is fragile and they easily turn to their ethnic identity. The result also shows thatthe people have accepted and emphasise the differences between Namibia and Angola, whichwas first imposed as a strategic act from the colonials, and this indicates that the border actsas both an institution and a process.

Renoult, Sophie. "Crossing the Line: The Identity of American Citizens Who Live in Mexico and Attend U.S. Border Town Schools." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/265360.

Abstract:
This case study explored the negotiation of identities of American-born Mexican descent high school students in a US-Mexico border region. These students resided mostly with their parents and families on the Mexican side, and having legal American status, crossed the border daily to attend high school on the U.S. side. This qualitative study was informed by social and historical perspectives, and emphasized the identity of border crossers, examining the question of how they positioned themselves when faced with Americanization on the U.S. side and Mexicanization on the Mexican side. The study included a total of 19 participants: 3 students of primary focus, and 16 secondary participants (6 other high school students, 6 educators and 4 parents.) This sample of convenience was recruited at Isler High School, the researcher's place of work. Interviews were conducted with each participant, and the three focus students kept a month-long journal. Finally, some students in the secondary group provided valuable information through focus group discussion. Using Gee's (2001) theoretical framework that proposes four perspectives for viewing identity (Nature, Institution, Discourse and Affinity), the researcher found that the focus participants, each one bilingual, considered English an instrument to become American and be recognized as such. However, each "confessed" to code-switching, but preferred to avoid it. The three focus students self-identified as either Mexican or Mexican and American. One strongly rejected the possibility of being ascribed the identity of a Chicano. The study showed that student border crossers are perfectly fluent in both English and Spanish, contrary to commonly held belief, and that they identify with Mexico, but also with the United States.

Islam, Mohammad Wahidul. "The Construction of Identity in Edwidge Danticat's The Farming of Bones." Thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Engelska, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-4199.

Full text
Abstract:
The Farming of Bones deals with issues surrounding the dynamic connections between identity and boundary construction in post-colonial context. It will present an analysis of how the novelist problematizes and communicates her idea of social and national identity construction to her readers and how the readers can identify themselves with the struggles and challenges of the protagonist Amabelle who is trying to find her own identity. This essay will show how Danticat’s novel contributes to an understanding of national identity beyond borders and makes the reader take the role of an individual who constructs her identity by uncovering moments of raw humanness. Until now, no literary scholar has examined the protagonist’s therapeutic role in bridging this social and national gap. Instead critics have discussed other issues of the novel like crossing and re-crossing the border, love, dreams, etc. Although this scholarship has been very effective and rewarding, it lacks any focus on the complexity of the characters’ identity construction. Therefore, this paper will reconsider Danticat’s The Farming of Bones with a closer attention to the question of identity.

The currently discussion about the borderline can clearly be evidenced by the multiple works developed currently. Its concept loads a diversity of meanings that, identified in distinct historical realities, exceeds the simple idea of the politics landmark between countries, regions or cities. The border-line looked like a territory, express as a cultural space of meeting, where identities establish forming new territories and new territorialities. The border-line between urban and the rural, before defined for easily verifiable limits, today, in consequence of the expansion of the urban tissue and constant redefinition of the urban perimeters, becomes diffuse forming hybrid spaces that keep in such a way urban and rural characteristic. Hybrid spaces that each time more tend to shelter innumerable forms and functions that become these transition areas territories of great interest. In this direction, the proposal of this work is to present a discussion about the border-line between urban and the rural in the city of Juiz de Fora. Border-line formed from the constant advance of the urban perimeter results, where old practical of culture of the land and creation of animals coexist with activities said urban, redefining production processes and territory appropriation.
