Abstract:
Eutrophication is a major concern in the Baltic Sea and it is affecting macrophyte communities by promoting the growth of opportunistic algae and decreasing the cover of perennial macrophyte species via shading. It is however uncertain how common eutrophication and its symptoms are in the northern parts of the Baltic Sea, the Botnian Sea. The aim of this study was to evaluate if Sörleviken, a bay in the Bothnian Sea, show signs of increased eutrophication pressure in 2020 compared to 2007 based on changes in macrophyte cover and composition. The macrophyte community was inventoried with under-

Abstract:
The white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is in the top of the marine food chain and its existence in Sweden has been threatened several times. The species succeeded to recover from the deep decline in the 1970s when the exposure to persistent organic pollutants influenced the reproduction negatively. The species is today spread over the country but is still seen as a near threatened species. Even though a recovery has occurred there is still some reproduction problems seen in the region of the south Bothnian Sea. The work presented in this thesis has focused on expanding the knowledge

Through social landscape theory the aim of this thesis is to broaden the understanding of the bronze age monumental graves on the coast of Norrland. Questions about similarities between the stone ship settings and long cairns are analysed by looking at size and placement in the landscape. This shows the possible connections between the two construction types and were questioned throughout the process of writing. A reconstructed shoreline set to Late Nordic Bronze Age period IV, has been analysed by looking at the monuments placement to see possible connections through a maritory between Norrla

As part of the 1989 BABEL project, Durham University recorded large quantities of high resolution wide-angle data from six deep seismic lines shot in the Gulf of Bothnia. Fifteen analogue and three digital seismic recording stations were used, located in Sweden around the Sea of Bothnia. The wide-angle data is of very high quality due to the low noise and good transmission of seismic energy through the cratonic crust of the Baltic Shield. BABEL line 6 is a 240 km long, north-south profile in the western half of the Sea of Bothnia that runs almost parallel to several deep seismic refraction pro

As cyanobacteria can be found in a wide variety of environments and can cause great damage to ecosystems, human health, and economy, it is important to monitor and understand their behaviour. In this case, the study aims to understand the spatial variations of cyanobacteria communities in the Gulf of Bothnia, by analysing environmental factors that affect them. I hypothesize that the variations from north to south and coast to offshore of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen promote the occurrence of different cyanobacteria orders, i.e. Chroococcales, Oscillatoriales, and Nostocales. The influence of sea ice seeding on the northern Baltic Sea´s pelagic phytoplankton spring bloom was studied in a laboratory experiment in which microcosms mimicked sea conditions. On March 26th, 2018, samples (ice cores and seawater) were taken from land-fast ice at a coastal station in the Gulf of Bothnia. The seeding experiment lasted for 9 days, during which a 12:12 hours light:dark incubation took place. Four different treatments (two with ice and two without it) were set up in twelve incubated microcosms. Samples for analyses were taken on days 0, 3, 6 and 9. On day 0, measurements were

Abstract The aims of this thesis included identifying ways to mitigate the economic losses of the commercial fishery in the Gulf of Bothnia resulting from fishery regulation enforced to protect wild Atlantic salmon stocks, the recent decline in survival of hatchery-reared salmon, and the dramatically increased seal-induced catch and gear damage. In addition, these solutions should facilitate safeguarding the recently-recovered wild salmon stocks and seal populations. This study examines the costs in terms of lost revenues inflicted upon the vendace fishing industry by increased seal predation in the Bothnian Bay between the years of 2008 and 2017. A partial bioeconomic model is used to estimate the costs of predation, where a constant stock management type is assumed. The results show that the average predation cost is approximately 4500 SEK per ringed seal and 2300 SEK per grey seal. A 10 percent increase in the ringed seal population is estimated to result in 7,1 million SEK in lost revenues on average, which would constitute 15 percent of the total aver

<p>The brackish Baltic Sea is a marginal environment for both marine and freshwater species. The rate of ecological differentiation is presumably high due to strong selection pressure from a gradient of decreasing salinity that has been present in its current state for only about 3 000 years. Even more recently, increased nutrient loading due to human activities has affected the growth rate of species, with potential effects on their competitive interactions and responses to other regulating factors. I have investigated the potential effects of low salinity and nutrient enrichment on the distr
