"The trips to Italy that Paul Bourget made throughout his life seem to have influenced his literary career and his intellectual, from the dilettante to the successful novelist and critic. How these Italian artistic sensations conditioned Bourget to establish psychological criticism that was increasingly systematic? How is this italianisation reflected in his novels and what are the artistic references that determined this inclination? Following the course of this pilgrimage and the development of his writings, Italy seems a point of inflection in the evolution of Paul Bourget’s psychological thought. The purpose of this article is precisely to shed light on this hypothesis and to contribute to a better understanding and reading of Bourget’s psychological criticism."

Abstract:

The article presents young Żeromski’s fascination with the writings of Paul Bourget. Basing on the Polish writer’s journal entries concerned with Une crime d’amour and Mensonges one can trace an ambivalent attitude towards those psychological novels developed in the late 1880s. By young Żeromski’s standards Bourget falls behind other masters of prose he admires at the time, namely Turgenev and Dostoyevsky. Still, despite Bourget’s didacticism, the aspiring youth cannot refrain from fascination for the descriptions of characters, whose emotions so often so clearly mirror his own. There are at least a few plots (an aspiring writer’s ambitions in the great world, the memory of a love lost etc.) which could have caught Żeromski’s attention as valid attempts to capture experiences known to him as well. It is therefore the identification process that stands in the way of condemning the moralistic ambitions of Bourget and allows the French writer’s works to remain an important point of reference for the Polish witer’s upcoming writing endeavors.

À partir de l’évolution littéraire de Paul Bourget, cet article cherche à explorer le pivotement qui s’opère entre sa critique psychologique marquée par une conscience de la décadence et ses romans psychologiques à visée sociale où l’auteur s’efforce de mettre en évidence des lois morales. Le concept même de révolution, que certaines critiques avaient utilisé pour qualifier les romans de Bourget, acquiert dans les discours du romancier psychologue une dimension sociale et moralisante qui constitue la force de ses romans dits « à idées ». Entre une volonté d’innovation et une réaction anti-révolutionnaire, voire antimoderne, les romans de Bourget pourraient se révéler comme une pensée en évolution qui cherche, tel que le précise l’auteur, à déconstruire la Révolution pour restaurer l’unité organique du corps social.

En 1848, du lointain Kamouraska arrive au tout neuf noviciat des Clercs de Saint-Viateur de L’Industrie (Joliette), un jeune homme de 26 ans : cours classique, expérience d’enseignement, profonde piété, talents pour les sciences et l’architecture. La communauté lui permet de développer ses dons. À L’Industrie, à Chambly, à Rigaud, à Victoria. 1868, Mgr Bourget l’envoie lever les plans de Saint-Pierre de Rome qu’il veut reproduire en petit à Montréal. C’est la maquette de Joseph Michaud qui fera décider la construction de la cathédrale de Montréal. Sa notoriété gagnera toute la province : églises, couvents, maisons privées, laboratoires, musée, collections, etc. Qui donc est ce clerc du bas-relief du monument de Mgr Bourget devant la cathédrale de Montréal, déployant des plans devant l’évêque en présence de quelques personnages dont l’un (Victor Bourgeau) a les bras croisés? Qui donc est ce jeune homme de 26 ans qui, en 1848, descend du « steamboat » de Lanoraie et arrive, peut-être à pied - car il en est capable - à L’Industrie (premier nom de Joliette), où le reçoit une communauté religieuse qui vient à peine de s’installer en terre canadienne? Qui donc est ce jeune homme « extrêmement timide » toute sa vie, qui nous arrive, mystérieusement dirait-on, de l’une des aînées de nos paroisses canadiennes-françaises, Kamouraska? C’est Joseph Michaud.

Abstract:

Le lac du Bourget, l'un des principaux lacs alpins situé en France, a fait l'objet en 1981 d'importants travaux d'aménagement en vue de ta restauration de la qualité de ses eaux. Une campagne de mesure portant sur les années 1988-89 a été mise en place afin de faire le point sur l'évolution du lac depuis la fin des travaux. Un modèle thermique et biogéochimique (phosphore, oxygène, azote) sera utilisé pour synthétiser les connaissances, prévoir l'évolution de la qualité des eaux du lac ainsi que l'influence d'éventuels aménagements complémentaires. Les résultats présentés ici concernent la première étape du projet d'études, la modélisation thermique du lac du Bourget. Le modèle utilisé est un modèle unidimensionnel, vertical, basé sur l'équation d'advection-diffusion. L'expression des coefficients de dispersion selon la profondeur reprend celle d'un modèle du lac Léman (Tassin, 1986). Les équations utilisées distinguent l'épilimnion, le métalimnion et l'hypolimnion. Les résultats présentés montrent que le modèle décrit de façon satisfaisante le cycle thermique annuel et l'évolution inter-annuelle des températures dans le lac du Bourget. Les profils et les valeurs des coefficients de dispersion calculés sur le lac du Bourget sont proches de ceux obtenus sur d'autres lacs à partir de mesures fines de température ou de concentrations d'isotopes naturels. Les coefficients de dispersion obtenus pourront donc être utilisés dans la modélisation des substances dissoutes dans le lac.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT The diversity of small eukaryotes (0.2 to 5 μm) in a mesotrophic lake (Lake Bourget) was investigated using 18S rRNA gene library construction and fluorescent in situ hybridization coupled with tyramide signal amplification (TSA-FISH). Samples collected from the epilimnion on two dates were used to extend a data set previously obtained using similar approaches for lakes with a range of trophic types. A high level of diversity was recorded for this system with intermediate trophic status, and the main sequences from Lake Bourget were affiliated with ciliates (maximum, 19% of the operational taxonomic units [OTUs]), cryptophytes (33%), stramenopiles (13.2%), and cercozoa (9%). Although the comparison of TSA-FISH results and clone libraries suggested that the level of Chlorophyceae may have been underestimated using PCR with 18S rRNA primers, heterotrophic organisms dominated the small-eukaryote assemblage. We found that a large fraction of the sequences belonged to potential parasites of freshwater phytoplankton, including sequences affiliated with fungi and Perkinsozoa. On average, these sequences represented 30% of the OTUs (40% of the clones) obtained for each of two dates for Lake Bourget. Our results provide information on lacustrine small-eukaryote diversity and structure, adding to the phylogenetic data available for lakes with various trophic types.

Très près de Mgr Bourget qui les avait fait venir à Montréal en 1842, les Jésuites appuyèrent constamment le second évêque de Montréal dans ses efforts pour instaurer dans son diocèse une société de chrétienté et faire de Montréal « une petite Rome ». Ce projet de société qui avait d’abord été conçu par son prédécesseur, Mgr Lartigue, se heurta très tôt à un autre projet de société, de nature laïque, défendu par les esprits avant-gardistes de l’Institut canadien de Montréal, héritiers de la pensée de Louis-Joseph Papineau. Au terme d’une lutte acharnée, le projet de société de Mgr Bourget triompha, grâce notamment au soutien inconditionnel des Jésuites, avant de s’étendre graduellement à l’ensemble de la province.

Au cours de son long épiscopat de 1840 à 1876, le second évêque de Montréal, Mgr Ignace Bourget, s’est illustré en particulier par son engagement social. Il s’intéressa à toutes les formes de misères physique et morale : les malades, les indigents, les orphelins, les délinquants, les prisonniers, les personnes âgées et infirmes. Il travailla, à cette fin, à la fondation de plusieurs associations de charité dont l’Association diocésaine de Charité, l’Association de Sainte-Blandine et la Société de Saint-Vincent de Paul. Il forma avec Mère Gamelin, sur le modèles des Filles de la Charité de Saint-Vincent de Paul, l’Institut des Soeurs de Charité-de-la-Providence. Il prit une part active à la fondation des Soeurs des Saints-Noms de Jésus et de Marie et de Sainte-Anne. Il encouragea la venue des Soeurs du Bon-Pasteur d’Angers pour s’occuper de la réhabilitation des femmes dépravées. Il combattit également l’ivrognerie, « le vice du siècle », en établissant la Société de Tempérance et de Charité et en prodiguant son encouragement aux campagnes de tempérance. Il véhicula enfin certaines idées reliées au Catholicisme social, s’intéressant notamment à l’épargne dans les masses ouvrières, à l’agriculture et à la colonisation. Mgr Bourget fut un grand évêque, fortement engagé au plan social.

Abstract:

En el marco de la nueva crítica literaria francesa, Paul Bourget publica los Essais de psychologie contemporaine (1883) y los Nouveaux essais de psychologie contemporaine (1885). La finalidad perseguida con estas obras es reconstruir el estado moral de la sociedad francesa de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. La investigación revela que las nuevas generaciones francesas se encuentran aquejadas del llamado mal de siglo: una fatiga mortal de vivir, una constatación de la ausencia de sentido. Entre las causas de ello, Bourget identifica la influencia pesimista que cada uno de los diez autores estudiados en los Essais y en los Nouveaux essais ejerce con su literatura sobre los jóvenes franceses. Al analizar cada uno de estos autores, el crítico literario advierte que todos ellos se encuentran inmersos en un mismo proceso que es fundamental en la constitución de sus sensibilidades: la décadence. Dentro de este contexto, el objetivo del presente trabajo es desarrollar la teoría de la decadencia formulada por Paul Bourget. Para ello, el estudio se dividirá en dos partes: en la primera de ellas, se expondrá la noción de la décadence y sus presupuestos conceptuales positivistas sobre lo normal y lo patológico. En la segunda parte, se realizará una descripción del personaje de Emma Bovary de Madame Bovary a fin de mostrar un caso de idealización romántica que constituye una manifestación concreta de la decadencia.

Peri-alpine lakes are vulnerable to climate warming. Water temperature in these lakes has increased and will likely continue in the coming decades, questioning the fate of inhabiting aquatic populations. Understanding how coregonine fishes respond to these changes is of great importance as these are economically and ecologically valuable populations. Considering the diversity of European whitefish from the Coregonus genus in peri-alpine lakes, we can assume that their response to rising temperatures could be diverse. We conducted an experiment to explore how embryos from four European whitefish populations from three lakes − Bourget, Geneva, and Constance − responded to contrasting incubation temperatures (7.0 °C vs. 9.0 °C) in terms of incubation duration and survival. In Constance, both pelagic and littoral populations were considered separately. Survival from the eyed-egg stage to hatching at 7.0 °C in all populations was high, ranging from 89% to 98%. At 9.0 °C, increased mortality−compared to the 7.0 °C treatment−was the lowest in Bourget (33%) and the highest in the Constance littoral (62%) population. Mortality was intermediate for the Constance pelagic (44%) and Geneva (45%) populations. The impact of warmer incubation temperature on hatching dynamics also contrasted among populations, as both Constance populations hatched more precociously in the warm treatment relative to the cold treatment (–4.6 and −2.7% Accumulated Degree Days for littoral and pelagic populations, respectively), suggesting they are more stressed than populations from Geneva and Bourget (–1.2 and +1.1%, respectively). These data indicate populations may possess the ability to respond differently to warming temperatures.

Abstract:

Investigaremos a relação entre a décadence e o niilismo nos escritos tardios de Nietzsche, destacando o impacto das análises de Paul Bourget sobre a décadence literária do século XIX. A partir dessas análises, Baudelaire se torna para Nietzsche um caso típico de décadence, que expressa o “apetite furioso do nada”, enquanto uma forma de desagregação da vontade e das forças. Nesse sentido, Baudelaire torna-se um caso decisivo para diagnosticar a doença da vontade no homem do século XIX. Enquanto que a décadence se manifestaria em todas as épocas da humanidade, o niilismo valeria para Nietzsche como a tentativa de Nietzsche de abarcar e interpretar os processos de desvalorização dos valores no mundo moderno. Num segundo momento, defendemos que Nietzsche vai além de Bourget, ao compreender o niilismo como um modo singular de desagregação de forças, que possui um transcurso histórico único. Investigaremos, enfim, o valor da arte, das ilusões e das formas de embriaguez artísticas, como um ensaio derradeiro de Nietzsche para superar o “irreparável” niilismo dos artistas modernos.

L’échec des soulèvements de 1837-38 signale le point extrême atteint par une crise multidimensionnelle affectant la société bas-canadienne depuis une vingtaine d’années et qui va de pair avec une tiédeur religieuse remarquable. Dès 1839, à l’instigation de Mgr Lartigue et de Mgr Bourget, une stratégie pastorale de conversion d’ensemble de la population des paroisses prend forme. Profitant de la présence nord-américaine de Mgr Forbin-Janson, co-fondateur des Missionnaires de France, une vaste campagne de Missions populaires s’engage dans la région montréalaise à partir de septembre 1840. Nous analysons ici le rôle des acteurs principaux de ce mouvement : l’initiateur et l’organisateur, Mgr Bourget; l’importateur de la formule et le prophète, Mgr Forbin-Janson; les collaborateurs cléricaux, les curés des paroisses touchées et leurs confrères; les sujets de la dramaturgie de conversion, le peuple des paroisses. Durant les deux premières années, près de la moitié du diocèse a été atteinte. La transformation des attitudes et des conduites n’a pas été subite. Mais le mouvement de réveil religieux enclenché, mesuré à la lumière des communions pascales, conduira à la quasi-unanimité à la fin des années 1860.

Le comique dans le théâtre des femmes au Québec a été très peu étudié jusqu’à maintenant. Mon étude vise à poser quelques points de repère historiques sur cette production entre 1975 et 1995, pour ensuite en cerner les caractéristiques saillantes, à la lumière de notions propres à une poétique de la comédie. Le répertoire comique au féminin de cette période a pour principales représentantes les dramaturges Louise Roy, Julie Vincent, Maryse Pelletier, Élizabeth Bourget, Louisette Dussault et Chantal Cadieux, à côté de collectifs nettement plus militants comme le Théâtre des Cuisines et Les Folles Alliées. Au-delà des thèmes liés aux luttes en synchronie que les femmes mènent pour leur égalité sociale, le comique dramaturgique et scénique au féminin fait clairement appel, d’une part, à une corporéité carnavalesque de l’être féminin en tant que gestus social et « genre » (au sens de gender) ; et, d’autre part, à une stratégie d’interpellation du public qui prend appui sur la provocation bouffonne et la satire des comportements masculins abusifs ou machistes. La prise en compte de trois productions – Bernadette et Juliette (1978) d’Élizabeth Bourget, Moman (1979) de Louisette Dussault et Mademoiselle Autobody (1985) des Folles Alliées – permet d’en confirmer la prévalence.

Abstract:

This paper presents a lake-level record established for the last millennium at Lake Saint-Point in the French Jura Mountains. A comparison of this lake-level record with a solar irradiance record supports the hypothesis of a solar forcing of variations in the hydrological cycle linked to climatic oscillations over the last millennium in west-central Europe, with higher lake levels during the solar minimums of Oort (around AD 1060), Wolf (around AD 1320), Spörer (around AD 1450), Maunder (around AD 1690), and Dalton (around AD 1820). Further comparisons of the Saint-Point record with the fluctuations of the Great Aletsch Glacier (Swiss Alps) and a record of Rhône River floods from Lake Bourget (French Alps) give evidence of possible imprints of proxy sensitivity on reconstructed paleohydrological records. In particular, the Great Aletsch record shows an increasing glacier mass from AD 1350 to 1850, suggesting a cumulative effect of the Little Ice Age cooling and/or a possible reflection of a millennial-scale general cooling until the mid-19th century in the Northern Hemisphere. In contrast, the Saint-Point and Bourget records show a general trend toward a decrease in lake levels and in flood magnitude anti-correlated with generally increasing solar irradiance.

Abstract:

In order to evaluate the historical impact of urban stormwater runoff on a lacustrine environment, eight sediment cores were collected in October 2006 in Lake Bourget (Savoie, France). Sediment samples were analysed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and polychlorobyphenyls (PCB) in order to correlate the vertical profiles of contamination and the evolution of the urbanisation on the watershed for the last 100 years. Overall, we observe that vertical profiles of PCB and PAH concentrations in Lake Bourget are showing a downward trend, probably resulting from the pollution control measures. Concentrations of PCB and PAH measured in surface sediments are approximately 5–10 fold less than maximal concentrations found in the cores. Maximal PAH concentrations were found at the bottom of the cores (∼40 cm) which approximately correspond to the beginning of the 20th century. Maximal PCB concentrations measured in cores L5 and L6 are respectively 850 and 790 μg/g dw (dryweight). The peak of PCB corresponds to the maximum of PCB production and consumption in the 1970s. In surface sediments total PCB concentrations range between 47 and 79 μg/kg dw. Those concentrations are particularly high compared to other values measured in lake sediments and highlight the problem of a local source of PCB contamination in the watershed. General trends were observed, yet the part of urban stormwater runoff in the total contamination could not be determined.

Previous work on barnacle biometry has mainly been concerned with the opercular valves, whose shape is often an important taxonomic character (Barnes & Healy, 1969; Henry & McLaughlin, 1975). The well-known change in shape whereby columnar individuals are produced as a result of crowding has also been described by many workers (e.g. Trusheim, 1932; Barnes & Powell, 1950; Subklew, 1969; Crisp & Bourget, 1985). The influence of environmental variables on the shape of the barnacle shell as a whole has been little studied.
