Knight, David C. "Laura Bradley Park : a rehabilitation master plan." Virtual Press, 1998. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1107210.

Full text
Abstract:
This creative project presented a comprehensive evaluation of the historic significance and integrity of Laura Bradley Park, a 140-acre park in Peoria, Illinois. The evaluation led to the development of a historical rehabilitation master plan. Construction of Bradley Park started in 1896 and many original elements remain intact. The project used two United States National Park Services methods to guide the evaluation process and to identify an appropriate treatment method. The evaluation process determined that Bradley Park was historically significant to both Peoria and the State of Illinois because it was part of the growing park movement that was occurring in Illinois in the late 1800s and reflects the design style used at the time. Inventory and analysis of the park revealed several elements from the original design and construction that remained at the site. Because the park retained historic integrity, the National Park Services "Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Landscapes" was used to identify an appropriate treatment method to restore Bradley Park in some manner. Rehabilitation was chosen as the appropriate landscape treatment method because it allowed the recreation of the original character of the park while maintaining the contemporary recreation facilities.

Bray, Carys. "'A Song for Issy Bradley' : a novel and poetics." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2014. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/6502/.

Full text
Abstract:
This practice-led research with poetics examines, though creative practice, themes of doubt, faith and miracles in a Mormon context. A Song for Issy Bradley (Hutchinson, 2014) is a product of practice-based research and research for form and content. The novel describes the effects of a sudden bereavement on the Bradleys, a Mormon family. The third person narrative moves between the perspectives of each family member as they grieve and re-examine long-held beliefs, amid the comfort and confinement of their religious community. The poetics investigates some of the themes that surfaced during the practice-led research, including the absence of parenthood and domesticity from traditional happily-ever-after endings, the use of autobiography as a feminist resource and the presence of domestic dramas in non-fiction writing as a matter of intersection rather than one of invasion. The poetics discusses the derogatory use of the word ‘domestic’ when referencing fiction written by women and the ‘problem’ of motherhood for female writers. These issues are explored with reference to fiction by Helen Simpson, Carol Shields, Tillie Olsen, Tessa Hadley, Lionel Shriver and Margaret Forster. This is followed by a discussion of the narrative strategies in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, Ali Smith’s The Accidental and Alice Munro’s short stories, with reference to the narrative strategies employed in A Song for Issy Bradley. And finally, the poetics considers silences surrounding women’s life experiences and the illuminating properties of ‘domestic’ fiction and non-fiction.

Abstract:
Marion Zimmer Bradley's novel The Mists of Avalon is different from the usual episodic versions of the Arthurian legend in that it has the structural unity that the label "novel" implies. The narrative is set in fifth-century Britain, a time of religious conflict between Christianity and the native religions of Britain, especially the Mother Goddess cult. Bradley pulls elements from the Arthurian legend and fits them into this context of religious struggle for influence. She draws interesting family relationships which are closely tied to Avalon, the center of Goddess worship. The author also places the major events during Arthur's reign into the religious setting. The Grail's appearance at Camelot and the subsequent events led to the end of the religious struggle, for Christianity emerged victorious.

The purpose of this paper is to give a log-linear representation of a generalized Bradley-Terry (BT-) Model for paired comparisons which allows the incorporation of ties, order effects, concomitant variables for the objects and categorical subject specific covariates and interactions between all of them. An advantage of this approach is that standard software for fitting log-linear models, such as GLIM, can be used. The approach is exemplified by analysing data from an experiment concerning the ranking of European universities. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
The sensation novels written by Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) in the early 1860s were troublesome for literary critics and readers alike. The present study seeks to reveal how in five of M. E. Braddon's novels, Lady Audley's Secret, Aurora Floyd, John Marchmont's Legacy, Eleanor's Victory and The Doctor's Wife, the author pursued a veritable strategy of narrative blurring through an astute use of vagueness, secrecy, mystery, uncertainty and ambiguity. The setting in which the novels' plots unravel - strange dwellings where temporal and spatial perceptions are drastically skewed - mirror the psychological situation of their characters, who face profound identity crises, hiding their real selves behind a veil of lies and pretence. Yet, far from losing the reader in a labyrinth of incongruities, the recurrent use of uncertainty constitutes the very dynamic of the sensation narrative, toying hermeneutically with its readers, as is best illustrated in the serial form of the novel. It is also a genre, which blurred the frontiers between literary categories, often triggering extreme reactions from Victorian literary critics who were utterly shocked by a popular form of fiction that appealed so strongly to the reader's physical sensations. The ultimate goal of the sensation novel was to move toward a fragile and uncertain clarity, through a slow and chaotic process of revelation. Paradoxically, the blurring strategy of Braddon's novels ultimately served to shed light on the anxieties of an era labouring under the burden of doubt and uncertainty concerning the issues of marriage, sexuality and personal identity

EARLS, JOHN PATRICK. "THE MORAL ARGUMENT OF T. S. ELIOT'S "FOUR QUARTETS" (BRADLEY, ETHICS, NEO-HEGELIANISM, ROYCE)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/183977.

Full text
Abstract:
This study attempts to establish a connection between the moral philosophy of F. H. Bradley, particularly as expressed in his Ethical Studies and modified in the teaching of Josiah Royce, and the moral thought of Eliot's poetic writings, beginning with "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," culminating in Four Quartets, and finding a new mode of expression in the dramas. By tracing Eliot's moral thought to the nineteenth century anti-utilitarian moral controversies out of which Bradley's Ethical Studies grew, this study clarifies Eliot's position in the history of moral philosophy. For Bradley, the end of morality is not self-gratification; it is the realization of the universal will in the will of the individual. Hence the aim of moral action must be away from self-concern and toward the duties that society imposes on the individual. The Absolute, in which all individuals and societies culminate, invites us to true self-realization, while the egotistic self solicits us to physical and spiritual self-indulgence. Royce modifies Bradley's Absolute by making it a redemptive community in which the selfish actions of the past are given new meaning by heroic sacrifices in the present and future. The moral thought of Eliot's poetry and drama closely parallels this ethical system. In these works, Eliot dramatizes situations in which selfless motives are scarcely distinguishable from egotistic needs, merited suffering from heroic martyrdom. In Murder in the Cathedral, for instance, Thomas the Archbishop cannot will his martyrdom for the good of God's kingdom without also willing the gratification of his personal vanity. Four Quartets presents the same moral dilemma working itself out in Eliot's thoughts about his own life. He wonders if he has chosen his life as poet and critic as an unselfish response to duty--and hence as a path to God--or if he has chosen it out of personal vanity. In his considerations of time and eternity he comes to the conclusion that it is possible to redeem past mistakes by the present right intention.

Full text
Abstract:
Clustering with the framework suggested by Bradley, Fayyad and Reina allows for great scalability. However, practical challenges appear when applying the framework. One of the challenges is to define model parameters. This includes defining the number of clusters (K). Understanding how parameter values affect the final clustering may be challenging even with insight into the algorithm. Automating the clustering would allow for a more widespread use. The research question is thus: How could an automated process for clustering with BFR be defined and what results could such a process yield? A tailored method for parameter optimization is suggested. This method is used with a new and computationally advantageous cluster validity index called population density index. Computing the widely used within set sum of squares error requires an additional pass over the data set. Computing population density index does not. The final step of the automated process is to cluster with the parameters generated in the process. The outcome of these clusterings are measured. The results present data collected over 100 identically defined automated processes. These results show that 97 % of the identified K-values falls within the range of the suggested optimal value 2. The method for optimizing parameters clearly results in parameters that outperform randomized parameters. The suggested population density index has a correlation coefficient of 1.00 with the commonly used within set sum of square error in a 32-dimensional case. An automated process for clustering with BFR has been defined.

Abstract:
In this article we suggest a beta regression model that accounts for the degree of preference in paired comparisons measured on a bounded metric paired comparison scale. The beta distribution for bounded continuous random variables assumes values in the open unit interval (0,1). However, in practice we will observe paired comparison responses that lie within a fixed or arbitrary fixed interval [-a,a] with known value of a. We therefore transform the observed responses into the interval (0,1) and assume that these transformed responses are each a realization of a random variable which follows a beta distribution. We propose a simple paired comparison regression model for beta distributed variables which allows us to model the mean of the transformed response using a linear predictor and a logit link function -- where the linear predictor is defined by the parameters of the logit-linear Bradley-Terry model. For illustration we applied the presented model to a data set obtained from a student survey of learning related emotions in mathematics. (authors' abstract)

Abstract:
This study is an exercise of feminist literary criticism applied to selected Arthurian novels written by two contemporary female writers, Mary Stewart and Marion Bradley. In including these writers in an evolving Arthurian tradition, we offer a definition of an Arthurian genre and we survey the narrative and structural constraints it requires. We outline the concepts of identity and that of sexual identity in an attempt to define the terms of our study. We conclude, in line with a feminist argument, that the construction of identity and sexual identity is based less on biological difference than on sociocultural conventions. We note that, in medieval and 19th-century Arthurian traditions, such sociocultural conventions are inscribed in the texts and restrict the definitions of identity and sexual identity to a system of binarisms. We suggest that, in their Arthurian novels, Mary Stewart and Marion Bradley attempt to define identities and sexual identities beyond the restrictions of binarisms by developing difference and differences. They attempt to include differences in the narrative structures of their novels as well as in the social structures they depict. However, we note that their reliance on the Arthurian tradition demands that both authors have to reproduce previous binarisms. We conclude that the narrative and structural constraints of the Arthurian tradition we define in our introduction are incompatible with the requirements of feminism today

Abstract:
Paired comparison models in loglinear form are generalised linear models and can be fitted using the IWLS algorithm. Unfortunately, the design matrices can become very large and thus a method is needed to reduce computational load (relating to both space and time). This paper discusses an algorithm for fitting loglinear paired comparison models in the presence of many nuisance parameters which is based on partition rules for symmetric matrices and takes advantage of the special structure of the design matrix in Poisson loglinear models. The algorithm is implemented as an R function. Some simple examples illustrate its use for fitting both paired comparison models and (multinomial) logit models. (author's abstract)

Abstract:

Abstract:
World War I (1914-1918) brought with it unimaginable disaster and destruction, reshaping the world and its culture forever. Out of the ashes of this unparalleled conflict came numerous triumphs of art, fueled by the surrounding conditions and personal expressions of their artists. English composer, Dr. Cyril Bradley Rootham (1875-1938) set a powerful and haunting poem from the poet Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) titled "For the Fallen” from a larger collection of his poetry called The Winnowing Fan. The poem was published in The Times on September 21, 1914, just seven weeks after the war began. This monograph seeks to bring to light this glorious and overlooked choral/orchestral work at a time of a centennial anniversary for World War I, bringing even more relevance to the subject matter. Another focus of this document is to highlight the musical accessibility of this work and provide resources that function as a platform for performance. A brief background of the composition, the poem, and the poet will assist in giving context to the setting. This document will also cover specific details regarding musical analysis, textual interpretations, and performance practice concepts.

Abstract:
This paper is a case study on Bradley E. Manning, famous for leaking classified intelligence to media, or in the charge sheet’s words: “knowingly give intelligence to the enemy, through indirect means.” My opinion is that this sort of dilemma is a question of values, how you view the world and, most important of all, human rights and the philosophy of rights. Therefore I decided to sort out the arguments regarding the issue of freedom of speech versus the state’s need for protection. To do this I performed a pro et contra analysis from John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty and Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan, this building my theory on which I lean my other work upon. Furthermore, I performed a case study on Manning where I compared the charges and the defense with the arguments of Mill and Hobbes. Ergo: I applied my theory on an existing conflict between freedom of speech and the state’s need for protection to see which arguments that are used in the charge against Manning and if one could derive this from the argumentation analysis consistent of Mill and Hobbes.   Words: 11474

Full text
Abstract:
The following dissertation presents a new paradigm for improving the training of machine learning algorithms, oracle learning. The main idea in oracle learning is that instead of training directly on a set of data, a learning model is trained to approximate a given oracle's behavior on a set of data. This can be beneficial in situations where it is easier to obtain an oracle than it is to use it at application time. It is shown that oracle learning can be applied to more effectively reduce the size of artificial neural networks, to more efficiently take advantage of domain experts by approximating them, and to adapt a problem more effectively to a machine learning algorithm.

Almeida, Guilherme Fumeo.

Abstract:
This work aims to discuss the representation of politics and the politicians in Brazilian miniseries by the example of O Brado Retumbante. As research problem, it is proposed the following: how O Brado Retumbante exemplifies the representation of politics and the politicians by Brazilian miniseries, and how such representations are related to the construction of meanings about politics by the network and to the Brazilian political context? For such, it was formulated the general objective of research the representation of politics and the politicians in Brazilian miniseries by the example of O Brado Retumbante, taking into account the importance of the aesthetic and narratives characteristics of the miniseries in such construction, its relation with the Brazilian political context and the notions of decline of the public man and the disqualification of politics and five specific objectives. They are: a)Describe how the Brazilian political context is presented in O Brado Retumbante and how this is reflected in the representation of the miniseries; b) Relate the representation of politics and politicians with the notions of media depoliticization and decline of public man; c)To discuss how the miniseries builds its characters by entering their dramaturgical construction in a context with a strong presence of heroism, melodrama and social dramatization, especially those who hold political offices; d)Understand how the thematic and narrative model is transformed into technical and aesthetic choices in the miniseries visual and sound construction; e)Relate the relation of the representations about politics of O Brado Retumbante with the buildings on the theme in other miniseries of Rede Globo, in order to understand the networks place of speech in its position on issues related to politics. As main theorical references, was used the discussions of auctors as Sandra Jovcelovitch (2000), Richard Sennett (2014), José Álvaro Moisés (2008), Sérgio Buarque de Holanda (1995), François Jost (2007, 2009 e 2012), Maria Helena Weber (1990 e 2009) and Umberto Eco (1991), and the theorical-methological mark was made by the fictional audiovisual analysis , through names as Metz (1980) and Xavier (2003). This research proposal required a constant dialogue between the empirical object and the social, political, fictional and audiovisual contexts to which he refers, culminating in two categories of analysis, the public and the private and the disqualification of politics. They allowed to understand the specificities of a representation that depicts the institutional policy in an essentially negative way, as an activity whose irremediable corruption can only be fought not by a collective mobilization and strengthening of institutions, but an ordinary man who is transformed accidentally in a president-hero with courage and strength. These negative representations about political activity and its agents are related to Globo's place of speech as dealing in its fictional products on the political theme, reinforcing, through this position, the notion of disqualification of politics as an institutional activity and instrument of collective mobilization.
