Currently, Liocarcinus puber is commercially fished in the United Kingdom and exported to Southern Europe. The species appears particularly vulnerable to overfishing and has a history of overexploitation. The present study has examined the reproduction, growth and diet of L. puber, to provide information on which to manage this fishery. Immature Liocarcinus puber were first observed in late summer at a size of 6-10mm long carapace width (LCW). The following research deals with the response of the small shore crabs, Hemigrapsus oreqonesis and Hemigrapsus nudus to paralytic shellfish toxins (PST). These shore crabs were shown to develop a remarkable seasonal resistance to administered saxitoxin (STX). No similar change in sensitivity was found after administration of tetrodotoxin (TTX), another marine neurotoxin with similar actions to the PST. Resistance to STX in the small shore crabs was linked to the presence of PST in the viscera, and this in turn was related to the presence of toxic dinoflagellate blooms in the area. Furthermore

Aspects of the growth and reproductive biology of the grapsid brachyuran Hemiqrapsus crenulatus (H. Milne Edwards 1837) have been studied in the Avon-Heathcote Estuary (43° 33'S, 172° 44'E), Christchurch, New Zealand. Relative growth analysis revealed that males became mature between 13.0 and 15.0mm CW whilst females achieved maturity between 9.0 and 11.0mm CW which coincided with the size of the smallest ovigerous females found in the field. This study investigates the predatory behaviour of Cancer novaezelandiae (Decapoda : Brachyura : Cancridae), a subtidal crab from Lyttelton Harbour, Banks Peninsula. Cancer crabs were obtained at bimonthly intervals over a 22 month sampling period. Examination of stomach contents suggested that C.novaezelandiae was an opportunistic predator feeding on a wide variety of food items. In order to study sperm competition and mating dynamics in the snow crab Chionoecetes opilio, a genomic library was established with the goal of identifying highly polymorphic microsatellite markers. Six pairs of DNA primers were designed to amplify markers Cop3-4, Cop4-1, Cop5, Cop10, Cop24-3 and Cop111 by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All markers produced patterns as expected from single loci inherited in a mendelian fashion, except for Cop5 which revealed a multi-locus banding pattern. H.rotundifrons A. Milne Edwards, 1867, the big-handed crab, belongs to the Belliidae and is the only crab representative of this family in New Zealand. It lives in the intertidal zone. The megalopae undergo 13-16 moults to become fully mature at a size of 11-13mm CWo These mature crabs live up to a maximum of 19 years and attain a size of 23-25mm CW (24-26 instars). The laboratory growth curve of H.rotundifrons is asymptotic and there is no terminal ecdysis. Aspects of the biology of the swimming crab, Portunus pe/agicus (Linnaeus, 1758). were investigated from trawl catches from offshore fishing grounds in Bahraini waters (designated areas A [northern], B [north-eastern] and C [southern], a total area of 1636 km2 ) and inshore grounds (traps) around Bahrain over 14 months. The reproductive strategies of four intertidal grapsid crabs, Hemigrapsus sexdentatus, H. crenulatus, Cyclograpsus lavauxi, and Helice cressa, were studied in the field and laboratory, with emphasis on mating behaviour, duration of female receptivity, and sperm competition.
