Abstract:
In 1907, William Henry O’Connell, the Massachusetts-born son of Irish immigrants, was appointed bishop. He had huge churchly ambition and won designation as Cardinal Archbishop of Boston. However, his attempts to develop a complete parochial school system in the city met with limited success. This chapter explores the reasons for the discrepancy between O’Connell’s rhetoric and the reality. The major factors are the Irish community’s lack of a tradition of attending parochial schools, the small numbers of Catholics in Boston from ethnic groups that did support public schools, and the fact that most Boston Catholic parents and parish priests had always attended the public schools and emerged with their faith intact.

Abstract:
The Boston-born son of Irish immigrants, Bishop John Williams concentrated his energies on building up the purely religious as well as the charitable activities of the Boston diocese during his forty-year reign. Despite his proclivity for Roman Catholic separateness, he never became an active advocate of parochial schools. His stance on the school question may have been determined by his failure to grasp the profound social changes that had taken place in his lifetime and his belief that Catholic families could remedy any deficiencies of the Protestant public schools. At the same time, a small network of local “schoolmen” pastors developed a nucleus of parochial schools. Ambitious Irishmen began emerging from the local wards as powerful Democratic Party politicians, even winning seats on the powerful School Committee and the mayoralty.

Abstract:
This book is a synthesis of the political and the creative, telescoping modern history and politics with theatre and television drama. It centres on ten writers: St John Ervine (1883–1971), Thomas Carnduff (1886–1956), John Hewitt (1907–87), Sam Thompson (1916–65), Stewart Parker (1941–88), Graham Reid (1945–), Ron Hutchinson (1947–), Gary Mitchell (1965–), Christina Reid (1942–2015), and Marie Jones (1951–). While never intending to ghettoize Protestant writers, or indeed suggest that only those from this background can write illuminatingly about it, one of the reasons the book does not focus on the work of a playwright like Donegal-born Frank McGuinness—especially ...

Retallack, James. “Red Saxony!”. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199668786.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
The long build-up to the Reichstag elections of 1903 produced a dramatic outcome when Social Democrats scored an overwhelming victory. The epithet “Red Saxony” was born overnight, and thereafter it remained a triumphal shout for Social Democrats and a nightmare for their enemies. This chapter begins by examining the 1903 election in its local, regional, and national contexts. The SPD’s organizational strength and élan are considered in light of the shock this election produced. The election also restarted a suffrage reform debate that convulsed Saxon political society until 1909. The Saxon government presented a complicated, hybrid suffrage proposal at the end of 1903. It was torpedoed by the anti-socialist parties in the Landtag. But by 1905 this defense of Saxony’s three-class suffrage had confounded National Liberal attempts to challenge Conservative hegemony, and it fueled further working-class protests.

Wilberg, Henrik. Émile Benveniste. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474423632.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Émile Benveniste was a French linguist of Sephardic descent, born in 1902 in Aleppo in what was then the Ottoman Empire. A specialist in comparative Indo-European grammar and, in the interwar years, a student of Ferdinand de Saussure’s follower Antoine Meillet at the École pratique des hautes Études in Paris, he held the chair of linguistics at the Collège de France from 1937 to 1970.1 Having published widely since 1935, Benveniste came to prominence outside the field of linguistics in 1956, when he contributed a famous article on the function of language in Freud to the first issue of Jacques Lacan’s early journal, La psychanalyse.2 From 1960 onwards, at the height of structuralism’s influence, he founded and co-edited another journal, L’homme, alongside the anthropologist Claude LÉvi-Strauss and the geographer Pierre Gourou.
