Abstract:
Teaching through research produces knowledge of biology, especially in botany, being a reflection of teaching practice and can be harmed not only by the lack of stimulation in observing and interacting with plants and their parts, but by the absence of basic conditions that can help in learning in classes. The use of experimentation in Biology can be a tool that assists in this learning. This study was carried out with the aim of learning how to monitor the budding and phenology of desert rose grown in pots with substrate prepared with different doses of fertilizer, to assist the future teacher's teaching practice. The desert rose Adenium obesum (Forssk.) Roem. & Schult. (Apocynaceae). It is a popular plant due to its high ornamental value and becomes an important ally in botany teaching. There are few studies that explore the best way of vegetative propagation and development of the desert rose. The methodological procedures of the study led to experimental research with the bias of applying pedagogical practice. For this, a statistical design was carried out with four treatments and six replications using parts of the plant (10 cm stems). The study evaluated the variables in plant growth: a) stem diameter – DC; b) Total chlorophyll index – TCI; c) height – AP; d) number of leaves – NF, e) number of branches – RM. The results showed that the control obtained significant results compared to the other treatments. The experimental results indicated that the doses used did not influence the phenological development of the plant. It is inferred that the desert rose in the pot cultivation of this study and in the soil and substrate conditions with the doses of fertilizers did not indicate a significant vegetative increase. The study concludes that the use of the plant as a biological model is very important to assist in botany classes and improve teaching practice and the use of active botany teaching methodologies. For initial teacher training, this experimental practice can be carried out independently and is suitable for any biology course.

Abstract:
The present study focuses on the analysis of two educational applications aimed at teaching botany in high school, they were created in the application factory, being a free Brazilian digital platform. ClikBotânica, addresses plant morphology, and Botânica na Palma da Mão, addresses plant ecology. The research was structured from qualitative and quantitative principles. The methodological process was carried out in three classes of the second year of high school (A, B, C) for the pedagogical interventions, each containing 30 students, totaling 90 students. The previous questionnaire regarding the morphology and ecology content showed that students have a greater affinity with the morphology-related content. In ecology, there was a great difficulty on the part of the students in solving the questions. After using the application, there was a significant reduction in wrong questions, especially those related to plant ecology. Thus, it is noted that the use of Information and Communication Technologies - ICTs in the classroom is something favorable in the teaching of botany.

Herbaria have been always used mostly by researchers dealing with systematic botany, taxonomy or flora of a certain area, providing insight into the variety of plant taxa and their distribution. Preserved specimens can also be used for molecular and phylogenetic research. In addition to their scientific mission, herbaria play an important role in botanical education. Besides traditional utilization of herbaria, there are a huge possibilities using virtual plant collections as well. The main target of this article is to highlight more important hungarian and worldwide-used plant online resources suitable for botany teaching to the students as well as wide public at Herbarium of Eszterházy Károly University, Eger (EGR).

Essa ciência pode aproximar os estudantes do meio em que vivem e explorar as interações, obtendo o entendimento relevante do papel da sociedade na natureza e, assim, formular novas perguntas e buscar respostas para compreender os fenômenos da natureza e articular o Ensino de Botânica com a intenção de aprender. Desse modo, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo abordar o ensino de Botânica na perspectiva da Alfabetização Científica, por meio de experimentos para alunos do 2° ano do Ensino Fundamental Anos Iniciais, visto que, entender os conceitos biológicos e se interessar pelo mundo dos seres vivos contribuem para as tomadas de decisões de cada indivíduo. Os procedimentos metodológicos para o desenvolvimento desta pesquisa foram pautados nas noções investigativas que estão fundamentadas sob a abordagem qualitativa de pesquisa. A coleta de dados compreendeu as atividades avaliativas desenvolvidas, as quais foram analisadas à luz da Análise Textual Discursiva. Foi possível constatar que as atividades realizadas forneceram aos alunos um expressivo embasamento teórico com conhecimentos científicos sobre a Botânica. Diante do exposto, com base nos eixos estruturantes da Alfabetização Científica pudemos observar evidências de que a Alfabetização Científica está em construção e houve um fortalecimento da cultura científica escolar dentro da sala de aula. Abstract The teaching of Botany allows you to expand knowledge and build scientific knowledge, awakening criticality in students. This science can bring students closer to the environment in which they live and explore interactions, obtaining a relevant understanding of the role of society in nature and, thus, formulating new questions and seeking answers to understand natural phenomena and articulate Botany Teaching with intention to learn. Thus, the present research aimed to address the teaching of Botany from the perspective of Scientific Literacy, through experiments for students in the 2nd year of Elementary School Early Years, since understanding biological concepts and being interested in the world of beings living resources contribute to each individual's decision-making. The methodological procedures for developing this research were based on investigative notions that are based on the qualitative research approach. Data collection comprised the evaluative activities developed, which were analyzed in the light of Discursive Textual Analysis. It was possible to verify that the activities carried out provided students with an expressive theoretical basis with scientific knowledge about Botany. In view of the above, based on the structuring axes of Scientific Literacy, we were able to observe evidence that Scientific Literacy is under construction and there has been a strengthening of school scientific culture within the classroom. Abstract:
The article, based on archival materials, presents the biographical profile of Tetiana Borysivna Vakar (01.11.1943–10.05.2010), a prominent botanist from Uman, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor, and Head of the Department of Botany at the Uman Agricultural Institute (now Uman National University of Horticulture). The article explores the life, scientific contributions, and teaching career of T. B. Vakar, who played a pivotal role in the advancement of scientific research and education within the Department of Botany. Her primary research interests lay in botany. T. B. Vakar’s passion for plants was nurtured from childhood by her father, Professor Borys Anatoliiovych Vakar, a Doctor of Biological Sciences and a leading figure in botany. As the head of a botanical department, he mentored his daughter, who progressed from assistant to associate professor, working alongside him in various agricultural institutes. Over the years, she developed as both a teacher and a scientist, enriching her practical and theoretical knowledge of flora and passing it on to her students. Her family's extensive travels exposed her to diverse floral ecosystems, enhancing her scientific expertise in plant identification and taxonomy. This exposure further refined her research skills. Eventually, Ukraine became the final destination of her professional journey. The rich botanical diversity of Uman, its surroundings, and the remarkable dendrological collections of the Sofiivka Arboretum, adjacent to the Uman Agricultural Institute, profoundly influenced and inspired her work. Teaching remained the cornerstone of T. B. Vakar’s career. Her lectures, laboratory classes, and field practices were distinguished by scientific rigor and pedagogical excellence. For years, she conducted botanical excursions with her students, actively engaging them in the study of local flora. She documented her research findings in numerous scientific publications. According to colleagues and students, Tetiana Borysivna was recognized as a highly skilled botanist, a dedicated educator, and a committed researcher. She consistently integrated theoretical knowledge with practical applications in agricultural production while continuously enhancing her professional expertise. As head of the Department of Botany, she significantly contributed to strengthening the department’s infrastructure, enriching the plant collections of the Botanical Nursery and Herbarium (UM). These collections, now part of the university’s scientific and educational legacy, continue to serve as valuable resources for research and learning. Tetiana Borysivna was widely respected for her professionalism, discipline, and high standards. She maintained tolerance and fairness, holding both herself and her colleagues to exacting standards. Her dedication to botany and education left a lasting impact on the academic and scientific community of Uman.

Abstract:
Geological education plays a major role in the social, economic, and cultural growth and development of any country. India is a vast diversified country with wide-ranging geological features, consisting of rocks of all geological ages with well-developed physiographic divisions. The Indian lithospheric plate is a storehouse of vast georesources and also serves as a natural field laboratory for developing and testing numerous geological principles. The exploration of Indian georesources began in the past; with the organized exploration began way back in the 1830s. The number of institutions offering geological education is, however, comparatively low. Thus, Geology as a science discipline is less popular in comparison with other science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, and Environmental science, based on enrolment data of the learners enrolled in academic sessions from 2011-2012 to 2018-2019 of the Master's degree programs. Analysis indicates that teaching-learning resources of foreign origin are dominantly being adopted as learning resources in the teaching-learning pedagogy of degree programs in Geology, and are over-riding those of Indian origin. The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting geological education in two ways namely, the disruption of conventional (face-to-face) teaching together with not allowing learners of Geology programs to complete their compulsory out-door geological fieldwork assignments. The analysis of data gathered by an online questionnaire survey shows that the use of indigenous open educational resources in Geology appears as a plausible solution to overcome the learning barriers created by the COVID-19 pandemic, and also to enrich teaching-learning resources of Indian origin. This article provides an up-to-date detailed account of the necessity and evolution of geological education, the current popularity of Geology as a science discipline, the nature of available geological teaching-learning resources, the impact of the COVID-19 on geological education, and the role of open educational resources in providing quality and equitable geological education, whilst removing educational barriers created by COVID-19 in India.

Abstract:
Livros didáticos são recursos amplamente utilizados pelos professores. Diante disso, almejou-se qualificar oito volumes de três coleções aprovadas pelo Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD) de Ciências em 2018. Em uma análise do conteúdo de tais obras, foi possível perceber o negligenciamento da botânica em comparação a outras áreas da biologia, por meio de quesitos preestabelecidos. Cada coleção apresentou abordagens mais ou menos satisfatórias com relação aos aspectos abordados, em que apenas a qualidade textual se destacou em 100% dos materiais, seguida por presença de recursos visuais (87,5%), exercícios práticos (62,5%), interdisciplinaridade (50%), aprofundamento no tema (37,5%) e contextualização (25%). Esclarece-se que o objetivo do artigo não foi a busca pelo melhor material, mas a melhoria contínua dos livros que formam a base do conhecimento dos estudantes. Palavras-chave: Livro didático. Ensino de botânica. PNLD. ANALYSIS OF BOTANICAL CONTENT IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BIOLOGY TEXTBOOKS ABSTRACT Textbooks are resources widely used by teachers. In view of this, the aim was to qualify eight volumes from three collections approved by the Brazilian National Textbook Program (PNLD, in Portuguese abbreviation) for Sciences in 2018. In an analysis of the content of such works, it was possible to perceive the neglect of botany in comparison to other areas of biology, through pre-established criteria. Each collection presented more or less satisfactory approaches regarding the aspects covered, in which only the textual quality stood out in 100% of the materials, followed by the presence of visual resources (87.5%), practical exercises (62.5%), interdisciplinarity (50%), in-depth study of the topic (37.5%) and contextualization (25%). Abstract Medicinal plants have played an essential role in human healthcare as essential ingredients in traditional medicines and the combination of novel drugs. The architecture of the green space in the university is mainly aimed at the cultivation of plant species that have an eye-catching application. But the green space including medicinal plants in the university space has both effects on the physical and mental health of people and has a good view. It can also be used for teaching students. Therefore, the architectural style of successful herbal botanical gardens needs to reflect a broad understanding of botany and encourage creative thinking in garden design and interpretation. Medicinal Plants gardens are more than just a “pleasant place to visit” because of their unique combination of resources, and it offers a unique opportunity to use plants for human well-being. As a result, the architectural design of the garden may have an impact on its performance. The purpose of this article is to describe the effect of medicinal plants on people’s health and education, as well as their architectural design in universities.

The trends in the formation of a digital society serve as benchmarks for the current and prospective development of higher pedagogical education. Therefore, one of the goals of biological and ecological education for future teachers is to master modern digital technologies. Federal projects for creating a digital educational environment include the development of digital services and content for educational activities. Thus, the development of distance learning technologies and blended learning has become a crucial condition for the digital transformation of biology and ecology teaching in higher education. The Federal State Educational Standards for Higher Education (FGOS VO) require the learning outcomes to reflect the components of information culture for future biology teachers and bioecologists. This includes skills such as obtaining necessary information from dictionaries, atlases, guides, the ability to navigate various sources of biological information, critically evaluate and interpret information about living and non-living nature in the media and other sources, and the ability to use information and communication technologies in solving practical tasks. In this regard, organizing field practice for biology students in botany under distance learning conditions is an important component in the subject, meta-subject, and methodological preparation of future biology teachers and bioecology specialists. The accessibility of modern information resources to students, including those with limited capabilities and athletes, in any location and time using distance technologies emphasizes the need to improve their information culture. By engaging students remotely in the study of living nature through mobile devices, virtual and augmented reality, university teachers shape their knowledge and skills in botany, ICT competencies, and information culture, which is part of general human culture and an important element in the development of every individual. Objective: To improve the effectiveness of organizing and conducting field practice for bioecology students in botany under conditions of distance and blended learning. Method or Methodology: The publication is based on information, technological, and competency-based pedagogical approaches. The article utilizes group natural science and pedagogical observations, mathematical methods, and the analysis of students’ activities resulting from individual independent collection of plant material with subsequent analysis and chamber processing. Results: Positive results have been obtained, allowing for the recommendation of implementing distance, mobile, and immersive technologies for organizing and conducting field practices in biology. Application Area of Results: The presented results can be applied in conducting educational activities in universities under conditions of blended and inclusive learning, particularly in biology field practices, both online and offline.

Education in the 21st century is required to produce generations who have and master various kinds of skills, one of which is critical thinking skills. Therefore, learning is needed that can prepare students to think critically. One of them is applying local potential-based learning resources developed in popular scientific book teaching materials. This study aims to examine the practicality of the content, the practicality of expectations, and the actual practicality of the popular scientific books developed. The method used is based on Tessmer's formative evaluation design. The results of the research on the readability test obtained results of 87.18% with very good criteria, based on student responses, the results were 89.60% on the practicality of expectations and 92.59% on the actual practicality with very practical criteria, and based on the implementation of popular scientific books that developed which got the results of 92.59% on the implementation of expectations and 96.69% on the actual implementation with a very good category. This result shows that a popular scientific book titled "Types of Plants in the Fabaceae Family with Medicinal Properties in the Banua Botanical Gardens" is very practical to use as enrichment material in the Higher Plant Botany (BTT) course and can improve students' critical thinking skills.Abstrak Pendidikan abad ke-21 dituntut untuk dapat menghasilkan generasi-generasi yang memiliki dan menguasai berbagai macam keterampilan salah satunya adalakah keterampilan berpikir kritis. Oleh karena itu diperlukan pembelajaran yang dapat menyiapkan peserta didik untuk berpikir kritis. Salah satunya dengan menerapkan sumber belajar berbasis potensi lokal yang dikembangkan dalam bahan ajar buku ilmiah populer. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji kepraktisan isi, kepraktisan harapan dan kepraktisan actual dari buku ilmiah populer yang dikembangkan. Metode yang digunakan adalah mengacu pada desain evaluasi formatif dari Tessmer. Hasil penelitian pada uji keterbacaan mendapatkan hasil sebesar 87,18% dengan kriteria sangat baik, berdasarkan respon mahasiswa mendapatkan hasil sebesar 89,60% pada kepraktisan harapan dan 92,59% pada kepraktisan aktual dengan kriteria sangat praktis, dan berdasarkan keterlaksanaan buku ilmiah populer yang dikembangkan yang mendapatkan hasil 92,59% pada keterlaksanaan harapan dan 96,69% pada keterlaksanaan aktual dengan kategori sangat baik. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa buku ilmiah populer dengan judul “Jenis-Jenis Tumbuhan Famili Fabaceae Berkhasiat Obat di Kebun Raya Banua” sangat praktis digunakan sebagai materi pegayaan pada mata kuliah Botani Tumbuhan Tinggi (BTT) serta dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis mahasiswa.

In some cases, the expansion of different fields of Biological Sciences is tied to the crisis of biodiversity and environmental problems, such as the extinction of species, the introduction of invasive exotic species, increasing habitat loss and degradation, the overexploitation of natural resources, pollution, diseases and human-induced climate change.<br />In 2017, Pesquisa e Ensino em Ciências Exatas e da Natureza/Research and Teaching in Exact and Natural Sciences (PECEN) received 28 manuscripts for evaluation and published 18 papers, all related to the field of Biological Sciences. An analysis of the papers published in year shows that the field of Zoology (branch of Biology that studies the animal kingdom) has been the flagship of publications with 7 papers so far. Among the contributions within Zoology published in PECEN are papers involving the following sub-fields of knowledge: (2) Morphology of Recent Groups; (4) Taxonomy of Recent Groups; and (3) “ecological interactions” – phenomenon and object of study also in the field of Ecology. In 2017, PECEN also published important contributions in the fields of Ecology (2), Environmental Sciences (1), Health and Biological Science (1), Mycology (2) and Science Teaching (2).<br />Contributions in the fields of biodiversity and science teaching will undoubtedly continue to play an important role in the scientific production of PECEN in both qualitative and quantitative terms. However, given the vast field of Biological Sciences, we expect a substantial increase in the number of publications on the most diverse subjects in 2018.<br />It is important to emphasize that PECEN is a multidisciplinary journal that receives contributions from diverse fields, such as Agrarian, Biomedical, Chemical, Earth, Environmental, Health and Exact and Natural Sciences. The fundamental mission is to strengthen multidisciplinary publications through scientific and theoretical-methodological studies as well as thematic literature reviews. Regardless of the number of submissions, the main factor for publication in PECEN is the importance and quality of the contributions.

<em>This study aims to identify the potential of Euphorbia hirta as a biological learning resource that can be utilized in educational settings. Euphorbia hirta is a plant commonly found in our surroundings. This plant offers various information that can be used to study plant organ anatomy, morphology, as well as its functions and benefits. The research methodology employs a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis through a literature review. Data sources were obtained from various scientific articles and books that deeply discuss Euphorbia hirta. The data collection process was carried out in three main stages: first, gathering journal articles and books relevant to the topic of Euphorbia hirta; second, organizing the data according to the designed research framework; and third, analyzing the organized data using applicable scientific principles and theories to achieve the research objectives. The analysis results show that Euphorbia hirta has great potential to be used as a biological learning resource, particularly in basic biology courses, plant anatomy, plant morphology, and higher plant botany courses. Utilizing Euphorbia hirta as a learning resource not only enriches the teaching material but also connects students more closely with their surrounding environment.</em>

The study of flower structure is essential in plant identification and in understanding sexual reproduction in plants, pollination syndromes, plant breeding, and fruit structure. Thus, study of flower structure and construction of floral formulae are standard parts of first-year university botany and biology courses. These activities involve developing a complex set of skills, and it is useful for students to review this material after practical sessions. The Virtual Floral Formula Web site provides students with a unique resource for practicing their floral structure interpretation skills. The site provides detailed dissection photographs of the flowers of 12 species, and floral formulae are progressively assembled via drop-down menus. When students are satisfied with their answers, they submit them, and any discrepancies from the ‘‘official’’ formula are highlighted. Students appreciate the interactivity of the application, the feedback they receive on any inaccuracies in their formulae, and the ability to make progressive improvements in their skills.

The Botanic Garden Meise (BR) has been involved in a mass digitization project over the past 2.5 years. At present, over 1.2 million herbarium specimens have been imaged. A third of these images already have minimal data, while the remainder data are presently being captured and should be finished in the coming months. Many lessons have been learned along the way with respect to the pitfalls of implementing mass digitization, both technically and sociologically. Mass digitization has also fundamentally changed the management workflow of our collections. This includes the creation of new protocols to ensure that new and returning material be photographed before being incorporated into already digitized collections, thus ensuring that data are not lost. A new portal has been created following an independent analysis of user requirements. This will result in increased visibility of our collections, making them more discoverable. The new portal provides additional functionality, including unique stable Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) for each specimen and a machine readable version of the data. These identifiers follow the recommendations of the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (http://cetaf.org/cetaf-stable-identifiers). The identifiers are a valuable tool and resource for researchers, but it is incumbent upon them to use this resource responsibly for the citation of specimens. Many research staff have not been actively involved in the mass digitization exercise and need to be educated on its impact and importance. As more and more images and data are linked to publications, they become easier to evaluate and verify. These digital data may also be repurposed in other studies, thus advancing science and herbarium management. As an increased number of institutions place their collections online, the greater this resource becomes for both collection management as well as research, particularly as links between collections become apparent. These links may include improved georeferencing, establishing collector itineraries, and new determinations for duplicate specimens.

Os livros didáticos são desenvolvidos para a utilização escolar, apresentando relevante importância no processo de ensino-aprendizagem e sendo essenciais na formação do estudante, muitas vezes, servindo de auxílio integral ao professor. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar e comparar livros didáticos de Biologia do Ensino Médio com ênfase nas estruturas reprodutivas das angiospermas. Para esta análise, foram comparadas três obras direcionadas ao segundo ano do Ensino Médio, levando em consideração sete critérios: estrutura geral, profundidade do tema, apresentação dos temas, linguagem escrita, imagens, textos complementares e atividades. Os critérios foram analisados por meio de uma avaliação qualitativa e foram classificados em “Atende Plenamente” (APl), “Atende Parcialmente” (APr) e “Não Atende” (NA). Todos os livros possuem pontos fracos e fortes que foram apresentados e discutidos ao longo do texto, sendo que um dos livros se sobressaiu por apresentar uma melhor avaliação dentro dos critérios propostos, sendo considerado, desse modo, o mais adequado para o uso em sala de aula. Os pontos fracos demonstraram que ajustes podem ser realizados e que o processo de avaliação sempre será necessário para aprimoramento do livro, enquanto os pontos fortes demonstraram que este recurso se mantém como material relevante na educação do Brasil. Deduz-se que a utilização de abordagens alternativas no ensino das estruturas reprodutivas das angiospermas é fundamental, ao mesmo tempo em que se ressalta a valorização dos livros como recurso didático. Abstract Textbooks are developed for school use, presenting significant importance in the teaching, and learning process and being essential in the student's training, often serving as comprehensive assistance to the teacher. This work aimed to analyze and compare High School Biology textbooks with an emphasis on the angiosperms’ reproductive structures. For this analysis, three works directed at the second year of High School were compared, taking into consideration seven criteria: overall structure, depth of the topic, presentation of the themes, written language, images, supplementary texts, and activities. The criteria were analyzed through a qualitative evaluation and were classified as "Fully Meets" (APl), "Partial Compliance" (APr), and "Does Not Meet" (NA). All the books have strengths and weaknesses that were presented and discussed throughout the text, with one of the books standing out for receiving a better evaluation within the proposed criteria, thus considered the most suitable for classroom use. The weaknesses demonstrated that adjustments can be made, and the evaluation process will always be necessary for book improvement, while the strengths demonstrated that this resource remains a relevant material in Brazil's education. We deduce that the use of alternative approaches in teaching the angiosperms’ reproductive structures is fundamental, while emphasizing the value of the books as a teaching resource. SynopsisThe successful utilisation of recent advances in plant biotechnology for the benefit of mankind, with the avoidance of fundamental mistakes that could lead to environmental disaster, requires wise and balanced legislation. In addition, the conservation of the habitats and germplasm so essential to plant breeding requires carefully planned management of resources. These, however, depend upon an informed public with a sensitivity to, and knowledge and understanding of, the issues at stake. It is the people, after all, who influence decision making by governments, through the ballot box or through the pressure of public opinion. Botanic Gardens have a vital role to play in public education, and have the capacity to become the shop windows for the whole of plant science.Four examples of public education in plant biology being developed at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are considered, as follows:(i) Public information, as exemplified by the provision of information about plants, lectures about plants and the development of ecological plantings and displays relating to agriculture, plant breeding and conservation.(ii) Contact through art, as exemplified by the Andy Goldsworthy retrospective exhibition of 1990 and the 1991 exhibitions of the work of Redouté and Margaret Stones, in which the media of sculpture and painting inspired by the natural world have been used to build bridges between plant science and the wider public.(iii) Education in primary schools, as exemplified by the ‘Living in a Rainforest’ project, in which young people and their teachers spend periods of time in a replica of a Bornean longhouse and through this experience develop an understanding of the importance of the balance between people and the complex ecosystem of the rainforest.(iv) Education in secondary schools, as exemplified by the Science and Plants for Schools project in which rapid cycling Brassica rapa and other materials are used in the development of new and exciting approaches to the teaching of experimental plant science, genetics and breeding.The ways in which projects such as these can be designed to convey important messages concerning plant breeding, genetic engineering, germplasm and habitat conservation and the role of plants in the world economy are discussed, and ideas for other approaches to public education in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are outlined.

ABSTRACT: This article investigates the influence of the teaching methods used by higher education botany professors on the teaching practices of undergraduates in schools. It is based on the premise that pedagogical approaches, which are often theoretical and content-centered, are reproduced by future educators and contribute to perpetuating botanical imperceptions in society. The aim was to survey the teaching methods used by Biological Sciences undergraduates during their teaching internship to teach botany. Documentary analysis was carried out on the texts of high school internship reports. Content Analysis revealed a predominance of expository-dialogue classes, solving exercises and practical activities, with a preference for the use of playful resources and scientific texts. The creativity of the interns stood out, showing a tendency to propose more interactive and contextualized teaching strategies, breaking with traditional teaching.

Plants are natural resources essential for human survival, with which local populations establish important cultural relationships to meet their basic needs. Such relationships involve local knowledge that is little considered in the pedagogical practices of school education. As a result of this reality, this research focuses on the contribution of the approach of local knowledge of medicinal plants in the teaching of Botany content in a rural school, located in the municipality of Caroebe in Roraima, in 2017. To access the knowledge, we use questionnaires with students from a class of the 2nd year of high school and also, diversified didactic activities were carried out in the approach to the content. We proved that the development of the didactic sequence with local knowledge favored the understanding of the contents of Botany and contributed to the involvement of students in the proposed pedagogical activities.

Genetics occupies central position in biology and directly connects with all its branches. In fact, ‘life’ and ‘non-life’ meet each other in viruses and genes. Technologies emanating from genetics have had immense impact in various areas such as healthcare, agriculture, environment etc. Recent developments in stem cell biology and gene editing technologies not only promise cures for several ailments which were hitherto unthinkable but also raise concerns of irreparable harm that can result from unbridled use of these technologies. Therefore, basic understanding of genetics is necessary for all sections of society. Hence, genetics is now introduced at the school level. However, at least in the Indian context, genetics teaching in classrooms relies largely on blackboard or chart-based explanations. Unlike physics, chemistry and to some extent basic botany and zoology where models or live/preserved specimens are available to demonstrate fundamental concepts under classroom conditions, there is a dearth of material resources for teaching genetics. Maize has a long history of basic and applied genetics where a large number of well-characterized mutant stocks are available. To make learning experience interesting and engaging, we have developed maize genetic resources for use under classroom conditions. In particular, maize cob with seeds segregating for various clearly identifiable phenotypes presents unique opportunity to demonstrate basic genetic principles including statistical and population genetic concepts. In this article we describe these resources and explain how they can be used to demonstrate different concepts.

This study was an attempt to examine the potential of local geography to teach botany as a socioscience. This was done initially through the development of a geographic learning package (GLP) for plant taxonomy and ecology as the medium for socioscientific teaching and second, in the testing for the significant effect of a socioscientific approach of teaching botany using GLP (SATGLP) to second year college students' learning performance and attitudes. Printed and non-printed documents of Davao Oriental geography, instructor-assembled standardized test questions for student learning performance and attitude scale for student attitudes, and expert judgment, classroom try-out of student responses for the validity and reliability of the learning package were used as instruments in the study. The 42 students in both control and experimental classes were found comparable in age, existing knowledge and acquired attitudes in science. One biology instructor taught both classes in the third quarter of the second semester, November – March 1999. Mean judgment ratings on the validity of the development of GLP indicated that it was more than satisfactory. It was able to use three main geographic elements: the physical features, natural resources and the socio-cultural characteristics of Davao Oriental for motivating, problem situation, and in contextualizing exercises and examples. On the other hand, t-test means showed that SATGLP is significantly different from the control only in the mean gain scores of the learning performance of students. The attitudes were significantly different only in the pretest scores of students.

The Department of Botany on the Potchefstroom Campus (formerly Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education) of the North-West University (NWU) had its centenary in 2020. In this paper we celebrate this milestone by giving an overview of the history of the Department at this campus, including its recent establishment and expansion on the NWU Mahikeng Campus (formerly the University of North-West). A brief overview is presented of the advances in teaching and research over the years, and the development and relevance of the important plant collections in the botanical garden, two herbaria and the national diatom collection. The main emphasis of this contribution is, however, a reflection on the advancement and significance of research conducted by various disciplines on plant and algae function, diversity and ecological restoration over the years. The different disciplines in Botany at NWU, from the oldest to the more recent, are Plant Taxonomy, Plant Ecophysiology, Terrestrial Plant Ecology, Aquatic Sciences, Urban and Settlement Ecology, Geoecology, and Proteomics. Different aspects contributing to changes occurring in the environment, such as pollution, land degradation, urbanisation, overexploitation of resources and the subsequent effect of these on plant diversity and function are especially addressed in our current research. The results of our research inter alia led to solutions for problems occurring in the landscape and contribute to the well-being of the people using the land and water by restoring important ecosystem services.

The teaching of Botany is inserted in the context of Biological Sciences graduate courses. Among students, Botany is one of the areas with the greatest difficulty in learning. College students should be exposed to classes that treat the ecosystem as part of an integrated environmental education program. To examine this proposition, practical activities were carried out at Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca (PEPB) and at Parque Nacional da Tijuca, State Conservation Units of Rio de Janeiro, which represent part of the rich Brazilian biodiversity. More specifically, the present paper suggests that field classes along an ecological trail could be an invaluable pedagogical alternative toward increasing students’ interest in Botany. Here, we considered plant biodiversity, litterfall, ecological relationships, morphological features and plant physiology and secondary metabolites. After the ecological trail walk, we applied a questionnaire to get students’ impressions most of which were very favorable to the field classes as a didactic resource. Most students had the first contact with a Conservation Unit of Atlantic Forest through this practice, and learned botanical and environmental aspects in situ. Consequently, we can recommend that tracks can contribute to the teaching of Botany and to a multidisciplinary approach. Besides improving student engagement and the quality of the teaching-learning process.

Introduction. Collections of living medicinal plants perform a multifunctional role: educational, educational, research, environmental, and others. The formation of a pharmacy garden at universities is a task of high relevance. At the same time, the current Federal State Educational Standards of various levels require students to carry out individual projects. “Apothecary's Garden” is a promising and relevant group activity for students. The aim. To develop a structured algorithm for organizing a group student project “Apothecary's garden”. Material and methods. The work is based on real educational experience in the implementation of personal projects in Moscow educational institutions: Moscow University “Synergy” and “Sechenov University” for the period 2020–2024. The following methods were used: structured interviewing of the teaching staff (n=12), questioning of student participants (n=95), analysis of educational and methodological documentation, expert analysis of the effectiveness of implemented initiatives. The control parameters included: the level of student engagement, educational effectiveness, and the stability of the functioning of the created facilities. The results of the study. The main directions of personal developments within the framework of teamwork have been identified: schemes for the placement of medicinal plants according to classification principles (botany, biology, pharmacology, chemistry, etc.); practical application options for research, the educational process, the social sphere; promotion through web resources and social media. A step-by-step algorithm is presented: selecting the topic and title; determining the target audience; setting goals and objectives; developing an implementation plan; selecting methods, resources, and evaluation criteria. Limitations and coping strategies have been identified. Recommendations for the presentation are given. The functionality of the Aptekarsky Ogorod complex being created is described. Conclusion. The result of the project is an incentive for the development of participants, it should be focused on expanding competencies and developing professional skills. The name should be bright, emotionally appealing, preferably with a memorable abbreviation. Adaptability is required – the possibility of adjustments during operation is provided. It is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of perception by different audiences, including when preparing a presentation for the competition committee, the target audience, and society as a whole

This essay argues for the value of teaching Charlotte Lennoxs periodical The Ladys Museum (1760-61) in undergraduate literature, history, media studies, postcolonial, and gender studies classrooms. Lennoxs magazine, which includes one of the first serialized novels Harriot and Sophia (later published as the stand-alone novel Sophia (1762)) encouraged debate of the proto-discipline topics of history, geography, literary criticism, astronomy, botany, and zoology. This essay offers a flexible teaching module, which can be taught in one to five days, that focuses on the themes of early female education and imperialism using full or excerpted portions of essays from the eidolon, Of the Studies Proper for Women, Of the Importance of the Education of Daughters, Philosophy for the Ladies, The Metamorphoses of Animals, and the Several Changes Observable in Animal Life, The Natural History of the Formica-Leo, or Lion Pismire, Some Reflections and Deductions Drawn from the Works of Nature in General, The Ladys Geography, The Original Inhabitants of Great Britain, The History of the Princess Padmani, and as well as Lennoxs serialized novel Sophia (1762). Por una parte, se analizan sus características técnicas, funcionamiento, así como también su función didáctica y contenidos asociados. Abstract Anatomical models were widely used in the teaching of natural history between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. Nowadays, they still are an important didactic resource in many historical institutions of secondary school education and museums in Spain. We study the three-dimensional models of the French firm Les Fils d’Émile Deyrolle, which offered a reproduction of organisms and structures related to botany. We focused our study on one of the most complete collection - kept in the historic laboratory of biology of the University of Murcia. Its technical characteristics, functioning, as well as its didactic function and associated contents have been included in our analysis.

Historians have often been compared with detectives; searching for clues as evidence of a mystery they are seeking to solve. I would prefer an association with food, making history like a trained cook who blends particular ingredients, some fresh, some traditional, using specific methods to create an object that is consumed. There are primary sources, fresh and raw ingredients that you often have to go to great lengths to procure, and secondary sources, prepared initially by someone else. The same recipe may yield different meals, the same meal may provoke different responses. On a continuum of approaches to history and food, there are those who approach both as a scientific endeavour and, at the other end of the spectrum, those who make history and food as art. Brought together, it is possible to see cookbooks as history in at least two important ways; they give meaning to the past by representing culinary heritage and they are in themselves sources of history as documents and blueprints for experiences that can be interpreted to represent the past. Many people read cookbooks and histories with no intention of preparing the meal or becoming a historian. I do a little of both. I enjoy reading history and cookbooks for pleasure but, as a historian, I also read them interchangeably; histories to understand cookbooks and cookbooks to find out more about the past. History and the past are different of course, despite their use in the English language. It is not possible to relive the past, we can only interpret it through the traces that remain. Even if a reader had an exact recipe and an antique stove, vegetables grown from heritage seeds in similar conditions, eggs and grains from the same region and employed the techniques his or her grandparents used, they could not replicate their experience of a meal. Undertaking those activities though would give a reader a sense of that experience. Active examination of the past is possible through the processes of research and writing, but it will always be an interpretation and not a reproduction of the past itself. Nevertheless, like other histories, cookbooks can convey a sense of what was important in a culture, and what contemporaries might draw on that can resonate a cultural past and make the food palatable. The way people eat relates to how they apply ideas and influences to the material resources and knowledge they have. Used in this way, cookbooks provide a rich and valuable way to look at the past. Histories, like cookbooks, are written in the present, inspired and conditioned by contemporary issues and attitudes and values. Major shifts in interpretation or new directions in historical studies have more often arisen from changes in political or theoretical preoccupations, generated by contemporary social events, rather than the recovery of new information. Likewise, the introduction of new ingredients or methods rely on contemporary acceptance, as well as familiarity. How particular versions of history and new recipes promote both the past and present is the concern of this paper. My focus below will be on the nineteenth century, although a much larger study would reveal the circumstances that separated that period from the changes that followed. Until the late nineteenth century Australians largely relied on cookbooks that were brought with them from England and on their own private recipe collection, and that influenced to a large extent the sort of food that they ate, although of course they had to improvise by supplementing with local ingredients. In the first book of recipes that was published in Australia, The English and Australian Cookery Book that appeared in 1864, Edward Abbott evoked the ‘roast beef of old England Oh’ (Bannerman, Dictionary). The use of such a potent symbol of English identity in the nineteenth century may seem inevitable, and colonists who could afford them tended to use their English cookbooks and the ingredients for many years, even after Abbott’s publication. New ingredients, however, were often adapted to fit in with familiar culinary expectations in the new setting. Abbott often drew on native and exotic ingredients to produce very familiar dishes that used English methods and principles: things like kangaroo stuffed with beef suet, breadcrumbs, parsley, shallots, marjoram, thyme, nutmeg, pepper, salt, cayenne, and egg. It was not until the 1890s that a much larger body of Australian cookbooks became available, but by this time the food supply was widely held to be secure and abundant and the cultivation of exotic foods in Australia like wheat and sheep and cattle had established a long and familiar food supply for English colonists. Abbott’s cookbook provides a record of the culinary heritage settlers brought with them to Australia and the contemporary circumstances they had to adapt to. Mrs Beeton’s Cookery Book and Household Guide is an example of the popularity of British cookbooks in Australia. Beeton’s Kangaroo Tail Curry was included in the Australian cooking section of her household management (2860). In terms of structure it is important for historians as one of the first times, because Beeton started writing in the 1860s, that ingredients were clearly distinguished from the method. This actually still presents considerable problems for publishers. There is debate about whether that should necessarily be the case, because it takes up so much space on the page. Kangaroo Tail CurryIngredients:1 tail2 oz. Butter1 tablespoon of flour1 tablespoon of curry2 onions sliced1 sour apple cut into dice1 desert spoon of lemon juice3/4 pint of stocksaltMethod:Wash, blanch and dry the tail thoroughly and divide it at the joints. Fry the tail in hot butter, take it up, put it in the sliced onions, and fry them for 3 or 4 minutes without browning. Sprinkle in the flour and curry powder, and cook gently for at least 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the stock, apple, salt to taste, bring to the boil, stirring meanwhile, and replace the tail in the stew pan. Cover closely, and cook gently until tender, then add the lemon juice and more seasoning if necessary. Arrange the pieces of tail on a hot dish, strain the sauce over, and serve with boiled rice.Time: 2-3 hoursSufficient for 1 large dish. Although the steps are not clearly distinguished from each other the method is more systematic than earlier recipes. Within the one sentence, however, there are still two or three different sorts of tasks. The recipe also requires to some extent a degree of discretion, knowledge and experience of cooking. Beeton suggests adding things to taste, cooking something until it is tender, so experience or knowledge is necessary to fulfil the recipe. The meal also takes between two and three hours, which would be quite prohibitive for a lot of contemporary cooks. New recipes, like those produced in Delicious have recipes that you can do in ten minutes or half an hour. Historically, that is a new development that reveals a lot about contemporary conditions. By 1900, Australian interest in native food had pretty much dissolved from the record of cookbooks, although this would remain a feature of books for the English public who did not need to distinguish themselves from Indigenous people. Mrs Beeton’s Cookery Book and Household Guide gave a selection of Australian recipes but they were primarily for the British public rather than the assumption that they were being cooked in Australia: kangaroo tail soup was cooked in the same way as ox tail soup; roast wallaby was compared to hare. The ingredients were wallaby, veal, milk and butter; and parrot pie was said to be not unlike one made of pigeons. The novelty value of such ingredients may have been of interest, rather than their practical use. However, they are all prepared in ways that would make them fairly familiar to European tastes. Introducing something new with the same sorts of ingredients could therefore proliferate the spread of other foods. The means by which ingredients were introduced to different regions reflects cultural exchanges, historical processes and the local environment. The adaptation of recipes to incorporate local ingredients likewise provides information about local traditions and contemporary conditions. Starting to see those ingredients as a two-way movement between looking at what might have been familiar to people and what might have been something that they had to do make do with because of what was necessarily available to them at that time tells us about their past as well as the times they are living in. Differences in the level of practical cooking knowledge also have a vital role to play in cookbook literature. Colin Bannerman has suggested that the shortage of domestic labour in Australia an important factor in supporting the growth of the cookbook industry in the late nineteenth century. The poor quality of Australian cooking was also an occasional theme in the press during the same time. The message was generally the same: bad food affected Australians’ physical, domestic, social and moral well-being and impeded progress towards civilisation and higher culture. The idea was really that Australians had to learn how to cook. Colin Bannerman (Acquired Tastes 19) explains the rise of domestic science in Australia as a product of growing interest in Australian cultural development and the curse of bad cookery, which encouraged support for teaching girls and women how to cook. Domestic Economy was integrated into the Victorian and New South Wales curriculum by the end of the nineteenth century. Australian women have faced constant criticism of their cooking skills but the decision to teach cooking shouldn’t necessarily be used to support that judgement. Placed in a broader framework is possible to see the support for a modern, scientific approach to food preparation as part of both the elevation of science and systematic knowledge in society more generally, and a transnational movement to raise the status of women’s role in society. It would also be misleading not to consider the transnational context. Australia’s first cookery teachers were from Britain. The domestic-science movement there can be traced to the congress on domestic economy held in Manchester in 1878, at roughly the same time as the movement was gaining strength in Australia. By the 1890s domestic economy was widely taught in both British and Australian schools, without British women facing the same denigration of their cooking skills. Other comparisons with Britain also resulted from Australia’s colonial heritage. People often commented on the quality of the ingredients in Australia and said they were more widely available than they were in England but much poorer in quality. Cookbooks emerged as a way of teaching people. Among the first to teach cookery skills was Mina Rawson, author of The Antipodean Cookery Book and the Kitchen Companion first published in 1885. The book was a compilation of her own recipes and remedies, and it organised and simplified food preparation for the ordinary housewife. But the book also included directions and guidance on things like household tasks and how to cure diseases. Cookbooks therefore were not completely distinct from other aspects of everyday life. They offered much more than culinary advice on how to cook a particular meal and can similarly be used by historians to comment on more than food. Mrs Rawson also knew that people had to make do. She included a lot of bush foods that you still do not get in a lot of Australian meals, ingredients that people could substitute for the English ones they were used to like pig weed. By the end of the nineteenth century cooking had become a recognised classroom subject, providing early training in domestic service, and textbooks teaching Australians how to cook also flourished. Measurements became much more uniform, the layout of cookbooks became more standardised and the procedure was clearly spelled out. This allowed companies to be able to sell their foods because it also meant that you could duplicate the recipes and they could potentially taste the same. It made cookbooks easier to use. The audience for these cookbooks were mostly young women directed to cooking as a way of encouraging social harmony. Cooking was elevated in lots of ways at this stage as a social responsibility. Cookbooks can also be seen as a representation of domestic life, and historically this prescribed the activities of men and women as being distinct The dominance of women in cookbooks in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries attested to the strength of that idea of separate spheres. The consequences of this though has been debated by historians: whether having that particular kind of market and the identification that women were making with each other also provided a forum for women’s voices and so became quite significant in women’s politics at a later date. Cookbooks have been a strategic marketing device for products and appliances. By the beginning of the twentieth century food companies began to print recipes on their packets and to release their own cookbooks to promote their products. Davis Gelatine produced its first free booklet in 1904 and other companies followed suit (1937). The largest gelatine factory was in New South Wales and according to Davis: ‘It bathed in sunshine and freshened with the light breezes of Botany all year round.’ These were the first lavishly illustrated Australian cookbooks. Such books were an attempt to promote new foods and also to sell local foods, many of which were overproduced – such as milk, and dried fruits – which provides insights into the supply chain. Cookbooks in some ways reflected the changing tastes of the public, their ideas, what they were doing and their own lifestyle. But they also helped to promote some of those sorts of changes too. Explaining the reason for cooking, Isabella Beeton put forward an historical account of the shift towards increasing enjoyment of it. She wrote: "In the past, only to live has been the greatest object of mankind, but by and by comforts are multiplied and accumulating riches create new wants. The object then is to not only live but to live economically, agreeably, tastefully and well. Accordingly the art of cookery commences and although the fruits of the earth, the fowls of the air, the beasts of the field and the fish of the sea are still the only food of mankind, yet these are so prepared, improved and dressed by skill and ingenuity that they are the means of immeasurably extending the boundaries of human enjoyment. Everything that is edible and passes under the hands of cooks is more or less changed and assumes new forms, hence the influence of that functionary is immense upon the happiness of the household" (1249). Beeton anticipates a growing trend not just towards cooking and eating but an interest in what sustains cooking as a form of recreation. The history of cookbook publishing provides a glimpse into some of those things. The points that I have raised provide a means for historians to use cookbooks. Cookbooks can be considered in terms of what was eaten, by whom and how: who prepared the food, so to whom the books were actually directed? Clever books like Isabella Beeton’s were directed at both domestic servants and at wives, which gave them quite a big market. There are also changes in the inclusion of themes. Economy and frugality becomes quite significant, as do organisation and management at different times. Changes in the extent of detail, changes in authorship, whether it is women, men, doctors, health professionals, home economists and so on all reflect contemporary concerns. Many books had particular purposes as well, used to fund raise or promote a particular perspective, relate food reform and civic life which gives them a political agenda. Promotional literature produced by food and kitchen equipment companies were a form of advertising and quite significant to the history of cookbook publishing in Australia. Other themes include the influence of cookery school and home economics movements; advice on etiquette and entertaining; the influence of immigration and travel; the creation of culinary stars and authors of which we are all fairly familiar. Further themes include changes in ingredients, changes in advice about health and domestic medicine, and the impact of changes in social consciousness. It is necessary to place those changes in a more general historical context, but for a long time cookbooks have been ignored as a source of information in their own right about the period in which they were published and the kinds of social and political changes that we can see coming through. More than this active process of cooking with the books as well becomes a way of imagining the past in quite different ways than historians are often used to. Cookbooks are not just sources for historians, they are histories in themselves. The privileging of written and visual texts in postcolonial studies has meant other senses, taste and smell, are frequently neglected; and yet the cooking from historical cookbooks can provide an embodied, sensorial image of the past. From nineteenth century cookbooks it is possible to see that British foods were central to the colonial identity project in Australia, but the fact that “British” culinary culture was locally produced, challenges the idea of an “authentic” British cuisine which the colonies tried to replicate. By the time Abbot was advocating rabbit curry as an Australian family meal, back “at home” in England, it was not authentic Indian food but the British invention of curry power that was being incorporated into English cuisine culture. More than cooks, cookbook authors told a narrative that forged connections and disconnections with the past. They reflected the contemporary period and resonated with the culinary heritage of their readers. Introduction Many destinations promote culinary encounters. Foods and beverages, and especially how these will taste in situ, are being marketed as niche travel motivators and used in destination brand building across the globe. While initial usage of the term culinary tourism focused on experiencing exotic cultures of foreign destinations by sampling unfamiliar food and drinks, the term has expanded to embrace a range of leisure travel experiences where the aim is to locate and taste local specialities as part of a pleasurable, and hopefully notable, culinary encounter (Wolf). Long’s foundational work was central in developing the idea of culinary tourism as an active endeavor, suggesting that via consumption, individuals construct unique experiences. Ignatov and Smith’s literature review-inspired definition confirms the nature of activity as participatory, and adds consuming food production skills—from observing agriculture and local processors to visiting food markets and attending cooking schools—to culinary purchases. Despite importing almost all of its foodstuffs and beverages, including some of its water, Singapore is an acknowledged global leader in culinary tourism. Horng and Tsai note that culinary tourism conceptually implies that a transferal of “local or special knowledge and information that represent local culture and identities” (41) occurs via these experiences. This article adds the act of reading to these participatory activities and suggests that, because food writing forms an important component of Singapore’s suite of culinary tourism offerings, taste contributes to the cultural experience offered to both visitors and locals. While Singapore foodways have attracted significant scholarship (see, for instance, work by Bishop; Duruz; Huat &amp; Rajah; Tarulevicz, Eating), Singapore food writing, like many artefacts of popular culture, has attracted less notice. Yet, this writing is an increasingly visible component of cultural production of, and about, Singapore, and performs a range of functions for locals, tourists and visitors before they arrive. Although many languages are spoken in Singapore, English is the national language (Alsagoff) and this study focuses on food writing in English. Background Tourism comprises a major part of Singapore’s economy, with recent figures detailing that food and beverage sales contribute over 10 per cent of this revenue, with spend on culinary tours and cookery classes, home wares such as tea-sets and cookbooks, food magazines and food memoirs additional to this (Singapore Government). This may be related to the fact that Singapore not only promotes food as a tourist attraction, but also actively promotes itself as an exceptional culinary destination. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) includes food in its general information brochures and websites, and its print, television and cinema commercials (Huat and Rajah). It also mounts information-rich campaigns both abroad and inside Singapore. The 2007 ‘Singapore Seasons’ campaign, for instance, promoted Singaporean cuisine alongside films, design, books and other cultural products in London, New York and Beijing. Touring cities identified as key tourist markets in 2011, the ‘Singapore Takeout’ pop-up restaurant brought the taste of Singaporean foods into closer focus. Singaporean chefs worked with high profile locals in its kitchen in a custom-fabricated shipping container to create and demonstrate Singaporean dishes, attracting public and media interest. In country, the STB similarly actively promotes the tastes of Singaporean foods, hosting the annual World Gourmet Summit (Chaney and Ryan) and Pacific Food Expo, both attracting international culinary professionals to work alongside local leaders. The Singapore Food Festival each July is marketed to both locals and visitors. In these ways, the STB, as well as providing events for visitors, is actively urging Singaporeans to proud of their food culture and heritage, so that each Singaporean becomes a proactive ambassador of their cuisine. Singapore Food Writing Popular print guidebooks and online guides to Singapore pay significantly more attention to Singaporean food than they do for many other destinations. Sections on food in such publications discuss at relative length the taste of Singaporean food (always delicious) as well as how varied, authentic, hygienic and suited-to-all-budgets it is. These texts also recommend hawker stalls and food courts alongside cafés and restaurants (Henderson et al.), and a range of other culinary experiences such as city and farm food tours and cookery classes. This writing describes not only what can be seen or learned during these experiences, but also what foods can be sampled, and how these might taste. This focus on taste is reflected in the printed materials that greet the in-bound tourist at the airport. On a visit in October 2013, arrival banners featuring mouth-watering images of local specialities such as chicken rice and chilli crab marked the route from arrival to immigration and baggage collection. Even advertising for a bank was illustrated with photographs of luscious-looking fruits. The free maps and guidebooks available featured food-focused tours and restaurant locations, and there were also substantial free booklets dedicated solely to discussing local delicacies and their flavours, plus recommended locations to sample them. A website and free mobile app were available that contain practical information about dishes, ingredients, cookery methods, and places to eat, as well as historical and cultural information. These resources are also freely distributed to many hotels and popular tourist destinations. Alongside organising food walks, bus tours and cookery classes, the STB also recommends the work of a number of Singaporean food writers—principally prominent Singapore food bloggers, reviewers and a number of memoirists—as authentic guides to what are described as unique Singaporean flavours. The strategies at the heart of this promotion are linking advertising to useful information. At a number of food centres, for instance, STB information panels provide details about both specific dishes and Singapore’s food culture more generally (Henderson et al.). This focus is apparent at many tourist destinations, many of which are also popular local attractions. In historic Fort Canning Park, for instance, there is a recreation of Raffles’ experimental garden, established in 1822, where he grew the nutmeg, clove and other plants that were intended to form the foundation for spice plantations but were largely unsuccessful (Reisz). Today, information panels not only indicate the food plants’ names and how to grow them, but also their culinary and medicinal uses, recipes featuring them and the related food memories of famous Singaporeans. The Singapore Botanic Gardens similarly houses the Ginger Garden displaying several hundred species of ginger and information, and an Eco(-nomic/logical) Garden featuring many food plants and their stories. In Chinatown, panels mounted outside prominent heritage brands (often still quite small shops) add content to the shopping experience. A number of museums profile Singapore’s food culture in more depth. The National Museum of Singapore has a permanent Living History gallery that focuses on Singapore’s street food from the 1950s to 1970s. This display includes food-related artefacts, interactive aromatic displays of spices, films of dishes being made and eaten, and oral histories about food vendors, all supported by text panels and booklets. Here food is used to convey messages about the value of Singapore’s ethnic diversity and cross-cultural exchanges. Versions of some of these dishes can then be sampled in the museum café (Time Out Singapore). The Peranakan Museum—which profiles the unique hybrid culture of the descendants of the Chinese and South Indian traders who married local Malay women—shares this focus, with reconstructed kitchens and dining rooms, exhibits of cooking and eating utensils and displays on food’s ceremonial role in weddings and funerals all supported with significant textual information. The Chinatown Heritage Centre not only recreates food preparation areas as a vivid indicator of poor Chinese immigrants’ living conditions, but also houses The National Restaurant of Singapore, which translates this research directly into meals that recreate the heritage kopi tiam (traditional coffee shop) cuisine of Singapore in the 1930s, purposefully bringing taste into the service of education, as its descriptive menu states, “educationally delighting the palate” (Chinatown Heritage Centre). These museums recognise that shopping is a core tourist activity in Singapore (Chang; Yeung et al.). Their gift- and bookshops cater to the culinary tourist by featuring quality culinary products for sale (including, for instance, teapots and cups, teas, spices and traditional sweets, and other foods) many of which are accompanied by informative tags or brochures. At the centre of these curated, purchasable collections are a range written materials: culinary magazines, cookbooks, food histories and memoirs, as well as postcards and stationery printed with recipes. Food Magazines Locally produced food magazines cater to a range of readerships and serve to extend the culinary experience both in, and outside, Singapore. These include high-end gourmet, luxury lifestyle publications like venerable monthly Wine &amp; Dine: The Art of Good Living, which, in in print for almost thirty years, targets an affluent readership (Wine &amp; Dine). The magazine runs features on local dining, gourmet products and trends, as well as international epicurean locations and products. Beautifully illustrated recipes also feature, as the magazine declares, “we’ve recognised that sharing more recipes should be in the DNA of Wine &amp; Dine’s editorial” (Wine &amp; Dine). Appetite magazine, launched in 2006, targets the “new and emerging generation of gourmets—foodies with a discerning and cosmopolitan outlook, broad horizons and a insatiable appetite” (Edipresse Asia) and is reminiscent in much of its styling of New Zealand’s award-winning Cuisine magazine. Its focus is to present a fresh approach to both cooking at home and dining out, as readers are invited to “Whip up the perfect soufflé or feast with us at the finest restaurants in Singapore and around the region” (Edipresse Asia). Chefs from leading local restaurants are interviewed, and the voices of “fellow foodies and industry watchers” offer an “insider track” on food-related news: “what’s good and what’s new” (Edipresse Asia). In between these publications sits Epicure: Life’s Refinements, which features local dishes, chefs, and restaurants as well as an overseas travel section and a food memories column by a featured author. Locally available ingredients are also highlighted, such as abalone (Cheng) and an interesting range of mushrooms (Epicure). While there is a focus on an epicurean experience, this is presented slightly more casually than in Wine &amp; Dine. Food &amp; Travel focuses more on home cookery, but each issue also includes reviews of Singapore restaurants. The bimonthly bilingual (Chinese and English) Gourmet Living features recipes alongside a notable focus on food culture—with food history columns, restaurant reviews and profiles of celebrated chefs. An extensive range of imported international food magazines are also available, with those from nearby Malaysia and Indonesia regularly including articles on Singapore. Cookbooks These magazines all include reviews of cookery books including Singaporean examples – and some feature other food writing such as food histories, memoirs and blogs. These reviews draw attention to how many Singaporean cookbooks include a focus on food history alongside recipes. Cookery teacher Yee Soo Leong’s 1976 Singaporean Cooking was an early example of cookbook as heritage preservation. This 1976 book takes an unusual view of ‘Singaporean’ flavours. Beginning with sweet foods—Nonya/Singaporean and western cakes, biscuits, pies, pastries, bread, desserts and icings—it also focuses on both Singaporean and Western dishes. This text is also unusual as there are only 6 lines of direct authorial address in the author’s acknowledgements section. Expatriate food writer Wendy Hutton’s Singapore Food, first published in 1979, reprinted many times after and revised in 2007, has long been recognised as one of the most authoritative titles on Singapore’s food heritage. Providing an socio-historical map of Singapore’s culinary traditions, some one third of the first edition was devoted to information about Singaporean multi-cultural food history, including detailed profiles of a number of home cooks alongside its recipes. Published in 1980, Kenneth Mitchell’s A Taste of Singapore is clearly aimed at a foreign readership, noting the variety of foods available due to the racial origins of its inhabitants. The more modest, but equally educational in intent, Hawkers Flavour: A Guide to Hawkers Gourmet in Malaysia and Singapore (in its fourth printing in 1998) contains a detailed introductory essay outlining local food culture, favourite foods and drinks and times these might be served, festivals and festive foods, Indian, Indian Muslim, Chinese, Nyonya (Chinese-Malay), Malay and Halal foods and customs, followed with a selection of recipes from each. More contemporary examples of such information-rich cookbooks, such as those published in the frequently reprinted Periplus Mini Cookbook series, are sold at tourist attractions. Each of these modestly priced, 64-page, mouthwateringly illustrated booklets offer framing information, such as about a specific food culture as in the Nonya kitchen in Nonya Favourites (Boi), and explanatory glossaries of ingredients, as in Homestyle Malay Cooking (Jelani). Most recipes include a boxed paragraph detailing cookery or ingredient information that adds cultural nuance, as well as trying to describe tastes that the (obviously foreign) intended reader may not have encountered. Malaysian-born Violet Oon, who has been called the Julia Child of Singapore (Bergman), writes for both local and visiting readers. The FOOD Paper, published monthly for a decade from January 1987 was, she has stated, then “Singapore’s only monthly publication dedicated to the CSF—Certified Singapore Foodie” (Oon, Violet Oon Cooks 7). Under its auspices, Oon promoted her version of Singaporean cuisine to both locals and visitors, as well as running cookery classes and culinary events, hosting her own television cooking series on the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, and touring internationally for the STB as a ‘Singapore Food Ambassador’ (Ahmad; Kraal). Taking this representation of flavor further, Oon has also produced a branded range of curry powders, spices, and biscuits, and set up a number of food outlets. Her first cookbook, World Peranakan Cookbook, was published in 1978. Her Singapore: 101 Meals of 1986 was commissioned by the STB, then known as the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board. Violet Oon Cooks, a compilation of recipes from The FOOD Paper, published in 1992, attracted a range of major international as well as Singaporean food sponsors, and her Timeless Recipes, published in 1997, similarly aimed to show how manufactured products could be incorporated into classic Singaporean dishes cooked at home. In 1998, Oon produced A Singapore Family Cookbook featuring 100 dishes. Many were from Nonya cuisine and her following books continued to focus on preserving heritage Singaporean recipes, as do a number of other nationally-cuisine focused collections such as Joyceline Tully and Christopher Tan’s Heritage Feasts: A Collection of Singapore Family Recipes. Sylvia Tan’s Singapore Heritage Food: Yesterday’s Recipes for Today’s Cooks, published in 2004, provides “a tentative account of Singapore’s food history” (5). It does this by mapping the various taste profiles of six thematically-arranged chronologically-overlapping sections, from the heritage of British colonialism, to the uptake of American and Russia foods in the Snackbar era of the 1960s and the use of convenience flavoring ingredients such as curry pastes, sauces, dried and frozen supermarket products from the 1970s. Other Volumes Other food-themed volumes focus on specific historical periods. Cecilia Leong-Salobir’s Food Culture in Colonial Asia: A Taste of Empire discusses the “unique hybrid” (1) cuisine of British expatriates in Singapore from 1858 to 1963. In 2009, the National Museum of Singapore produced the moving Wong Hong Suen’s Wartime Kitchen: Food and Eating in Singapore 1942–1950. This details the resilience and adaptability of both diners and cooks during the Japanese Occupation and in post-war Singapore, when shortages stimulated creativity. There is a centenary history of the Cold Storage company which shipped frozen foods all over south east Asia (Boon) and location-based studies such as Annette Tan’s Savour Chinatown: Stories Memories &amp; Recipes. Tan interviewed hawkers, chefs and restaurant owners, working from this information to write both the book’s recipes and reflect on Chinatown’s culinary history. Food culture also features in (although it is not the main focus) more general book-length studies such as educational texts such as Chew Yen Fook’s The Magic of Singapore and Melanie Guile’s Culture in Singapore (2000). Works that navigate both spaces (of Singaporean culture more generally and its foodways) such Lily Kong’s Singapore Hawker Centres: People, Places, Food, provide an consistent narrative of food in Singapore, stressing its multicultural flavours that can be enjoyed from eateries ranging from hawker stalls to high-end restaurants that, interestingly, that agrees with that promulgated in the food writing discussed above. Food Memoirs and Blogs Many of these narratives include personal material, drawing on the author’s own food experiences and taste memories. This approach is fully developed in the food memoir, a growing sub-genre of Singapore food writing. While memoirs by expatriate Singaporeans such as Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan’s A Tiger in the Kitchen: A Memoir of Food and Family, produced by major publisher Hyperion in New York, has attracted considerable international attention, it presents a story of Singapore cuisine that agrees with such locally produced texts as television chef and food writer Terry Tan’s Stir-fried and Not Shaken: A Nostalgic Trip Down Singapore’s Memory Lane and the food memoir of the Singaporean chef credited with introducing fine Malay dining to Singapore, Aziza Ali’s Sambal Days, Kampong Cuisine, published in Singapore in 2013 with the support of the National Heritage Board. All these memoirs are currently available in Singapore in both bookshops and a number of museums and other attractions. While underscoring the historical and cultural value of these foods, all describe the unique flavours of Singaporean cuisine and its deliciousness. A number of prominent Singapore food bloggers are featured in general guidebooks and promoted by the STB as useful resources to dining out in Singapore. One of the most prominent of these is Leslie Tay, a medical doctor and “passionate foodie” (Knipp) whose awardwinning ieatŸishootŸipost is currently attracting some 90,000 unique visitors every month and has had over 20,000 million hits since its launch in 2006. An online diary of Tay’s visits to hundreds of Singaporean hawker stalls, it includes descriptions and photographs of meals consumed, creating accumulative oral culinary histories of these dishes and those who prepared them. These narratives have been reorganised and reshaped in Tay’s first book The End of Char Kway Teow and Other Hawker Mysteries, where each chapter tells the story of one particular dish, including recommended hawker stalls where it can be enjoyed. Ladyironchef.com is a popular food and travel site that began as a blog in 2007. An edited collection of reviews of eateries and travel information, many by the editor himself, the site features lists of, for example, the best cafes (LadyIronChef “Best Cafes”), eateries at the airport (LadyIronChef “Guide to Dining”), and hawker stalls (Lim). While attesting to the cultural value of these foods, many articles also discuss flavour, as in Lim’s musings on: ‘how good can chicken on rice taste? … The glistening grains of rice perfumed by fresh chicken stock and a whiff of ginger is so good you can even eat it on its own’. Conclusion Recent Singapore food publishing reflects this focus on taste. Tay’s publisher, Epigram, growing Singaporean food list includes the recently released Heritage Cookbooks Series. This highlights specialist Singaporean recipes and cookery techniques, with the stated aim of preserving tastes and foodways that continue to influence Singaporean food culture today. Volumes published to date on Peranakan, South Indian, Cantonese, Eurasian, and Teochew (from the Chaoshan region in the east of China’s Guangdong province) cuisines offer both cultural and practical guides to the quintessential dishes and flavours of each cuisine, featuring simple family dishes alongside more elaborate special occasion meals. In common with the food writing discussed above, the books in this series, although dealing with very different styles of cookery, contribute to an overall impression of the taste of Singapore food that is highly consistent and extremely persuasive. This food writing narrates that Singapore has a delicious as well as distinctive and interesting food culture that plays a significant role in Singaporean life both currently and historically. It also posits that this food culture is, at the same time, easily accessible and also worthy of detailed consideration and discussion. In this way, this food writing makes a contribution to both local and visitors’ appreciation of Singaporean food culture. Therefore, the problem of rational use of natural resources, in particular protection of early spring plant species is very important. However, literary sources analysis only reveals data on the biology of species of this genus. The present research,conducted in the spring of 2017-2019, focuses on anatomical and morphological features of two Altai species: Gagealutea and Gagea minima; these features were studied, clarified and confirmed by drawings and photographs. The anatomical structure of the stem and leaf blade was studied in detail. The obtained research results will prove useful for studies of medicinal raw materials and honey plants. Kolomytseva, DOI: https://doi.org/10.26782/jmcms.spl.10/2020.06.00042 Abstract: This study was aimed at examining the influence of succession cropping on the economic efficiency of no-till field crop rotations on the black earth in the zone of unstable moistening of the Stavropol krai. A long-term stationary experiment was conducted to examine for the purpose nine field crop rotation patterns different in the number of fields (four to six), set of crops, and their succession in crop rotation. The respective shares of legumes, oilseeds, and cereals in the cropping pattern were 17 to 33, 17 to 40, and 50 to 67 %. It has been established that in case of no-till field crop cultivation the economic efficiency of plant production depends on the set of crops and their succession in rotation. The most economically efficient type of crop rotation is the soya-winter wheat-peas-winter wheat-sunflower-corn six-field rotation with two fields of legumes: in this rotation 1 ha of crop rotation area yields 3 850 grain units per ha at a grain unit prime cost of 5.46 roubles; the plant production output return and profitability were 20,888 roubles per ha and 113 %, respectively. The high production profitabilities provided by the soya-winter wheat-sunflower four-field and the soya-winter-wheat-sunflower-corn-winter wheat five-field crop rotation are 108.7 and 106.2 %, respectively. The inclusion of winter wheat in crop rotation for two years in a row reduces the second winter wheat crop yield by 80 to 100 %, which means a certain reduction in the grain unit harvesting rate to 3.48-3.57 thousands per ha of rotation area and cuts the production profitability down to 84.4-92.3 %. Sirotinskiy, DOI: https://doi.org/10.26782/jmcms.spl.10/2020.06.00043 Abstract: This paper is concerned with solving one of the issues of the general problem of designing geophysical equipment for the natural climatic environment of the Arctic. The relevance of the topic has to do with an increased global interest in this region. The paper is aimed at considering the basic principles of developing and the procedure of testing seismic instruments for use at ultralow climatic temperatures. In this paper the indicated issue is considered through the example of a seismic module designed for petroleum and gas exploration by passive seismoacoustic methods. The seismic module is a direct-burial portable unit of around 5 kg in weight, designed to continuously measure and record microseismic triaxial orthogonal (ZNE) noise in a range from 0.1 to 45 Hz during several days in autonomous mode. The functional chart of designing the seismic module was considered, and concrete conclusions were made for choosing the necessary components to meet the ultralow-temperature operational requirements. The conclusions made served for developing appropriate seismic module. In this case, the components and tools used included a SAFT MP 176065 xc low-temperature lithium cell, industrial-spec electronic component parts, a Zhaofeng Geophysical ZF-4.5 Chinese primary electrodynamic seismic sensor, housing seal parts made of frost-resistant silicone materials, and finely dispersed silica gel used as water-retaining sorbent to avoid condensation in the housing. The paper also describes a procedure of low-temperature collation tests at the lab using a New Brunswick Scientific freezing plant. The test results proved the operability of the developed equipment at ultralow temperatures down to -55°C. In addition, tests were conducted at low microseismic noises in the actual Arctic environment. The possibility to detect signals in a range from 1 to 10 Hz at the level close to the NLNM limit (the Peterson model) has been confirmed, which allows monitoring and exploring petroleum and gas deposits by passive methods. As revealed by this study, the suggested approaches are efficient in developing high-precision mobile seismic instruments for use at ultralow climatic temperatures. The solution of the considered instrumentation and methodical issues is of great practical significance as a constituent of the generic problem of Arctic exploration. The article analyzes the results of treatment of patients with excess length of the second metatarsal bones that underwent osteotomy with and without osteosynthesis. The results of treatment of patients who underwent metatarsal shortening due to classical Weil-osteotomy with and without osteosynthesis were analyzed. The first group consisted of 34 patients. They underwent classical Weil osteotomy. The second group included 44 patients in whomosteotomy of the second metatarsal bone were not by the screw. When studying the results of the treatment in the immediate postoperative period, weeks 6, 12, slightly better results were observed in patients of the first group, while one year after surgical treatment the results in both groups were comparable. One year after surgical treatment, there were 2.9% (1 patient) of unsatisfactory results in the first group and 4.5% (2 patients) in the second group. Considering the comparability of the results of treatment in remote postoperative period, the choice of concrete method remains with the operating surgeon. Methods. A prospective 3-year study of 86 healthy dogs (aged 1-7 yrs) of different breeds and of both sexes. Echo homogeneity and echogenicity of the stomach and intestines wall were determined by the method of Silina, T.L., et al. (2010) in absolute values ​​of average brightness levels of ultrasound image pixels using the 8-bit scale with 256 shades of gray. Results. Quantitative echogenicity indicators of the stomach and the small intestine wall in dogs were determined. Based on the numerical values ​​characterizing echogenicity distribution in each layer of a separate structure of the digestive system, the coefficient of gastric echogenicity is determined as 1:2.4:1.1 (mucosa/submucosa/muscle layers, respectively), the coefficient of duodenum and jejunum echogenicity is determined as 1:3.5:2 and that of ileum is 1:1.8:1. Clinical significance. Datieva, DOI: https://doi.org/10.26782/jmcms.spl.10/2020.06.00046 Abstract: The aim of this work was to assess the functional reserves of the body to quantify individual health; adaptation, psychophysiological characteristics of the health quality of medical students in different seasons of the year. When studying the temporal organization of physiological functions, the rhythm parameters of physiological functions were determined, followed by processing the results using the Cosinor Analysis program, which reveals rhythms with an unknown period for unequal observations, evaluates 5 parameters of sinusoidal rhythms (mesor, amplitude, acrophase, period, reliability). The essence of desynchronization is the mismatch of circadian rhythms among themselves or destruction of the rhythms architectonics (instability of acrophases or their disappearance). Desynchronization with respect to the rhythmic structure of the body is of a disregulatory nature, most pronounced in pathological desynchronization. High neurotism, increased anxiety reinforces the tendency to internal desynchronization, which increases with stress. During examination stress, students experience a decrease in the stability of the temporary organization of the biosystem and the tension of adaptive mechanisms develops, which affects attention, mental performance and the quality of adaptation to the educational process. Time is shortened and the amplitude of the “initial minute” decreases, personal and situational anxiety develops, and the level of psychophysiological adaptation decreases. The results of the work are priority because they can be used in assessing quality and level of health. Tsvetkov, DOI: https://doi.org/10.26782/jmcms.spl.10/2020.06.00047 Abstract: The present study of comparison methods based on the triadic model introduces the following concepts: the relation of comparability and the relation of comparison, and object comparison and attributive comparison. The difference between active and passive qualitative comparison is shown, two triadic models of passive and active comparison and models for comparing two and three objects are described. Triadic comparison models are proposed as an alternative to dyadic comparison models. Comparison allows finding the common and the different; this approach is proposed for the analysis of the nomothetic and ideographic method of obtaining knowledge. The nomothetic method identifies and evaluates the general, while the ideographic method searches for unique in parameters and in combinations of parameters. Triadic comparison is used in systems and methods of argumentation, as well as in the analysis of consistency/inconsistency.
