Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Many researchers have recently focused on the functional properties of muscles, and on the mechanics and kinematics of flight, without being able to consult an anatomical database since such a database was either non-existent or incomplete. In particular, this study examined the anatomy of the wing muscles of three Accipitridae, such as the European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus Linnaeus, 1758), the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis Linnaeus, 1758) and the eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus Linnaeus, 1758). These birds of prey were selected due to their different flight style in order to understand if such different flight performance could induce muscles differentiation. The comparison of the results of this study with other researches shows that some muscles exhibit a lesser degree of differentiation as compared to other previously examined birds of prey. However, in other muscles, many peculiarities were found. Based on the common characteristics of these muscles have been grouped into three sets with possible common function: a) muscles stabilizing the wing to the trunk and damping the forces generated during the flight; b) muscles that could control the rotation of the humerus; c) muscles maybe involved in proprioception. During this research, some similarities with other species but also many anatomical features not previously reported have been found. This study of gross anatomy could be an interesting starting point for future researches, such as microscopic or electrophysiological analysis, demonstrating the importance of gross anatomy as a means of preliminary examination.

Abstract:

The thesis is divided into three parts and one appendix. The first part is focussed on musical iconography in Giovanni da Verona’s inlays and carvings, masterpieces of the Renaissance monastic woodwork realised all over Italy between the XVth and the XVIth century. The second one analyses the apocryphal lira da braccio of the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum, wrongly assigned to fra’ Giovanni by Emanuel Winternitz in 1967. The third part illustrates the changements in style and meanings brought to the master’s art by his pupil fra’ Vincenzo Dalle Vacche. The appendix complete the work collecting texts and glossaries which can be useful to the comprehension of its three parts

Abstract:

Abstract:

An experimental study was conducted to observe the effects on the size and strength of the biceps brachii muscle of an exercise routine that trained the biceps to failure during each workout. The workout routine used ten exercises that specifically isolated the biceps brachii. A series of experiments measuring the size, maximum force, and relationship between force and electromyographic signal of the biceps muscles was used to test the effectiveness of the failure routine. The month long training program was found to produce significant size and strength gains in the biceps muscle, with an increase in maximum force greater than 30% after four weeks. It was also found that the slow oxidative twitch motor units became able to provide higher forces as indicated by the increase in the force at which fast oxidative twitch motor units were recruited.

The aim of this study was to analyze the behaviour of electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and frequency of the biceps brachii (BB), brachioradialis (BR), triceps brachii (TB) and multifidus (MT) in different isotonic resistance elbow flexion exercises, and to evaluate the 8 weeks training effect based in the EMG fatigue threshold (EMGFT) in the EMG variables, heart rate (HR), and perceived exertion (PE). 20 healthy males subjects was divided in a control group (CG, n=10) and a training group (TG, n=10). Initially, the one repetition maximum (1RM) isotonic force for biceps curl (BC) and Scott preacher curl (SC), was obtained. On the next week, in three different days, they was perform the BC, adapted biceps curl (ABC) and SC, with 25%, 30%, 35% e 40% of 1RM for one minute, one exercise per day. With the slope values of each load level, the EMGFT was calculated. Before and after the isotonic exercises, was performed isometric maximum voluntary contractions (IMVC) and submaximal (50% of IMVC). During the isotonic exercises, HR and PE was record. Once the BB EMGFT values were obtained, the TG performs training in the ABC exercise (8 weeks, 2 sessions, 3 exhaustive sets with 2 minutes rest). The HR, PE, isometric and isotonic force, as well as the EMG amplitude and frequency in maxima and submaximal isometric and isotonic contractions. Isotonic 166 contractions were analysed by slope and intercept values so linear regressions pre and post training. The results showed after 1 minute rest, there was recovery for BB muscle in EMG amplitude and frequency during the BC (except for total power). There was load level effect for all exercises, mainly for EMG amplitude (root mean square RMS) for BB and BR, with fatigue-induced immediately after the protocol.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Elbow flexor force steadiness (FS), measured as coefficient of variation (CV) of force, depends on forearm position and strength. Achilles tendon mechanical properties are associated with standing balance and plantar flexion FS; however, little is known about how tendon mechanics contribute to FS of an upper limb muscle such as the elbow flexors. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of distal biceps brachii tendon mechanics on elbow flexor FS across supinated, neutral and pronated forearm positions. It was hypothesized that maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), stiffness, tendon force and stress would be higher in supinated and neutral, while strain would be higher in pronated, contributing to enhanced FS, as previously observed for supinated and neutral compared with the pronated position. Eleven males performed isometric elbow flexion tasks at low (5, 10% MVC) and high (25, 50, 75%) forces. Tendon elongation and cross-sectional area were recorded with ultrasound during contraction to quantify tendon mechanics among positions. MVC, FS, tendon force and stress were less in pronated (p<0.01). Tendon strain was greater in neutral compared to pronated at 25, 50 and 75% MVC, and compared to supinated at 75% MVC (p≤0.05). Tendon stiffness did not differ among positions (p>0.05). The associations and influence of MVC and tendon mechanics on CV of force were analyzed using Pearson’s correlations and forward multiple regressions, respectively, for low and high force levels. Stewart, Kelly Louise. "Conventional and novel treatments for control of clubroot disease of brassicas." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4354.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this project was to develop treatments that would be able to reduce the survival of clubroot spores in field soil and protect the roots of young transplants against infection. The project focused on using combinations of treatments which integrate novel and existing controls with emphasis placed on the sustainable use of waste materials, plant materials and bioactives. A wide range of treatments were screened individually and in combination under glasshouse and field conditions, e.g. fungicides, nutritional amendments, companion planting, plant saponins and biocontrol agents. Many of these treatments were able to reduce clubroot severity to varying degrees. Glasshouse treatments were more successful at controlling disease than those applied in the field. The most effective treatments - when applied correctly - contained calcium, e.g. lime as calcium oxide or LimeX (a by-product of the sugarbeet processing industry), and crushed scallop and whelk shells (a by-product of the fishing industry). Whilst the effects of calcium and pH on clubroot are not new, growers need to think more in terms of dose of calcium applied in the field rather than just pH, and also, the time of addition of lime to soil before planting needs serious consideration as it may be optimal to apply lime less than two weeks before transplanting. Experimental results have shown that soil microflora plays a major role in the development of clubroot disease and that the membrane potential of growing roots may be one of the most important factors in preventing P. brassicae from entering plant roots and causing disease due to the effect that calcium and pH have on clubroot control. The experiments have also shown that there are interactions between treatments such as fungicides, limes, soil nutritional level and soil microflora at controlling disease and some treatments may reduce the effectiveness of other treatments at controlling disease. Another factor that is known to affect the effectiveness of treatments at controlling clubroot is the initial spore load in the soil. Therefore, an additional aim of the project was to develop a rapid, quantitative PCR based diagnostic test that could measure the level of clubroot spores directly from soil. Plasmodiophora brassicae DNA was successfully extracted and amplified from artificially inoculated soils and from naturally infested field soils using real-time PCR with selected sets of primers and probes. Many different types of soil DNA extraction methods were tested and standard curves relating to different levels of spore inoculum were created. This project has generated useful information as to why there are contradictory results in clubroot research about the effect of various treatments at controlling clubroot. This information may also be the basis of practical advice to brassica growers on best practices to use to achieve optimal clubroot control in the field. Options in relation to new sustainable control treatments are discussed in the light of the results from both glasshouse and field experiments. These involve planting brassicas on raised beds and applying treatments strategically around the root zone. LimeX 70 or powdered calcium oxide were demonstrated to be the most optimal lime treatments for control, and a split application of Perlka (granular calcium cyanamide) may prove to be a consistently effective method for controlling clubroot.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the behaviour of electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and frequency of the biceps brachii (BB), brachioradialis (BR), triceps brachii (TB) and multifidus (MT) in different isotonic resistance elbow flexion exercises, and to evaluate the 8 weeks training effect based in the EMG fatigue threshold (EMGFT) in the EMG variables, heart rate (HR), and perceived exertion (PE).

The sheep bracciola is a meat product made with the meat of the sheep neck, marinated and wrapped, popularly known as the steak turtleneck, which is presented as a choice of meat products derived from ovine. Considered a low commercial value meat, the use of marination and cooking method are alternatives to adding value and offering a differentiated product to the consumer market. This research aimed to develop and evaluate the microbiological quality, physico-chemical and sensory of sheep bracciola subjected to different types of cooking: sous vide, combined oven and autoclave. The microbiological evaluation were assessed total coliforms and thermotolerant, Staphylococcus aureus, sulphite-reducing Clostridium and presence / absence of Salmonella spp. The physicochemical evaluation, the following parameters were analyzed: yield, water holding capacity, cooking loss of weight, color, pH, Aa, texture and chemical composition. Sensory analysis was conducted by 12 panelists trained through a methodology based on the Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (QDA) in which the color attributes, presence of nerves, degree of hydration, sheep aroma, flavor sheep, salty, tenderness, juiciness and fibrousness were studied . The results of the microbiological analyzes revealed the absence of Salmonella spp. and low total coliform counts and thermotolerant, Staphylococcus aureus and sulphite-reducing Clostridium in the samples evaluated. The physical and chemical quality of sheep bracciola showed an excellent nutritional value, for each 100g of sheep bracciola presented an average of 73g of moisture, 1.6 g ash, 16.0 g of protein and 2.6 g of lipid. In the instrumental texture analysis, samples were highlighted subjected to cooking sous vide (70 ° C for 6h, 12h and 24h) and autoclave, the combined oven under the conditions used in this study, were not enough to make it soft , serving as an indicator for the selection of these samples in the sensory evaluation. The sample baked in an autoclave recorded the highest scores on the attributes studied in sensory analysis, highlighting the softness attribute. Thus, it is concluded that the samples ovine bracciola coupled with the use of cooking methods sous vide and the autoclave showed detachable nutritional value, high protein, low fat and high quality for their sensory softness. Also, because it is inexpensive raw material, the use of this by-product of slaughter can generate income for producers, leveraging the goat and sheep farming sector.

Six human subjects performed a modified Fitts' test by moving an electromyographic signal between two targets on a computer screen. For five out of six subjects, the results were consistent with Fitts' Law with correlation coefficients ranging between 29% and 72%. The low correlation of the sixth subject (0.6%) may have been due to electrode misplacement and the adoption of a "strategy" in how she performed the task.

Abstract:
Tendons are connective tissue that transmit force to the skeleton. Therefore, mechanical and material properties of the tendon, such as stiffness, strain, stress and Young’s Modulus likely influence force production and control. Men are steadier than women in maintaining isometric elbow flexion force, but the cause of this sex-related difference in force steadiness (FS) has not been established. To-date most FS studies have centred on absolute force as well as motor unit activity, with limited attention given to the interaction between muscle and tendon. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mechanical properties of tendon differ between men and women, and whether this contributes to men being steadier than women. Ten men (23 ± 4years) and 10 women (22 ± 3years) who were healthy and recreationally active participated in a single session to evaluate maximal force, steadiness and tendon properties. Submaximal forces of 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 40% and 60% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) were executed and FS as well as tendon properties were measured during these efforts. Contractions were randomized within and between individuals for the submaximal isometric elbow flexion contractions. All measures were undertaken during the 5 second steady state contraction executed in a neutral wrist position. Results indicated that men were significantly stronger (p < 0.001), steadier (p < 0.001) and the BB tendon was stiffer (p = 0.03) in men than women. Tendon stiffness and CV of force were strongly correlated (r² = 0.60; r = 0.77; p < 0.001) for women but moderately correlated (r² = 0.21; r = 0.46; p < 0.001) for men. Therefore, our results suggest that having a more compliant BB tendon is likely a contributing factor of less stability in the elbow flexors of women compared to men.

Abstract:
Noninvasive viscoelasticity imaging, or “dynamic elastography”, methods have recently been developed to objectively quantify the local viscoelastic properties of soft tissues by measuring the local propagation velocity of mechanical shear vibrations (e.g. faster velocity indicates stiffer material). But, the existing elastography technologies require a potentially uncomfortable external mechanical stimulation (e.g. vibrations probe) to induce muscle vibrations; and sophisticated and expensive imaging equipments (such as MRI and ultrafast ultrasound elastography), involving complex signal processing, to record and analyze these muscle vibrations. The work in this dissertation lays the foundation for the development of a low cost, passive, non-invasive elastography by analyzing and processing Surface Mechanomyograms (S-MMGs) measured with one dimensional accelerometers from the biceps brachii muscle. Aim 1 of this dissertation focused on the 3-dimensional aspect of vibrations measured by accelerometers on the skin surface above the biceps brachii. While Aim 2 focused on using one-dimensional accelerometers to determine the propagation direction of the propagating S-MMG waves. Using this newly developed knowledge on S-MMG Aim 3 was accomplished, a method to analyze the propagating wave and develop a metric that can track the changes in the muscle was developed, namely, the coherence length. The coherence length was found to significantly increase with increased contraction levels for all seven of the subjects. Overall the results of this study show that the propagation features of S-MMG vibrations reflect the architecture and contraction level of the biceps brachii muscle. Hence S-MMG could potentially be used for monitoring physiological changes of skeletal muscles.

Abstract:
Aim: To evaluate the early response to treatment to an antiangiogenetic drug (sorafenib) in a heterotopic murine model of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using ultrasonographic molecular imaging. Material and Methods: the xenographt model was established injecting a suspension of HuH7 cells subcutaneously in 19 nude mice. When tumors reached a mean diameter of 5-10 mm, they were divided in two groups (treatment and vehicle). The treatment group received sorafenib (62 mg/kg) by daily oral gavage for 14 days. Molecular imaging was performed using contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), by injecting into the mouse venous circulation a suspension of VEGFR-2 targeted microbubbles (BR55, kind gift of Bracco Swiss, Geneve, Switzerland). Video clips were acquired for 6 minutes, then microbubbles (MBs) were destroyed by a high mechanical index (MI) impulse, and another minute was recorded to evaluate residual circulating MBs. The US protocol was repeated at day 0,+2,+4,+7, and +14 from the beginning of treatment administration. Video clips were analyzed using a dedicated software (Sonotumor, Bracco Swiss) to quantify the signal of the contrast agent. Time/intensity curves were obtained and the difference of the mean MBs signal before and after high MI impulse (Differential Targeted Enhancement-dTE) was calculated. dTE represents a numeric value in arbitrary units proportional to the amount of bound MBs. At day +14 mice were euthanized and the tumors analyzed for VEGFR-2, pERK, and CD31 tissue levels using western blot analysis. Results: dTE values decreased from day 0 to day +14 both in treatment and vehicle groups, and they were statistically higher in vehicle group than in treatment group at day +2, at day +7, and at day +14. With respect to the degree of tumor volume increase, measured as growth percentage delta (GPD), treatment group was divided in two sub-groups, non-responders (GPD>350%), and responders (GPD<200%). In the same way vehicle group was divided in slow growth group (GPD<400%), and fast growth group (GPD>900%). dTE values at day 0 (immediately before treatment start) were higher in non-responders than in responders group, with statistical difference at day 2. While dTE values were higher in the fast growth group than in the slow growth group only at day 0. A significant positive correlation was found between VEGFR-2 tissue levels and dTE values, confirming that level of BR55 tissue enhancement reflects the amount of tissue VEGF receptor. Conclusions: the present findings show that, at least in murine experimental models, CEUS with BR55 is feasable and appears to be a useful tool in the prediction of tumor growth and response to sorafenib treatment in xenograft HCC.

Abstract: The objective was to evaluate different aging times of the longissimus and triceps brachii muscles, and their influence on the physical and chemical meat aspects from fattening Nelore steers. The animals were kept in individual pens and received diet with no added oil, with in natura or protected linseed oil, during 105 days of feedlot. The roughage used was corn silage (40% of the MS) and diets with addition of oil were isoenergetic (76.0% NDT and 6.1% EE). The animals were slaughtered with 522.71 ± 27.99 kg of body weight and 21-22 months of age. From the left half carcass, muscles were removed and sliced; steaks were aged during zero, seven and 14 days, between 0 and 2 °C in Biochemical Oxygen Demand chamber. Aging time affected the meat lightness, the intensity of red and the water holding capacity. The other variables showed interaction between aging time and muscle, and cooking losses also showed the effect of interaction between aging time and diet. Shear force presented significant effect of aging time on the day 0 and 14; at day 0, the triceps muscle showed lower shear force, while at day 14, longissimus was softer.

ABSTRACT Were tested Longissimus dorsi et lumborum (LTL), Semitendinosus (ST) e Triceps brachii (TB) obtained from six animals ?Guzer? ?Nellore ?Simmental (Tri), six animals ?Guzer? ?Nellore (GN) and six ?Guzer? ?Holstein (GH) recreated with pasture supplementation, 82 days in feedlot and slaughtered at 24 months. We measured the pH24hors, the ability to retain water, lightness (L*), total protein, ether extract, dry matter, fixed mineral residue, redness (a*), yellowness (b*), chroma (C*), hue (H*), cooking weight loss, total collagen and soluble, myofibrillar fragmentation index and shear force. There was no significant effect on pH 24hours (P> 0.05) between the genetic groups on the LTL (5.64), ST (5.72) and TB (5.85). The PH 24hours values of LTL, the reference substrate, were within the normal range (5.3 to 5.7). Genetic groups did not significantly influence the content of fat, the protein, dry matter and mineral, the yellowness, the hue, the weight losses by cooking, myofibrillar fragmentation index, as well as the content of total and soluble collagen. The shear force and the water retention capacity were influenced by genetic groups. The GH group was more tenderness than in the GN group. The capacity of water retention was higher in the GN group than in the GH group, which showed no impact on the main commercial qualities of meat. The content of red and chroma showed interactions among genetic groups and the muscles studied, and the variation in the GH group unlike other genetic groups had lower values in the ST and the other genetic groups had substantially higher values for TB compared to other muscles. Comparing the properties of the different muscles, significant differences were observed in all parameters studied, among them the lowest shear force of TB, and also the ST compared to LTL. This fact might be due to the higher content of fat, the less weight loss by cooking the TB and higher myofibrillar fragmentation index of TB and ST. Also it is assumed that variations in parameters when compared LTL, ST and TB among themselves, might be resulting of anatomical and physiological peculiarities of the muscles that originated them. We can conclude that the genetic groups were similar in almost all quality parameters studied, but lower values of shear force on the GH group. Also was relevant the best quality of TB, measured by objective parameters, compared to the other muscles studied.

Abstract:
Pos/modernidad y (multi)forma en la obra de dos poetas mexicanos contemporaneos: Alberto Blanco y Coral Bracho studies the effects of modernity in Contemporary Mexican poetry. According to literary critics such as Evodio Escalante and Christopher Dominguez, Blanco and Bracho in their radical experimentation of poetic language create a multiform that concedes diverse possibilities of expression. This dissertation is theoretically backed by the works of Nestor Garcia Canclini and Edward O. Wilson, which allow me to underscore the importance and influence of politics, economics, and culture in these Mexican poets. Chapter Two analyzes twenty-two poetic anthologies with the intention of demonstrating the effects of posmodernity in poetic production and diffusion as well as to create a historiographic approach to the generation of poets from the 50s. Chapters Three and Four observe the poetic multiform in the works of Blanco and Bracho respectively. This analysis in grounded in the theoretical insights of Edward O. Wilson that explain how Consilience is the unity of knowledge through science and humanities. Consequently, Blanco explores the various theories of Physics, specifically the fractals and the hologram, while Bracho follows the discourse of Deleuze and Guattari about Rhizomes.

Abstract:
Background: Competitive swimming is a sport that require high muscle strength to overcome the forces in the water. A phenomenon called post activation potentiation (PAP) is known to acutely increase power output. PAP can be defined as an increase in muscle performance after muscle contraction. Previous research on PAP has shown positive effects on different sports, including swimming. However, a limited amount of studies exists on PAP associated with swimming and distances longer than 100 meters. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate if PAP for triceps brachii and latissimus dorsi with elastic bands can improve the aerobic performance, V4-speed, of elite freestyle swimmers. Methods: 13 elite swimmers participated in this study (mean ±SD: age 18 ±1.15). The participants performed three test sessions on two different days. The first occasion evaluated aerobic performance, V4-speed, where the participants performed a 400-m freestyle swim race and lactate and time were collected. At the second occasion, a 10-repetition maximum (RM) elastic resistance band test was done to get the right resistance band for each individual participant for the PAP exercise. At the third occasion, a PAP exercise, that mimics freestyle swim, with elastic resistance band was performed with 10 repetitions in two sets. After, a rest of six minutes was performed and then the same 400-m freestyle swim test as the first occasion. A paired samples t-test was used to evaluate significant differences between the swim test performed with and without a PAP exercise. Results: The study showed no statistical difference between the V4-speed with or without PAP exercise (p=0.93). An increase in lactate was seen after the PAP exercise (p=0.02). Conclusion: This study could not ensure an improvement of the aerobic performance, V4-speed, of elite swimmers when a PAP exercise, similar to a freestyle stroke, was performed before a 400-m submaximal freestyle swim race with elastic resistance band. Further research must be done in this area before coaches and athletes can apply this in training programs.

Abstract:
Abstract Background. The pre-exhaustion (PE) method is a way to target a stronger muscle in a multi-joint exercise by isolating the stronger muscle immediately before the multi-joint exercise. It has been shown that this principle give greater magnitude of muscular activation in the synergistic secondary mover. There is also some indications that the PE method gives a greater neuromuscular activation of the primary mover when PE the synergist. If there are any differences between men and women in muscle activity has never been investigated before. Men have a greater absolute strength than women, especially in their upper body. There are still conflicting results if they also have greater relative strength. Aim. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if there were any neuromuscular differences between men and women when PE triceps brachii before bench press and if there was any differences in relative strength during 10RM bench press. Methods. 15 men and 15 women was randomly signed up in two different protocols. Protocol 1 started with bench press at 10 repetition maximum (10RM) and after five minutes of recovery, they performed the pre-exhaustion exercise (triceps extensions to failure) immediately before a second round of bench press with the same load on the barbell. Protocol 2 started with triceps extensions to failure immediately before bench press at their 10RM. They also had five minutes of recovery before they performed 10 repetitions of bench press. The magnitude of muscular activation were collected with surface electromyography and then processed through average root mean square (RMS). The values were normalized to muscular voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and expressed as percent of MVIC. The muscles that was analysed was triceps brachii (TB), pectoralis major (PM) and deltoideus anterior (DA). Results. The results showed that women had a statistically significantly higher muscular activity in all three muscles; PM (p=0.001) TB (p=0.023) and DA (p=0.047) after pre-exhaustion of TB before bench press compared to only bench press. Men showed only a statistical significant higher activation in PM (p=0.003) and a trend of higher activation in DA (p=0.061). There was a statistically significant difference in muscle activity between women and men in TB (p=0.015) but not in DA (p=0.902) and PM (p=0.436). There was no statistically significant difference between relative strength (volume load/fat free mass) (p=0.775) nor number of repetitions in bench press after PE of TB (p=0.713) between the sexes. Conclusion. The main findings in this study is that it was a statistically significant difference in neuromuscular activity in TB between men and women when PE was applied to TB before the bench press compared to bench press only, but no difference in relative strength.

Introduction: Central nervous system (CNS) uses the motor unit recruitment and the rate coding of the recruited units to control the voluntary force exerted by a muscle. Surface electromyography (sEMG) can be used to capture the electrical signal resulting from the summation of the action potentials of the muscle fibers recruited during the force production. The analysis of the variable root mean square (RMS) and median frequency (Fm) has been used to extract information about the control mechanisms of force used by the CNS. Objectives: To investigate the properties of the electromyographic signal through RMS and Fm variables and analyze the power density distribution in frequency bands in isometric force levels equal to 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MIVC). Methods: The signals were obtained bilaterally from the isometric contraction of the biceps brachii muscle of twenty young healthy volunteers in submaximals force levels. An algorithm was developed to identify the ideal section of the electromyographic signal to be analyzed. The variable RMS, Fm and power density distribution in frequency bands of 5 Hz and 10 Hz were calculated. Results and discussion: The variable RMS increased linearly with increasing force, as expected. The variable Fm had increased between 10% and 30% MVIC and than decreased toward high force levels. This behavior can be related to the experimental protocol as described in the literature. The analysis of the power density distribution in frequency bands showed a concentration of power density in the range between 40 Hz and 50 Hz in 10% MIVC. This power density concentration progressively reduced in 20% to 30% of the MIVC and occurs again on the same frequency range in 40% MVIC. This behavior may be related to increased fibers type IIa and IIb to the force production process. From 40% to 90% of the MIVC the concentration in power density in range between 40 Hz and 50 Hz decreases. Conclusions: The variables extracted from the EMG signal showed behavior compatible with the protocols described in the literature containing submaximal contractions at different levels of MIVC. Their variations may be related to differences in experimental protocol. The analysis of power density distribution in frequency bands can provide additional information being related to the recruitment and rate coding of motor units during the increase in voluntary force.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to make contributions to the knowledge of isometric dynamometry and surface electromyography of the elbow joint. We analyzed the maximal isometric force and inter-intraobserver variability also the electromyographic behavior of biceps and triceps brachii in different dynamic exercises on a population of 23 healthy people. We determined the influence of gender and dominance too. Dynamometric measurements showed higher values of isometric strength in men, showing a high correlation with height and body weight. An ICC>0.71 for all measurements demonstrated the reliability and reproducibility of this method at 90º of elbow flexion. There were no differences between dominant and nondominant side. The sEMG activity increased with the load and intensity of dynamic exercise mainly in the biceps brachii. It showed the great influence of sex and dominance on the results.
