Abstract:
The letter of recommendation (LOR) plays a significant role in the application process for many professional positions, offering descriptive rather than quantitative information from a third party about an individual’s potential fit within the hiring organization. Such letters, however, increasingly appear online, emphasizing existing problems within the genre and creating others involving trust, reliability, and confidentiality. Typically, the response has been that such digitization of the LOR minimizes its significance or standardizes it. This article analyzes the digital LOR genre as an exemplar of epideictic rhetoric situated within a Perelmanian framework and demonstrates how the digital LOR operates rhetorically, enhancing the adherence between candidate, writer, audience, and institutional values and providing a means of evaluating candidate fit. The article also offers a rhetorical heuristic that captures how audiences can more fruitfully read the epideictic, digital LOR, thereby demonstrating how to optimize the digital platform’s benefits and still use the LOR to its best rhetorical advantage.

Abstract:
During the last few years, there has been a shift from a physical to a digital focus within companies. In line with the digital transformation, the number of born digitals has increased in the market. Born digitals often exclude stages in the traditional internationalization theories and use different strategies to reach new markets rapidly. The aim of this thesis is to widen the understanding of born digital internationalization and identify characteristics of the speed. To investigate characteristics we conducted semi-structured interviews with managers of born digital firms. The Gioia method was used to analyze the empirical data and three aggregated dimensions were characterized; an aligned growth strategy, level of digital presence and network capacity, and the ability to change. The internationalization strategy and speed varied between the companies depending on different barriers in terms of e.g. culture or legal circumstances. The digital transformation has also entailed companies to have a digital presence in all countries worldwide and tailor their business models digitally. Some companies can leverage their business model to foreign countries to accelerate the internationalization without having a local office in that particular country, while other firms are in greater need of establishing a local presence to manage e.g. their network with authorities in order to internationalize to particular countries. The ability to perform changes in the business model of a born digital company might be another characteristic, to meet customer demands in different foreign countries. In conclusion, digital business models could result in new opportunities which could affect the speed of internationalization in different ways. Keywords: Born digitals, Internationalization speed, the Uppsala model, Digital presence, Network.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the recent years, globalization has proved to be a tool widely used by companies as a facilitator of internationalization, since the process helps the integration between different parts of the globe. With this, several theories were born to explain how the process of expansion of companies beyond borders works, such as The Product Cycle Theory of 1966, the Uppsala Model of 1977, the Eclectic Paradigm Theory of 1980. Over the years, the context has changed with the use of the media and, consequently, the emergence of the Internet. Theories that study internationalization and digitization, such as Born Globals and Born Digitals Companies, emerged in order to bring a more up-to-date approach to processes that have become more dynamic and faster, often tied to smaller but no less competitive companies, different from what was seen in the early theories. At a time when much progress has been made in relation to international trade, the Corona virus pandemic arises, leading the world to understand its interdependence and leading everyone to a kind of widespread chaos generated by the closure of schools, shops, industries, raising uncertainty and unpredictability. The digitization of the business, once seen as a slow evolution, became mandatory and ended up saving companies that had the agility to understand the moment they were in. The technology giants have valued themselves thanks to the search for solutions for business, education and relationships. The following work seeks, through a quantitative approach, to understand whether the degree of digitization presented by Portuguese companies during the Covid-19 crisis mitigated the negative impact generated by the crisis. For this, a questionnaire was conducted with 260 Portuguese internationalized companies, observing structural aspects (international vision, operational management and management capacity), strategies (degree of digitization, internet as a enabler of internationalization, internet as a relevant factor in combating the crisis, quickly internationalization and overall impact of covid) and performance of these companies (growth of the degree of internationalization and performance during the crisis). Eight hypotheses were created from the three groups (structural aspects, strategies and performance), to identify possible relationships that influenced the results in combating the crisis, and 75% of the hypotheses obtained statistical proof. The results show that performance during the crisis is directly impacted by two factors: Covid's widespread impact on the company and rapid internationalization. On the other hand, digitization (degree of digitization, internet as a relevant factor and internet as a enabler of internationalization) was not a differential factor to mitigate the negative impacts, emphasizing that the research was conducted with Portuguese companies from various sectors, being able to differentiate in other contexts or in specific areas.
info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract:
Background: Three mega trends are profoundly changing today’s market dynamics; climate change, digitalization, and globalization. The increasing interconnectivity and omnipresence of digital technologies are blurring the boundaries of the physical and virtual reality, implying a shift in how digital companies create value and internationalize. Also, new policies and higher customer demand in greener and smarter technologies have created new opportunities for value creation to develop cleaner technologies that foster the growth of clean-technology firms. To be competitive and persist in a sustainable and digital economy, firms must be able to cope with changing market conditions. Strategic agility can support to avoid rigidity and benefit from change, which is fostered by strong dynamic capabilities. Knowledge gaps: The study aims to address shortcomings of digital sustainability business models and specifically characterize the emerging sector of sustainable software companies offering Cleantech-as-a-Service applications. The international potential of these ventures recognizes the need to elaborate on internationalization drivers. The globally competitive environment enforces the need to be strategically agile, whereby applying agile principles to an international context can bring a comprehensive view of internationalizing digital sustainability ventures’ critical capabilities and business model characteristics. The study will also assert the role of collaborative ecosystems in an entrepreneurial internationalization. Purpose: This study will explore the emergence of Cleantech-as-a-Service and investigate how these digital entrepreneurs achieve strategic agility in global pivoting and competitive environments. Our exploratory research aims to apply agile principles to entrepreneurial internationalization strategies, where we through six in-depth interviews will discover the role of digital cleantech firms’ dynamic business models, capabilities, and ecosystems when entering a foreign market. Theoretical framework: The conceptual frame of references is based on two major sections where the first considers the context of digital and sustainable firms and exhibits the essences of digital and sustainable business model designs and how to sustain competitiveness through the interrelation of dynamic capabilities and strategic agility. In the second section the study brings forward theory supporting the exploration of an agile internationalization for digital firms, such as virtual markets and ecosystems. The key theoretical forthcomings are summarized into a conceptual framework that combines the role and interplay of entrepreneurs, business models, as well as networks and ecosystems on the basis of strategic agility and dynamic capabilities, that jointly foster an agile and virtual internationalization. Methodology: The interpretive research used an explorative and abductive approach to perform a qualitative multiple case design. The empirical study was based on six Cleantech-as-a-Service companies where in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with the informants of significant positions. The thematic and content data analysis supported the identification of common patterns and themes through coding which guided the subsequent analysis chapter. Findings: Our study revealed characteristics and success factors of Cleantech-as-a-Service ventures operating on global volatile markets, which adopt a leagile approach. The findings supported a definition of the concept but also identified the dynamic capabilities and flexible business models leveraged to sustain international competitive agility. The key agile capabilities relate to networking, experimenting, and learning whereas business model characteristics confer resiliency, interdependency, and efficiency.

Abstract:
In 2014, the authors surveyed the born digital content legal deposit policies and practices in 17 different countries and presented the results of the survey at the 2015 International News Media Conference hosted by the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm, Sweden, April 15-16, 2015.2 Three years later, the authors expanded their team and updated the survey in order to assess progress in creating or improving national policies and in implementing practices for preserving born digital content. The 2017 survey reach has been broadened to include countries that did not participate in the 2014 survey. To optimise survey design, and allow for comparability of results with previous surveys, the authors briefly review 17 efforts over the last 12 years to understand the state of digital legal deposit and broader digital preservation policies (a deeper analysis will be provided in a future paper), and then set out the logic behind the current survey.

Abstract:

Abstract:
. . ) Asocial à un fluide a h2o-co2-ch4-nacl(n2). Abstract:
Virtuality of work has become increasingly important in the modern work environment due to globalization and increased technological development. Further, the workforce being composed of digital natives and digital immigrants with varying levels of technical abilities might have implications on organising virtual work due to different perceptions. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to understand how and why digital natives and digital immigrants differ in their perceptions of organising virtual work. In order to gain understanding of this an exploratory, qualitative research design was chosen. Data was collected from ten digital immigrants and ten digital natives and then analysed with a content analysis. The results showed that there are many similarities as well as differences between the populations. Beyond the populations, the findings suggest that work values as well as the usage of ICTs influence how the challenges and opportunities of performing work virtually are perceived by the individuals. Further, these challenges and opportunities shape the perceptions regarding the organisation of virtual work. These findings advance research in the field of virtual work through discussing the differences in perceptions between the populations and beyond them through the conceptual model on how perceptions about organising virtual work are formed. Additionally, the findings can benefit managers to understand their employees better and therefore create better virtual work environments for the future.

Abstract:
Digital services have immeasurably transformed the world economy, and so people’s lives, over the past two decades. One industry where digitalization has been slower is the financial services. Nevertheless, this has changed in the past years with the emergence of fintech companies disrupting the traditional banks and payment solutions. Several studies have researched the internationalization process of digital born globals across different industries. However, due to how recent and emerging the fintech industry is, the area is understudied. To gain insight on the internationalization process of digital born globals within the fintech industry this study was based on an empirical multiple-case study including 4 fintech companies from Sweden and Finland. The main finding of this study is that fintech firms do not expand like other digital born globals but instead follow a more traditional, incremental internationalization process. We also observed that fintech companies used an online entry strategy initially allowing a fast entry process. In some cases, they also established offline presence. Overall, we hope to contribute to theory by giving insight on which factors that cause fintech companies to expand, how the internationalization process looks, how external partnerships might influence, and which challenges they might face.

Abstract:
[EN] Modern video games are complex, diverse, immersive and pervasive, and their influence on society and people is far-reaching. Video games and their impacts were initially demonised, but over time research started assessing the positive effects of games on competencies and abilities connected to twenty-first-century skills that include cultural literacy. In line with this trend, this thesis examines how entertaining commercial titles, serious games, educational games and simulations can support players in learning and in acquiring skills that enhance cultural literacy. An analysis of the common trends for the skills and competencies needed for success in the twenty-first century ¿studied by UNESCO, the British Council, IBM, Google, LinkedIn, and the World Economic Forum, among other,¿ revealed that living in a VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world requires a new, updated model of cultural literacy. This thesis proposes such a model. A review was made of the recent literature on the impact and outcomes of video games, showing that video games can reinforce or weaken stereotypes; help to acquire cultural knowledge and develop intercultural literacy, socio-cultural literacy, cultural awareness, self-awareness, and the cultural understanding of different geopolitical spaces; and to some extent also facilitate the development of intercultural skills. The heart of the thesis is an investigation into the effectiveness of video games for tackling difficult social issues such as migratory movements and the refugee crisis. Two studies were conducted one quantitative and the other qualitative that obtained heartening results for producers of empathy video games. Many participants reported feeling more empathy and less rejection towards migrants and refugees, as well as being more motivated to actively help people in need. Additionally, a broad survey revealed the AAA entertainment game genres, characters, and in-game elements and features that digital natives find attractive and those they miss and would like in the future. The findings also confirmed that games produce not only fun but also a great deal of learning. The English language, the basics of informatics, strategic thinking, geography and history, teamwork, cultural knowledge, perspective change, and creativity are all learnt and reinforced during video game play. The evidence presented in this thesis suggests there is a demand for tools facilitating intercultural education. The high point of the thesis is the design of Chuzme, an educational digital game that focuses on raising cultural self-awareness and the acknowledgement of cultural bias in order to generate positive attitudes towards migrants, refugees and expatriates. In summary, this thesis supports the idea that video games facilitate the acquisition of cultural literacy and provides evidence on the cultural, social and communication bene¿ts of gaming that hopefully encourages scholars to actively integrate video games in their teaching practice. Abstract:
Digital archives are transforming the Humanities and the Sciences. Digitized collections of newspapers and books have pushed scholars to develop new, data-rich methods. Born-digital archives are now better preserved and managed thanks to the development of open-access and commercial software. Digital Humanities have moved from the fringe to the center of academia. Yet, the path from the appraisal of records to their analysis is far from smooth. This book explores crossovers between various disciplines to improve the discoverability, accessibility, and use of born-digital archives and other cultural assets.

Abstract:
The Petőfi Literary Museum’s Digital Humanities Centre, established last year, is in the process of creating a digital humanities platform, dHUpla. One of its sub-areas is the planning of the management of born digital materials. The development of a procedure for born digital materials is an urgent need: in addition to the existing collection items in the PIM, it is expected that in the future more and more content of this kind will be created, which will need to be managed professionally. The presentation will describe the research work carried out and the details of the workflow that is being outlined. It will present the workflow developed on the basis of the OAIS model, which covers the process from ingestion of such material to making it searchable and publishable. It covers not only the more manageable text file formats of born digital content, but also the more difficult tasks of emails or social media sites, and how to professionally extract and archive data from external media.
