Abstract:
George Gissing was obsessed with the question of ‘home’, in his own restless mobility as well as that of his characters, whose domestic circumstances he invariably enumerated in detail. Gissing's Born in Exile moves between real and fictional locations in London, Exeter, and the industrial north of England, but also between a variety of lodgings, chambers, and houses which accommodate, constrain, and only occasionally liberate their occupants. Their contradictory and volatile attitudes to these ‘homes’ parallel Gissing's unstable reactions to his own lodgings and highlight the relative nature of locations between town and country as well as differences in perception of the same physical surroundings. Descriptions of and debates about ‘home’ in Born in Exile provide a prelude to Gissing's later, more dogmatic pronouncements in The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft, also penned – in fiction – from the perspective of the country around Exeter.

Abstract:
Abstract Published evidence suggests that inherent rhythmically active or “bursting” primary olfactory receptor neurons (bORNs) in crustaceans have the previously undescribed functional property of encoding olfactory information by having their rhythmicity entrained by the odor stimulus. In order to determine whether such bORN-based encoding is a fundamental feature of olfaction that extends beyond crustaceans, we patch-clamped bORN-like ORNs in mice, characterized their dynamic properties, and show they align with the dynamic properties of lobster bORNs. We then characterized bORN-like activity by imaging the olfactory epithelium of OMP-GCaMP6f mice. Next, we showed rhythmic activity is not dependent upon the endogenous OR by patching ORNs in OR/GFP mice. Lastly, we showed the properties of bORN-like ORNs characterized in mice generalize to rats. Our findings suggest encoding odor time should be viewed as a fundamental feature of olfaction with the potential to be used to navigate odor plumes in animals as diverse as crustaceans and mammals.

Abstract:
Separated refugee young people (SRYP) who arrive in the UK without parents or carers can present with a range of needs as well as coping abilities. Within the small body of literature currently available, these young people can be described as having "a hunger for education, and a capacity and stubborn willingness to succeed despite the odds" (Kohli &Mather, 2003. Page 210). The current qualitative study aimed to gather and explore the views of SRYP who have attended an educational setting since arriving in the UK. In particular, the study aimed to explore the role of education in the lives of SRYP males. Six young males who arrived in the UK from Afghanistan, Kuwait, Albania and Guinea were interviewed using semi-structured interviews around their experiences of education and other systems since their arrival. The data was analysed using inductive/deductive Thematic Analysis and four themes were identified: Identity, Agency and attribution, Coping, Relationships. Limitations of the study and recommendations for further research will be made. This study adds to the very limited body of research which explores the views of SRYP in relation to education, and therefore has implications for EPs, school staff, social workers and other staff working to support SRYP in educational settings

Não existem dados reportados na literatura de SCT para a molécula do Etanol (C2H5OH).<br>We have measured the absolute Total Cross Section (TCS) for methanol and ethanol molecules using an apparatus manufactured at the Molecular Spectroscopy Laboratory at DF/UFJF, which employ the linear transmission technique. The experimental data were taken at incident electron energies of 70, 80, 90, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 and 500 eV for methanol and ethanol and also of 60 eV for ethanol. The energy resolution in all measurements was 0,6 eV (FWHM) and the overall systematic uncertainty at the TCS were evaluated to be less than 5%. The pressure range in the scattering cell was chosen between 1 and 4mTorr. Those electrons which passed the exit orifice of the chamber were discriminated with a 127o cylindrical energy selector coupled with an entrance set of electrostatic lenses and detected by a Faraday cup. Measuring the attenuation of intensity of the projectile-particle beam transmitted through the target volume, the absolute TCS for a given impact energy was derived from the Beer-Lambert law. The measurements were carried out for a given energy in a series of alt least 4 runs, each one taking at least 7 values and an averaging procedure was applied to derive the final total cross section at a particular energy. Besides the experimental measurements, we have additionally determined TCS using the Additivity Rule. We have also evaluated our experimental data using a fitting procedure with the Born-like formula containing two parameters for each gas. Our experimental data are in good agreement with the majority of previous measurements published in the literature. There are no previous reports of experimental electron scattering Total Cross Section C2H5OH in the literature.

Abstract:
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most prescribed antidepressant class of drugs. However, they have a delayed onset of action, which is not fully explained by the activation of serotoninergic neurotransmission. Does the integration of young neurons from adult hippocampal neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus play a key role? To answer this question, we investigated the changes in neurotransmissions in the ventral DG caused by the integration of these new neurons after chronic fluoxetine treatment, by coupling intracerebral microdialysis to pharmacologic and optogenetic tools. Chronic fluoxetine decreased glutamatergic transmissions in the DG. Since the GluN2B subunit of NMDA receptors in young neurons has a key role in antidepressant effects, we aimed to inhibit young neurons by local administration of a selective GluN2B subunit antagonist (Ro25-6981) in chronically-treated mice with fluoxetine, which increased DG extracellular levels of glutamate and GABA. Finally, the selective optogenetic stimulation of young neurons revealed an increase in DG extracellular GABA levels. My thesis work provides indirect and direct arguments for the role of adult-born granule cells’ in neurochemical effects, which would provide the link between the electrophysiological and behavioral effects attributed to young neurons

Abstract:
A disease is often associated with a cascade reaction pathway involving proteins, co-factors and substrates. Hence to treat the disease, elements of this pathway are often targeted using a therapeutic agent, a drug. Designing new drug molecules for use as therapeutic agents involves the application of methods collectively known as computer-aided molecular design, CAMD. When the three dimensional (3D) geometry of a macromolecular target (usually a protein) is known, structure-based CAMD is undertaken and structural information of the target guides the design of new molecules and their interactions with the binding sites in targeted proteins. Many factors influence the interactions between the designed molecules and the binding sites of the target proteins, such as the physico-chemical properties of the molecule and the binding site, the flexibility of the protein and the ligand, and the surrounding solvent. In order for structure-based CAMD to be successful, two important aspects must be considered that take the abovementioned factors into account. These are; i) 3D fitting of molecules to the binding site of the target protein (like fitting pieces of a jigsaw puzzle), and ii) predicting the affinity of molecules to the protein binding site. The main objectives of the work underlying this thesis were: to create models for predicting the affinity between a molecule and a protein binding site; to refine the geometry of the molecule-protein complex derived by or in 3D fitting (also known as docking); to characterize the proteins and their secondary structure; and to evaluate the effects of different generalized-Born (GB) and Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) implicit solvent models on the refinement of the molecule-protein complex geometry created in the docking and the prediction of the molecule-to-protein binding site affinity. A further objective was to apply chemometric methodologies for modeling and data analysis to all of the above. To summarize, this thesis presents methodologies and results applicable to structure-based CAMD. Results show that predictive chemometric models for molecule-to-protein binding site affinity could be created that yield comparable results to similar, commonly used methods. In addition, chemometric models could be created to model the effects of software settings on the molecule-protein complex geometry using software for molecule-to-binding site docking. Furthermore, the use of chemometric models provided a more profound understanding of protein secondary structure descriptors. Refining the geometry of molecule-protein complexes created through molecule-to-binding site docking gave similar results for all investigated implicit solvent models, but the geometry was significantly improved in only a few examined cases (six of 30). However, using the geometry-refined molecule-protein complexes was highly valuable for the prediction of molecule-to-binding site affinity. Indeed, using the PB solvent model it yielded improvements of 0.7 in correlation coefficients (R2) for binding affinity parameters of a set of Factor Xa protein drug molecules, relative to those obtained using the fitting software.

Abstract:
“This book offers an account of the life of Shibusawa Eiichi, who may be considered the first ‘internationalist’ in modern Japan, written by his great grandson Masahide and published in 1970 under the title, Taiheiyo ni kakeru hashi (Building Bridges Over the Pacific). Japan had a tortuous relationship with internationalism between 1840, when Shibusawa was born, and 1931, the year the nation invaded Manchuria and when he passed away. The key to understanding Shibusawa’s thoughts against the background of this history, the author shows, lies in the concept of ‘people’s diplomacy,’ namely an approach to international relations through non-governmental connections. Such connections entail more transnational than international relations. In that sense, Shibusawa was more a transnationalist than an internationalist thinker. Internationalism presupposes the prior existence of sovereign states among which they cooperate to establish a peaceful order. The best examples are the League of Nations and the United Nations. Transnationalism, in contrast, goes beyond the framework of sovereign nations and promotes connections among individuals and non-governmental organizations. It could be called “globalism” in the sense that transnationalism aims at building bridges across the globe apart from independent nation-states. In that sense Shibusawa was a pioneering globalist. It was only in the 1990s that expressions like globalism and globalization came to be widely used. This was more than sixty years after Shibusawa Eiichi’s death, which suggests how pioneering his thoughts were.” [Akira Iriye]

Abstract The Austrian social security system covers a broad range of social risks, most of them via a compulsory social insurance system that usually ties eligibility to current or former legal employment. Nationality is of minor importance once legal employment has been achieved and, for tax-financed benefits like child benefits and minimum-income guarantee, legal residence in Austria can be proven. With almost one of five employees in Austria being foreign-born, Austria ranks high in terms of foreign participation on the labour market. While reforms under the previous Government were aimed at restricting migrants’ access to (full) benefits, it is open if the coalition formed in January 2020 will pursue a more moderate path in this regard.

This chapter details Roland Penrose's early life. Roland was born on 14 October 1900. He had two older brothers Alexander (Alec) and Lionel, born in 1896 and 1898, respectively. His Irish-born father James Doyle Penrose was a painter, very much a traditional, proficient, and popular Royal Hibernian Academician, specialising in portraits and religious and historical themes. His mother Josephine was the daughter of Lord Peckover, an eminently successful East Anglian banker. Piety linked Josephine and James: they were devout Quakers. Like many wealthy women of her generation, Josephine's days were so filled with performing good deeds outside her home that she did not have much time to spend with her offspring. All in all, Roland had a happy childhood. In retrospect, he felt he and his brothers had been too restrained by their parents.
