Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Francesco Borromini, one of the great geniuses of Baroque architecture, was tormented and solitary, and was increasingly frustrated by the fame and success of his rival, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Borromini was an unhappy man, constantly dogged by disaster, quarrelling even with his best patrons and closest friends. In the culmination of one of the fits of depression that overcame the architect more and more frequently as his life progressed, Borromini literally fell on his own sword; he lingered in excruciating pain for 24 hours before dying. Largely forgotten, his architecture has again been recognized since the twentieth century as the creation of genius. We try to describe the personality and suicide of this pessimist giant of architecture.

Abstract:
The creation of knotted, woven and linked molecular structures is an exciting and growing field in synthetic chemistry. Presented here is a description of an extended family of structures related to the classical `Borromean rings', in which no two rings are directly linked. These structures may serve as templates for the designed synthesis of Borromean polycatenanes. Links of n components in which no two are directly linked are termed `n-Borromean' [Liang & Mislow (1994). J. Math. Chem. 16, 27–35]. In the classic Borromean rings the components are three rings (closed loops). More generally, they may be a finite number of periodic objects such as graphs (nets), or sets of strings related by translations as in periodic chain mail. It has been shown [Chamberland & Herman (2015). Math. Intelligencer, 37, 20–25] that the linking patterns can be described by complete directed graphs (known as tournaments) and those up to 13 vertices that are vertex-transitive are enumerated. In turn, these lead to ring-transitive (isonemal) n-Borromean rings. Optimal piecewise-linear embeddings of such structures are given in their highest-symmetry point groups. In particular, isonemal embeddings with rotoinversion symmetry are described for three, five, six, seven, nine, ten, 11, 13 and 14 rings. Piecewise-linear embeddings are also given of isonemal 1- and 2-periodic polycatenanes (chains and chain mail) in their highest-symmetry setting. Also the linking of n-Borromean sets of interleaved honeycomb nets is described.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the right conditions, removing one particle from a multipartite bound state can make it fall apart. This feature, known as the "Borromean property", has been recently demonstrated experimentally in Efimov states. One could expect that such peculiar behavior should be linked with the presence of strong inter-particle correlations. However, any exploration of this connection is hindered by the complexity of the physical systems exhibiting the Borromean property. To overcome this problem, we introduce a simple dynamical toy model based on a discrete-time quantum walk of many interacting particles. We show that the particles described by it need to exhibit the Greenberger-Horne-Zeillinger (GHZ) entanglement to form Borromean bound states. As this type of entanglement is very prone to particle losses, our work demonstrates an intuitive link between correlations and Borromean properties of the system. Moreover, we discuss our findings in the context of the formation of composite particles.

Abstract:
We refine Matveev's result asserting that any two closed oriented 3-manifolds can be related by a sequence of borromean surgeries if and only if they have isomorphic first homology groups and linking pairings. Indeed, a borromean surgery induces a canonical isomorphism between the first homology groups of the involved 3-manifolds, which preserves the linking pairing. We prove that any such isomorphism is induced by a sequence of borromean surgeries. As an intermediate result, we prove that a given algebraic square finite presentation of the first homology group of a 3-manifold, which encodes the linking pairing, can always be obtained from a surgery presentation of the manifold.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to offer a satisfactory formal and iconographical explanation for S. Ivo and its problematical elements. Although the church has been recognized for some time as Borromini's approximation of the ancient Temple of Solomon, its winding, shell-like spire does not fit into this interpretation-or any other yet proposed. The paper concentrates on a description of the Temple of Wisdom that has never before been linked to S. Ivo and shows how its apparently disparate components could be combined in one and the same building. This description appears in the Psychomachia by Prudentius (c. 405 A. D.), a poem about the battle between the Vices and Virtues. Upon the battle's happy conclusion, the Virtues build a temple to Wisdom. Prudentius's eloquent description of this temple is examined in detail, and aspects that may have appealed to Borromini are brought out and compared to S. Ivo. A Baroque masterpiece, the church incorporates Early Christian features in layout, construction, and decoration. Some of these features almost seem to be clues pointing to the building's origin in the Early Christian past, an era held up throughout the Counter Reformation as Christianity's Golden Age.

Abstract:
Francesco Borromini's renovation of the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome is one of his grandest conceptions. It remains frustratingly incomplete, however, because Borromini was not able to vault the nave as he had hoped. The nature of his design for a vault has been much discussed. The only surviving visual evidence consists of a drawing in a private collection, not heretofore studied in depth. It shows a section through the basilica with two superimposed roofing structures, a flat ceiling and a coffered barrel vault. Comparison to other Borromini drawings for the renovation of the basilica establishes that the drawing is from Borromini's own hand and shows an intermediate stage of his design, probably dating from April 1647. In conjunction with recently published documents from the Spada archive, the drawing demonstrates that as of mid-1647 the vaulting of the basilica was seen as a two-phase process: the existing flat ceiling was to be retained for the present, but the basilica was prepared to support a vault in the future. It also shows that at the Lateran Borromini was consciously emulating not only Michelangelo's Saint Peter's but also Alberti's Sant'Andrea. The prominent use of a classical form on a monumental scale, especially striking in view of Borromini's reputation as an anticlassicist, is attributable to the unique nature of the commission, Borromini's only basilica. The design shows Borromini's boldness in seeking to accommodate the classical form to his own personal concerns for skeletal structure and new effects of motion and light.

We obtain qualitative relations between the spatial extension of the three-body bound state, its energy, and the scattering lengths in the subsystems.

Abstract:
We exploit the possibility of new configurations in three-body halo nuclei, Samba type (the neutron-core form a bound system) as a doorway to Borromean systems. The nuclei 12 Be , 15 B , 23 N and 27 F are of such nature, in particular 23 N with a half-life of 37.7 s and a halo radius of 6.07 fm is an excellent example of Samba-halo configuration. The fusion below the barrier of the Samba halo nuclei with heavy targets could reveal the so far elusive enhancement and a dominance of one-neutron over two-neutron transfers, in contrast to what was found recently for the Borromean halo nucleus 6 He +238 U .

Abstract:
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' Tenth Symphony was given its premiere by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus at the Barbican on 2 February 2014. The work concerns itself with both the architecture and the death of Francesco Borromini; while perhaps an unusual subject for a symphony, there is precedence in Maxwell Davies's work, as the same man is the subject of his Third Naxos Quartet, and the Third Symphony takes Brunelleschi as its subject. Maxwell Davies has suggested direct links between Borromini's creations and his own – in the programme note we discover that ‘the precise parameters and proportions by which a huge basilica of Borromini's was constructed’ control portions of the work – and indeed the architect's presence pervades the symphony. As well as guiding Maxwell Davies's constructive parameters in the instrumental movements, Borromini is the subject of the chorus' music throughout and almost becomes a character in an operatic scena in the final passage, as he plays out his own suicide to the backdrop of the chorus intoning the names of his most celebrated work. Yet this new symphony rarely betrays its rigorous origins, and aside from passages for percussion mimetic of building activity (hammers, vibraphone, anvils and so on) many aspects in fact suggest a softer, smoother musical language.
