Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Perception of sounds of a second language (L2) presents difficulties for non-native speakers which can be improved with training (Bradlow, Pisoni, Akahane-Yamada & Tohkura, 1997; Logan, Lively & Pisoni, 1991; Iverson & Evans, 2009). The aim of this study was to compare three different English vowel perceptual training programmes using audio (A), audiovisual (AV) and video (V) modes in non-native speakers with Spanish as native language (L1). 47 learners of English with Spanish as L1 were allocated to three different vowel training groups (AT, AVT, VT) and were given five training sessions to assess their improvement in English vowel perception. Additionally, participants were recorded before and after training to measure their improvement in the production of English vowels. Results showed that participants improved their perception and production of English vowels regardless of their training modality with no evidence of a benefit of visual information. These results also suggest that there is a lot of individual differences in perception and production of L2 vowels which may be related to a complex relation between speech perceptual and production mechanisms.

Knight, David C. "Laura Bradley Park : a rehabilitation master plan." Virtual Press, 1998. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1107210.

Full text
Abstract:
This creative project presented a comprehensive evaluation of the historic significance and integrity of Laura Bradley Park, a 140-acre park in Peoria, Illinois. The evaluation led to the development of a historical rehabilitation master plan. Construction of Bradley Park started in 1896 and many original elements remain intact. The project used two United States National Park Services methods to guide the evaluation process and to identify an appropriate treatment method. The evaluation process determined that Bradley Park was historically significant to both Peoria and the State of Illinois because it was part of the growing park movement that was occurring in Illinois in the late 1800s and reflects the design style used at the time. Inventory and analysis of the park revealed several elements from the original design and construction that remained at the site. Because the park retained historic integrity, the National Park Services "Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Landscapes" was used to identify an appropriate treatment method to restore Bradley Park in some manner. Rehabilitation was chosen as the appropriate landscape treatment method because it allowed the recreation of the original character of the park while maintaining the contemporary recreation facilities.

Bray, Carys. "'A Song for Issy Bradley' : a novel and poetics." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2014. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/6502/.

Full text
Abstract:
This practice-led research with poetics examines, though creative practice, themes of doubt, faith and miracles in a Mormon context. A Song for Issy Bradley (Hutchinson, 2014) is a product of practice-based research and research for form and content. The novel describes the effects of a sudden bereavement on the Bradleys, a Mormon family. The third person narrative moves between the perspectives of each family member as they grieve and re-examine long-held beliefs, amid the comfort and confinement of their religious community. The poetics investigates some of the themes that surfaced during the practice-led research, including the absence of parenthood and domesticity from traditional happily-ever-after endings, the use of autobiography as a feminist resource and the presence of domestic dramas in non-fiction writing as a matter of intersection rather than one of invasion. The poetics discusses the derogatory use of the word ‘domestic’ when referencing fiction written by women and the ‘problem’ of motherhood for female writers. These issues are explored with reference to fiction by Helen Simpson, Carol Shields, Tillie Olsen, Tessa Hadley, Lionel Shriver and Margaret Forster. This is followed by a discussion of the narrative strategies in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, Ali Smith’s The Accidental and Alice Munro’s short stories, with reference to the narrative strategies employed in A Song for Issy Bradley. And finally, the poetics considers silences surrounding women’s life experiences and the illuminating properties of ‘domestic’ fiction and non-fiction.

Abstract:
Labels generated by human experts via comparisons exhibit smaller variance compared to traditional sample labels. Collecting comparison labels is challenging over large datasets, as the number of comparisons grows quadratically with the dataset size. We study the following experimental design problem: given a budget of expert comparisons, and a set of existing sample labels, we determine the comparison labels to collect that lead to the highest classification improvement. We study several experimental design objectives motivated by the Bradley-Terry model. The resulting optimization problems amount to maximizing submodular functions. We experimentally evaluate the performance of these methods over synthetic and real-life datasets.

Abstract:
This paper reports the process of upgrade and enhancement of the Educational CIM Cell at Northern Kentucky University (NKU). The upgrade is part of the laboratory experiments in the Automated Manufacturing Systems Course at NKU. The goal of this paper is to increase students’ practical experience, upgrade the equipments in house, save cost, and reduce the technical dependency on an outside company. In this project Allen-Bradley SLC 100 PLC and Allen-Bradley SLC 150 will be upgraded with a new Allen-Bradley PLC and Panelview operator interface. Comprehensive effort are made to incorporate what has been learned in the MET program to design, manufacture a part, and use robotics and programmed interface for placement onto a conveyor. After the part is placed on the conveyor it will be transferred to a location where the part will be accepted or rejected. Personal computers will be interfaced for simulation, and to actual hardware for control and automation of typical manufacturing operations and industrial processes. This concept of an integrated laboratory system will allow expanded coverage of traditional controls topics and permit introduction of appropriately advanced control techniques including adaptive control for machining operations. This method of modernizing is shown to be more effective than modernizing by a turnkey upgrade of the laboratory Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) facilities.
