Abstract:
Over the years, gaming has developed rapidly from simple pixel-based experiences to fully blown three-dimensional worlds. As developing technologies improve, so does the complexity and flexibility of what can be created. Encounters, along with all aspects of any gaming experience, have evolved along with the technologies that create them. These intense combat instances, often times referred to as “bosses”, represent a chance for the developer to challenge player skill, cooperation, and coordination. In addition to being major challenges, encounters also allow players to feel a sense of progression as they learn and adapt to mechanics incorporated within an encounter’s design. Eventually these mechanics are mastered, and surmounted to a lasting sense of accomplishment and success. This project details a personal process of encounter design from initial conception to eventual player testing, along with design choices, outside influences, and development methods. These were ultimately utilized in an attempt to create an engaging and successful boss encounter.

The present document is a detailed valuation of Hugo Boss AG in accordance with ISEG's Master in Finance Final Work Project. The Equity Research follows the format recommended by the CFA Institute (Pinto, Henry, Robinson and Stowe, 2010). The information presented in this report only reflects public information issued by or about Hugo Boss AG until 30th of September 2019, thus any event or circumstance after this date is not considered. Hugo Boss AG is a Fashion Company known worldwide by its luxurious products, mainly apparel products. Hugo Boss AG was the company choosen to become the subject of the present master thesis final project, once the author is interested in the Personal Luxury Market. By performing an in-depth analysis on the company's management, financials, and risks as well as overall market and macroeconomics conditions, several assumptions were made to proper estimate the Hugo Boss AG price target by the year-end of 2020. With the use of the Free Cash Flow to the Firm Method from the Discounted Cash Flow Models, we estimate a price target of €66 for 2020YE. This will lead to an upside potential of around 27% when comparing with price of €49.15 from 30th of September 2019, meaning a BUY recommendation with Medium Risk. Complementary valuation methodologies were used to support our recommendation.

Abstract:
My research focuses on the extraction of the signal imprinted by the BAO on the galaxy distribution. The BAO feature is a bump at -150Mpcin the two-points correlation function of the matter in the Universe. This corresponds to maximum distance travelled by acoustic waves in the matter-radiation fluid during the period from matter/radiation equality to their decoupling at z-1100. An excess density at a radius of 150 Mpc was left after decoupling around each dark-matter density peak. The final goal of my work is to perform a complete analysis of the data available up to summer 2011 in SDSS III/BOSS in order to give constraints on isotropised distance DV and constraint the dark energy equation of state parameters wo and Wa. With such observations, one wants to check if the data is consistent with the so-called cosmological constant (corresponding to wo= -1 and wa= 0) or if the dark energy equation of state shows a time evolution (wa= 0) pointing to more complex dark energy scenarios. I studied and tested data analysis tools with log normal simulations and the public DR7 to achieve this goal. I studied the redshift distortions with simulations in the linear regime and I developed a optimization method for the correlation function estimator. The second part of my my work was focused in the analysis of BOSS data. There are to main programs in the SDSS III/BOSS project: the Luminous Red Galaxies catalogue and a new technique based on quasars using the Lyman-alpha forest. I have focused my research on the LRG science. I performed a complete analysis of BOSS-CMASS sample from catalog construction, systematic corrections and cosmological constrains

Carter, Neil. "'Meet the new boss; same as the old boss' : a social history of the football manager, 1880 - c.1966." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2002. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/46628/.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a history of the development of the manager in English football from 1880 until the mid-1960s. It is predicated on two main arguments. First, that football management in England has largely reflected the practical tradition of British management where managers are employed more for their experience than any qualifications that they might hold. Second, that the management of players during this period mirrored prevailing attitudes within society towards the handling of young, working-class men and because they lacked any management training, managers imposed their personality and authority on them. The thesis has a chronological structure. The first chapter provides a broad overview of British management up to 1970. Its aim is to provide an overall context for the rest of the thesis by analysing the history of British management, its culture, and also the role of education. Chapter 2 charts the early development of football management in the years up to 1914. The following chapter examines the emergence of early football managers during the same period. It examines, first, the relationship between a manager and his directors and how this has developed in light of football's commercialisation process; second, how the training and background of managers has reflected trends within British management; and third, the manager's relationship with his workers, the players. This framework will be used throughout the thesis. Chapter 4 is a case study of Herbert Chapman. Chapter 5 deals with the inter-War period and Chapter 6 looks at the emergence of modem football management from 1945 up to the Sixties. Chapter 7 assesses the socio-economic impact of a manager on a team's performance during this period. The conclusion will briefly draw together the main themes and arguments of the thesis.

Byrne, Ros, and n/a. "Influencing the boss : correlates of upward influence strategies." University of Canberra. Administration, 1994. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20050202.165638.

Full text
Abstract:
The research reported in this thesis examines some aspects of upward influence behaviours at work, and in particular, the relationship between type of influence behaviours used and a number of potential correlates, including sex of agent, sex of target, sex-role identity, locus of control, job level, job type (secretarial worker or not) and educational level of agent. To examine these relationships. 64 male and 173 female white-collar workers (at AS01 to AS06 levels, or equivalent) in three large organisations in Canberra (A.C.T.) were surveyed, with a questionnaire containing measures of influence behaviours, attitudes to influencing upwards at work, a measure of sex-role identity, and a measure of locus of control beliefs, as well as demographic information. The data gathered from this survey was analysed using univariate, bivariate. and multivariate methods. Results showed limited support for stereotypical differences between males and females in influence behaviours used, and no support for hypotheses involving sex of target, sex-role identity, or secretarial workers. Influence behaviours previously identified as having positive outcomes for the agent were found in this study to be significantly associated with job level and educational level; influence behaviours previously identified as having negative outcomes for the agent were significantly associated with the tendency to explain outcomes in terms of control by powerful others, and with a sex-role identity characterised by negative masculinity traits. These findings suggest the importance of both structural and personal factors in choice of upward influence strategies at work. Suggestions for further research are provided.

Abstract:
Teachers are often surprised to find that their students have forgotten material that they demonstrated mastery of on a recent assessment. To address this issue, many teachers attempt to give students more meaningful encounters with course material through various types of alternative assessment. This study examines the effects of creating an assessment portfolio on student achievement and compares alternative assessment strategies to traditional assessment strategies. During the study students reflected on assessments that they completed and created a portfolio to show what and how they learned. Students completed surveys and interviews to determine how they felt these assessments helped them to learn.

Buchanan, Thomas W. "The life of Rollin "Doc" Bunch, the boss of Middletown." Virtual Press, 1992. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/862281.

Full text
Abstract:
This work deals with the life and, particularly, the political career of Dr. Rollin Bunch, a three-term mayor of Muncie, Indiana. There are several valid reasons why Bunch's life and career deserve a study. Simple chronology is a major reason. Bunch's first two terms were during the tumultuous World War I era, and his final administration occurred during the equally historic Depression of the 1930s.Another reason to pursue this study is that Bunch represents both the political bossism of the turn of the century and the idealism expressed by the New Deal. By employing old-fashioned power politics to obtain progressive and liberal goals, Bunch proved to be an innovative leader. His frequent legal problems, including several indictments and even a federal prison term, also make him an interesting case study.Primary data, which consists of sources not contaminated by the opinions and prejudices of others, will provide most documentation. Contemporary newspapers have been my main source. The newspapers most used in this study are two conservative, Republican daily papers, The Muncie Morning Star and The Muncie Evening Press. Two defunct weekly papers were also studied, The X-Ray and The Muncie Post Democrat. The X-Ray was a barely coherent anti-Semitic paper, whereas The Muncie Post Democrat was published by another Muncie mayor and bitter enemy of Bunch, George Dale. All four newspapers routinely vilified Bunch, which makes his substantial electoral success even more remarkable.Personal interviews were another major source. The main problem was finding people who could clearly recall the events of six to seven decades ago, not an easy task. Despite these inherent problems, documentation concerning Bunch was available from several sources.I believe this dissertation will add substantially to the body of work available concerning local histories generally, and Muncie and Delaware County particularly.

Massu, Justine. "Thinking outside the boss : understanding managers' engagement in creative actions." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCB208/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2010, 1,500 Chief Executive Officers identified managers' creativity as the most crucial factor for future organizational success. However, managers' engagement in creative actions is constantly competing with routine behaviors that imply less risk taking, uncertainty and possibility of failure. This dissertation explores three potential avenues to understand managers' decisions to engage in creative actions. The first one focuses on managers' conceptions of creativity and innovation as antecedents of their own creative behaviors and their evaluation of creative managers and managerial practices. The second avenue examines how creative actions result from a decision-making process that evaluates the relevance of creativity in specific situations and takes into account individual predispositions and organizational characteristics. The third avenue investigates the extent to which a fit or misfit between managers and their organizations can trigger creative behaviors. This research reaffirms the relevance of the multivariate and interactionnist approaches to organizational creativity. It highlights also the importance of considering managers' evaluation of the appropriateness and effectiveness of specific creative actions in specific situations. Finally, most research tends to conceive that managerial creativity emerges from positive and encouraging circumstances. In contrast, the present research highlights that managerial creativity can emerge as a response to situations of misfit and dissatisfaction

The human history of sexuality is characterized by vast inequalities regardingsexual maneuver between women and men. With this study, we intend to explorethe potential inequalities between boys and girls' sexual maneuver in Sweden, theworld's fourth most equal country. Our study is based on two focus groups with atotal of 13 participants in the age of 16-17 years old. The empirical data in ourstudy have been analyzed from a social constructivist perspective. Our studyshows that the same actions and behaviours that give boys the status of kingsgives girls rumours of being whores. Our study also demonstrates the ideals thatexists regarding how a girl and how a guy should be. Girls are expected to controltheir sexuality and not be “too much”. Boys on the other hand are expected to takemore space and act out their sexuality. Our study shows that there are greatdisparities between girls' and boys' sexual autonomy, where girls' space is muchmore limited than boys.

Abstract:
This thesis illustrates the complexity of emotions in the entrepreneurial context. By using vignettes and in-depth interviews conducted among nine employees from entrepreneurial firms in Lithuania and nine employees from entrepreneurial firms in the Netherlands, this study offers a perspective on how emotional display of the entrepreneur influence employee’s behavior. The display of two negative (anger and fear), two positive (joy and confidence) emotions, and entrepreneurial passion are studied and the findings show that there is (a) a significant relationship between entrepreneur’s display of positive and negative emotions and employee’s behavior (e.g., motivation and decision-making); (b) the entrepreneur’s emotions have potentially positive and negative effect on the employee’s behavior and this is largely influenced by the relationship and dynamics between the employee and entrepreneur defined by the duration and intensity of the relationship, the formal/informal distance between the entrepreneur and employee, past experiences with the entrepreneur, the degree of honesty and sincerity expressed, and the level of mutual trust; (c) the reaction of the employees is partly based on the characteristics above as well as on sensitivity towards the emotions to whom they are displayed. In terms of reactions, the employees have a certain emotional balance based on the past situation, current situation, and the personal preference towards the degree and frequency of positive versus negative emotions. Each emotional display is weighed on this balance and inflicts a feeling, which results in a certain behavior. Finally, studying (d) the patterns between Dutch and Lithuanian employees in their perception of the entrepreneurs’ emotions, the results show that Dutch employees, in general, are more direct and assertive. They indicate that they greatly enjoy displays of positive emotions, passion and a degree of informalities when the relationship with the entrepreneur develops, but in negative situations they have the tendency to direct their irritation-adjusting behavior directly towards the entrepreneur. Lithuanian employees are more focused on finding solutions to negative situations together with colleagues rather than confronting the entrepreneur, and to balance on so called “blinding” effect they greatly value rationality and reason from the entrepreneur. To interpret and fully understand the specifics of the findings we use valence, appraisal, and expectancy theories. Based on this analytical approach, we provide two tentative models that, we think, both well summarize the results of this research and call for a need for a further research suggesting that there might be much more hidden behind the curtains of the emotional scene introduced by this thesis.

Abstract:

Borde, Arnaud. "One-Dimensional Power Spectrum and Neutrino Mass in the Spectra of BOSS." Phd thesis, Université Paris Sud - Paris XI, 2014. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-01023004.

Full text
Abstract:
The framework of the studies presented in this thesis is the one-dimensional power spectrum of the transmitted flux in the Lyman-alpha forests. The Lyman-alpha forest is an an absorption pattern seen in the spectra of high redshift quasars corresponding to the absorption of the quasar light by the hydrogen clouds along the line of sight. It is a powerful cosmological tool as it probes relatively small scales, of the order of a few Mpc. It is also sensible to small non-linear effects such as the one induced by massive neutrinos.First, we have developed two independent methods to measure the one-dimensional power spectrum of the transmitted flux in the Lyman-alpha forest. The first method is based on a Fourier transform, and the second on a maximum likelihood estimator. The two methods are independent and have different systematic uncertainties. The determination of the noise level in the data spectra was subject to a novel treatment, because of its significant impact on the derived power spectrum. We applied the two methods to 13,821 quasar spectra from SDSS-III/BOSS DR9 selected from a larger sample of over 60,000 spectra on the basis of their high quality, large signal-to-noise ratio, and good spectral resolution. The power spectra measured using either approach are in good agreement over all twelve redshift bins from =2.2 to =4.4, and scales from 0.001 (km/s)^−1 to 0.02 (km/s)^−1. We carefully determined the methodological and instrumental systematic uncertainties of our measurements. Then, we present a suite of cosmological N-body simulations with cold dark matter, baryons and neutrinos aiming at modeling the low-density regions of the IGM as probed by the Lyman-alpha forests at high redshift. The simulations are designed to match the requirements imposed by the quality of BOSS and eBOSS data. They are made using either 768^3 or 192^3 particles of each type, spanning volumes ranging from (25 Mpc/h)^3 for high-resolution simulations to (100 Mpc/h)^3 for large-volume ones. Using a splicing technique, the resolution is further enhanced to reach the equivalent of simulations with 3072^3 = 29 billion particles of each type in a (100 Mpc/h)^3 box size, i.e. a mean mass per gas particle of 1.2x10^5 solar masses. We show that the resulting power spectrum is accurate at the 2% level over the full range from a few Mpc to several tens of Mpc. We explore the effect on the one-dimensional transmitted-flux power spectrum of 4 cosmological parameters (n_s, sigma_8, Omega_m ,H_0), 2 astrophysical parameters (T_0, gamma) related to the heating rate of the IGM and the sum of the neutrino masses. By varying the input parameters around a central model chosen to be in agreement with the latest Planck results, we built a grid of simulations that allows the study of the impact on the flux power spectrum of these seven relevant parameters. We improve upon previous studies by not only measuring the effect of each parameter individually, but also probing the impact of the simultaneous variation of each pair of parameters. We thus provide a full second-order expansion, including cross-terms, around our central model. We check the validity of the second-order expansion with independent simulations obtained either with different cosmological parameters or different seeds for the initial condition generation. Finally, a comparison to the one-dimensional Lyman-alpha forest power spectrum obtained in the first part with BOSS data shows an excellent agreement.Eventually, even if there are still some potential biases and systematic errors that need to be studied in our simulation, we performed cosmological fits combining our measurement of the one-dimensional power spectrum and other cosmological probes such as the CMB results provided by Planck. These preliminary results are very encouraging as they lead to some of the tighest cosmological constraints as of today, especially on the sum of the neutrino masses with an upper limit of 0.1 eV.

Abstract:
Despite an abundance of research on interventions to improve social skills of young children with intellectual disabilities (ID), there is limited research on interventions aimed at improving social skills of adults with ID. The purpose of this single-subject study was to evaluate the outcomes of the Behavioral Opportunities for Social Skills (BOSS) teaching program for adults with ID. The theoretical framework for this study was Skinner's operant conditioning which incorporates the principles of applied behavior analysis, reinforcement, and operant extinction. After direct support professionals were trained in the BOSS teaching program, research questions were used to determine (a) changes in the frequency of praise statements given by direct support professionals to adults with ID; (b) differences in the frequency of cooperative and polite behaviors of adults with ID; and (c) increases or decreases in the frequency of challenging behaviors exhibited by adults with ID. A multiple-baseline design across participants and settings was used to evaluate the behavioral changes. Prosocial behaviors of 3 adults with ID and 3 direct support professionals' delivery of specific praise statements showed visually discernable increases and large effect sizes (ES -?¥ 0.92). The outcomes of this study contribute to positive social change as demonstrated by the positive behavioral changes achieved by the adults with ID who increased their prosocial behaviors and the direct support professionals who increased their delivery of specific praise statements following the implementation of the BOSS teaching program.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the effects of audits on the Navy's Buy Our Spares Smart (BOSS) Program. The BOSS program was established in 1983 in response to the Department of Defense's efforts to resolve the spare parts pricing problem. The study focused on the impact of Government (U.S. General Accounting Office, Department of Defense Inspector General, and Naval Audit Service) auditing on the development and progress of the BOSS program. This study examined all (20) completed audits as listed in the BOSS annual reports and compared them against changes that have occurred since inception of the BOSS program. The researcher found no significant impact of Government auditing on the BOSS program. The BOSS program has demonstrated unusual stability from the beginning implying that the program was extremely well thought out and executed. Audit findings and recommendations readily support this supposition. (Author)

Abstract:

Individuals spend a majority of their lives in the organizational settings and the communication that occurs is detrimental to maintaining balance, while allotting for specific goals to be met. This goal of this thesis was to catalog supervisor misbehaviors with regard to frequency and valence and validate an adapted supervisor misbehavior measure. Additionally, misbehaviors have a relationship with power (prosocial/antisocial), organizational dissent, organizational orientations, supervisor credibility, and subordinate satisfaction. Participants (N = 258) responded to a questionnaire assessing their perceptions on misbehaviors of their current or most recent supervisor. Statistical analyses substantiated the adaptation of misbehaviors from the instructional to the organizational context. Supervisor misbehaviors had significant relationships with power (antisocial and prosocial), dissent (latent), organizational orientations (ambivalent), supervisor credibility (competence, goodwill, and trustworthiness), and subordinate satisfaction. Results are consistent with those found by Kearney et al., (1991) the seminal research on teacher misbehaviors. Despite compelling results, additional research is necessary to ascertain an exhausted supervisor misbehaviors typology and validate a corresponding measure.

Abstract:
Originating from the gravitational collapse of the primordial fluctuations of matter, galaxy clusters are the mixture of a dark matter halo, a baryonic plasma also called « hot gas » and several galaxies. Cluster counts provide stringent constraints on cosmology.Improving the detection of the hot gas component in nearby or distant structures is the main goal of my work. We can detect this hot gas in the Planck satellite maps thanks to the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and in the ROSAT satellite maps by bremsstrahlung. The first part of my thesis is dedicated to the detection of hot gas in Planck maps at the positions of BOSS quasars, so in distant structures.Dust-like emission dominates our signal. I developped a new filter in order to separate the possible sub-dominant hot gas emision from the dust one. I get a significnt hot gas signal for structures with redshift z >2.5.In the second part of the thesis, the simultaneous detection, I build a filter suited for extracting clusters (z<1.5) individually in the ROSAT data respecting the noise statitistics. This filter is also designed to be combined with the filter used for detecting clusters in Planck maps. Increasing the number of less massive clusters will be the final goal

This study aimed at identifying compatibilities between Jacob Levy Moreno s psychodrama and Medard Boss s Daseinsanalysis in psychotherapeutic practice. Both approaches rose from the same historical context, with common origins in the vein of philosophical existential phenomenology. Moreno s professional trajectory was presented, referencing his four creative moments and the concepts and psychotherapeutic practices that arose in each of these moments. Daseinsanalysis s founding principles and its method of psychotherapeutic treatment, which was proposed by Boss drawing from Heideggerian ontology, are reviewed. Fundamental similarities in their psychotherapeutic practice were found in Moreno s Psychodrama and Boss s Daseinsanalysis, which are then shown through examples of Moreno s and Boss conduction of clinical cases. The compatibilities were verified in both authors practices. Without damaging psychodramatic methodology, Moreno acts as a daseinsanalyst when welcomes patients as they are, offering the possibility to understand and transform their being-in-the-world. In the same way, maintaining loyalty to the daseinanalytical method, Boss acts as a psycho dramatist when he enables his patient to experience his childlike state in a spontaneously creative way, offering a shelter for her to re-live principal moments of his childhood. From those identified compatibilities, it is contended that psychotherapists and adherents to psychotherapy can benefit from the integration of the two approaches, since they coexist without opposition. A psychodramatist can, thanks to his psychotherapeutic practices, exercise Bossian Daseinanalysis and daseinanalysts can, in their psychotherapeutic practices, exercise Morenian psychodrama

Full text
Abstract:
Nearly half of the human and mouse genomes is composed of transposable elements (TEs) which are pieces of DNA capable of or once capable of moving to different locations in the genome. These mobile elements can potentially impact host gene expression in a variety of ways either directly through insertional mutagenesis or indirectly by serving as an alternative promoter/enhancer or through modification of splice signals. In order to protect the integrity of the genome, various mechanisms have evolved to silence TEs. Chromatin modifications, namely DNA methylation and histone modifications, represent two methods of transcriptional silencing of transposable elements. In previous studies it has been shown that methylation of short interspersed nucleotide element (SINE) TEs in the plant and mouse genome can “spread” into flanking sequences. I chose to investigate this “spreading” phenomenon with respect to endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) which are highly active in the mouse genome. Direct evidence has been provided for ERVs in the mouse genome inducing the spread of repressive chromatin. However, the ability of ERV-induced “spreading” to impact nearby gene expression has not yet been characterized. In my thesis, I provide evidence for repressive chromatin spreading as an infrequent occurrence with the exception of the B3galtl gene where DNA methylation and repressive histone marks spread from a solitary ERV long terminal repeat (LTR) into the CpG island promoter of the gene, which correlates with reduced gene transcription. In most cases, however, I show that CpG islands are unmethylated despite the presence of a nearby methylated ERV. Furthermore, I show examples of differential epigenetic marking of insertions with the 3’LTR of the insertion located closest to the nearby gene exhibiting hypomethylation. In one case in particular, I show an interesting trend between expression of the CdGAP gene and hypomethylation of the nearby 3’LTR. These results lead to the conclusion that susceptibility to or protection from “spreading” of repressive chromatin marks is a locus-specific event that may be mediated by various factors such as the ERV-gene distance, the presence of a CpG island gene promoter, the chromatin state of the gene promoter, and the expression of the corresponding gene.

Abstract:
In this thesis work we exploited two alternative ML-based techniques to put constraints on the matter density contrast,Ωm, from the two-point correlation function of galaxies in the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), which is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) III. The considered galaxy sample consists of almost 1.2 millions massive galaxies over an effective area of 9329 square degrees, in a comoving volume of 18.7 cubic Gigaparsecs spanning the redshift range 0.2< z <0.75. The two implemented ML models perform a Multi-Class Classification and a Regression Analysis, and have been trained with a large set of mock two-point correlation function measurements, obtained from log-normal mock catalogues with the same observational selections of the BOSS sample. The constraints we obtained with the Classification and Regression models are Ωm= 0.30±0.03 and Ωm= 0.307±0.006, respectively. These results are remarkably consistent with the ones from Alam et al. (2017), that have been obtained through a standard Bayesian analysis using the same galaxy catalogue. In particular, the Regression ML method implemented in this thesis work provides Ωm constraints that are competitive with the ones obtained by state-of-the-art standard analyses, providing a new, independent confirmation of the standard ΛCold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) cosmological framework. This thesis work demonstrates that supervised ML techniques can be effectively applied to observed cosmological data such as galaxy catalogues, and not only to images or simulations.

Abstract:
This thesis examines issues of power, culture and schooling as they apply to an indigenous community located on Saibai Island in the Torres Strait of northern Australia. The thesis combines literature research with ethnography to consider Saibaian schooling in various contexts. These include the history of schooling in the region, the relevant educational literature and the actual physical and social contexts of schooling on Saibai. Early chapters deal with methodology, history and educational literature. Later chapters deal with ethnographic material using the themes of separation, culture and collaborative decision-making to organise the data. The work of Michel Foucault informs the analytical approach to issues of power. Hence power is considered to be ubiquitous, productive and linked to issues of knowledge and culture. School principals are identified as key figures in schooling and therefore play a major role in the thesis. As the principals are all men of non-Islander (anglo) backgrounds, this thesis represents a significant break from works within the realm of indigenous education that are heavily influenced by cultural anthropology and tend to focus only on the Aboriginal or Islander participants as objects of study. The thesis considers how Saibaian people are excluded from schooling through various techniques and practices that tend to place the principal in a position of autocracy vis a vis the school. Furthermore, I show how various schooling practices that aim to include community members in schooling are shaped and transformed such that they actually serve to entrench the principal in his position of control over schooling. This applies even in the way that cultural activities are incorporated into the school illustrating that no aspect of schooling is immune to relations of power. Indeed, the notion of Saibaian Islanders belonging to a unique cultural group is used by some principals to argue that they are unsuited to roles within the school's decision-making process. Ultimately, then, this thesis is about relations between school principals and community members in the context of schooling on Saibai Island.

Abstract:
The current study examined the relationship between supervisor and subordinate performance, explored the impact of supervisor performance on subordinate performance and performance change over time, and investigated whether supervisor performance has a stronger impact on subordinate performance over time than initial subordinate performance has on supervisor performance over time. This study utilized a longitudinal, quasi-experimental design with multiple sources of measurement. Multisource managerial performance ratings from 2001 to 2003 were obtained from a large multinational technology firm. Subordinates and their bosses? performance ratings from different sources were investigated by correlational and multiple regression analyses. Separate analyses were conducted on a subset of the subordinates who experienced a change in supervisor between years one (2001) and two (2002) and another subset who did not experience change in supervisor over the three year study. The correlational and predictive analyses revealed that supervisor performance and change in supervisor performance did not relate to or predict the performance or performance change of subordinates at the middle management level. Change in supervisor performance, specifically when a supervisor is replaced by another supervisor with a different level of performance, did not predict change in subordinate performance concurrently or over time. Finally, neither initial supervisor performance nor initial subordinate performance differentially predicted later subordinate or supervisor performance over time.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the combinations of cosmological probes from the measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxy redshift surveys, and exploits data from the Planck satellite and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. It explores how cross-correlations between different data sets can be used to detect new signals and improve contraints on cosmological parameters. First, we measure, for the first time, the cross-correlation between gravitational lensing of the CMB and the power spectrum of the Lyman-α forest in the spectra of quasars. This effect, which emerges from purely non-linear evolution, is interpreted as the response of the power spectrum to large-scale modes. It shows how fluctuations in the density of neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium are affected by large-scale fluctuations in the density of dark matter. The measured signal is compatible with the theoretical approach and simulations run by another group. In a second time, we develop a formalism enabling the joint analysis of the galaxy/quasar density contrast and CMB lensing. Taking cross-correlations between these probes into account reduces error bars on some cosmological parameters by up to 20%, equivalent to an increase in the size of the survey of about 50%. This analysis is completed by CMB temperature anisotropies information in order to constrain all the parameters of the ΛCDM standard model and galaxy biases at once. Finally, it is extended to obtain contraints on the dark energy equation of state as well as the sum of the masses of neutrinos

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the value of using a Daseinsanalytic approach to dream explication in order to reveal the essential meaningfulness of behaviourial possibilities for the patient. After discussing the Daseinsanalytic view on dream explication, emphasizing Medard Boss's approach as the major exponent of this view, the study explores the usefulness and validity of the study as a method of investigating the dreams from this perspective. The dreams related in this study are examined individually, giving a phenomenological understanding of each and also providing a possible prospective focus for therapy. It will be shown that the phenomenological understanding of the patient's dreams corresponds with his subjective experience of his emotional existential situation and that any positive changes in the content of the dreams over time corresponds with observable and related changes in his behaviour, ideation and mood. However, if the suggested prospective focus of Medard Boss had been more usefully employed when each dream was explicated in the therapy sessions, it is felt that the progress of therapy would have been greatly enhanced. This study therefore concludes that the use of Medard Boss's approach to dream explication has not only a hermeneutic value in the process of therapy, but also aids the dreamer in becoming aware of the possible modes of behaviour yet unrevealed in his waking life.

Abstract:
In the work presented in this thesis, I use the power spectrum of the transmitted flux in the Lyman-alpha (Ly-$alpha$) forest of distant quasars to constrain the mass of cosmological neutrinos in the context of four seperate projects. Neutrinos leave a signature imprint on large scale structures in the Universe through their free-streaming, which manifests as a deficit of matter density fluctuations on typical length scales that are inversely proportional to their rest mass. This typical free-streeming scale, of order a few Mpc, can be probed by Ly-$alpha$ forests which are imprints of the neutral atomic Hydrogen density along the background quasar's line-of-sight. I use the Ly-$alpha$ flux power spectrum from mainly two large scale structure surveys: the $13,821$ low-resolution quasar spectra from the ninth data release of SDSS (BOSS) in 12 redshift bins from $langle z rangle = 2.2$ to $4.4$; and the $100$ high-resolution quasar spectra from the XQ-100 survey (of the VLT's XShooter spectrograph) in 3 redshift bins, $langle z rangle = 3.20, 3.56$ and $3.93$. This enables us to probe scales from $k geqslant 0.001~s/mathrm{km}$ to $k leqslant 0.02$ and $k leqslant 0.07~ s/mathrm{km}$ respectively.Modeling the flux power spectrum requires solving the non-linear regime of structure formation and the intergalactic gas in the cosmological hydrodynamics simulations that are used to that effect. I controlled for several of many systematic uncertainties related to the simulations. First, I ran simulations with different initial conditions to quantify the sampling variance. I then tested the accuracy of a splicing technique that we use to construct the flux power spectrum from lower size and lower resolution simulations. This required producing a complete run of a $(100~h^{-1}mathrm{Mpc})^3$ comoving cube containing $2 times 2048^3$ dark matter particles and baryons. This enabled our working group to enhance the previously established constraints on the sum of neutrino masses from $sum m_nu < 0.15~mathrm{eV}$ to the most stringent constraint to date $sum m_nu < 0.12~mathrm{eV}$ with $95%$ confidence. I then worked on implementing right-handed neutrinos in non-cold dark matter cosmological frameworks. A substancial amount of work has gone into applying plausible initial conditions that would accurately model the free-streaming effect of these types of particles. I put the most stringest constraints (at the time of publication) on the mass of non-resonantly produced sterile neutrinos as pure warm dark matter candidates, $m_nu lesssim 25~mathrm{keV}$ at $95%$ confidence. I extended this investigation into a mixed warm plus cold dark matter cosmology. Finally, I implement right-handed neutrinos produced in presence of a lepton asymmetry which boosts their production and lowers their free-streaming scale. I started a collaboration with a team of theoretical physicists involved in searching for astrophysical evidence for the existance of such resonantly-produced right-handed neutrinos in dark matter rich systems. Our new-born collaboration has enabled the first ever constraints on their mass using the Ly-$alpha$ forest power spectrum

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
According to surveys conducted by the organization Ledarna, there is a recurrent problem of recruiting young women to senior positions. The purpose of this essay is to investigate what may affect women's desire to seek a managerial position and to design a HR strategy that promotes and motivates women to seek executive positions. Young women feel doubtful about manager positions because of the feeling of lack of experience and difficulty identifying themselves with the stereotype manage standard. Aspects of the management that motivate are the ability to influence, make decisions and gain personal development. The fact that a manager has a high workload is something that is referred to as negative while the challenge in the manager position attracted the interviewees. Focusing on difficulty in balancing work and private/family life can be an overriding explanation that fewer women choose a managerial career. In many cases, the manager position offers an opportunity for flexible working hours, which benefits the balance between work and private life. A key factor in combining management positions with family and children is an equal distribution of household work and responsibility for the children. Several of the interviewees have gained their position through encouragement, something that was crucial for the manager position. In order to motivate young women into management positions, engagement is needed in which female executive subjects are discovered and encouraged to career. The work is based on a qualitative approach with semi structured interviews as a collection method. The results are analyzed based on the theoretical reference frame compiled within the focus area. Throughout the structure of the work, the thematic approaches are based on the questions: What is it that makes young women doubt about leadership? What can motivate young women to want to become a manager? How can work life as a manager be combined with privacy/family life? How can recruitment be improved to motivate young women to seek executive positions?

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: This qualitative case study extends the research of algorithmic management by examining the experiences of food-delivery workers working for the gig company Foodora. As Foodora promotes the job as flexible and autonomous, the utilisation of labour process theory (LPT) in this study helps to uncover if these sentiments hold true in practice by examining what Foodora’s labour process looks like, and how control, autonomy, and individualism take shape in the workplace. Method: Interviews with eight Foodora delivery workers working in Sweden were carried out, where the data was transcribed and coded. Analysis: Using LPT as a framework for the analysis, the material was coded according to the themes of control, transparency, resistance, consent, and individualism. By doing this, the study contextualises algorithmic management within the wider framework of capitalistic management forms and highlights how it impacts worker experiences. Results: The results show that the experiences of the job were largely different among the individual participants of the study. It is proved that Foodora’s employment of algorithmic management impacts almost every aspect of the daily work since it centres around following automated directives which the workers receive through an app. Individualism is accentuated by a self-entrepreneurial discourse promoted by Foodora and the fact that the workforce is dispersed with limited opportunities to interact. Despite being a dispersed workforce, the workers have been able to organise which has led to a growing number of workers joining the union. Conclusion: The impacts of algorithmic management are proved to be evident. The varied experiences of the job could have multiple explanations and needs to be explored further in relation to economical and societal factors. The effects of the newly implemented collective bargaining agreement also need to be examined in future research.

Fillipone, Jeffrey Alan. "Structure and metamorphism at the western margin of the Omineca belt near Boss mountain, east central British Columbia." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24661.

Full text
Abstract:
Rocks of the Hadrynian and Early Paleozoic (?) Snowshoe Group comprise the core of the Boss Mountain area at the western margin of the Omineca Belt near Crooked Lake. Structurally overlying these are rocks of the Intermontane Belt: the Permian Slide Mountain Group (Antler Formation), Triassic fine grained sediments (unnamed), and Jurassic volcanic rocks (Takla Group). In the Snowshoe Group, a large, lensoid intrusion of coarse grained granitic rock (Boss Mountain gneiss) was emplaced during the mid-Paleozoic, and later deformed and metamorphosed with the enclosing metasediments. The rocks of the Snowshoe Group act as basement to the overlying Late Paleozoic/Early Mesozoic cover rocks. Within the basement, four phases of regionally significant deformation have been recognized, and are manifest as fold generations designated Fl through F4. Earliest structures, Fl, in the Snowshoe Group are isoclinal folds, accompanied by a transposed foliation of regional extent, which are overprinted by penetrative deformation related to easterly verging F2 nappe structures. The F3 folds are upright or inclined to the northeast, and give a consistent southwesterly sense of vergence. These folds are responsible for the regional map pattern, and have folded both the basement and cover into an antiformal culmination in the Boss Mountain area. Fourth phase structures refold the other features, but do not appreciably affect the F3 geometry. In the cover sequences, the first phase of deformation is equivalent to the second phase within the basement During the Phase 2 deformational episode the cover rocks were emplaced over rocks of the Snowshoe Group. West-dipping imbricate faults characterize the western margin of the area, where basement rocks contain fault-bounded slivers of the cover, and the tectonic contact between basement and cover rocks is marked by a zone of mylonitization. Similarly, the F2 and F3 folding phases in the cover are equivalent to the F3 and F4 structures in the basement, respectively, but are only weakly developed in the cover. An early, enigmatic metamorphic event accompanied Phase 1 deformation in rocks of the Snowshoe Group. Field relations suggest that this was probably coeval with the mid-Paleozoic emplacement of the Boss Mountain gneiss. Metamorphism during the Jurassic was synchronous with F2 deformation in rocks of the Snowshoe Group, and resulted in Barrovian type mineral assemblages ranging from the biotite through sillimanite zones. The metamorphic grade increases from west to east; with only low grade metamorphism of the cover rocks in the study area. Phase 2 structures in the Snowshoe Group were overprinted by the peak of this metamorphic event, as indicated by staurolite through sillimanite zone assemblages. The Boss Mountain area is structurally correlative with rocks of the Shuswap Complex. These rocks appear to comprise a portion of the continental margin sedimentary wedge, which was overridden by an allochthonous terrane accreted to the western margin of North America in post-Early Jurassic times.
