Abstract:
John Bowlby's model of grief is found inadequate to account for phenomena which are associated with most grief. Bowlby's ethological model deals only with grief as a disequilibrium in the social environment of the bereaved, but does not account for a disequilibrium in the relationship between the bereaved and the lost object. The basis of the inadequacy is found in Bowlby's rejection of Freud's concept of identification when Bowlby resumed the trauma theory which Freud had abandoned. The work of Freud and the Freudians, especially Volkan, is examined to understand what Bowlby was rejecting. Pr

Abstract:
This article argues that identifiable events in the life of John Bowlby contributed to his development of attachment theory. Bowlby's paternal grandfather died in the early English–Chinese trade wars, and his father became a physician who pioneered battlefield medical treatment. Bowlby's father later became personal physician to England's King Edward VII, socially elevating the family so that childcare was put almost entirely in the hands of nannies. Bowlby's own nanny left the household when he was approximately four years old, a loss he describes as almost equivalent to the loss of a mother.

Harry Harlow, famous for his experiments with rhesus monkeys and cloth and wire mothers, was visited by psychiatrist and psychoanalyst John Bowlby and by child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim in 1958. They made similar observations of Harlow’s monkeys, yet their interpretations were strikingly different. Bettelheim saw Harlow’s wire mother as a perfect example of the ‘refrigerator mother’, causing autism in her child, while Bowlby saw Harlow’s results as an explanation of how socio-emotional development was dependent on responsiveness of the mother to the child’s biological needs. Inspired by his experience as a teacher in a special school, John Bowlby became a doctor in order to give psychological treatment to children and their families. His debt to psychoanalysis is evident, while his determination to give external life events at least equal weight with mental states led him towards attachment theory. This pathway is well known, but Bowlby's parallel career as a child psychiatrist doggedly independent of psychoanalysis or medical practice, is not. His intelligent curiosity about human relationships took him beyond the prevailing scientific and clinical fixation with

The article presents a scholarly approach to understanding the mainstream contribution of the Bowlby–Ainsworth model of attachment as exemplified in the empirical literature (Ainsworth et al., 1978; Owen, 2017). The article starts with a brief conclusion on what John Bowlby argued should be the core aspects of therapy.
