Abstract:
Data from two sources-the Edinburgh Psychiatric Case Register and the psychiatric inpatient records of the Scottish Health Service-were used to compare large populations of first-admission schizophrenics born in winter (January to March) and in summer (June to October). Parallel comparisons were carried out for affective psychoses. Comparison of the months of birth of the Scottish patients with those of the general population indicated that there was a 9% excess of schizophrenic births and a 3% excess of affective births in the first 3 months of the year. In the Edinburgh material, winter-born schizophrenics were more likely than the summer-born to receive a diagnosis of paranoid or schizoaffective schizophrenia and less likely to receive diagnoses other than schizophrenia on readmission, but neither of these differences emerged in the much larger Scottish material. There were no differences between winter-and summer-born schizophrenics in age of onset, sex ratio, or prognosis in either data set, nor were any significant differences found between winter- and summer-born affectives. We have therefore failed to demonstrate any convincing differences between winter-and summer-born schizophrenics.

Abstract:
Ralph Alexander Raphael was born in Croydon on 1 January 1921, the eldest child of Jack Raphael and his wife Lily (née Woolf); there were also three daughters. The paternal family hailed from Poland; Ralph's grandfather, Solomon Raphael, was born in Klatchova. At the age of sixteen, in 1864, he had emigrated via Hamburg and Grimsby to avoid being pressed into the Russian army, and then proceeded to London. There, in 1875, he married Sarah Berg, also from Poland, and they formed a well-balanced pair, as a remarkable photograph reveals. Solomon was a fiery-tempered, soft-hearted and very orthodox Jew: Sarah was calm, efficient, humorous, and a legendary cook. Ralph's father, Jack, was one of their thirteen children.

Michael Rex Horne was born in Leicester on 29 December 1921, the first child of the Reverend Ernest Horne and Katie Horne ( née Smeeton). Ernest, his father (1882—1959), was born and brought up in Rotherham into a disciplined family of three boys and one girl, and left school at quite an early age (as was usual at that time) to work in a steelworks in Sheffield. He had an ambition to enter the ministry but assumed that his lack of formal education would make this impossible. Encouraged by the minister of a Congregational church in Rotherham, Ernest applied to Paton Theological College in Nottingham, which admitted mature students without traditional qualifications. He was admitted in 1910 and became an accredited Congregational minister in 1914.

Abstract:
AbstractOvoviviparous births of larvae of Salamandra salamandra (L) were compared from a number of disjunct habitats in northern Israel, at the south-eastern limit of the Palearctic distribution of the species. The numbers, period and rate at which larvae were born varied between different habitats. In one winter pond, 90±11 larvae per brood were born at a rate of 5 per hour during December-January; in another pond, broods of 114±13 were born at 4 per hour during November-January; in a third, 112±15 were born at a rate of 4 per hour during November-December. In a perennial spring habitat, 68±2 larvae per brood were born at a rate one per hour during February-March, while in a stream habitat, brood size was 55±10 larvae, born at two per hour over the whole year. There were no significant differences in size between larvae from different habitats. Adjustments in birth parameters of larvae born in winter ponds indicate adaptation to an unpredictable habitat.

Abstract:
Music theatre scholarship, and indeed theatre history research in general, can be accurately described as a subset of media studies. As much as we might claim the contrary to our theatre students, theatre scholarship is not, by and large, the study of live performance but is instead an analysis of our own reconstructions built from the traces theatrical events leave behind. We study not moments but materials, not what was live but rather what was left. Increasingly, these leavings are likely to be digital. Much has been written of late about the current and imminent challenges these “born digital” materials pose for librarians and archivists, and many are now developing processes and procedures for preserving and providing access to them. Relatively little published scholarship has been done using these archives, however, so the emerging practices have yet to be thoroughly tested by researchers.1 In this article I narrate my experiences using the born-digital artifacts in the Jonathan Larson collection at the Library of Congress in an effort to provide an example of one form this sort of scholarship might take.

Abstract:
Abstract The Austrian social security system covers a broad range of social risks, most of them via a compulsory social insurance system that usually ties eligibility to current or former legal employment. Nationality is of minor importance once legal employment has been achieved and, for tax-financed benefits like child benefits and minimum-income guarantee, legal residence in Austria can be proven. With almost one of five employees in Austria being foreign-born, Austria ranks high in terms of foreign participation on the labour market. While reforms under the previous Government were aimed at restricting migrants’ access to (full) benefits, it is open if the coalition formed in January 2020 will pursue a more moderate path in this regard.

Abstract:
AbstractThis book chapter provides a detailed description of the discovery, research, and validation of the case of Mr. Israel Kristal of Israel, 113, as the World’s Oldest Man titleholder for Guinness World Records. In this chapter, we show how modern scientific age validation criteria were applied to prove the credibility of the claims made about Mr. Kristal’s age. Due to the hardships Mr. Kristal faced in his early life, validating his age proved to be extremely difficult. While the first attempts to validate Mr. Kristal’s age were made in early 2014, a breakthrough in these investigative efforts did not occur until January 2016. To validate his age, the Gerontology Research Group contacted not only Mr. Kristal’s family, but also international institutions specializing in genealogical research. A special note of appreciation should go to the Jewish Records Indexing in Poland for their contributions to this investigation. As a result of this international cooperation, sufficient early-life, middle-life, and late-life evidence was obtained to meet modern validation standards. Israel Kristal was finally recognized as the oldest living man in the world on Mar. 11, 2016 (retroactive to Jan. 19, 2016). Israel Kristal is the second validated supercentenarian in the history of Israel, after Dr. Maria Pogonowska (1897–2009), who was also born in Poland. In addition, he is the current longevity record-holder of Israel.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the legacy of Takashi Shimizu's Ju-on: The Grudge (2002). The film's theatrical distribution in January of 2003 brought unexpected success in Japan and sparked a fury of activity that garnered momentum around the globe. Some Western critics were lukewarm about the nonlinear timeline of Ju-on: The Grudge, or even downright hostile. Despite its detractors, the film's domestic popularity resulted in Ju-on: The Grudge 2, released on the heels of its predecessor later the same year, while an American remake produced by Sam Raimi hit screens in 2004. This quick succession of titles in the franchise raised the profile of Ju-on's mythology and created recognisable icons of horror in Kayako and Toshio Saeki, ghosts who quickly joined the ranks of celebrated villains like Sadako, Michael Meyers, Freddy Krueger and company. Together with Ringu's Sadako, Kayako provided a veritable cinematic template for the contemporary Japanese ghost. The international success of the Ju-on franchise resulted not only in wider recognition of J-horror, but raised the profiles of other Asian films in the horror genre, including popular titles from South Korea (K-horror), Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter describes the life and career of Luigi Nono (1924–1990). It also provides an overview of the present volume. Born on January 29, 1924, in Venice, Nono's education and musical apprenticeship took place during the crucial years of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath, in a family and intellectual milieu which were solidly middle class while being fundamentally hostile to fascism. In 1950, Nono approached his first orchestral composition, Variazioni canoniche sulla serie dell'op. 41 di Arnold Schönberg—Schoenberg's opus 41. During the 1960s and 1970s, political commitment, social conflict, denunciation, and the treatment of individual psychology always in relation to the collective drama became constants of Nono's production as the concept of engagement took on for him the value of a “moral imperative” (Jean-Paul Sartre) to match the aesthetic imperative.

This chapter focuses on the evidence that suggests that Edmond Dede struggled to get by in the last years of his life. By 1897, when his son Eugene's daughter was born, three generations of Dedes were living together at 48 rue Liancourt. The arrangement lasted a few years, until late 1900 when Dede entered the Hospital Necker for Sick Children, the hospital nearest to their home. There, at the age of seventy-three, he died. This happened on January 5, 1901. His death certificate lists him as the son of “Bazile Dede and of Jeanne Marie Louise Dupre, deceased spouses,” a last elision of identity. No announcement of his death appeared in the Paris papers or in the Bordeaux newspapers most likely to have carried it. He had been forgotten by the bordelaise public long before.

Abstract:
The formation of the Polish Protestant community in the 19th-century Kingdom of Poland is a very interesting and relatively unknown phenomenon. Among Lutherans, coming mainly from German countries, a milieu was born that consistently strove to promote Polishness among Protestants and Protestantism among Poles. It is all the more interesting as its representatives operated under the Russian partition, and the assimilation processes intensified after the fall of the January Uprising. The article presents the profiles of Polish Evangelical leaders (Leopold Otto and Juliusz Bursche) and outlines the history of the Church. It also includes a short overview of the sources of genealogical information – record books, church press, cemeteries, and publications. Although the Evangelical- Augsburg Church in Poland is currently sparse, more and more people, both Protestants and Catholics, Poles and foreigners, are interested in learning about the biographies of their Evangelical ancestors.

Abstract:
Covid-19 pandemic is a global health issue that adversely affected every sector of the world’s economy. Fruits are known to be a source of vitamins providing the body with necessary defense against infections (inclusive of Coronaviruses). Nigerians prefer to buy ready-to-eat (RTE) fruits than whole fruits due to their high prices. Consumer perception of RTE fruits sold in Ogun and Lagos, Nigeria during the Covid-19 pandemic months in 2020 and within January and March 2021 via an online survey were compared. Ogun and Lagos states were selected because they represent major entry routes for land and air travel into Nigeria respectively. 500 respondents were obtained with 49.7% each as male and female respectively in Ogun state while Lagos had 49.5% and 50.5% of the male and female gender. In addition, the predominant age group that responded to the questionnaire falls within 21 – 30 with 49.7% in Ogun state and 54.1% in Lagos state. 96.1% of the respondents in Ogun state had a tertiary education while 99% was recorded to possess tertiary education in Lagos state. 34% respondents took RTE fruits 2- 3 times a week, 31.2% less than once a week while only 2.8% took RTE fruits 4 – 5 times a week. From the survey, 84% of the respondents were aware that fruits possess needed vitamins to fight infections while only 87.4% of the respondent were aware of fruit borne poisoning and have knowledge of fruit borne pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiellaspp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Penicilliumspp, Aspergillusnigerand Rhizopusstolonifer. This study shows that fruit consumers neglected health consciousness in the purchase of RTE fruits in Ogun and Lagos in the first 3 months of 2021 compared to 2020. This negligence may result in a spike of another Covid-19 wave in Ogun and Lagos if the necessary food and health regulatory authorities fail to act timely. Also, the application of an effective hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) application reduces the chance of contamination of ready- to- eat fruits.

Abstract:
Understanding where, when, and how conditions are changing along the extent of an energy pipeline system, which can be vast, is a challenging task. The challenge can be even greater when natural disasters1 create a condition where access to affected pipelines, qualified personnel, and equipment is limited. To address these challenges, pipeline operators are working directly with experts in satellite technology to develop innovative applications incorporating the use of satellite technology and analytical processes to improve natural disaster monitoring and response. Through recent experiences following Hurricane Harvey in the Gulf Coast region of the United States in August-September 2017 and the wildfires and mudslides in Southern California that occurred in December 2017 to January 2018, space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data was shown to be a useful tool for wide-area monitoring. Satellite-based SAR imagery has the unique advantage of penetrating through cloud cover and smoke and is capable of providing an early view of the extent of damage in both conditions. Satellite data and continuous improvements to their derived analytical products have resulted in significant benefits for pipeline operators preparing for and responding to the effects of potentially damaging natural processes, including river scour, erosion, avulsion, mudslides, and other threats to pipeline integrity and public safety. SAR change detection algorithms and processes can provide effective results in identifying areas affected by natural disasters that are not readily available by other means. These methods also provide timely information for allocating and directing resources to the most critical locations in support of post-disaster assessment and analysis. SAR satellite data and Amplitude Change Detection (ACD) algorithms provided the basis for confirming where flooding near pipeline infrastructure was most substantial following Hurricane Harvey. In the case of the Southern Californian forest fires and mudslides in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, recent investigations into ACD and Coherence Change Detection (CCD) algorithms showed promising results, providing a detailed view of damaged areas in near-real time. This paper describes the process of collecting, analyzing, and applying satellite data for assessing the impacts of natural disasters on pipeline infrastructure, and the methods applied, consisting primarily of multiple change detection algorithms, that are used to process the large volume of satellite archive images to extract relevant changes. This paper also describes how these tools and products were practically applied to support decisions by pipeline operators to protect and ensure the integrity and safety of pipelines in the affected areas.
