Integer least squares (ILS) problems arise from many applications, such as communications, lattice design, and global navigation satellite systems. However, an ILS problem is NP-hard. The objective of this thesis is to design efficient algorithms for solving box-constrained overdetermined integer least squares (BOILS) problems and box-constrained underdetermined integer least squares (BUILS) problems. A typical method to solve ILS problems consists of two stages: reduction and search. For solving the BOILS problems, we propose a new reduction algorithm and a modified search algorithm. Unlike

Shifts in vegetation from a moss-shrub peatland to one more dominated by shrubs will influence the microclimate. I analyzed the seasonal effect of increasing shrub cover in response to two NPK treatments (5NPK and 20NPK, with addition rates of 3.2 g N m-2 y-1 and 6.4 g N m-2 y-1, respectively) compared to the control (0NPK) in triplicate 3 x 3 m plots in an ombrotrophic bog located in Ottawa, Ontario. Half-hour measurements of light, soil temperature and moisture were measured in each plot. During the growing season, increases in LAI resulted in a decrease in soil temperature by 0.3 to 1.5

The exchange of carbon and water between a temperate peatland and the atmosphere was studied directly for the vascular plants; Chamaedaphne calyculata, Kalmia angustifolia, Vaccinium myrtilloides, and Maianthemum trifolium and indirectly for the bryophytes; Sphagnum rubellum and S. magellanicum. In vascular plants, carbon and water fluxes were well coupled (∼2.27 mumol CO 2 mmol-1 H2O) except in the post-deciduous period where temperature constrained water flux more than carbon flux. The seasonal cycle of Sphagnum water content was driven by water table depth; rain depth, rain frequency an

Numerical simulation of forming processes has been an important means for material selection, tool design, and process optimization. A critical component of simulation, however, is an accurate material constitutive model, describing the response of the material under possible modes of deformation. The accuracy, in turn, is linked to the tests and techniques applied for identification of constitutive models: the more elaborate the identification, the more reliable the material parameters. For textile composites, uncontrollable factors such as contact friction, misalignment, slip, variations in

In the first section of this Master's thesis, we study the concept of sacred, more precisely the phenomenon of "re-enchantment" at work in Bob (2008), a theatre play by René-Daniel Dubois. Through an analysis of religious patterns, discourse segments related to the sacred, and of the mise en abyme of Lorenzaccio (1834), a romantic drama written by Alfred de Musset, we demonstrate that the romantic discourse of characters Madame Fryers and Lorenzo (played by Bob) exerts a salutary influence on both the discourse and the life of the two male protagonists, and thus creates a form of "re-enchantme

This thesis is a literary analysis of two novels, Comme le bon pain (2001) by Mariama Ndoye and Cendres et braises (1994) by Ken Bugul. It examines the representation of Islam in relation to African women's identity, with particular emphasis on its relationship with the postcolonial context of francophone West Africa. Chapter I reviews the emergence of African francophone literature by women authors and the trends of criticism that developed as a result of it. It also presents the theoretical framework of this research, namely feminist and postcolonial theories inspired by Frantz Fanon and Afr

Although there have been certain advances with respect to equality rights, which are protected in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Quebec Charter of the Human Rights and Freedoms, judicial decisions often ignore race as a social construct. To give full effect to the principles of equality and to advance justice, courts need to take race into account, recognize it as a social construction, and make visible what is often invisible. The technique of deconstruction, by bringing to light history and relations of power, allows us to understand social context in all of its complexi

An ultrasonic velocity profiler (UVP) is used to measure the downward/upward flow right in front of the pier, and the downward flow and the stagnation point along the profile are also measured. The magnitudes and the frequencies of bow waves are analyzed by image analysis. The vortex sizes are mainly determined by pier diameter alone. The dimensionless amplitude of bo
