Full textJacques-Bénigne Bossuet, the preeminent preacher of his time, enjoys at the court of Louis the XIV, a prominent position, which enables him to work in favor of the Church unity. Port-Royal while defending a too rigorous doctrine toward the political and religious authorities of the time is bound to incur their anger. But in spite of this apparent opposition, this particular study aims to offer a variety of converging points between the Bishop of Meaux and Port-Royal, which are parts of the second half of the XVIIe century’s big controversies and work as a telltale to demonstrate that those « temporal » debates allow revealing two theologies denying their propinquity

Full textFirstly we must examine the influence of the rhetorical theory from saint Augustine's de Doctrina christiana. No longer does the eloquence of the Ancients suffice for explaining the truth of Revelation. Philosophy must give way through prayer to Divine Wisdom as a desireable object in order to convert the listener - this Wisdom enlightens the Bible (ideas no longer come from appearances) and makes ciceronian beauty into a servant, even to sacrificing its purity. Bossuet takes this fundamental humanistic notion in its tridentine sense, and places the accent on vehemence, sometimes imitating the praecher of Hippo - who recommends that one plunge into the inspired authors -, while wavering between a more primitive and a more ciceronian style. Culture and the Unapproachable meet : call it a dialogue between creatures and their Savior, and thus we pass to the Augustinian doctrine of Justification. Bossuet shows us in the first place that Adam's exiled children, in full responsability (through free will, retained intact after the fall), can persevere in the battle against all evil desire, which tries to find rest where it cannot be found. And yet human corruption is such that efficient grace is needed to activate ordinary talents in our lives. This grace is an infallible agent, desireable in itself, that leads to a true acceptance, but supposes predestination of a restrained group, while not positing sins nor denying redemption for all, without exception. Fear of damnation, therefore, does not have the last word. Who ever seeks shall not lose the reward : the Free Gift comes before our least merit and adds to itself freely. And there will be other graces in a chain, unless we refuse them. The one (who receive) will persevere, and is a present sign that supreme grace will be given him, that he is one of the elect. Bossuet and his teacher go this far : divine liberty and human freedom are joined, beyond whatever we can say or understand in human language

Full textMarked simultaneously by the Council of Trent's resolutions inciting Christian orators to show more sobriety, and by the necessity to rouse an audience not much inclined to evangelical simplicity (the courtesans of Louis XIV), the rhetoric of funeral orations may well result from the skillful integration of rhetoric techniques that were once pagan to the Christian mindset.
Bossuet taught a lesson in humility, modesty and piety, in a language that was bound to leave an imprint on the worldly; heroics, praise, moral portrait, epic tables and Cornelian vocabulary, usually destined for entertainment, were now used to convert: pagan techniques to save souls....
It is quite possible that the eloquence of Bossuet resides within such a paradox.

Full textAuthority appears as the conceptual and aesthetic leading principle of the abundant and diverse work of Bossuet, often portrayed as the champion of French absolutism and Tridentine Catholicism. It is thus through the prism of the rhetoric of authority, in an inclusive and multidisciplinary approach, that the argumentative strategies employed by the Bishop of Meaux are here examined : the use and perversion of the topoi, the construction of a double-sided pathos of domination and communion, the multiplication of ethe pointing to the fundamental duality of the speaker self, who oscillates between strength and weakness. Bossuet’s works are thus underlined by a double tension. On the one hand, while pursuing the dream, constantly reaffirmed, of a universal truth that is authoritative per se, and whose simple exposition would be persuasive, Bossuet in fact employs a complex "rhetoric of authority" aimed at imposing, by diverse means, his personal truth. On the other, while laying claim to an essentially traditional authority, Bossuet’s work is ultimately marked by his personal authorship

Full textThis study is based upon a corpus of about 500 titles of catholic and protestant controversy completed by a surview of periodicals and of different archivistic sources among which the archives of the evangelical society of geneva. The first part is devoted to the juridical, political and historical background : the "concordat", the attitude of the authorities towards the protestants and their evangelical activity which induced a controversy upon religious freedom. Then it points out general schemes taking a catholic point of view : missionnary effort, will to conquer back the ground lost after the revolution, succeeded, after 1830, by a struggle to save what can still be saved (ethical regulation, schools, charity work). The catholic church constantly refuses to admit the juridical equality of the different cults, if not their plurality, and sweeps off the irenic efforts of some protestants anxious to reintegrate the national community or worried about the progress of incredulity. The second part analyses the evolution of controversy from theological ground (bossuet style) to political ground (maurras style). This evolution is allowed by a widening of the semantical field, antiprotestant polemists defining protestantism both as individualism and revolution. Besides the classical themes of theological controversy, a number of political themes appear : breach of unity, plot, altety. The texts are examined from the different points of view of the distorsion of reality, the elaboration of a interpreting frame, and of the ability of protestantism to reach public opinion. A comparison is made with antisemitism and anticlericalism
Gauthier, Marion.
Full textScandal and indignation constitute two central thematic and rhetorical notions of classical religious preaching which this work proposes to study from the sermons of the three greatest preachers of the reign of Louis XIV: Bossuet, Bourdaloue and Massillon. The first part presents the theological foundations of the scandal before following the evolution of this notion which interests canon law and morals. The second part of this work studies precisely the notion of scandal in the sermons of the classical preachers. It highlights the moral transposition and the generalization of the notion of scandal in the classical age in the form of scandal of morals. The analysis of classical sermons seeks to unfold the functioning of the argument of scandal and the associated rhetorical passion, indignation
Terestchenko, Michel. Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040018.
Full textThe dispute on pure love which opposed, between 1697 and 1699, Fénelon and Bossuet can not be limited solely to those distinguished prelates of the church of France, nor can it be reduced to this unique period of the end of the great century. Not only did it involve the most prominent theologians and philosophers of France and Europe, such as Malebranche, Leibniz or Pierre Nicole, but it also goes through the whole century. It was the matter of much older controversies, such as the debate between Jean-Pierre Camus, the salesian bishop of Belley, and father Antoine Sirmond which took place during the years 1639-1642. The first aim of our study was to locate the controversy on the nature of the love of god in the religious history of the seventeenth century. The analysis of the implications of this dispute reveals that it has to be understood from three point of views : spiritual, theological and philosophical. 1) The spiritual doctrine on prayer and on contemplation that Fénelon presents connects him with the great spanish mystic tradition of the XVIth century and with the eckhartian tradition of the XIVth century and, beyond this, to the negative theology of Denys the Areopagite. The doctrine of Fénelon on the state of the soul immersed in god appears to be the western understanding of the "hesyschast" spirituality of the desert fathers, and especially of John Cassian's. 2) From the theological point of view, the doctrine on the pure love of god, free from all care for one's own salvation, is, according to Fénelon, the only possible way of reconciling the obligation. .

Full textThe desire is central to Bossuet's spirituality. According to him, desire will make its object come to be : therefore one must control it or exalt it, in the hopes of securing “the one thing needful”. Heir to Pagan and Christian Antiquity, as an Augustinian and Thomist more so than a Cartesian, Bossuet defends traditional Catholic doctrine. His promotion of self-interest in the quest for salvation nevertheless has a relationship with some concerns typical of his time. Could he evoke spiritual desire in an analogous way to carnal desires ? Since, in the seventeenth century, theological terms were frequently rendered secular, his preference for the profane word encourages this analogy, although his perspective on the disorders of desire remains more metaphysical than the Moralists'views. Both natural and surnatural, the momentum of the desire of God infinitely surpasses the sensitive order from which it cannot free itself. This presents itself through the post-Tridentine predicator's rhetoric. He uses pedagogic and imperfect images, here inventoried in an index. As in the biblical figural system, which arouses the desire for an accomplishment, their literalness is meaningful. Fortified by biblical and patristical mediations, Bossuet's imaginary world is marked by the importance of nature (the harmony of which sings the love of God) and a predilection for metaphors of nuptial love. The predicator aims to instigate this love, through his verb. The delectable musicality of his oratorical elo-quence metaphorically represents this orientation of bodily desires towards God. His letters, sermons and spiritual wrintings communicate the impetus animating the faithful and the lyrical language of his prayer. Because in our world one cannot express God's desire without fumbling with words
Maiolini, Elena. Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040032.
Full textBy accusing the theatre of teaching the dangerous «language of passions», Pierre Nicole gave ajudgment of which Manzoni would have thought for a long time. The subject of literary moralityoffers an interesting view of Manzoni’s relationship – dynamic and largely unexplored – with thebeloved authors of the French 17th century moral philosophy. Being in strong syntony with them inethical and religious issues, as well as in questions of method and language, Manzoni carried out apassionate analysis on the role of literature, in a direct dialogue with censors, who, according to him, hadn’t received a convincing answer to that point of time. This study shows that Manzoni’s response, outlined in an unfinished speech, proposed a concrete way of representing passions, not as futile andtoxic divertissement, but with a noble cognitive function. We attempt to show that Manzoni’slanguage owes much to the moralists themselves, «deep and keen observers of the human heart»,whose sermons, stored on the shelves of Manzoni’s library, contain various signs of reading.Concieved as a philological and documentary analysis of these texts, the thesis is structured in twoparts. The first one consist of a chapter that deals with the 17th-19th centuries positions on literarymorality, and other three chapters which are dedicated to Manzoni’s vocabulary of pride, love-passionand anger. This analysis takes into account the 17th century moral treaties, the tragedies of Corneille,Racine and Shakespeare, all commented by Manzoni, and Manzoni’s playwright and novelist’sproduction. The second part consists of an essay dealing with a Manzonian lexicon of the words ofthe moral life
Tanigawa, Masako. Thesis, Paris 4, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA040033.
Full textOur study is aimed at emphasizing the Catholic influence on Pierre Bayle (1647-1706)’s texts. For the purpose of arriving at sweeping interpretations, we deal with the texts of writers of Port-Royal, such as Antoine Arnauld, Pierre Nicole, Blaise Pascal, and those of Bossuet. We follow and develop Bayle studies that have attempted these comparisons such as E. Labrousse, K. Nozawa, A. McKenna, G. Mori. At first, we confirm that the theology of Bayle and Port-Royal is based on Thomistic ideas of human conscience and natural law. And the re-reading of the texts of Nicole allows Bayle to rephrase the Thomistic concept of ignorance to propose a radical form of religious tolerance : all men have the right to follow their conscience – even if it is errant. Our next approach is toward Bayle’s political thought. For this purpose, we compare his texts with Catholic texts. Bayle, Arnauld and Bossuet, advocates of civil obedience to political power, condemn Pierre Jurieu, who demands peuples right of rebellion against a monarch in the name of freedom of conscience. They are also opposed to French Huguenot theorists at the end of the sixteenth century named « Monarchomachs », who offered to Jurieu intellectual justifications for resistance to religious persecution. This condemnation leads Bayle to separate political domain from religious domain, contrary to Bossuet’s view, that allows Louis XIV to impose on the Huguenots the conversion to Catholicism, including by force. In this context, Bayle is similar to Pascal, who disapprove of using the political force to extend Catholicism
Balliet, Pierre.
Full textThe dialects of alsace bossue (western prt of the bas-rhin district) belong to the german speaking area and are partly inflected like german. As in other modern languages, the functions formerly performed bu the inflexion of the nom inal group have been taken over by prepositions, postpositions, verbal prefixes and combinations of such functional markers. However, most of these dialects are characterized by the universal use of an invariable relative particle (the locative interrogative wo). This homonymy comes as an economy device in a system which is mainly oral, but it is not precise enough to express every function without ambiguity. As an offset to this loss of precision, relative pronouns with complex functions (dative or prepositional) require various additional substitutes for the antecedent (demonstratives, possessives, personal pronouns, adverbial pronouns), some of which are invariable, others not instead of using pronouns these dialects use relative phrases i. E. Analytical cominaisons of discontinuous morphemes, more orless precise according to the information they gibe on the antecedent and on their function. The survey conducted in ten villages by means of translations enables the morpho-syntactic and diatopic study of these combinations with 360 geolinguistic maps. What kinds of substitutes of the antecedent are used in the various villages? which dialects are the most precise? what are the correlations between the 92 types of relative phrases found and the seven distinctive features of relative clauses? how are the informations that compose the relative function distributed over the sentence? the models we proposed have not ail been translated with relative clauses. The antecedent can have other types of verbal expansions tht have been studied from the ame three points of view. On a wider scale, this balance between economical and analytical trends in oral systems is noticeable in other components than relative phrases

This examination assignment was executed as a part of the innovation and design mechanical engineer program at Karlstad University. The program is a 120 point (180 points ECTS) where the examination assignment is 15 points (22, 5 points ECTS). BAE Systems Bofors in Karlskoga was the company who gave us the assignment and with Jan Ainali as the supervisor. Monica Jakobsson was the supervisor at Karlstad University.
The assignment was to develop a soldier system and an interface between this system and combat vehicle CV9040. The reason for thhe assignment is that the soldier’s role recently has changed to demand equipment more capable in information technology.
To get started with the project an inventory was carried out partly to gather information about competing soldier systems, partly to investigate the vital components of such a system to start the development process.
The method used was largely based on the design process taught at Karlstads University as the project started with idea generation and the result of the assignment was presented in the form of a concept.
The result of this process was the soldier system BOSSE (Bofors SoldatSystemsExjobb) and consists of a number of components and concept of how to integrate the system with CV9040. Of the developed components two was pushed further in the process, the aiming module and the PDA (personal digital assistant).

Full textThe marginal rural territory is a “paradoxical entity”, torn between powerful neighbors and diverse cultural influences, but still possessing a unique personality. As it contains limited endogenous resources, this type of territory depends on nearby or distant urban areas in order for its residents to benefit from diverse and well-paying jobs, as well as for access to various services. Even so, it continues to develop an individual identity as a separate entity. Due to its shortcomings, the marginal rural territory is dependent on external provisions. Nevertheless, this openness is very selective and self-regulated. The identity of such a territory is acted out on different time scales in a succession of phases of openness and rebuilding. It is a particularly complex subject. Its modelling requires the exploration, analysis and harnessing of this complexity. We observe it at different levels: changes in scale, links between the various actors, even between these actors and the territory itself. We base our approach toward this subject on a major presupposition: the identity of a territory is defined on a collective as well as an individual scale. The link between collective territorial identity and individual territorial identities is quite complex. Our work consists in tracing the dimensions of the collective territorial universe, based on those of a collection of individuals who represent the territory. As a result, the cornerstone of this work was the creation of a model of individual territorial identity, the graphical translation of which provides a visual representation. The collective identity profile is obtained by the comparison of individual profiles. The application of the model to the Alsace Bossue region during two periods of time separated by nearly 100 years provided us with some results. In 1920-30, Alsace Bossue presented a narrow, insular identity with a very selective openness to inter-generational spaces of circulation. In 2010, its identity is marked by a greater openness, regulated however by generalized arbitration and tension between ties, and by a need for emancipation, what we call a synergy of opposites

Full textWe have proved the linguistic relevance of a noun's lexical category which we have named "breaking continuity names" (Bcn). It is composed of words such as hole, bump, ridge, crack, groove, dent, lump and so on. Its distinctive and exclusive semantic attributes we have established are : [-regular], meaning they form a deviation from an abstract norm that is a "right form"; [+salient], meaning they come necessarily to the perception and entail a naming task ; [-teleological] meaning they are perceived as being without function within the whole-entity ; and [+multiple] meaning they very often identify a great number of occurrences. Other Bcn's features, not exclusive, are : [+subsequent], meaning they are perceived as entities temporally not coextensive with the whole-entity, [+natural], meaning they don't result from an intentional act, as the "archaeological signification" (they are understood as some earlier state's signs), and the fact they belong to the family of form names, with two consequent features : [hollow / full] and [line / area]. Whe also have established what the Bcn's 'behavioral program' consists of, and its two variants directed toward [+hollow] or [+full] Bcn. Moreover, we have demonstrated the involvement of the sense of touch in Bcn's meaning, just as the involvement of a surface's conceptual factor. At the same time, we have discussed the current part-whole relations taxonomy. We have suggested widen it in ordrer to put in a new meronomical kind that the Bcn imply : 'break - continuity'. We have also broached the localization's question, and proposed a new nouns of place definition. It makes it clear that the Bcn are not nouns of place, but only can possibly be, like every noun [+spatial], names of site

Full textWithin every competitive setting, people exploit relational asymmetries stemming from connections that are sources of novel information and resources. Individuals in brokering positions are ordinarily a respective groups’ leader. Whilst scholars have extended the concept of social capital to the criminal context, there remains a relative dearth of knowledge concerning precisely how leaders exploit their criminal capital. Manifold studies have shown that leaders usually act as brokers within criminal networks, which provides an effective balance between efficiency and security in the management of illicit activities. However, other studies have demonstrated that criminal leaders often employ additional security measures, including inter alia distancing themselves from riskier activities, such as drug trafficking (DT) networks and communicating via telephone. This study examines criminal leaders’ behaviors to identify whether and in what ways they vary according to the main activities performed by their networks, and with respect to the communication channels used. This study is underpinned by eight case studies of ‘Ndrangheta groups involved in DT, or other typical Mafia-related crimes centered on the control of the territory (COT). The results indicate that while criminal leaders favor brokerage and security when involved in COT, they opt for closure and efficiency when involved in DT. Ultimately, these findings cast light upon criminal leaders’ behaviors, which, in turn, enhances extant knowledge on the internal structure of criminal networks.

The objective of this research is to verify, among the traditions related to the treaties and manuals, the pathway of a French treatrise on tecniques of engraving, until Portuguese translation. It will be investigated the relevance of this work translated into Portuguese with the title Tratado da Gravura à Água-Forte e a Buril e em Maneira Negra com o modo de construir as Prensas Modernas e de Imprimir em Talho-Doce (Treatise of Engraving, Etching, and Mezzotint with the way of building the Modern Presses and Printing Copper Plates), by Priest José Joaquim Viegas Menezes and published in 1801 in the Arco do Cego’s Typography, Lisbon. The hypothesis that the Portuguese version is based on De la Manière de Graver à L'eau Forte et au Burin, a treatise on French engraving amplified by Charles Nicolas Cochin and edited in the year 1758, guided this study. This research involved a comparison of Abraham Bosse's original treatise of 1645 with the three subsequent French editions, 1701, 1745, 1758, and the edition produced in Portugal in 1801. The changes and updates in relation to the content and the images were analyzed, verifying that the Portuguese edition of 1801 presents few changes in relation to the French text of 1758
