Benhaddou, Kamel. "Dynamical mass generation : from elementary fields to bound states." Thesis, Durham University, 2003. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4015/.

Full text
Abstract:
We investigate the dynamical generation of fermion mass in Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This non-perturbative study is performed using a truncated set of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the fermion and photon propagator and the quark propagator. First, we study dynamical fermion mass generation in QED using a cancellation mechanism for the full photon-electron vertex that respects multiplicative renor- malisability and reproduces perturbation theory and determine the critical coupling in different approximations. We then study the quark equation using a mode

Tarrús, Castellà Jaume. "Explicit Bound states and Resonance fields in Effective Field Theories." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/82144.

Full text
Abstract:
The first three chapters of this thesis have been devoted to the theoretical background. We presented the novel work of this thesis in chapters 4 and 5. In chapter 4 we have constructed a Chiral effective field theory for the nucleon--nucleon system which contains dibaryon fields as fundamental degrees of freedom. The large scattering lengths in the 1S0 and the 3S1 channels force the dibaryon residual masses to be much smaller than the pion mass. Since no counterterm has to be enhanced like in the KSW approach, naïve dimensional analysis is sufficient to assess the size of the effective field

Abstract:
A star graph consists of an arbitrary number of segments that are joined at a point which is called the vertex. In this work it is investigated from a pure theoretical point of view, in the framework of quantum field theory. As a concrete physical application, the electric conductance tensor is obtained. In particular it is shown that this conductance behaves differently according to whether the scattering matrix associated with the vertex of the graph has bound-state poles or not.

Oberlander, Jon Reid. "The semantics of temporal indexicals." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6617.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates the formal semantics of temporal indexical expressions in English. Examples of such expressions include now, tomorrow and last year. In the past, research has concentrated on instances of such expressions which have two major properties. These indexicals are sensitive to extralinguistic context, and while they do possess descriptive meaning, that meaning does not appear within the propositions which correspond to utterances of the sentences which contain the indexicals. The thesis argues that this line of research has neglected a significant body of natural language evi

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2003<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A tower of global function fields :F = (FI, F2' ... ) is an infinite tower of separable extensions of algebraic function fields of one variable such that the constituent function fields have the same (finite) field of constants and the genus of these tend to infinity. A study can be made of the asymptotic behaviour of the ratio of the number of places of degree one over the genus of FJWq as i tends to infinity. A tower is called asymptotically good if this limit is a positive number. The well-known Drinfeld- Vladut bound pr

Abstract:
This thesis reports the application of static and ramped electric fields to the Rydberg states of NO. Chapter 1 introduces the history of Rydberg states, their exotic properties, decay mechanisms, and the effect of an applied electric field. Chapter 2 details the experimental set-up used for the experiments presented in this thesis. Chapter 3 describes the structure of NO and multiphoton excitation scheme utilised for the work presented in this thesis. Chapter 4 investigates the effect of applied DC electric fields in the range 0 – 150 V cm-1 on the predissociating Rydberg states of NO below t

Abstract:
<p>This thesis surveys the issue of finding rational points on algebraic curves over finite fields. Since Goppa's construction of algebraic geometric codes, there has been great interest in finding curves with many rational points. Here we explain the main tools for finding rational points on a curve over a nite eld and provide the necessary background on ring and field theory. Four different articles are analyzed, the first of these articles gives a complete set of table showing the numbers of rational points for curves with genus up to 50. The other articles provide interesting constructions

The work is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the description of unbound and bound base layers and their comparison. Furthermore is presented the description of the recycled concrete, its properties, production, improvement and issues. International experiences with recycled concrete technology are described as well. The practical part is focused on laboratory testing of concrete recycled material taken from the highway D1. The aim of this part is to determine whether the concrete can be recycled back into unbound or bound base layers and concrete casing.
