Abstract:
H. R. Bramley’s 1884 edition of the English Psalter written by the Yorkshire hermit Richard Rolle (d. 1349), remains the standard edition of Rolle’s influential Middle English translation and commentary. In this essay, I discuss Bramley’s interest in Rolle and the making of his edition in light of Bramley’s biography as an Anglican priest, Oxford University administrator, and scholar. Bramley admired Rolle as a fellow Yorkshireman and as a pastoral-minded contemplative, whose spirituality and teachings were based on the Psalms. Bramley’s own theological writings are akin in certain respects to

AbstractA prevailing image of the British trade-union movement is that it was insular and slow-moving. The Anglo-Russian Advisory Council of the mid-1920s is an episode apparently difficult to reconcile with this view. In the absence to date of any fully adequate explanation of its gestation, this article approaches the issue biographically, through the TUC's first full-time secretary, Fred Bramley (1874–1925). Themes emerging strongly from Bramley's longer history as a labour activist are, first, a pronouncedly latitudinarian conception of the Labour movement and, second, a forthright labour

Fifteen apple cultivars grown in two locations in Norway were investigated for their chemical composition, including polyphenol profiles. Abstract:
In studies of bovine mastitis, it has been repeatedly confirmed that milking is associated with entrance of microorganisms into the mammary gland (International Dairy Federation, 1987; Bramley, 1992). As different husbandry practices apply between cattle and dairy sheep (cows are machine milked, ewes are usually hand milked), results from cows may not always apply to ewes. The objective of this investigation was to determine whether there were differences in bacterial flora populations in the teat duct and mammary secretion of ewes before and after milking.

Apple scab, caused by Venturia inaequalis, is one of the most of damaging diseases worldwide on apple and currently is managed mainly by scheduled applications of fungicides. Understanding pathogen population structure is important for breeding and deployment of resistant cultivars. Isolates of V. inaequalis were sampled from a number of cultivars in China, India, and the United Kingdom to estimate differences in pathogen populations. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were used to genotype isolates, mostly from China and the United Kingdom. The AFLP data indicated that, ove
