This thesis presents the result of research into small-scale enterprise in Borno State of Nigeria. The development of the small-enterprise sector has been a policy objective in the country over the past decade. Its main contributions are envisaged as creating employment, contributing to industrialisation, spreading industry to rural areas, and mobilisation of local resources. The growth of the sector and its contribution have, however, not been as great as desired.Lack of information and advice for potential and existing small-scale enterprises can restrict their development and growth. This aspect had not previously been studied in depth in the Nigerian environment. This created the need to study the information needs of and sources available to small firm entrepreneurs. The research was concentrated in Borno State. The method of study involved interview with small firm agencies and with small firm owner/managers.The study found that there are quite a number of programmes for assisting small firm entrepreneurs but emphasis is mainly laid in providing material and technical assistance rather than information and counselling. The existing agencies are also found to be constrained in providing effective assistance to small firm entrepreneurs by inadequate organisation. The perceived needs of small firm entrepreneurs on the other hand are mainly related to finding resources. Need for management competence is unrealised or suppressed. They tend to look for information on their perceived needs through informal personal sources and business contacts and are reluctant (due to a lack of confidence) to contact Government sponsored services for assistance.The main recommendation is for an overhaul of government aided assistance to small firms and a need to stress the development of management competence rather than emphasis on material support. In particular it is recommended that the several existing services be coordinated into an information network of assistance programmes. This will consist of consultancy units, a business information unit, a coordination centre and a credit guarantee scheme.

L'etude principale est agencee en trois parties. Dans une premiere partie on traite de l'histoire des etats hausa des origines jusqu'au debut du xvie siecle. L'histoire des trois etats hausa est analysee en detail : kano, katsina et kebbi. Durant une premiere periode le pays hausa subit la domination du borno (xiiie debut xive s. ). Redevenu autonome durant une seconde periode (2e moitie du xive s. ), le pays hausa est submerge par un mouvement politico-religieux inspire par les wangara originaires du mali. Ensuite, durant une troisieme periode (2e moitie du xve s. ), le borno retablit sa suzerainete sur tous les etats hausa a l'exception du kebbi. Apres une breve domination songhay les kanta du kebbi contestent durant le xvie s. La domination bornoane sur les etats hausa. Dans une deuxieme partie on traite des populations tchadiques du borno et des sao. Avec le deplacement de la residence des sayfuwa du kanem au borno les populations tchadiques vivant aux alentours de la nouvelle capitale obtiennent le statut privilegie d'une population "sao". Les historiographes du borno les assimilent aux "populations protegees". Les descendants des populations concernees continuent jusqu'a nos jours a designer leurs ancetres ante-islamiques comme "sao". Dans une troisieme partie on traite des institutions politiques bornoanes et en particulier des grands offices de l'etat. La grande stabilite des institutions politiques sayfuwa a travers le temps permet de reconstituer avec beaucoup de precisions le regime politique des sayfuwa au xvie s. On distingue entre les offices du palais, les grands offices du trone, les offices de la capitale et les offices territoriaux.

This is a study of the social and legal consequences of family breakdown in Nigeria as a whole but with specific reference to Borno State. It examines the effects of family breakdown on the husband and wife or wives and their children under the General Laws, Customary Law and Islamic Law of the people of Maidugurij Biu, and Gwoza areas of Borno State. The study covers the post-Independence period-i. e from 1960 to today. The aim of the study is to show how the social and economic changes in society affect the family at divorce. Although social change is part of any society, this study shows that the formal law on family breakdown and its consequences have not kept pace with social change, and that the dichotomy between state law and customary or Islamic law on family breakdown exists only in court. Thus the authority of the extended family, and within it, the dominance of men over womens, has not been specifically disturbed by the increasing Westernisation and rural-urban migration that has taken place since Independence. It is under this situation that the rights of women, property settlement on divorce, maintenances, and custody of children, as the main indicators of the consequences of family breakdown in any society has to be gauged. The role of the law and the state is also discussed. We argue that all the post-Colonial governments in the Federation were responsible for the present deplorable condition of victims of family breakdown not only in Borno State but throughout the country. Thus there has been no state-provided Social welfare to cater for deserted wivest children, and destitutes despite the ever increasing needs of such persons in a society that is rapidly changing. It is within this context that the effect of family breakdown on the people of Borno State is examined. The study argues that the various state authorities in Nigeria tend to abandon their responsibility to the family to the traditional customary institutions, such as the extended familyf which are now incapable of meeting the needs of victims of family breakdown. Moreoveri, the traditional family based economic system does not help women on divorce because it is predicated on the traditional power structure within the home which is in favour of men. on divorce, women are invariably left high and dry# and with few alternatives than to return home to their parents or other extended family members for support.

This thesis examines the political space of Borno part of modern-day Nigeria from 1810 to 2010. It seeks to bridge the gap between precolonial, colonial and postcolonial history while studying the evolving concept of a Bornoan space in the longue durée. This research project highlights the continuity of the spatial framework of a nineteenth-century kingdom in colonial and postcolonial Nigeria. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that the Bornoan space survived the European colonisation as the British manipulated the concept of the territory of Borno in their competition against other Europeans in Africa. European imperialism did not always destroy African polities but, in the case of Borno, favoured the reconstruction of a nineteenth-century territory within the Nigerian colony. It will be argued that the quest for territorial legitimacy led the British to constantly adapt their colonial administration to the previous nineteenth-century space as the colonial administration recycled the kingdom of Borno within the Nigerian framework. The creation of the province of Borno was thus based on the utilisation of some of its nineteenth-century borders and its concept of territoriality. Thus, Indirect Rule preserved the territory of Borno within colonial Nigeria. This last argument means that the Bornoan space was re-used and reconstructed by the colonial officials with the help of the Bornoan elite. The independent kingdom was no more but it could survive within British administration and scholarly writings. This attitude can explain why the British officials wanted to reunify German and British Borno in two United Nations plebiscites in 1959 and 1961. The Scramble for Borno which began at the end of the nineteenth century was thus not over before 1961. Postcolonial Nigeria directly inherited this administrative framework and territorial practices from its colonial predecessor. This last phenomenon can explain the creation of Borno State in 1976. However, this process came to an end in 1991 when Yobe State was carved out Borno. It will be argued that the Bornoan spatial identity is evolving and turning into a cultural phenomenon in the twenty-first century.

There are many forms of traditional health practices in Nigeria, many of which are at odds or conflict with orthodox western biomedical practices. Yet they are hightly patronized, especially by rural dwellers who make up about 80 percent of the country’s population. The objective of this thesis is to consider the traditional health practices of the Kanuri people of Borno, NE Nigeria, and the extent to which they may harm and endanger the lives of people especially mothers and children. The context of the study is the high rates of maternal and infant mortality in the state. I occupy a dual role as both an upholder of the traditions of the Kanuri people (including their health traditions) and a public health professional. The dissonance and paradox inherent in this dual role is illustrated with firsthand examples throughout the thesis. It gave me the motivation to undertake this piece of research with a view to reducing the rhetorical gap between theory and practice which pertains in the state in regard to integrating the two systems, the co-existence and integration of which is promoted by the health policy of the country as a whole. Formal ethnographic research was conducted during a five year period from 1999 to 2005. The philosophy of reflexivity was adopted, drawing on my earlier experiences in an auto-ethnographic manner. Data triangulation was employed due to the complex nature of the research. Focus group discussions, interviews and questionnaire administration were employed with different categories of research subjects – traditional and orthodox health workers, urban and rural mothers. The results show that western-trained health professionals in the state stand between their own culture, which is of course changing, and the global professional identities they have acquired through professional development and training. At the same time the traditional healers can no longer operate in a context separate from official western-based systems which co-exist with the traditional practices and are widely known to the general public in Borno. Historically, the systems have been in opposition. Now there is supposed to be collaboration and overlap.

Deux auteurs en particulier ont décrit la façon dont les sultans du Borno se sont impliqués dans le concert diplomatique pour garantir leurs intérêts commerciaux et territoriaux. Il s’agit d’un savant bornouan, Aḥmad ibn Furṭū (c. 1570) et d’un Français qui fut esclave à Tripoli dans les années 1670. À partir de l’analyse des textes produits par ces deux auteurs, cette thèse cherche à dépasser la simple histoire politique et diplomatique des sultans du Borno pour envisager les représentations, les circulations et les pratiques diplomatiques entre un État sahélien et le monde qui l’entoure à l’époque moderne, en prenant en compte les contraintes du milieu, les dynamiques sociales, économiques et religieuses ainsi que les discours et pratiques de la diplomatie<br>Located on the Western shores of Lake Chad in present-day Nigeria, the Borno Sultanate was the most important Islamic African state in the XVIth-XVIIth centuries. It influenced economical, cultural and human circulations in the whole Sahel and Sahara. Two contemporary authors described how the Borno sultans were integrated into the diplomatic exchanges in order to defend their economical and territorial interests. The first one was a Borno imam whose name named Aḥmad ibn Furṭū (c. 1570). The other was a French surgeon who was enslaved in Tripoli in the 1670s. On the basis of the texts they produced, this work aims to go beyond a political history of the Borno Sultanate and analyze the representations, the circulations and the practices of diplomacy between a sahelian state and its neighbours in the Early Modern period, taking into consideration the influence of environmental, religious, economical and social dynamics as well as the discourses and practices of diplomacy

L'un des défis sécuritaires majeurs auxquels le Nigéria a dû faire face au cours de la dernière décennie a été l'insurrection de Boko Haram dans le nord du pays. L'attention portée par de nombreux chercheurs aux récits relatifs à l'insurrection dans le nord-est, en particulier le Borno, doit son impulsion intellectuelle au climat de violence dont cette zone a été le théâtre. Cette focalisation excessive, aussi valide soit-elle, relègue quelque peu au second rang les recherches pouvant porter sur d'autres zones septentrionales, où les facteurs de risques de l'insurrection sont similaires à ceux du nord-est. Dans le cas particulier de l'État de Sokoto au nord-ouest, la capacité à endiguer la montée des violences perpétrées par Boko Haram s'organise autour du récit d'une synergie sociétale entre différentes communautés. The multiple enquiries by scholars owe their intellectual momentum to the sheer level of violence instigated by a group known as "Boko Haram". Few studies focus on the (counter-) insurgency narratives linked to states in other northern Nigerian zones where the Boko Haram crisis reached and where there are indeed risk factors for insurgency. Using the case of Sokoto, a state in Nigeria's north-west zone, this study addresses the principal question of what intervening variables have deterred a fuller expression of the Boko Haram crisis in Sokoto's societal context. In the particular case of Sokoto, the capacity to deter the escalation of Boko Haram's violence is framed around the narrative of a synergy among societal structures, which although located in the contemporary milieu, draw inspiration from Sokoto's unique historical legacy of the 19th century jihad. This study opens up understanding to the linkages between jihad narratives, insurgency, local societal actors, the potency of history and the experience of resistance against one of the world's most notorious insurgencies in recent decades

Severe intercommunal violence has repeatedly rocked Plateau State in the first decade of the new millennium, killing thousands of people. Observers have attributed the "crisis" to political, economic and social forces which breed pockets of exclusion and resentment. One notable model explains the violence through a paradigm of privileged "indigenes" who seek to prevent "settlers" from the political rights which would give them the access to the resources managed by the state and the economic opportunities that this entails. While not taking issue with the diagnosed causes of conflict, the Researcher argues that there is a substantial body of evidence being ignored which points to conflict cleavage having opened up along the divide of Christian-Muslim religious identity in a way that the settler-identity model does not sufficiently explain. On the basis that perceptions are as important as facts when it comes to seeking a transformational peace process, he sets out to map world-views, identities and ethics of the warring factions. The researcher, motivated to undertake this research by his direct experience of the 2008 crises and three years experience as an adviser to the EYN's rural development outreach in Adamawa and Borno States, posits that religion may indeed be part of the problem, and mosque and church must be partners to a solution. Forced to limit the scope of his research, he embarks on the initial stages of a practical theological investigation in order to review the conflict from a specifically religious perspective which might assist the Church in its efforts towards peace. Research is focussed on the perceptions of the pew faithful of two denominations in Plateau and Adamawa States and is based on an evaluation of interviews and focus groups which were held across a range of cohorts and settings in order to draw comparative conclusions. Respondents' backgrounds were both rural/urban, young/old, Muslim/Christian, and hailed from various ethnic groups (Berom, Tarok, Kamwe, Fali and HausaFulani). Evaluation methodology drew heavily on Grounded Theory and also included elements of Critical Discourse Analysis. The success of the methodology hinged on the ability of the Researcher to establish rapport and trust with respondents. The applied research methods were foremostly designed to build theory rather than statistically test any hypotheses. The thesis detects evidence not only for the salience of religion as a factor in the way conflict unfolds, but of religion displacing ethnicity as the marker of identity in some locations and age groups. It also demonstrates how ethno-religious narratives stemming from former rural strife between nomadic and sedentary populations and urban conflicts resulting from the competition for indigene rights have been conflated and then further reinforced by the emerging threat of Boko Haram, resulting in a narrative of a unified Muslim programme for conquest, domination and forced conversion. In tune with an undertaking couched in practical theology, this research also identifies a number challenges to the Church's witness and its ability to be a convincing force for reconciliation which arise from this. Eminently, there are signs that ethnocentric mores have been integrated into an emerging Christian identity, which engenders a monolatric perception of God and a penchant to reinforce boundaries rather than remove them. However, Christians also feel restricted by a Christian imperative to forego violence and beleaguered by an Islamic front which they perceive as having moral licence to perpetrate violence in pursuit of dominance. The researcher holds the conviction that it is the Nigerian Church who must embark on a theological process on her own to respond to some of these problems, and concludes with a number of propositions and recommendations to assist her on this voyage.

O nitreto de boro hexagonal (h-BN) tem uma estrutura cristalina similar ao grafite e é
conhecido como um importante material cerâmico com propriedades interessantes, tais
como a excelente estabilidade química, boa resistência à corrosão, baixa densidade, alto
ponto de fusão e boa condutividade térmica. Estas características fazem do h-BN um
candidato atraente para uma ampla gama de aplicações técnicas. Recentemente, muitos
estudos têm relatado a preparação de estruturas de nitreto de boro (BN) com morfologias
especiais, tais como nanofolhas, nanofios e nanotubos. Este trabalho apresenta uma rota
de síntese de nanoestruturas de BN produzidas a partir de boro elementar, nitrato de
amônio e hematita como catalisador, em forno tubular pelo método CVD (chemical
vapor deposition). A mistura de pós foi aquecida a 550 C e esta temperatura foi
mantida constante durante uma hora sem fluxo de gás. Em seguida a temperatura foi
aumentada até 1300 C sob fluxo de gás nitrogênio; esta temperatura foi mantida por
uma hora sob fluxo de nitrogênio e mais uma hora sob fluxo de gás amônia, depois disso
foi feito o resfriamento da amostra sob fluxo de nitrogênio. Para avaliar a formação e a
morfologia das nanoestruturas formadas em um segundo tratamento térmico, três valores
de temperatura final foram estabelecidos: 900 , 950 , e 1300 C. A caracterização das
amostras foi feita através de espectroscopia de infravermelho (FTIR), espectroscopia
Mössbauer, difração de raios X (XRD), análise térmica (TGA/DSC), adsorção de N2,
espectroscopia Raman, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (SEM), microscopia
eletrônica de transmissão (TEM) e análise química elementar (CHN). A amostra que
apresentou melhores resultados em relação à formação de h-BN foi purificada para
remover partículas de ferro e algumas outras impurezas utilizando dois agentes distintos:
ácido clorídrico e etanol. Através da análise dos resultados obtidos foi possível
confirmar a formação do h-BN, e explicar as reações químicas envolvidas no processo.
A partir das imagens de microscopia foi possível comprovar a formação de
nanoestruturas de BN com morfologias variadas. Entre as nanoestruturas encontradas
estão: nanofolhas, nanofibras, nanocones, bamboo-like, nanofios e nanotubos. Os
nanotubos formados possuem diâmetro variando entre 10 e 120 nm. A presença de diversas estruturas com morfologias diferentes pode ser atribuída principalmente às
variações no fluxo de gás durante a síntese. O teste inicial de citotoxicidade demonstrou
que as nanoestruturas de nitreto de boro não apresentam atividade hemolítica
considerável, indicando haver uma boa tolerância biológica.<br>Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has a crystal structure similar to graphite and it is well
known as one important ceramic material with interesting properties, such as excellent
chemical stability, good resistance to corrosion, low density, high melting point, and
outstanding thermal and electrical properties. These characteristics make h-BN an
attractive candidate for a wide range of technical applications. Recently, many studies
have been reporting the preparation of nanostructures of boron nitride (BN) with special
morphologies, such as nanosheets and nanotubes. This paper reports a synthesis of boron
nitride nanotubes produced from elemental boron powder, ammonium nitrate and
hematite in tubular furnace by CVD (chemical vapor deposition) method. The powder
mixture was heated at 550 C and this temperature was kept constant for one hour
without gas flow. After that, the temperature was increased to 1300 C and kept
constant for one hour under a nitrogen gas flow, then, another one under a flowing
ammonia gas, followed by the cooling of the sample under nitrogen flow. To evaluate
the formation and morphology of the nanostructures formed in a second heat treatment;
three values of final temperature were established: 900, 950 and 1300 C. The
Characterization of the samples was carried out by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),
Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (TGA/DSC), N2
adsorption, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission
electron microscopy (TEM) and elemental chemical analysis (CHN). The sample that
showed better results regarding the formation of h-BN was purified to remove iron
particles and some other impurities using two different agents: hydrochloric acid and
ethanol. After the analysis of the results it was possible to confirm the formation of h-
BN and to explain the chemical reactions involved. From microscopy images it was
feasible to confirm the formation of BN nanostructures with distinct morphologies.
Some different nanostructures were found: nanosheets, nanofibers, nanocones, "bamboolike",
nanowires and nanotubes. The nanotubes formed have diameters ranging between
10 and 120 nm. The presence of several structures with different morphologies can be
attributed mainly to variations in the flow of gas during the synthesis. Initial tests showed that the cytotoxicity of boron nitride nanostructures do not exhibit significant
hemolytic activity, suggesting a good biological tolerance.

Diante disso, objetiva-se com esse estudo avaliar a qualidade dos prognósticos a partir da interpretação foliar pelo Nível Crítico, pelo DRIS e pelo CND, comparando o diagnóstico de boro com a resposta na produtividade da soja. O estudo foi realizado em área experimental e comercial na região de Chapadão do Sul-MS, Brasil. No experimento de calibração, foram usadas as doses 0; 300; 600; 1.200 e 1.800 g ha-1 de B, em três pulverizações e cinco repetições. Na área experimental e em 140 lavouras comerciais, foi realizada amostragem foliar, determinando os teores nutricionais e estimado a produtividade. Apenas nas parcelas experimentais foi realizada a análise dos diagnósticos, através do confronto do diagnóstico com a resposta da planta na adição do nutriente. Cinco medidas de acurácia foram usadas para testar a eficiência dos métodos do NC (calibrado, da literatura distribuição normal reduzida (NCDNR)); DRIS (com três critérios de seleção das relações entre nutrientes), e o CND, que foram a acurácia total, acurácia para deficiência e suficiência, razão de deficiência e razão de eficiência, e o incremento líquido da produtividade. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo)<br>Abstract: The interpretation of the nutritional state of soybean can be performed by uni, bi and multivariate methods, but needs to study the accuracy of the diagnoses produced. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the quality of the prognoses from the foliar interpretation by the Critical Level, the DRIS and the CND comparing the diagnosis of boron with the response in soybean yield. The study was conducted in an experimental and commercial area in the region of Chapadão do Sul, MS, Brazil. In the calibration experiment were used doses 0, 100, 200, 400 and 600 g ha-1 B, working with three sprayings and five repetitions. In the experimental area and in the 140 commercial fildes was carried out foliar sampling to determine the nutritional content, and estimated productivity. Only in the experimental plots was carried out the analysis of diagnoses by comparing the diagnostic with the plant response in the addition of the nutrient. Five accuracy measures were used to test the efficiency of NC methods (calibrated, from reduced normal distribution literature (NCDNR)); DRIS (with three selection criteria of the relation between nutrients) and; the CND, which were the overall accuracy, accuracy and sufficiency for disability, rate of disability and rate of efficiency and the net increase of productivity. In general, the tested methods had results beneath expects or on the outline. Only the NC methods (literature and DNR), DRIS (by logarithmic transformation of relations) and CND achieved good accuracy (70-80%). When we considered the net increase, only two methods were efficient, the DRIS (by logarithmic transformation of relations) and NC (calibrated). Additionally, these components may induce the generation of a transient liquid phase in the microstructure at high temperatures, which can react with the other materials of the composition to give rise novel solid refractory phases. Considering these aspects, the present work evaluated the role of five different AS (boron oxide, boric acid, sodium borosilicate, magnesium borate and boron carbide) when added to alumina-based castable compositions containing hydratable alumina as binder. Based on the thermomechanical characterization, XRD analysis and the in situ elastic modulus measurement, boron carbide (B4C) have been selected as a promising AS because this material sped up the sintering process at lower temperatures and induced the aluminum borates formation due to the reaction between the liquid phase and the fine alumina contained in the castable matrix. Afterwards, the effects of B4C was evaluated in ultra-low calcium oxide castables bonded with: colloidal alumina (AC), hydratable alumina (AB) and/ or SioxX®-Zero (SZ). SZ-bonded materials (4 wt.%) had good performance at temperatures around 1100°C due to the mullite generation. On the another hand, castables containing AC as binder (4 wt.% of solids) and 0.5 wt.% of B4C are promising options to be used in working conditions between 600-815°C, whereas the same mixture without B4C could only be densified above 1100°C. Similar effect was observed when 1.0 wt.% B4C was added to SZ-containing castables as the aluminum borates generation allows these compositions to be used in working conditions around 815°C. Therefore, an appropriate AS selection for high-alumina castables with ultra-low CAC content has the potential to favour the earlier sintering of the refractory and improve its thermomechanical properties, which can fulfill the requirements of the petrochemical industry.<br>Os aditivos sinterizantes (AS) possuem potencial para serem aplicados em concretos refratários, pois diminuem a temperatura de densificação destes produtos. Adicionalmente, tais componentes podem atuar favorecendo a formação de líquidos transientes na microestrutura em altas temperaturas, os quais têm a capacidade de reagir com os outros constituintes da composição para formar novas fases refratárias. Diante desta possibilidade, neste trabalho foram avaliados os efeitos da adição de cinco fontes de boro como AS (óxido de boro, ácido bórico, borosilicato de sódio, borato de magnésio e carbeto de boro) em concretos de alta alumina contendo alumina hidratável como ligante. Baseado na caracterização das propriedades termomecânicas destes refratários, assim como nas análises de DRX e da avaliação do módulo elástico in situ, foi selecionado o carbeto de boro (B4C) como o AS promissor, pois este promoveu o início da sinterização dos concretos em temperaturas inferiores e induziu a formação de boratos de alumínio a partir da reação do líquido com a alumina da matriz dos concretos refratários. Posteriormente, avaliou-se o efeito da adição do B4C em concretos com ultra-baixo teor de óxido de cálcio e ligados com: alumina coloidal (AC), alumina hidratável (AB) e/ou SioxX®-Zero (SZ). Materiais ligados com SZ (4%-p) são promissores em temperaturas próximas a 1100°C devido à formação de mulita. Por outro lado, concretos contendo AC (4%-p de sólidos) e 0,5%-p B4C são indicados para condições de serviço entre 600-815°C, pois sem a fonte de boro densificaram apenas acima de 1100°C. Efeito similar foi observado quando adicionado 1,0%-p B4C no concreto contendo SZ, visto que também foram formados boratos de alumínio possibilitando sua utilização em condições de serviço próximas aos 815°C. Desta forma, realizando-se a correta seleção do AS adicionado em concretos de alta alumina com ultra-baixo teor de CAC, tem o potencial de aumentar a sinterabilidade do material e melhorar suas propriedades termomecânicas, podendo assim atender os requisitos da indústria petroquímica.

Portanto, é importante definir qual o melhor modo de aplicação e fonte de B para o bom desenvolvimento e produtividade do eucalipto, com menor custo possível. Assim, objetivou-se, com este trabalho, comparar o efeito de fontes de B com alta e baixa solubilidade na cultura do eucalipto, bem como a aplicação foliar do micronutriente. O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Renascença, localizada no município de Três Lagoas/MS, com latitude 20o 34’ S e longitude 51o 50’ O e altitude de aproximadamente 305 m, no período de 02/2012 a 02/2014. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com seis tratamentos e cinco repetições, dispostos em um esquema fatorial de 3 x 2, sendo: 0 kg ha-1 de B, 1 kg ha-1 de B utilizando como fonte o ácido bórico (alta solubilidade, 17% B) ou 1 kg ha-1 de B utilizando como fonte o borogran (baixa solubilidade, 10% B), aplicados no sulco de plantio, com ou sem aplicações de ácido bórico via foliar na dose de 0,5% de ácido bórico na calda com volume de 250 L ha-1. Com a omissão de B via foliar houve incremento em altura de plantas nos tratamentos que receberam a aplicação do micronutriente no plantio, diferindo significativamente da testemunha. Porém, ambas as fontes, independente da solubilidade, apresentaram resultados semelhantes. As duas aplicações de B via foliar foram suficientes para que houvesse incremento em altura de plantas, quando comparadas aos tratamentos que não receberam aplicação de B no plantio. Aos 18 e 24 meses após o plantio foi constatado aumento no teor foliar de B nos tratamentos que receberam aplicação foliar. A aplicação de B no plantio, independente da fonte utilizada, assim como aplicação foliar do elemento, foram suficientes para reduzir os sintomas de deficiência de B. Therefore, it is important to define how better mode of application and source for the successful development and productivity of eucalyptus, with possible cost savings. Thus, this study aimed to compare the effect of B sources with high and low solubility applied in soil and high solubility applied on leaf of Eucalyptus spp. The experiment was conducted at farm Renascença, located in Três Lagoas/MS with latitude 20 34 'S and longitude 51 50' W and altitude of approximately 305 m, in 02/2012 to 02/2014. It was used a randomized block design with six treatments and five replications arranged in a factorial scheme 2 x 3, being: 0 kg ha- 1 B, 1 kg ha- 1 B, using boric acid as source (high solubility, 17 % B) or 1 kg ha-1 B, using as source borogran (low solubility, 10 % B), applied at planting, with or without application of boric acid foliar at 0.5% in a volume of 250 Lha-1. With the omission of B foliar there was an increase in plant height in treatments with the application of boron at planting, differing from the control. However, both of these sources, regardless of the solubility, showed similar results. The two foliar applications of B were sufficient for getting an increase in plant height when compared to treatments without B application at planting. At 18 and 24 months after planting there was increased on B foliar content in treatments with foliar application. Applying B at planting, regardless of source, as well as foliar application, were sufficient to reduce the symptoms of B deficiency. Regarding the sources used at planting, dose of 1kg ha-1 B, showed similar results on plant height, DBH and volume of wood. However, borogran increased the conten of B in the soil after 24 months of planting, from 20 to 40 cm layer, which can be beneficial for crop over time

Os aços com adição de boro temperados e revenidos têm sido utilizados em diversas aplicações que exigem um compromisso entre boas propriedades mecânicas e baixo custo. Por sua grande utilização e demanda crescente em novas aplicações com exigências mais severas de propriedades mecânicas, a influência dos parâmetros do processo e do tratamento térmico subsequente no comportamento mecânico deve ser mais bem estudada. Com o objetivo principal de caracterizar o aço ao boro DIN 39MnCrB6-2, construiu-se o diagrama de fases metaestável através de simulação, a curva de ductilidade a quente e avaliou-se a influência da temperatura de revenimento na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas de tração e resistência ao impacto. Para isso, utilizou-se amostras de barras laminadas cedidas pela GERDAU - Aços Especiais Brasil de Pindamonhangaba - SP. O montante de amostras utilizadas pôde ser dividido em duas bitolas distintas: quadrada de 155 mm (grupo G1) e redonda de 34,93 mm (grupo G2). Estas amostras foram submetidas a tratamento de têmpera e revenimento e tiveram as propriedades mecânicas de tração, resistência ao impacto e dureza analisadas. Estas amostras foram caracterizadas por microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As amostras de seção transversal quadrada de 155 mm foram utilizadas para análises químicas para identificação de segregação e para a construção das curvas de ductilidade a quente. Nas amostras do grupo G1, observou-se segregação inversa de carbono e bons resultados de ductilidade a quente. As amostras de seção transversal redonda apresentaram diferenças significativas em propriedades de tração (Limite de Resistência e Tensão de Escoamento) e dureza mas não apresentaram diferença significativa em resistência ao impacto em baixas temperaturas (-40°C) em função da temperatura de revenimento. A região de fratura do corpo de prova ensaiado e foram encontrados borocarbonetos de menor dimensão. Foram obtidos bons resultados de resistência ao impacto em temperatura ambiente nas amostras temperadas e revenidas que se mantiveram mesmo com a normalização anterior ao tratamento térmico. Conclui-se que a formação de borocarbonetos é inerente aos aços ao boro e o seu crescimento deve ser evitado a fim de diminuir os pontos de fragilização na microestrutura.<br>Boron added steels in quenched and tempered condition have been used in a large number of applications with mechanical properties and low cost requirements, i.e., automotive, petrochemical and O&G industries. For its great use and increasing demand for new applications with more severe requirements for mechanical properties, it is important to study the influence of process parameters and subsequent heat treatment on the mechanical behavior. In order to characterize the boron steel DIN 39MnCrB6-2, the metastable phase diagram and the hot ductility curve were built. The influence of tempering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of tensile and impact strength was studied. For this study, DIN 39MnCrB6-2 rolled steel bars samples were used. They were provided by Gerdau - Specialty Steel Brazil Pindamonhangaba - SP. The samples could be divided into two different diameters and cross sections: square 155 mm (G1) and round 34.93 mm (G2), from sequential steps of manufacturing process. These samples were quenched and tempered and the tensile mechanical properties, impact resistance (Charpy V-notch) and hardness were analyzed. These samples were also characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Samples from the first step of rolling mill (square 155 mm) were used for chemical analysis to identify the segregation pattern and also to hot ductility tests. In samples G1 it was observed inverse segregation of carbon and no abnormal ductility loss in hot ductility test. Impact resistance results showed low absorbed energy for all tempering temperatures. Microscopy observation showed coarse borocarbides. Samples G2 showed significant differences in tensile properties and hardness related to tempering temperature. However, no significant differences in impact resistance (CVN) at low test temperatures (-40 ° C) were observed. Microscopy observation showed thin borocarbides. It was concluded that the formation of borocarbides is inherent in boron steels and their coarse morphology should be avoided in order to reduce embrittlement. Borocarbide morphology control is more effective to improve impact resistance than reduction ratio.

Previous issue date: 2017<br>Resumo: BNCT (do inglês, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) é uma terapia para tratamento de cânceres que tem se mostrado efetiva em casos de metástases e tumores inoperáveis. Sua base física é a reação de captura de nêutrons pelo boro resultando na produção de uma partícula 'alfa' e de um íon de recuo de lítio: 10B(n,'alfa')7Li. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi verificar a viabilidade de monitoração de taxa de reações de interesse em BNCT e estimar, a partir das taxas de reações medidas, quantidades probabilísticas que descrevam o campo de irradiação, utilizando-se filmes finos de boro e detectores plásticos de traços nucleares (PADC). Além disto, pretendia-se realizar estudos biológicos de sobrevivência celular, para então, com a descrição detalhada do campo de irradiação e medidas de efeitos radiobiológicos, avaliar possíveis correlações entre os efeitos de heterogeneidade de deposição de energia (quantidades probabilísticas) e as frações de sobrevivência celular. Assim, o trabalho foi dividido em três partes experimentais fundamentais: a calibração do conjunto de filmes finos de boro acoplados a detectores PADC, cuja importância é a quantificação de átomos de 10B presentes nos filmes finos utilizados para a medida da taxa da reação 10B(n,'alfa')7Li, a realização de experimentos in vitro com irradiações com partículas 'alfa' que visavam o desenvolvimento da metodologia de quantificação de sobrevivência celular, que seriam utilizadas posteriormente, quando realizados os experimentos in vitro com nêutrons, os quais unem os resultados obtidos das calibrações dos filmes finos de boro e os métodos aplicados nas análises de resposta biológica de irradiações de células com partículas 'alfa'. A partir das fluências de partículas 'alfa' e das taxas da reação 10B(n,'alfa')7Li, calculou-se as médias da distribuição de eventos poissonianos em uma célula de área A e com estas médias foram feitas simulações de distribuição de eventos em uma matriz de células, para quantificação da formação de clusters de células (primeiras vizinhas) atingidas. Por se tratar de um problema de muitas variáveis (sobrevivência celular, média de eventos, eventos por célula, células por cluster e total de clusters), escolheu-se fazer uma análise de componentes principais, na tentativa de se determinar quais destas variáveis introduzem as maiores variabilidades no problema. Mostrou-se que a formação de clusters de células vizinhas influencia a inativação das células, embora não tenha sido possível estabelecer modelos quantitativos. Portanto, com este trabalho, foi possível estabelecer uma metodologia segura para a quantificação da taxa de reação de interesse na BNCT, e a partir desta, calcular descritores que levam em conta a heterogeneidade da distribuição de energia durante as irradiações. A partir de dados de experimentos in vitro, tanto de irradiações com partículas 'alfa' quanto com nêutrons térmicos, foi possível encontrar correlações com estes descritores de heterogeneidade e conclui-se, então, que eles podem ser usados como descritores de efeitos biológicos<br>Abstract: BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) is a therapy for the treatment of cancers that has been proven to be effective in cases of metastases and inoperable tumors. Its physical basis is the boron neutron capture reaction resulting in the production of an 'alpha' particle and a lithium recoil ion: 10B(n,'alpha')7Li. The main objective of this work was to verify the feasibility of monitoring the main reactions rates in BNCT using boron thin films and nuclear tracks plastic detectors (PADC) and to estimate, from the reactions rates measured, probabilistic quantities that describe the irradiation field. In addition, it was intended to carry out biological studies of cell survival, and with the detailed description of the field of irradiation and measurements of radiobiological effects, to evaluate possible correlations between the effects of heterogeneity of energy deposition (probabilistic quantities) and fractions of cell survival. Thus, the work was divided into three fundamental experimental parts: the calibration of the setup of boron thin films coupled to PADC detectors (whose importance is the quantification of the 10B atoms present in the thin films used for the measurement of 10B(n,'alpha')7Li reaction rate), the in vitro experiments carried out with irradiations with particles 'alpha' aiming to develop the methodology for cell survival quantification, which would later be used when performing the in vitro experiments with neutrons, which combine the results obtained from the calibrations of the boron thin films and the methods applied for cell survival quantification. From the 'alpha' particles fluences and the 10B(n,'alpha')7Li reaction rates, it was possible to calculate the mean of the Poisson distribution for events happening inside a cell of area A. Simulations were performed for quantifying the number of clusters formed by neighbor cells that were hit by an incident particle. Since this is a problem of many variables (cell survival, poissonian mean, events per cell, cells per cluster and total number of clusters), it was performed a principal components analysis in an attempt to determine which of these variables introduce the greatest variabilities to the problem. It was shown that the cells clusters formation influences cell inactivation, though it was not possible to establish quantitativy models. Therefore, with this work, it was possible to establish a safe methodology for the quantification of the reaction rate of interest in BNCT, and from this, to calculate descriptors that take into account the heterogeneity of energy distribution during irradiation. From data from both in vitro experiments of cells irradiation with 'alpha' particles and with thermal neutrons, it was possible to find correlations with these descriptors of heterogeneity and it is concluded, then, that they can be used as descriptors for biological effects<br>Doutorado<br>Física<br>Doutora em Ciências

Previous issue date: 2012<br>Resumo: O princípio de funcionamento da Terapia por Captura de Nêutrons pelo Boro (BNCT, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) é a entrega seletiva de uma maior quantidade de átomos de boro às células cancerígenas do que àquelas saudáveis, seguida da irradiação com nêutrons que irá induzir a emissão de partículas a e íons de recuo de 7Li através da reação nuclear 10B(n,a)7Li. O objetivo deste trabalho é desenvolver uma metodologia para quantificar a taxa da reação de interesse através do uso da montagem de filmes finos de boro acoplados a detectores CR-39, que detectam as partículas a e os íons de recuo de 7Li. Este detector é composto por átomos de hidrogênio, carbono e oxigênio, os quais interagem com nêutrons rápidos e as partículas resultantes destas reações (de espalhamentos e de captura de nêutrons) também são detectadas pelo próprio detector. Deste modo, é possível quantificar, ao mesmo tempo, a reação 10B(n,a)7Li e a contribuição de nêutrons rápidos do fluxo. Essas medidas são fundamentais para os estudos de biodistribuição de átomos de 10B e de microdosimetria dos tecidos irradiados com nêutrons, levando ao planejamento da terapia em si. Os filmes finos de boro foram confeccionados por dois métodos, Deposição de Solução Química (CSD, Chemical Solution Deposition) e deposição por sputtering, e irradiados com nêutrons no reator nuclear IEA-R1 localizado no IPEN/CNEN. Os resultados obtidos para a caracterização e a calibração dos filmes finos de boro, além da calibração dos detectores CR-39 são aqui analisados. Foi possível confeccionar, por ambos os métodos, filmes finos de boro homogêneos e calibrar o sistema de filme fino de boro acoplado a detector CR-39 para a medida da taxa da reação 10B(n,a)7Li e para a determinação da componente rápida do fluxo de nêutrons através do uso de filmes finos de urânio e tório, respectivamente<br>Abstract: The working principle of the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is the selective delivery of a greater amount of 10B atoms to the tumor cells than to the healthy ones, followed by neutron irradiation that will induce the emission of a particles and 7Li recoil ions through the nuclear reaction 10B(n,a)7Li. The goal of this work is to develop a methodology to quantify the reaction rate of interest using an assembly of boron thin film coupled to CR-39 detector, which detects the a particles and the 7Li recoil ions. This detector is composed of atoms of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen, which interacts with fast neutrons and the resulting particles from these scattering and capture processes are also detected by the CR-39 detector. In this way, it is possible to quantify, at the same time, the reaction 10B(n,a)7Li and the fast neutrons contribution to the flux. Those measurements are fundamental to the 10B biodistribution studies and tissue microdosimetry, leading to the therapy planning itself. The boron thin films were manufactured using two methods, Chemical Solution Depostion and sputtering deposition, and irradiated with neutrons at the nuclear reactor IEA-R1 located at IPEN/CNEN. The results obtained for the boron thin films characterization and calibration, as well as the CR-39 detectors calibration are analyzed here. It was possible to manufacture with both methods homogeneous boron thin films and to calibrate the assembly of boron thin film coupled to CR-39 detector for measuring the 10B(n,a)7Li reaction rate and determining the fast component of the neutron flux through the use of uranium and thorium thin films, respectively<br>Mestrado<br>Física<br>Mestra em Física

O experimento foi realizado em um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo no município de São Carlos - SP, utilizando-se delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 3 x 3, sendo os tratamentos constituídos de três doses de boro (0, 1 e 2 kg/ha) e três doses de zinco (0, 2 e 4 kg/ha). Foi utilizado o híbrido comercial de milho AG-1043. As fontes de boro e zinco foram, respectivamente, o ácido bórico e o sulfato de zinco, aplicados ao solo juntamente com a adubação com N, P e K por ocasião do plantio. A semeadura foi realizada em 07 de dezembro de 1999, com densidade populacional de 55.000 plantas por hectare. Aos trinta dias após a emergência foram realizadas medidas para a comprimento de planta, diâmetro de colmo, área foliar, matéria seca das folhas e de toda a planta e a partir destes foram calculadas a área foliar específica, razão de peso foliar e razão de área foliar. Também foram feitas análises químicas para os teores foliares dos nutrientes. Aos sessenta e aos noventa dias após a emergência foram realizadas as mesmas análises, determinando-se os resultados para os respectivos períodos. A aplicação de boro e de zinco não resultou em elevação dos teores foliares destes nutrientes nas épocas analisadas e também não resultou em ganhos no rendimento de grãos, verificando-se a interação entre boro e zinco quando da análise para a matéria seca de folhas e peso total das plantas aos noventa dias. Concluiu-se que as aplicações de boro e zinco ao solo não resultaram ganhos de produtividade, sendo que os teores encontrados inicialmente no solo foram considerados suficientes para a produtividade atingida.<br>The objective of this research was to study the effects of boron and zinc on growth and yield corn. The experiment was carried out in São Carlos, São Paulo State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized block with 3 x 3 factorial distribution of the treatments and four replications . The treatments were three doses of boron (0, 1 and 2 kg/ha) and three doses of zinc (0, 2 and 4 kg/ha). It was utilized a commercial hybrid corn “AG 1043”. The source for boron was boric acid and the source for zinc was sulfate of zinc applied together N, P and K in the sowing. The sowing occurred in December 07 of 1999, with density of 55000 plants by hectare. In the thirty, sixty and ninety days of emergency were measured the plant height, culm, diameter, leaf area, dry matter weight and calculated other factors and they were realized chemical analyses to verify the content of nutrients in the leaves. At the harvest was determined the yield and data of the ear. The application of boron and zinc didn’t increase the content of both nutrients in the leaves and neither resulted in increase of yield of kernel. It was concluded that it didn’t interaction between boron and zinc to corn productivity. The appliance of boron and zinc don’t result in increase of productivity because the content in the soil before of the experiment installation were enough to yield reached.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-25<br>CAPES<br>Os Small Modular Reactors, SMRs, são reatores modulares compactos variantes dos reatores de geração III+ que apresentam características atrativas, como a simplicidade, maior segurança e são economicamente competitivos. Atualmente, há muitos projetos de SMRs com características estruturais distintas, como potência, tipo de combustível e frequência de abastecimento. O SMR em estudo é um reator do tipo PWR (reator de água pressurizada) que possui o sistema integrado (iPWR). Esse sistema é caracterizado pela inclusão de todo o sistema primário dentro do vaso de pressão, incluindo o gerador de vapor e o pressurizador. Em um iPWR, o pressurizador está localizado no topo do vaso do reator; esta configuração envolve mudanças técnicas como, por exemplo, alteração no mecanismo de circulação adotado para a homogeneização das concentrações de Boro. Assim, o presente trabalho representa uma contribuição para a concepção de uma instalação experimental planejada para fornecer dados relevantes para estudar os fenômenos de homogeneização de Boro no pressurizador de um reator modular compacto. Para isso, foi montada uma instalação experimental com uma seção de teste em aço inoxidável com escala de 1:200, referente a ¼ do pressurizador de um iPWR. Trabalhos anteriores determinaram os principais parâmetros para a construção de um modelo em escala reduzida para análise de dispersão de Boro no pressurizador de um reator com a configuração integral. Esses parâmetros, como medidas dos orifícios e vazão de circulação, foram a base para a execução do projeto referente a montagem experimental. Além da seção de teste, a instalação experimental dispõe de duas bombas rotativas, 5 medidores de vazão e 3 tanques em aço inoxidável, com capacidades de, aproximadamente, 70, 143 e 216 litros. A montagem foi realizada de modo que a seção de teste fosse alimentada com água ou com uma solução com concentração diferente, representando cenários de boração ou deboração. Para determinar a concentração na entrada e na saída da seção de teste, foram realizadas coletas de amostras, a cada 10 minutos, durante os experimentos que representavam alguns cenários (boração/deboração). Utilizando um condutivímetro de bancada, a condutividade elétrica dessas amostras foi determinada e convertida em concentração do elemento traço utilizado. Após a montagem, com as devidas instalações, testes de operação e execução dos experimentos, foi possível comprovar a viabilidade de empregar a montagem experimental, de maneira confiável, para obter valores que possam analisar o fenômeno de homogeneização de Boro em um pressurizador de um reator modular compacto.<br>The Small Modular Reactors, SMRs, are compact variants modular reactors of generation III + reactors that feature attractive features such as simplicity, enhanced security and are economically competitive. Currently, there are many SMRs projects with distinct structural characteristics such as power, fuel type and supply frequency. The SMR in the study, is a PWR (pressurized water reactor) reactor type that integrated (iPWR). This system is characterized by the inclusion of the entire primary system inside the pressure vessel, including a steam generator and the pressurizer. In one iPWR, the pressurizer is located at the top of the reactor vessel; this configuration change involves techniques such as, for example, change in the movement mechanism adopted for the mixing of boron concentrations. The present work is a contribution to the design of an experimental installation designed to provide relevant data to study the boron homogenization phenomena pressurizer in a compact modular reactor. For this, we assembled an experimental installation with a test section in stainless steel with scale of 1:200, referring to ¼ of the pressurizer of a iPWR. Previous work has determined the key parameters for the construction of a small-scale model for analysis boron dispersion in a reactor pressurizer with the full configuration. These parameters, such as measures of circulation orifices and flow were the basis for the implementation of the design related to the experimental setup. In the test section, the experimental apparatus has two rotary pumps, 5 flow meters and 3 stainless steel tanks with capacities of approximately 70, 143 and 216 liters. The fitting was performed so that the test section was fed with water or a solution with different concentration, or boration scenarios representing deboration. To determine the concentration at the inlet and outlet of the test section, samples have been collected every 10 minutes during the experiments representing some scenarios (boration/deboration). Using a benchtop conductivity, the electrical conductivity of these samples was determined and converted to the concentration of the trace element used. After assembly, with the operation testing and execution of experiments, it was possible to prove the viability of using the experimental setup, reliably, for values that can analyze the boron homogenization phenomenon in a pressurizer of a compact modular reactor.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de NÃvel Superior<br>Este trabalho apresenta o estudo da quantificaÃÃo de nitrofurantoina (NFT) utilizando os filmes de diamante dopados com boro como material eletrÃdico. Estudos preliminares utilizando voltametria cÃclica (VC) mostraram que o mecanismo de reduÃÃo da nitrofurantoina (NFT) envolve adsorÃÃo e à influenciado pelo pH, o nÃvel de dopagem de boro no eletrodo de diamante tambÃm influÃncia na reduÃÃo da NFT. Eletrodos de diamante com 5000, 10000 e 20000 ppm de dopagem de boro foram utilizados no estudo e os pHs: 2,0; 4,0; 6,0; 8,0 foram investigados para se obter a melhor condiÃÃo experimental. Os resultados experimentais obtidos em tampÃo Brinton-Robinson utilizando voltametria de onda quadrada mostraram apenas um processo totalmente irreversÃvel para a NFT em aproximadamente -0,35 V vs. Ag/AgCl/Cl- 3.0 mol L-1, o pico mostrou-se dependente do pH do meio e dos parÃmetros voltamÃtricos. As melhores respostas voltamÃtricas foram obtidas em tampÃo Brinton-Robinson pH 4 nas seguintes condiÃÃes experimentais: freqÃÃncia de 80 e 100 Hz, amplitude 40 e 60 mV; degrau de potencial de 4 mV, para os filmes com 10000 e 20000 ppm respectivamente. A partir dessas condiÃÃes, foram obtidas curvas analÃticas na faixa de concentraÃÃo de 4,97 x 10-7 mol L-1 a 56,6 x 10-7 mol L-1 e calculados os limites de detecÃÃo e quantificaÃÃo para a NFT que foi de 2,69 x 10-8 mol L-1 e 8,96 x 10-8 mol L-1 para o eletrodo com 20000 ppm de dopagem de boro. A aplicabilidade da metodologia foi avaliada em formulaÃÃo farmacÃutica e em urina humana. As porcentagens mÃdias de recuperaÃÃo de NFT foram iguais a: 95,52  2,78 e 96,78  1,88 para os filmes com 10000 e 20000 ppm, respectivamente. EDDB apresentaram bons resultados para quantificaÃÃo de NFT por reduÃÃo eletroquÃmica.<br>This work presents the electroanalytical study for the quantification of nitrofurantoin (NFT) using the boron doped diamond (BDD) films as electrodic material. Preliminary studies using cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed that the electrochemical reduction mechanism of the nitrofurantoin (NFT) involves adsorption and was influenced by pH and by the level of boron doping in the diamond film. BDD electrodes with 5000, 10000 and 20000 ppm of boron doping were used and the pH: 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 were investigated to obtain the best experimental conditions. The experimental results obtained in Brinton-Robinson buffer using square wave voltammetry showed only a totally irreversible process for the NFT in approximately -0.35 V vs. Ag/AgCl/Cl- 3.0 mol L-1. The peak presents dependence with the pH and voltammetric parameters. The best voltammetric responses were obtained in Brinton-Robinson buffer at pH 4 with the following experimental conditions; frequency of 80 and 100 Hz, increment of 40 and 60 mV; potential step of 4 mV. In these conditions, the curves were obtained in the range of analytical concentration between 4.97 x 10-7 mol L-1 to 56.6 x 10-7 mol L-1 and calculated detection and quantification limits for the NFT which were of 8.96 x 10-8 mol L-1 and 2.69 x 10-8 mol L-1, respectively, for the electrodes with 20000 ppm of boron doping. The applicability of the methodology was evaluated in pharmaceutical formulation and human urine. The average percentages of recovery of NFT were: 95,52  2,75 and 96,78  1,88 for films with 10000 and 20000 ppm, respectively. EDDB showed good results for quantification of NFT by electrochemical reduction. The electrode with 20000 ppm of boron doping presents the best electroanalytical answer, showing the minor detection and quantification limited.

This is because of the fast cooling rate it imposes on the system, favoring such type of structure. This work deals with the production of quasycristaline phases (Al60Cu27,5Fe12,5 e Al57Cu27,5Fe12,5B3) via melt-spinning. The alloys were initially cast via induction melting under atmospheric air, with the designed chemical composition of the quasicrystals. Hence, the ribbons were produce by melt-spinning were characterized by means of x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the icosahedral ψ - Al65Cu20Fe15 phase formed in both types of starting compositions. It seams that the boron contributes to stabilize the icosahedral phase.<br>O processo melt-spinning por imprimir altas taxas de resfriamento, é um dos principais meios para a obtenção de ligas com estrutura quasicristalinas, sendo o primeiro método utilizado para produzir materiais quasicristalinos. Neste trabalho utilizou-se este processo para a elaboração das ligas quasicristalinas Al(60-x)Cu25Fe15Bx, Al(60-x)Cu27,5Fe12,5Bx e Al(65-x)Cu20Fe15Bx (x=0 e x=3%at de boro). As ligas foram previamente fabricadas, por fusão, em atmosfera de argônio, em forno à indução, para em seguida serem submetidas ao processo melt-spinning , onde se obteve o material na forma de fita. As amostras foram caracterizadas por difração de raios-x e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Portanto, é importante definir qual o melhor modo de aplicação e fonte de B para o bom desenvolvimento e produtividade do eucalipto, com menor custo possível. Assim, objetivou-se, com este trabalho, comparar o efeito de fontes de B com alta e baixa solubilidade na cultura do eucalipto, bem como a aplicação foliar do micronutriente. O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Renascença, localizada no município de Três Lagoas/MS, com latitude 20o 34' S e longitude 51o 50' O e altitude de aproximadamente 305 m, no período de 02/2012 a 02/2014. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com seis tratamentos e cinco repetições, dispostos em um esquema fatorial de 3 x 2, sendo: 0 kg ha-1 de B, 1 kg ha-1 de B utilizando como fonte o ácido bórico (alta solubilidade, 17% B) ou 1 kg ha-1 de B utilizando como fonte o borogran (baixa solubilidade, 10% B), aplicados no sulco de plantio, com ou sem aplicações de ácido bórico via foliar na dose de 0,5% de ácido bórico na calda com volume de 250 L ha-1. Com a omissão de B via foliar houve incremento em altura de plantas nos tratamentos que receberam a aplicação do micronutriente no plantio, diferindo significativamente da testemunha. Porém, ambas as fontes, independente da solubilidade, apresentaram resultados semelhantes. As duas aplicações de B via foliar foram suficientes para que houvesse incremento em altura de plantas, quando comparadas aos tratamentos que não receberam aplicação de B no plantio. Aos 18 e 24 meses após o plantio foi constatado aumento no teor foliar de B nos tratamentos que receberam aplicação foliar. A aplicação de B no plantio, independente da fonte utilizada, assim como aplicação foliar do elemento, foram suficientes para reduzir os sintomas de deficiência de B. Com relação às fontes ...<br>Abstract: Cerrado soils present low levels of boron being common supplementation of this element through soil and foliar fertilization. Therefore, it is important to define how better mode of application and source for the successful development and productivity of eucalyptus, with possible cost savings. Thus, this study aimed to compare the effect of B sources with high and low solubility applied in soil and high solubility applied on leaf of Eucalyptus spp. The experiment was conducted at farm Renascença, located in Três Lagoas/MS with latitude 20 34 'S and longitude 51 50' W and altitude of approximately 305 m, in 02/2012 to 02/2014. It was used a randomized block design with six treatments and five replications arranged in a factorial scheme 2 x 3, being: 0 kg ha- 1 B, 1 kg ha- 1 B, using boric acid as source (high solubility, 17 % B) or 1 kg ha-1 B, using as source borogran (low solubility, 10 % B), applied at planting, with or without application of boric acid foliar at 0.5% in a volume of 250 Lha-1. With the omission of B foliar there was an increase in plant height in treatments with the application of boron at planting, differing from the control. However, both of these sources, regardless of the solubility, showed similar results. The two foliar applications of B were sufficient for getting an increase in plant height when compared to treatments without B application at planting. At 18 and 24 months after planting there was increased on B foliar content in treatments with foliar application. Applying B at planting, regardless of source, as well as foliar application, were sufficient to reduce the symptoms of B deficiency. Os relatos de deficiências do micronutriente Boro (B) nestas situações têm levado a realização de muitos trabalhos com o objetivo de conhecer melhor os mecanismos envolvidos na absorção e retranslocação deste nutriente, assim como a avaliação de materiais que possam apresentar variabilidade genética quanto à resposta a sua deficiência. O grupo CAGEN em parceria com a empresa Fibria desenvolveu este projeto que visa a busca de SNPs em genes relacionados à absorção e translocação de B. em Eucalyptus. Como resultado da procura de SNPs, nos genes BOR1 e Sorbitol dehydrogenase foram encontrados um total de 54 SNPs sendo que, no gene BOR1, foi localizado 35 SNPs, e destes, 16 foram encontrados em exons e 19 em introns. Distribuídos da seguinte forma, 13 no “primer” B9 e destes dois em exons, 11 no “primer” B10 com sete localizados em exons e 11 encontrados no “primer” B11 com sete deles em exons, das mutações encontradas no gene BOR1, 69% ou 24 do total de 35 SNPs foram substituições por transição e 31% ou 11 dos 35 foram substituições por transversão. This dissertation work focuses on the processability improvement of B4C, especially the compaction and sintering improvement of B4C by applying a Ni-B nanolayer coating on individual B4C particles.
A modified electroless coating procedure was proposed and employed to coat nanometer Ni-B layer onto micron-sized B4C particles. The thickness was able to be tuned and controlled below 100 nm. Key parameters, including the amount of nickel source, the amount of the surface activation agent (PdCl2), the amount of the complexing agent (C2H8N2), and the addition rate of the reducing agent (NaBH4) were studied. When the targeted thickness was 5 nm, a continuous and uniform nanolayer coating was obtained with the optimal condition of individual parameter combined.
Reduction of the as-coated B4C powder in a H2-Ar atmosphere was studied between 400-900ºC to reduce the surface oxidesâ Ni2O3 and B2O3. Reduction at 800ºC in hydrogen atmosphere was found to be the most effective condition to remove oxygen in the coating layer, with Ni2B as the reduction product.
Compaction of the as-received, separated and uncoated, and separated with Ni-B coating B4C powders using uniaxial die compaction and combustion driven compaction (CDC) techniques was studied. CDC technique showed the advantage over the traditional uniaxial die compaction by yielding much higher green density and green strength (73% vs. 53.8% green density for the Ni-B coated B4C). Among compacts obtained from the same technique, Ni-B coated B4C compact yielded the densest packing with crack-free compact surface and the highest strength, demonstrating more bonding between B4C particles provided by Ni-B surface coating.
Sintering of the Ni-B coated B4C in an Ar atmosphere between 1150 - 1600ºC with soaking time of 2 hrs and 10 hrs was studied. Liquid phase was found to form during the sintering process. Density measurement showed that the liquid phase Ni-B formed greatly facilitated B4C densification. Considerable density increase and inter-granular connection was achieved when sintered at 1600ºC for 10 hrs. The density enhancement by Ni-B coating was supported by transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) examination which showed that there was B4C species diffusion into liquid Ni-B phase. This liquid phase enhanced the diffusion of B4C species and formed strong bonding between B4C grains by dissolving small B4C particles and sharp edge and corners of B4C particles. Strength test demonstrated that the Ni-B coating dramatically improved the strength of B4C compacts by yielding a much higher strength of the Ni-B coated samples than the uncoated samples (13.97 vs. 1.79 MPa for the uinaxial die compacted samples, 27.03 vs. 2.21 MPa for the CDC samples). Electrical conductivity Ni-B coated B4C samples was also shown to be improved with the electrical resistivity being reduced from infinite for pure B4C samples to 1.8à 10-3 Ω⠢m for the Ni-B coated samples.
This research work has shown that with the Ni-B coating, B4C densification can start at a temperature as low as 1600ºC via a liquid phase sintering process.<br>Ph. D.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of base saturation and mineral fertilization on crop crambe. Experiments were set in two growing seasons. In the first year were montadsos experiments in pots in the greenhouse and in the year 2010 which evaluated independently, the effect of doses of (N, P, Zn and B). The doses evaluated in mg kg-1 of soil were: N (control, 20, 40 and 80), P (control, 20, 40 and 80), Zn (control, 1, 2, and 4), B (control, 0.5, 1, and 2.) We evaluated the following parameters: root dry weight per plant, shoot dry mass per plant, grain yield per plant and oil content of the grain. In the year 2011, which was the second year of cultivation, were assembled in three experiments to evaluate field conditions, in isolation, in a factorial design the effect of raising the base saturation and nitrogen levels, base saturation and doses Phosphorus and base saturation and potassium levels in the culture of crambe. Each of these experiments was formed by a factorial design (4x3) with 4 replicates totaling 48 installments, the common witness to all nutrients. In each experiment, four levels of saturation and three levels of each mineral fertilizers. The base saturation levels were: (34 - natural soil, 40, 50 and 60%). The mineral fertilizers were evaluated: a) Nitrogen - 1 = control, 2 = 40 kg ha-1 nitrogen, 3 = 80 kg ha-1 nitrogen, b) Phosphorus - 1 = control, 2 = 40 kg ha-1 P2O5, 3 = 80 kg ha-1 P2O5, c) potassium - 1 = control, 2 = 40 kg ha-1 of K2O, 3 = 80 kg ha-1 of K2O. The experimental plots were formed by a rectangle of 9 m2 with 5 lines of planting spacing of 0.45 m between them. The planting was held using the cultivar 'Bright FMS ". The results obtained in greenhouse experiments showed that the addition of nitrogen increased linearly all measured parameters. The addition of phosphorus levels increased linearly the development of root, shoot and grain production. Addition of zinc doses increased linearly shoot growth and grain yield. The addition of boron doses quadratically influenced the development of the root system. The experiments in the field showed that the
addition of nitrogen increased the dry weight of roots and shoots, productivity and no influence on oil content. The phosphorus levels significantly increased all parameters evaluated. Potassium significantly increased all parameters except the oil content. The base saturation influenced all parameters in a linear or quadratic.<br>Ainda não há recomendações específicas para a cultura do crambe em relação a adubação com macro e micronutrientes. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da saturação por bases e adubação mineral na cultura do crambe. Foram instalados experimentos em dois anos de cultivo. No primeiro ano foram instalados experimentos em vasos e em casa de vegetação no ano de 2010 avaliando, de forma independente, o efeito de doses de (N, P, Zn e B). As doses avaliadas em mg

Cada um desses experimentos foi formado por um fatorial (4x3) com 4 repetições totalizando 48 parcelas, sendo a testemunha comum para todos os nutrientes. Em cada experimento foram avaliados quatro níveis de saturação por bases e três níveis de cada uma das adubações minerais. Os níveis de saturação por bases foram: (34 - natural do solo, 40, 50 e 60 %). As adubações minerais avaliadas foram: a) Nitrogênio - 1=testemunha; 2= 40 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio; 3 = 80 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio, b) Fósforo - 1= testemunha; 2= 40 kg ha-1 de P2O5; 3= 80 kg ha-1 de P2O5, c) potássio - 1=testemunha; 2= 40 kg ha-1 de K2O; 3= 80 kg ha-1 de K2O. As parcelas experimentais foram formadas por um retângulo de 9 m2 com 5 linhas de plantio com espaçamento entre elas de 0,45m. O plantio foi realizado no dia 08/03/2011 utilizando a cultivar “FMS Brilhante”. Os resultados obtidos nos experimentos de casa de vegetação mostraram que a adição das doses de nitrogênio elevou de forma linear todos os parâmetros avaliados. A adição das doses de fósforo elevou de forma linear o desenvolvimento do sistema radicular, da parte aérea e a produção de grãos. A adição das doses de zinco elevou de forma linear desenvolvimento da parte aérea e a produção de grãos. A adição das doses de boro influenciou de forma quadrática o desenvolvimento do sistema radicular. Os experimentos em condições de campo mostraram que a adição das doses de nitrogênio aumentou a massa seca do sistema radicular e da parte aérea, a produtividade e não influenciou no teor de óleo. As doses de fósforo elevaram significativamente todos os parâmetros avaliados. O potássio elevou significativamente todos os parâmetros avaliados com exceção do teor de óleo. A saturação por bases influenciou todos os parâmetros avaliados de forma linear ou quadrática.

Neste trabalho foi realizada a síntese de amidas, bem como de ácidos e ésteres borônicos, derivados dos aminoácidos L-cistina e L-cisteína, através de rota sintética simples, curta e de baixo custo, com o intuito de busca e a identificação de novo(s) inibidor(es) do proteassomo 20S. Esta classe de compostos possui estrutura que permite a inserção de diversos grupos funcionais, o que confere versatilidade e a construção de biblioteca de compostos que contém partes hidrofílicas e hidrofóbicas importantes para posterior avaliação inibitória. Para tanto, empregou-se rota sintética química convencional e rota biocatalisada para a formação da ligação amida. Os compostos derivados de L-cisteína foram obtidos via síntese clássica de peptídeos a qual forneceu os compostos desejados em rendimentos de até 85%. Por outro lado, tentativas de obtenção das amidas via biocatálise não se mostraram efetivas. Já amidas derivadas de L-cistina foram obtidas em rendimentos de até 79%, via síntese tradicional e até 100% de conversão através de rota biocatalítica. A inserção do átomo de boro nas estruturas se deu utilizando-se metodologias sintéticas já bem estabelecidas na literatura. Os ésteres borônicos derivados de L-cisteína foram obtidos em bons rendimentos (até 78%), enquanto que não foi possível obter-se compostos de boro derivados de L-cistina. Por sua vez, os compostos contendo ácido borônico na estrutura foram sintetizados via reação de hidrólise dos respectivos ésteres borônicos, em rendimentos moderados (até 34%). Após a obtenção dos compostos contendo grupamentos organoboro realizou-se avaliação inibitória dos mesmos frente ao proteassomo 20S. Valores de IC50 iguais a 52 µM foram obtidos para composto derivado de L-cisteína contendo grupamento éster borônico, que se mostraram inibidores moderados e reversíveis. Ácidos borônicos se mostraram sem capacidade de inibir o proteassomo 20S. Adicionalmente, realizaram-se estudos de modelagem molecular com a finalidade de elucidar os resultados obtidos experimentalmente. Inicialmente realizaram-se cálculos de modelagem molecular através da realização de docking de alguns compostos e após geração de modelo farmacofórico. De maneira geral observou-se que os inibidores derivados da L-cisteína não ocupam a mesma cavidade que o fármaco bortezomibe, o que pode explicar a diferença na atividade dos compostos frente à inibição do proteassomo 20S. Também se observou que, tendo-se a interação dos inibidores com a enzima, a vizinhança do átomo de boro tem grande influência na capacidade inibitória, uma vez que estes grupamentos determinam qual a região da cavidade do proteassomo 20S será ocupada pelo inibidor.<br>In our study, amides, boronic acids and esters derivatives from L-cysteine and L-cysteine were synthesized by simple, short and inexpensive synthetic route, in order to search for new inhibitor(s) of the 20S proteasome. This class of compounds has a structure that allows inclusion of various functional groups, giving it versatility and allowing the construction of library compounds containing hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, important for further evaluation. To this end, we used conventional chemical synthetic route and biocatalysis for peptide bond formation. The compounds derived from L-cysteine were obtained by classical synthesis of peptides which provided the desired compounds up to 85% yields. On the other hand, attempts to obtain the amides via biocatalysis were not effective. However, amides derived from L-cystine were obtained with up to 79% yields via chemical synthesis and conversion up to 100% using biocatalytic route. The insertion of the boron atom in the structures was possible using synthetic methodologies well established in literature. Boronic esters derived from L-cysteine were obtained in good yields (up to 78%), whereas it was not possible to obtain boron compounds derived from L-cystine. In turn, compounds containing boronic acids in the structure were synthesized by hydrolysis reaction of the respective boronic esters in moderate yields (up to 34%). With organoboron compounds in hand, we turned our attention to inhibitory assessment against the 20S proteasome. IC50 up to 52 µM were obtained when L-cysteine boronic ester derivatives were evaluated. These compounds are moderate and reversible inhibitors. L-cysteine boronic acids derivatives have shown not ability to inhibit the 20S proteasome. Additionally, molecular modeling studies were carried out in order to elucidate the results obtained experimentally. Initially molecular modeling calculations were carried out by performing docking experiments of some compounds. Generation of pharmacophoric model calculations was also executed. In general, it was observed that inhibitors derived from L-cysteine do not occupy the same cavity that drug bortezomib, which may explain the difference in the activity of compounds against the inhibition of 20S proteasome. We also observed that, with the interaction of inhibitors and enzyme, the side chains around boron atom has a great influence on inhibitory capacity, since these groups determine which region of the 20S proteasome cavity is occupied by the inhibitor.

As amostras foram tratadas termicamente numa temperatura de 450°C por um período de 3 h. Foi feito o estudo estrutural, térmico e óptico do sistema vítreo a partir das técnicas de Difratometria de Raios-X, Espectroscopias FT-IR e Raman, Análise Térmica Diferencial, Absorção óptica; Índice de refração e Determinação da densidade. O trabalho em questão tem como objetivo sintetizar uma matriz vítrea hospedeira que apresente boas características estruturais, térmicas e ópticas com potencial para aplicações tecnológicas. O índice de refração das amostras vítreas ZBT varia de acordo com a composição do material, a concentração com 0 Te (%wt) apresentou índice de refração de 1,48, enquanto que para concentração 50 Te Te (%wt) o índice de refração é de 1,84. Este aumento no índice de refração potencializa o material vítreo para aplicações ópticas. Tratamentos térmicos acima da Tg foram feitos a fim de estudar o comportamento térmico, em termos de estabilidade térmica e cristalização do vidro. Os vidros apresentaram boa estabilidade térmica, podendo ser aplicados em fibras ópticas. The samples were thermally treated at temperature of 450° C for 3 h. Structural, thermal and optical analysis of the vitreous system were carried out by of X-ray Diffraction, FT-IR and Raman Spectroscopy, Differential Thermal Analysis, Optical Absorption, Index of refraction and Determination of density techniques. The work in question aims to synthesize a host glass matrix that presents good structural, thermal and optical characteristics with potential technological applications. The refractive index of the ZBT glass samples varies according to the composition of the material, the concentration with 0 Te (% wt) had a refractive index of 1.48, whereas for the concentration 50 Te Te (% wt) the refractive index is 1.84. This increase in the refractive index enhances the vitreous material for optical applications. Thermal treatments above the Tg were done in order to study the thermal behavior in terms of thermal stability and glass crystallization. The glasses presented good thermal stability and could be applied in optical fibers. This thesis undertakes the development, characterization and optimization of boron diffusion for silicon solar cells. Heavy diffusions (sheet resistance < 40 Ohm/square) to form a back surface field, and light diffusions (sheet resistance > 100 Ohm/square) to form oxide-passivated emitters were developed. Test structures and solar cells were fabricated to assess uniformity, lifetime and recombination effects due to the light and heavy boron diffusions. It was found that the growth of a thin ~200 ??, thermal oxide, during stabilization ??? immediately prior to the boron diffusion - was required to maintain high lifetime and reduce surface recombination (reducing the emitter saturation current density) for all boron diffusions. The heavy boron diffusion process was incorporated into the single side buried contact solar cell processing sequence. The solar cells fabricated had both boron diffused and Al/Si alloyed P+ regions for comparison. This research conclusively showed that boron diffused solar cells had significantly higher open circuit voltage compared to Al/Si alloyed devices. Fabrication of n-type solar cells, and their subsequent characterization by overlayed secondary electron image and the electron beam induced current map showed that the Al/Si alloy varied in depth from 5 to 25 micrometers deep. Methodology and characterization for light, oxide-passivated boron diffusions are also presented. This study yielded boron diffused emitters (sheet resistance > 100 Ohm/square) with low emitter saturation current. It was observed that this was possible only when the thermal oxidation after the boron diffusion was minimal, less than 1,000 ??. This was due to the segregation effect of boron with oxide, decreasing the surface concentration that in turn decreased the electric field repulsion of electrons from the surface. Device modelling of n-type solar cells is presented where the parameters of the modelling include the results of the light, oxide-passivated boron diffusions. This modelling shows n-type-base material with light oxide-passivated boron diffusion has higher potential conversion efficiency than forming a solar cell from phosphorous diffused p-type material.

Aquetsa tesi descriu el treball realitzat amb reactius que contenen enllaços bor-sofre o bor-seleni. Aquest reactius s’han fet servir en reaccions de tioboració i selenoboració de substrats amb insaturacions conjugades a cetones o esters i en reaccions d’inserció amb grups diazo per a sintetitzar nous compostos organosulfurats i organoselenats. La tesi es divideix en quatre capítols. El primer d’ell és una breu introducció al compostos organosulfurats i organoselenats, parlant sobre les seves principals aplicacions i els mètodes per sintetitzar-los més representatius fins al moment. En aquest primer capítol també és parla de la síntesis dels reactius de bor-sofre i bor-seleni i les reaccions en les que s’han fet servir. El segon capítol parla de la reactivitat dels compostos de bor-sofre amb cetones i aldehids α,β-insaturats. S’ha observat que el propi grup carboxil és capaç d’activar el reactiu i fer entrar la unitat de sofre en la posició beta. El tercer capítol parla de la reacció amb triples enllaços conjugat a cetones i esters per sintetitzar vinil sulfats i vinil selenats. Aquesta mateixa reacció en presència d’una fosfina permet obtenir compostos anti-3,4-selenoborats que són precursors de compostos amb el grup seleni en la posició alfa. The thesis is divided in four chapters. The first is a brief introduction to the organosulfides and organoselenides compounds, reporting its main applications and its more representative methods of synthesis. The first chapter also reported the synthesis of the boron-sulphur and boron-selenium reagents and the reactions where they have been used. The second chapter is about the reactivity of the compounds of boron-sulphur with α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes. It has observed that the carboxyl group is able to activate the B-S reagent and deliver the sulphur unit in the beta position. The third chapter shows the reactivity with triple bonds conjugated to ketones and esters to synthesise vinyl sulphates and vinyl selenates. The same reaction in presence of a phosphine allow to obtain anti-3,4-selenoborated compounds that they are precursors of compounds with the selenium moiety in the alpha position. The last chapter is about the insertion reactions of diazo compounds into the boron-sulphur bond that allow to obtain molecules very functionalized with groups Si, B, S and H than due to its different chemical behaviour can be further functionalized.

Neste trabalho, foi avaliada a reatividade de compostos orgânicos contendo boro frente a reações catalisadas por enzimas. Diferentes exemplos de álcoois secundários quirais contendo boro foram acetilados enantiosseletivamente pela lipase de Candida antarctica (CALB). Todas as reações ocorreram com excelente enantiosseletividade (E >200) e ambos os produtos acetilados, bem como os álcoois remanescentes foram obtidos com alto excesso enantiomérico (ee >99%). Além da resolução cinética enzimática, foi avaliado também o processo de resolução cinética dinâmica quimio-enzimática, empregando complexos de rutênio como agentes de racemização. Após estabelecer as condições adequadas para a reação, foi possível obter o produto acetilado de configuração-(R) com 83% de conversão, mantendo a enantiosseletividade observada na reação de resolução cinética enzimática. Como extensão ao trabalho realizado com os álcoois contendo boro, foi estudada a resolução cinética de aminas primárias quirais contendo boro. Foram avaliadas diversas condições reacionais para alcançar a máxima resolução cinética destas aminas via acilação enantiosseletiva catalisada pela lipase CALB. Excelente enantiosseletividade (E >200) e altos excessos enantioméricos (até >99%) foram obtidos utilizando acetato de etila tanto como reagente doador de acila como solvente da reação. Adicionalmente, foi investigada a reação de biorredução de cetonas pró-quirais contendo boro. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos com as enzimas álcool desidrogenases (ADHs) purificadas dos microorganismos Rhodococcus ruber e Lactobacillus brevis. A ADH de R. ruber (ADH-A) promoveu a biorredução das cetonas aos respectivos álcoois de configuração-(R) com excelente enantiosseletividade (ee >99%), enquanto a ADH de L. brevis (ADH-LB) catalisou a redução de alguns exemplos de cetonas aos respectivos álcoois de configuração-(S), também com excelente enantiosseletividade.<br>In this work, was evaluated the reactivity of boron-containing organic compounds in enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Different examples of boron-containing chiral secondary alcohols were resolved by enantioselective acetylation mediated by lipase from Candida. antarctica (CALB). All reactions showed excellent enantioselectivities (E >200) and both remaining substrates and acetylated product were obtained in high enantiomeric excesses (up to >99%). Besides the enzymatic kinetic resolution, the chemoenzymatic dynamic kinetic resolution was also evaluated, using ruthenium complexes as racemization agents. After establishing the best conditions, the acetylated (R)-product was obtained with 83% conversion, maintaining the high enantioselectivity observed in the enzymatic kinetic resolution. As an expansion of work with boron-containing alcohols, the kinetic resolution of boron-containing chiral amines was studied. Several reaction conditions were studied to achieve the kinetic resolution of boron-containing amines via enantioselective acylation mediated by CAL-B. Excellent enantioselectivity (E >200) and high enantiomeric excess (up to >99%) of both the remaining amines and amides were obtained using ethyl acetate as both acyl donor and the reaction solvent. Additionally, the bioreduction of pro-chiral boron-containing ketones was investigated. The best results were obtained with purified alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) from Rhodococcus ruber and Lactobacillus brevis. The ADH from R. ruber (ADH-A) mediated the bioreduction of ketones to their respective (R)-alcohols with excellent enantioselectivity (ee >99%), while the ADH from L. brevis (ADH-LB) catalyzed the reduction of some ketones to their respective (S)-alcohols, also with excellent enantioselectivity (ee >99%).

As pentoses são subprodutos de vários rejeitos agrícolas tais como palha de arroz, palha e sabugo de milho, casca de aveia, bagaço da cana-de-açúcar, caroço de algodão, resíduos de madeira e outros, de onde se pode obter, por digestão com ácido forte, o furfural, e dele, por hidrogenação, o álcool furfurílico (FFA). A polimerização do FFA conduzindo a um produto inerte, resistente a corrosão, que tem sido utilizado principalmente como revestimento de mesas e bancadas de laboratório e de tanques industriais, é um produto negro que apresenta estrutura fortemente intercruzada. Porém, seu relativo alto custo tem constituído uma barreira para que suas aplicações se popularizem. Com o aproveitamento de resíduos industriais da produção de etanol, óleo de arroz, algodão, milho, e da indústria madeireira, espera-se a redução de seu custo de produção e, consequentemente, a ampliação de seu campo de aplicações principalmente por tratar-se de um polímero natural não derivado do petróleo. Por outro lado, o país enfrenta sérias dificuldades no campo habitacional, uma delas sendo o elevado custo dos materiais de construção. Viabilizando-se o emprego de madeiras de reflorestamento para emprego em construção civil e industrial, por exemplo, aumentando sua resistência ao ataque de fungos e de insetos, a propagação da chama e a variação dimensional, proporciona-se um número maior de moradias sem, contudo, promover o desmatamento de reservas de madeiras nobres. Neste trabalho tem-se como objetivos a obtenção de compósitos de madeira e polímero que apresentem vantagens sobre a madeira de reflorestamento sem tratamento, e o estudo de um meio de fixar o bom usando o álcool furfurílico para que as propriedades de ambos sejam combinadas e melhoradas. Impregnou-se duas espécies de coníferas muito populares, uma no Brasil e outra no Japão, com álcool furfurílico em combinação com compostos de boro e testou-se algumas de suas propriedades. Espécies de Coníferas \"Japanese cedar\' (Cryptomena japonica D. Don.) - o sugi, e (Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis) - pinus - foram impregnadas com álcool furfurílico (FFA) pelo processo vácuo-encharcamento seguido da cura do FFA sob aquecimento. Compostos de boro: ácido bórico, borato de amônia e biborato de amônia foram adicionados a solução de impregnação. Espécies impregnadas foram submetidas aos testes de eficiência anti-inchamento, resistência aos térmitas, resistência aos microrganismos, resistência a inflamabilidade e resistência as intempéries. Ao lado destes testes, os resíduos das soluções submetidas aos ciclos de lixiviação de acordo com as normas padrões JIS 9201 (1992) foram analisados através de cromatografia iônica com o objetivo de estudar métodos de fixação do boro na madeira. Os resultados mostraram que a resina de FFA confere a madeira alta estabilidade dimensional. Resultados semelhantes são obtidos quando FFA é combinada com compostos de boro. A mobilidade do bom mostrou diferentes comportamentos em comparação com o tratamento com o ácido bórico, embora o boro ainda seja Iixiviável. A madeira tratada com FFA combinada com compostos de boro apresentou grande resistência a ataques de térmitas e à deterioração biológica quando não submetida a lixiviação. Quando lixiviadas a resistência biológica diminui consideravelmente mas ainda assim é maior que a da madeira sem tratamento ou da tratada somente com ácido bórico. O tratamento mostrou que a combinação aumentou a resistência da madeira contra a queima sem chama. A queima produz pouca fumaça e cinzas. As combinações de tratamento não se mostraram eficazes para fixar a cor durante a exposição as condições climáticas<br>Pentosans are by-products of many agricultural crops such as rice, com and oat husks, comcobs, sugar cane bagasse, cotton seeds, wood wastes, etc. By digesting these by-products with strong acid furfural can be produced, which, in its turn, can be transformed into furfuryl alcohol through hydrogenation. Polymerization of furfuryl alcohol transforms it into an inert corrosion-resistant product that is used as a coating material for laboratory tables, workbenches and industrial tanks. Its relatively high cost, however, has so far been an obstacle to its widespread application. By taking advantage of industrial waste from ethanol distilleries and from the rice, cotton, com oil and wood industries, it is expected to reduce the cost of furfuryl alcohol production and, thus, to increase its applications. This becomes an increasingly relevant objective when one considers the future scarcity of petroleum. Brazil is also beset by a variety of housing-related problems, one of which is the high cost of construction materials. Increasing the resistance of reforested wood against termite and fungi attacks and enhancing its fireproof and anti-swelling characteristics will enable the country to increase housing and preclude further deforestation of hardwood forests. Present work discusses the work involved in developing a wood-polymer composite with particular characteristics for improving the dimensional stability of wood, increasing its resistance against termite and fungi attacks, decreasing its flammability and enhancing its weathering resistance, for proposing the utilization of furfuryl alcohol as boron fixation agent. Two species of very popular softwoods, one of them in Brazil, pine and the other in Japan, sugi were impregnated with poli-FFA. Sapwood blocks of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don.) and Caribbean pitch pine (Pinus caribaea varohondurensis) were impregnated with furfuryl alcohol (FFA) by a vacuum-impregnation process followed by curing of FFA under heating. Boron compounds: boric acid, ammonium borate and ammonium biborate were mixed in the impregnation solution. Impregnated specimens were submitted to an anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) test, exposed to attack by termites and microorganisms, and subjected to a flame resistance and natural weathering test. Boron leachability was determined, along with ten cycles of weathering, according to JIS 9201 (1992), by ion chromatography (IC). Results indicated that FFA imparted high dimensional stability to wood when mixed with boron compounds. Boron mobility showed differentiated behavior in comparison to treatment with boric acid alone, although boron was still leachable. Wood specimens treated with a FFA-boron compound combination were quite resistant to termite attacks and to biological deterioration when they were not submitted to leaching cycles. When were submitted to leaching cycles, their biological resistance decreased significantly; however, it was still higher than in untreated wood or in wood treated only with boric acid. Sabe-se que o boro é um nutriente fortemente adsorvido nas partículas minerais do solo. Objetivou-se com este trabalho submeter amostras de solo de uma determinada área de estudo, na qual foi cultivada soja por três anos consecutivos e posteriormente cultivado algodão, a diferentes métodos de extração de boro, a fim de se estabelecer correlações entre a dose de boro na planta, a dose de nutriente aplicada e o teor de boro no solo disponível às plantas e, ainda, com a produtividade da soja. Amostras de solo, cultivadas com soja, coletadas por ocasião da condução do experimento no campo, foram analisadas quanto à concentração de B extraída pelos métodos: água quente modificado com solução de BaCl2 1,25 g L-1 (recomendado e chamado de método da água quente pelo IAC); água quente modificado com solução de CaCl2 0,01 mol L-1,a quente e água quente tradicional (o qual é preconizado por muitos autores como o método oficial) para dessa forma, tentar quantificar a real disponibilidade de boro neste solo, caracterizado como um LATOSSOLO VERMELHO AMARELO (LVA), possibilitando a determinação de um nível crítico. Ainda, durante o período de condução do trabalho, foi feito um estudo de adsorção de B nas amostras, e um estudo do comportamento da lixiviação do nutriente em colunas de solo, procurando verificar o efeito das adubações na dinâmica do nutriente. Os métodos do BaCl2 e...<br>In some conditions, doesn't have obtained correlations among boron content in soil, boron extracted by hot water, boron content in plants and soybean productivity in a region (Campo Novo do Parecis) of the state of Mato Grosso/Brazil. This work was carried out to submit soil samples from determined area of study where was tillage soybean for three subsequent years and after tillage cotton, to differents extraction methods by boron with the aim to establish correlations among, amount of boron content in plants, amount of nutrient putted in soil, boron content in soil disponible to plants and the productivity. Soil samples obtained during the conduction of experiment on field were analyzed to predict the amount of boron in soil by the methods: hot water modified with BaCl2 solution (recommended and called by hot water from IAC - Instituto Agronômico de Campinas/SP-Brazil), hot water modified CaCl2 0,01 mol L-1 solution and hot water traditional (which is preconized by many authors like the official method) to this way try to quantify the real situation of boron disponibility in this soil, characterized like a Yellow Red Latossol, to take the determination of a critical level. During the conduction period of this work was made an adsorption study in the samples, and still a study of boron leaching behavior in soil columns, to verify fertilizer effect in nutrient dynamic. The extraction method with CaCl2 presented positive and significative correlation with boron present in soybean leaves on three subsequent farm work years. Escolheu-se um tema específico para o uso dessa tecnologia, que é a Educação Ambiental (EA), ou melhor dizendo, a possibilidade de inserção da Dimensão Ambiental no Currículo do Ensino Fundamental e Médio. Para isso o tema transversal meio ambiente é tratado dentro de uma abordagem interdisciplinar, em que se utilizou técnicas quanti-qualitativas que levem à reflexão-ação. O caminho metodológico para esta ampliação da representação a respeito da dimensão ambiental no processo educacional foi a organização de uma pesquisa com 15 professoras/es de três escolas do Ensino Fundamental e Médio, dos municípios de Itajaí e Bombinhas (SC). Estes, que participam de um projeto-piloto, o Projeto EducAdo, - Educação Ambiental em Áreas Costeiras usando a Web como suporte - uma proposta metodológica de trabalho pedagógico, centrada nos princípios da cooperação, autonomia e interação entre os "aprendentes " (professoras/es participantes Û docentes Û pesquisador). O Projeto foi uma experiência de parceria entre a Universidade do Vale do Itajaí - UNIVALI, Secretaria do Estado da Educação de Santa Catarina (SED), Núcleo de Tecnologia Educacional (NTE) da 13ª Coordenadoria Regional de Educação e Secretaria Municipal de Educação de Itajaí (SMED). Foi criado um espaço educacional presencial, utilizando como ferramenta principal um Ambiente de Aprendizagem virtual. O projeto foi dividido em três etapas. Na primeira e segunda etapas do projeto, na parte presencial, foram propiciadas ao grupo de aprendentes experiências de aprendizagem, as atividades de inserção pedagógica (AIP) - oficinas, atividades de percepção e sensibilização e saídas de campo - juntamente com uma fundamentação teórica (FT) básica sobre EA e no uso das TIC, levando à aquisição de informações e conhecimentos sobre problemas ambientais das áreas costeiras no litoral norte de Santa Catarina, onde encontram-se as escolas selecionadas. No que diz respeito ao uso das TIC, foi criado um ambiente virtual experimental, também chamado de EducAdo, que utiliza a Web como suporte para o trabalho pedagógico, no fornecimento de informações e conhecimentos sobre a problemática ambiental na região. Ainda foi usado como recurso para que o grupo de aprendentes construíssem e editassem cooperativamente suas próprias páginas Web (homepage). O conteúdo dessas páginas consistia em relatórios em hipertexto com o conteúdo das informações e conhecimentos adquiridos durante as atividades realizadas na parte presencial, as quais foram inseridas no site criado para o Projeto, que constitui o ambiente virtual, propriamente dito. É também um site de registro das memórias das atividades e da fundamentação teórica relacionadas à Educação Ambiental e Informática Educativa, desenvolvidas durante o Projeto. O site está disponível em http://www.cehcom.univali.br/educado. Com a pesquisa investigaram-se também as representações do grupo de aprendentes sobre a problemática ambiental e o uso das TIC, além dos problemas e vantagens da utilização deste Ambiente de Aprendizagem na formação continuada de professoras/es para o Ensino Fundamental e Médio, a partir das trocas cooperativas de informações e conhecimentos e da interação entre as/os aprendentes; como também para apontar e procurar superar suas limitações. Na terceira etapa do Projeto, os professores estão desempenhando o papel de multiplicadores junto a alunos e professores de cada escola, desenvolvendo Projetos Cooperativos voltados às questões ambientais da mesma e da comunidade, usando as TIC como suporte, utilizando assim as salas informatizadas das respectivas escolas. Com base nas avaliações realizadas ao longo da pesquisa, constatou-se que como conseqüência das intervenções pedagógicas realizadas ao longo do Projeto, ou seja, da ação conjunta do conteúdo da FT, bem como da ação e reflexão das/dos aprendentes sobre os problemas ambientais da região pelas AIP. Mudanças conceituais significativas ocorreram nas representações iniciais das/os aprendentes Estas mudanças foram mediadas também pelo ambiente de aprendizagem do EducAdo, gerando, como conseqüência, uma maior conscientização no que diz respeito à participação efetiva na minimização/resolução de problemas ambientais da região; às possibilidades de inserção da Dimensão Ambiental no Currículo, e do próprio uso das TIC como suporte ao trabalho pedagógico. Além disso, aprenderam a conviver com desafios cognitivos e novas situações de aprendizagem relacionadas à EA e as TIC; ao diagnóstico, planejamento e trabalho cooperativo em grupos interdisciplinares, visando a resolução ou minimização de problemas locais de suas escolas e comunidades.
