Abstract:
Apart from squat jumps, countermovement jumps (CMJ), and drop jumps, differences among other jump variations are not as well researched, making data-driven exercise selection difficult. To address this gap, this study compared selected concentric and eccentric jump parameters of maximal effort CMJ, hurdle jumps over 50 cm hurdle (HJ), and box jumps onto a 50 cm box (BJ). Twenty recreationally trained men (25.2 ± 3.5 years) performed 3 repetitions of CMJs, HJs, and BJs, each on separate days. The data were collected using force platforms and a linear position transducer. The mean of 3 trials of each jump variation was analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Cohen’s d. Countermovement depth was significantly greater (p ≤ 0.05) and peak horizontal force significantly lower during CMJ compared to HJ and BJ. However, there were no differences in peak velocity, peak vertical and resultant force, and total impulsion time. Finally, BJ significantly decreased peak impact force by ~51% compared to CMJ and HJ. Therefore, the propulsive parameters of HJ and BJ seem to be similar to CMJ, despite CMJ having a greater countermovement depth. Furthermore, overall training load can be decreased dramatically by using BJ, which reduced peak impact force by approximately half.

Abstract:
The following is a qualitative portrait of a creative teacher and her teaching process. It has been written as chronological narrative using an evolving systems approach as a methodology for an instrumental case-study design. The creative teacher is a 47-year-old female with over 20 years experience with elementary, secondary, college, and university students. Five interviews were conducted with the teacher before, during, and following the course. Data sets include classroom observations revealed in field notes, documents such as course materials and audiotaped interviews. Two interviews were conducted with six students at the beginning and end of the course. One interview was conducted with the teacher's husband at the end of the course. The research context was an undergraduate university classroom of 146 preservice teachers studying how to plan curriculum and instruction for diverse learners. All interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. The overarching themes represented constructs involving intense and thorough course preparation, teacher-student connections, and reflective teaching. Overlapping subthemes guiding the process of creative teaching emerged including constraints placed on preparation and reflective teaching, an awareness of self and students within the process of preparation and connection, feedback from colleagues and students guiding the connection and reflective teaching, and the values and goals formed from personal history and philosophy of life shaping all three major themes. The teacher's personality acted as a conduit for expressing her creativity in the classroom. Her creative process was directed by her personality to choose the materials and methods of developing curriculum and instruction, and to guide her in her reflective teaching. This revelatory case example of creative teaching possesses characteristics resembling studies of creative giants, however presents a model of the process of creative teaching that can be ins

Abstract:
Integer least squares (ILS) problems arise from many applications, such as communications, lattice design, and global navigation satellite systems. However, an ILS problem is NP-hard. The objective of this thesis is to design efficient algorithms for solving box-constrained overdetermined integer least squares (BOILS) problems and box-constrained underdetermined integer least squares (BUILS) problems. A typical method to solve ILS problems consists of two stages: reduction and search. For solving the BOILS problems, we propose a new reduction algorithm and a modified search algorithm. Unlike the usual reduction algorithms which only reorder the columns of the lattice generator matrix, the new reduction algorithm also employs the integer Gauss transformations during the reordering process. Simulation results show that our new method makes the search process perform more efficiently than existing algorithms. For solving the BUILS problems, we present three algorithms: recursive generalized sphere decoding (GSD) algorithm, partial regularization algorithm, and tree search decoder. The main part of the recursive GSD algorithm recursively partitions the candidate set for the unknown integer vector into disjoint ordered subsets. The main idea of the partial regularization algorithm is to transform a BUILS problem to an equivalent BOILS problem by using part of the unknown integer vector to do the regularization. Some strategies are proposed to enhance the efficiency of this algorithm. The tree search decoder uses a depth-first tree search process to solve a BUILS problem. For each of these algorithms, various reduction strategies are proposed, which can significantly reduce the computational cost of the corresponding search process. Simulation results indicate that the recursive GSD algorithm is usually faster than other GSD algorithms in the literature, the partial regularization algorithm is the most efficient one among the existing algorithms for moderately underde

Abstract:
This thesis examines visual devices that distort, invert and toy with the conventions of linear perspective. The main object of analysis is Samuel Van Hoogstraten's Perspective Box with Views of a Dutch Interior (1655-1660), a work that is unique for its consummate application of three distinctive modes of visual representation: linear perspective, trompe l'oeil and anamorphosis. Drawing on recent literature with regard to renaissance and baroque perspectival theories and practices, this thesis argues that Van Hoogstraten's Perspective Box exposes the manner in which baroque forms of perspective, such as trompe l'oeil and anamorphosis, reveal the invisible mechanisms of renaissance linear perspective through the manipulation of its methods. In this way, Van Hoogstraten's perspective box interrogates, but does not invalidate, the inescapable structure of the perspectival system.

Abstract:
Approximately 55 million years ago, an unprecedented amount of light carbon was abruptly released into the ocean and atmosphere. This event, known as the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM), is documented by large negative carbon isotope excursions in marine and soil carbonates and by global environmental changes. Models have been applied to constrain the amount of carbon released during the PETM. In this study, the Walker-Kasting carbon cycle box model is revisited and, after correcting its carbon isotope equations, it is used to resolve a discrepancy in previous emission estimates. In addition, the atmospheric methane box model of Schmidt-Shindell is coupled to the Walker-Kasting model to explore the role of methane during the PETM. This coupled model is then combined with results from other modeling studies to demonstrate that the PETM may have been caused by the rel ease of approximately 3500 Pg C of thermogenic methane into the Atlantic Ocean.

Abstract:
Over the last decade, much research has been conducted in the field of HRM and its association with organisational performance. Encouraged by substantial positive evidence for statistical associations between sophisticated HRM practices and enhanced organisational performance, HRM researchers have become more assertive in their claims that HRM contributes to performance. However, most of the research is based on questionnaire surveys and still leaves key questions unanswered, in particular by which processes HRM contributes to performance. This lack of knowledge about the processes involved in the HRM-performance relationship is referred to as 'black box'. It is the focus of this thesis to attempt to open this 'black box'. A qualitative case study methodology was adopted and the Glasgow four-star hotel sector chosen as a field of enquiry. This choice allowed for a standardisation of factors that might influence the degree of sophistication of HRM and its impact on performance, i.e. regional differences in terms of product and labour markets, capital intensity and unionisation. Four out of seven eligible hotels participated in the research. The cognitions of managerial respondents from different levels (i.e. general managers, HR managers and line managers) formed the basis of the research. Interviews with these respondents were analysed using a causal mapping method. Detailed quantitative secondary data enabled an investigation of the economic context and demonstrated that organisational performance is influenced by the economic context. It is argued that the appropriate level of analysis is the operational departments where HRM is applied by line managers in a way not necessarily in accordance with formal policy. On this level, HRM has demonstrated both direct effects on the achievement of departmental performance indicators and indirect effects through employee outcomes.

Abstract:
The thesis addresses the diversity of concerns to be represented in the calculative practices of clinical efficiency decisions. The empirical site taken is the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and its Health Technology Assessment (HTA) process. The HTA process represents many diagnostic areas within one centralised, calculable process. The qualities of calculative practice, which mediate such complexity within one central framework, are explored. The theoretical lens used to examine the perceptions of calculative practices, from diverse human contributors in HTA, is Actor Network Theory (ANT). In particular, Callon's (1986b) Sociology of Translation is used along with key insights from Latour (1987, 2005). This is underpinned with an interpretative approach to defining calculative practices. The empirical examination involved observations of HTA meetings and interviews with key actors who were involved in contributing to HTA decision making. The degree of enrolment which human actors had with the NICE HTA black box, was shown to vary with several networking elements. These included diagnostic area, tenure of HTA experience, repertoire of health economics, personality/motivation and inter-contributor dynamics. Findings are presented within these particular issues and are analysed through the four stages of Callon’s (1986b) model: problematisation, interessement, enrolment and mobilisation. Theoretical and empirical contributions are centred on the examination of NICE, using ANT. Accounting's use of ANT is advanced. The thesis contributes to accounting's work within a healthcare context and advances the need to examine calculative practice with a broad and reflexive interpretation as to what constitutes form.

Abstract:
A coordinated response to DNA damage is vital to maintain cellular viability and prevent the onset of disease. In mammalian cells, the intra-S phase checkpoint regulator, ATR (Ataxia-telangiectasia mutated and RAD3-related) kinase coordinates the response to DNA damage to ensure the genome is accurately and completely replicated before the cell enters mitosis. Y box Binding Protein 1 (YB-1), a transcription and translation factor, has previously been implicated in cell proliferation and the development of chemotherapeutic resistance. YB-1 has been linked to a wide variety of cellular stresses, but has not been studied in the context of DNA replication. In this study, we determined that YB-1 associates to both the β-globin replication origin (origin-containing) and the control (origin-lacking) DNA regions. This observation suggested that YB-1 may be involved in DNA replication elongation instead of initiation. By immunoprecipiating YB-1, we identified that PCNA and MCM7 preferentially interact with YB-1 during S phase. The examination of the spatial and temporal dynamics of these interactions by immunofluorescence microscopy, however, did not reveal nuclear colocalization of these proteins. By treating cells with hydroxyurea to stall the replication fork, we re-examined the protein-protein interaction between YB-1 and MCM7 and found that following 8 hours of hydroxyurea treatment, YB-1 and MCM7 exhibited diffuse colocalization in the cell nucleus. This finding may implicate YB-1 in exerting a late-onset response to prolonged replication fork arrest either directly at stalled replication forks or at "dormant" origins bound by MCM complexes. A number of roles for YB-1 can be postulated, such as the requirement of YB-1 in facilitating the resumption of DNA replication, or the activation of additional origins to duplicate the genome in the presence of a replication stress. This finding may in turn account fo

Abstract:
In some applied areas such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and communications, etc., there is a linear model y = Ax + v, where the unknown parameter vector x is an integer vector and the noise vector v follows a normal distribution N(0, sigma^2 I). The typical methods for estimating x are the integer rounding (IR), the Babai nearest plane (BNP), and the integer least squares (ILS) methods. While IR and BNP are polynomial-time methods, the ILS method solves an NP-hard problem. The most effective approach to validating an integer estimator is to find its success rate, which is the probability of correct integer estimation. It has been found in the literature that the ILS estimator is optimal among all admissible integer estimators, including the IR and BNP estimators, as it maximizes the success rate. In communications applications, the integer parameter vector x is often constrained to a box. In this thesis, we first extend the concept of success rates to box-constrained versions of IR (BIR), BNP (BBNP), and ILS (BILS). We then extend some results for the success rates of the corresponding unconstrained estimators to these box-constrained estimators. In addition, we apply the success rate results to improve the efficiency of the BILS estimation process. If some entries of the integer estimator obtained by BBNP have high success rates, then we can fix these entries and solve a smaller BILS problem. This may reduce the overall computational time. Numerical simulations results are presented to support our findings.

Abstract:
Identifiers (or names) are created by a declaration. They are referenced by various statements. EXPRESS does not require declaration before reference, therefore the reference can come after or before the place where the declaration is given. The usual way of referring to a thing is to simply write its name. However, there are situations where a more elaborate reference — called a qualified reference — is needed. Some qualified names can be quite long. The Alias statement (13.2) can be used to simplify matters when the qualified name gets too clumsy to work with conveniently. A scope is a region of the source within which a name is visible. References to a name are legal in its scope but are illegal outside it. Scopes can be thought of as boxes nested within other boxes as illustrated by Figure 12.1. EXPRESS assumes that there is a giant box called the ‘universe’ which surrounds every other scope. All of the standard identifiers (Integer, Real... Abs, Usedln...) and all schemas are in the scope of the universe. As an example Figure 12.2 gives an inventory of the full names of the things shown in Figure 12.1 (but note that ‘universe’ is never specifically written). Although it may seem that some of the ‘given’ names are duplicates (AnAttribute for instance), when the full name is written out every name is unique. Name uniqueness is a requirement of EXPRESS. Peer names are visible to one another. The picture shows peer names as the ones inside the same box. The same effect is shown in the inventory by tracing common name elements from left to right until a name difference is found. Peer names are the ones at the level where the difference occurs. Visibility to other names starts at some point in the name chain. Every name along the path (reading from right to left) and their peers are visible. In the picture, start inside some box and jump outside. The names in that outer box are visible. Then jump to the next outer box, etc., until there are no more outer boxes. As an example, ASchema. AnotherEntity. AnotherAttribute (‘Universe’ will no longer be used) can ‘see’ the things shown in Figure 12.3. In fact, references can to their simple names can be used.

Abstract The best known of the culturally labeled and elaborated versions of the startle-matching syndrome is the one found in Malaysia and Indonesia, where it is called latah.1 The origin of this term is not known; although a number of etymologies have been suggested, none are convincing. Latah is often said to be the Malay word for “nervous” or “ticklish” (e.g., Adams, 1951; Gimlette, 1939), but “jumpy” would be closer, though still not exactly equivalent.

Abstract People often become hyperstartlers as a result of being startled repetitively and frequently. The fact that this is so is an interactional resource, a bit of neurophysiology that can be exploited socially and culturally in a great number of ways. This chapter analyzes one use of this resource: the story of how and why Aunt Sally Phelps, a character in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was turned into a hyperstartler. Being fictional, the account is a cultural artifact-both in the usual sense of the word “cultural” (it is part of a work of literature), and also in the anthropological sense (shared symbolic, meaning-laden material).

Abstract This chapter is a collection of jazz musicians’ pithy remarks, bon mots, etc., that have been remembered and repeated. Many musicians have a way with words. One of the best was Eddie Condon. He once inquired of a lady at a theater party, “Is that a hat or a threat you’re wearing?” On arriving at another party at an East Side town house that was decorated in an overwhelmingly modern style, Condon said to the host, “Quite a place, isn’t it? Do you suppose anyone lives here?” His most famous line was tossed off in reference to some criticism, which was actually rather complimentary of his work, written by French jazz critic Hugues Panassié. Eddie said, “I don’t see why we need a Frenchman to come over here and tell us how to play American music. I wouldn’t think of going to France and telling him how to jump on a grape.” (For more Condon stories, see Chapter 29.)

Abstract Five-year-old Javier has always been challenging, but recently he’s become frighteningly explosive. This intense boy with the big smile is doing so poorly that his childcare program’s director has urgently assembled a meeting of all staff who work with him. Teachers jump in quickly with a range of concerns, reporting that they’ve had to evacuate Javier’s classroom twice in the last week when he started knocking over chairs and tables, that he has to be shadowed constantly for safety reasons, and that in recent days they’ve been kicked and spat at in the midst of his angry episodes. Everyone involved cares a lot about Javier, whose life at home has never been easy. But they fear having to ask him to leave the program. Abstract:
This work discusses from a system theoretic point of view the low order modeling and identification of the acoustic scattering behavior of a ducted flame. In this context, one distinguishes between black-box and grey-box models. The former rely on time series data only and do not require any physical modeling of the system that is to be identified. The latter exploit prior knowledge of the system physics to some extent and in this sense are physically motivated. For the case of a flame stabilized in a duct, a grey-box model is formulated that comprises an acoustic part as well as sub-models for the flame dynamics and the jump conditions for acoustic variables across the region of heat release. Each of the subsystems can be modeled with or without physical a priori knowledge, in combination they yield a model for the scattering behavior of the flame. We demonstrate these concepts by analyzing a CFD model of a laminar conical premixed flame. The grey-box approach allows to optimize directly the scattering behavior of the identified model. Furthermore, we show that the method allows to estimate heat release rate fluctuations as well as the flame transfer function from acoustic measurements only.

Abstract:
The main motivation for the research is a verification of applicability of the fitness test as a predictor for specific alpine skiing performance of the Czech national team of U14 and U16 categories. We want to verify if the results from the fitness test correspond with points for the performance in alpine skiing disciplines (slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom). In total, 42 men and women (U14 and U16 categories), members of the Czech national team, participated in the research. Participants were grouped by gender (women n=21, age 14.23 (± 1.04), men n = 21, age 14.19 (± 1.07)). Fitness test consisted of six individual tests and was used as a tool to examine the level of motor abilities (jumping over the Swedish bench, shuttle run 4 × 10m, standing long jump, hurdles agility run - boomerang test, twist test, 20m shuttle run - beep test). Points for the performance in alpine skiing show the best result from a single competition transferred to the points. In our research we were looking for relationship between the points from three different disciplines (slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom) and the results from the fitness test. In the men category we found high correlation (at the significance level of p ˂ 0.05) between super giant slalom and standing long jump (r = -0.73; r² = 0.53), between super giant slalom and boomerang test (r = 0.62, r² = 0.38) and between super giant slalom and shuttle run 4 × 10m (r = 0.61, r² = 0.37). Small correlation was found between slalom and box jump test (r = -0.31, r² = 0.1), between slalom and twist test (r = -0.33, r² = 0.11) and between super giant slalom and twist test (r = -0.34, r² = 0.12). In women category we did not found high correlation (at the sig-nificance level of p ˂ 0.05). Small correlation was found between slalom and box jump (r = -0.31, r² = 0.1), between giant slalom and twist test (r = 0.01, r² = 0.0001), between super giant slalom and standing long jump (r = -0.03, r² = 0.0009) and between slalom and shuttle run 4 × 10m (r = -0.05, r² = 0.0025). Twist test had very small correlation in both men and women categories. We can say that it is not relevant for prediction of alpine skiing per-formance. Based on different significance of correlations between men and women (super giant slalom and standing long jump; slalom/super giant slalom and shuttle run 4 × 10m) it might be necessary to adjust fitness testing as a predictor of alpine skiing performance according to a gender.

With the availability of big maritime data and advancements of the computational techniques, such as machine learning and AI, automation of navigational decision-making in ships is on the rise. For low risk and more frequently observed cases, such as local vessels operating in calm sea, abundant data facilitates straightforward automation. The traditional data driven modeling (including black-box models) and associated validation techniques suffice the automation process of these cases as human intervention is rarely needed. However, for high-risk and infrequent scenarios, like winter navigation, data may be scarce, sparse, or imbalanced. Black-box data-driven models and associated validation techniques prove insufficient in these cases, as the expectation is for human to jump in and take control over when needed. This paper explores the role of the human element in various stages of data driven decision-making for winter navigation, encompassing the establishment of a multipurpose winter navigation database, model development, and validation. To illustrate, a case study on ice-breaker assistance operations will be presented.

Abstract:
We believe the climate crisis will be resolved in cities. Today, while cities occupy only 2% of the Earth's surface, 57% of the world's population lives in cities, and by 2050, it will jump to 68% (UN, 2018). Currently, cities consume over 75% of natural resources, accumulate 50% of the global waste and emit up to 80% of greenhouse gases (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). Cities generate 70% of the global gross domestic product and are significant drivers of economic growth (UN-Habitat III, 2016). At the same time, cities sit on the frontline of natural disasters such as floods, storms and droughts (De Sherbinin et al., 2007; Major et al., 2011; Rockström et al., 2021). One of the sustainability pathways to reduce the environmental consequences of the current extract-make-dispose model (or the "linear economy") is a circular economy (CE) model. A CE is defined as "an economic system that is based on business models which replace the 'end-of-life' concept with reducing, alternatively reusing, recycling and recovering materials in production/distribution and consumption processes" (Kirchherr et al., 2017, p. 224). By redesigning production processes and thereby extending the lifespan of goods and materials, researchers suggest that CE approaches reduce waste and increase employment and resource security while sustaining business competitiveness (Korhonen et al., 2018; Niskanen et al., 2020; Stahel, 2012; Winans et al., 2017). Organizations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Circle Economy help steer businesses toward CE strategies. The CE is also a political priority in countries and municipalities globally. For instance, the CE Action Plan, launched by the European Commission in 2015 and reconfirmed in 2020, is a central pillar of the European Green Deal (European Commission, 2015, 2020). Additionally, more governments are implementing national CE strategies in China (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2018), Colombia (Government of the Republic of Colombia, 2019), Finland (Sitra, 2016), Sweden (Government Offices of Sweden, 2020) and the US (Metabolic, 2018, 2019), to name a few. Meanwhile, more cities worldwide are adopting CE models to achieve more resource-efficient urban management systems, thereby advancing their environmental ambitions (Petit-Boix & Leipold, 2018; Turcu & Gillie, 2020; Vanhuyse, Haddaway, et al., 2021). Cities with CE ambitions include, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, Toronto, Peterborough (England) and Umeå (Sweden) (OECD, 2020a). In Europe, over 60 cities signed the European Circular Cities Declaration (2020) to harmonize the transition towards a CE in the region. In this policy brief, we provide insights into common challenges local governments face in implementing their CE plans and suggest recommendations for overcoming these. It aims to answer the question: How can the CE agenda be governed in cities? It is based on the results of the Urban Circularity Assessment Framework (UCAF) project, building on findings from 25 interviews, focus group discussions and workshops held with different stakeholder groups in Umeå, as well as research on Stockholm's urban circularity potential, including findings from 11 expert interviews (Rezaie, 2021). Our findings were complemented by the Circular Economy Lab project (Rezaie et al., 2022) and experiences from working with municipal governments in Sweden, Belgium, France and the UK, on CE and environmental and social sustainability.
