Abstract:
The incidence and long-term effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) make it a major healthcare and socioeconomic concern. Cell transplantation may be an alternative therapy option to target prolonged neurological deficits; however, safety and efficacy of the cells must be determined. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an accessible and expandable cell source which circumvent the many of the accessibility and ethical concerns associated with fetal tissues. A major impediment to recent clinical trials for cell therapies in the central nervous system has been the lack of consis

Neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPC) can differentiate to neurons and glial cells. NSPC are easily propagated in vitro and are therefore an attractive tool for tissue regeneration. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause for death and disabilities. A fundamental problem following TBI is tissue loss. Animal studies aiming at cell replacement have encountered difficulties in achieving sufficient graft survival and differentiation. To improve outcome of grafted cells after experimental TBI (controlled cortical impact, CCI) in mice, we compared two transplantation settings. NSPC were tra

Abstract:
This thesis sought to improve our understanding of how kidneys become injured as a consequence of organ donation, with the aim of improving the outcomes of transplantation. Every year, hundreds of patients on the waiting list die whilst awaiting a kidney transplant. With an ever-increasing demand for suitable organs, supply cannot keep up with the pressures on the transplant waiting list. As a consequence the transplant community are forced to use organs that previously would not have been considered suitable for transplant, including from older donors with additional comorbidities. Cette technique permet l'étude des communications paracrines sympathiques réalisées par la noradrénaline (na) et le neuropeptide y (npy). Abstract:
Previous research has identified the medial preoptic area (MPOA) as being critically involved in the mediation of masculine copulatory behavior in mammals. Other research has shown that fetal brain tissue can be transplanted successfully into the brains of adult mammals. The present study sought to determine whether copulatory behavior could be restored in males bearing MPOA lesions by fetal MPOA tissue transplanted into the midbrain. Of 5 rats receiving total MPOA lesions and fetal MPOA transplants, 3 recovered copulatory behavior. Of 3 rats receiving total MPOA lesions and fetal cerebral cor
