Abstract:
Abstract We investigate how communication within banks affects small business lending. Using travel times between a bank’s headquarters and its branches to proxy for the costs of communicating soft information, we exploit shocks to these travel times—the introduction of new airline routes—to evaluate the impact of within-bank communication costs on small business loans. We find that reducing headquarters-branch travel time boosts small business lending in the branch’s county. Several extensions suggest that new airline routes facilitate in-person communications that boost small-firm lending.

AbstractAn analysis of the characteristics of farm businesses by size of FCS direct lending association suggests that further consolidation of FCS lending should have limited negative impacts on credit availability. Commercial-sized farm businesses with FCS real estate debt appeared similar to those who obtained credit from competing lenders, but smaller associations and those with fewer stockholders per branch appeared to serve larger and more wealthy commercial-sized farms.

Abstract:
Foreign banks pulled significant funding from their US branches during the Great Recession. We estimate that the average-sized branch experienced a twelve percent net internal fund “withdrawal,” with the fund transfer disproportionately bigger for larger branches. This internal shock to the balance sheet of US branches of foreign banks had sizable effects on their lending. On average, for each dollar of funds transferred internally to the parent, branches decreased lending supply by about forty to fifty cents. However, the extent of the lending effects was very different across branches depending on their pre-crisis modes of operation in the United States.

Abstract:
This study intends to determine whether a shock that occurred in developed countries, the source of funding, was transmitted to Indonesia through international bank lending both directly and indirectly. The methods used estimated the determinants of international bank lending. International bank lending is one form of capital flows that have the potential for rapid reversal and that can lead to a financial crisis as it has in the past. Understanding the determinants of bank lending is important as it can be used to mitigate the impact of a financial crisis in the future. The empirical results showed that international bank lending, either directly or indirectly, contributed to the Indonesian crisis. During the shock, Indonesia saw global banking contract financing. It was also found that credit activities by foreign affiliates in Indonesia saw a contraction in the country of the parent bank during the shock. However, it was found that the bank lending by foreign affiliates, as joint ventureswere more stable compared to the branch offices of a foreign bank. In aggregate, international bank lending is affected by push and pulls factors such as economic growth (in developed countries and Indonesia), risk factors, and liquidity conditions, both in Indonesia and globally. As for micro-banking models, other than the push and pull factors, the bank balance sheet and other portfolio assets also affected bank lending activities to Indonesia. This paper studies whether distance shapes credit allocation by estimating the impact of bank branch closings during the 2000s on local access to credit. To generate plausibly exogenous variation in the incidence of closings, I use an instrument based on within-county, tract-level variation in exposure to post-merger branch consolidation. Closings lead to a persistent decline in local small business lending. Annual originations fall by $453,000 after a closing, off a baseline of $4.7 million, and remain depressed for up to six years. The effects are very localized, dissipating within six miles, and are especially severe during the financial crisis. (JEL G21, G34, L22, R12, R32)

Abstract:
99,9% of all companies in Sweden are SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises), and these smaller companies are important for the employment rate. Despite this the number of credits for SMEs is decreasing. The bank branches are being closed down, especially in smaller cities, and meanwhile the usage of digital banking services is increasing. There have been several media articles discussing this matter and many believe that the banks only care about the more densely populated urban regions. The problem is that the number of bank branches is decreasing, and this means that the bank personnel and its customers have smaller chances of meeting in person. In this thesis we have studied the relationship between banks and their customers in the SME segment and how it can be affected by the opportunity for contact in person.Earlier studies show that it is beneficial for bank customers, especially SMEs, to have a good relationship with their bank. It increases the possibility for bank credits and for better service. An earlier study regarding bank customers in Hong Kong shows that they are generally illoyal to their banks, and that the cost of changing banks is small compared to receiving bad service. We performed seven semi-structured interviews with bank personnel from smaller cities, and three interviews with their SME customers. These interviews were analyzed with theories regarding relationships, customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. We found that, just like in the theories, personal contact seems to increase customer satisfaction, which also means that the customer loyalty increases. Personal contact is important both for building a relationship and increases the possibility to yield bank credits, especially in the SME segment, because it is difficult to find enough financial information to calculate a good credit score for companies in the segment. The answers from the interviews show that SMEs are generally very loyal to their banks, especially in more rural areas, where there are few banks with local bank branches. In areas with more alternatives the bank personnel can see that customers change banks more often. Some of the banks where we have interviewed personnel are currently closing down or have recently closed down bank branches. This suggests that the number of branches is still decreasing, despite the fact that both the bank personnel and the SMEs we have interviewed believe that the bank branches are important and that local presence and local knowledge create synergy effects for businesses. In the future we would like to see a broader study of the relationship from the businesses’ viewpoint. It would be interesting to study more in detail how important the bank branches, and contact with bank personnel in person, is to businesses in general.

碩士
龍華科技大學
企業管理系碩士班
103
In business activities of Vietnamese commercial banks, credit is one of the activities that generate the highest profit to banks. However, this activity also bears high risks. In order to limit risks, good financial appraisal of project is very important in considering to grant credit to customers and it is a very significant stage in considering and approving credit to customers. If the stage of financial appraisal is good, it will ensure return capacity of the projects, minimize financial damages for the bank, ensure benefits of customers and raise reputation of the bank in market. For such significance, the analysis, measurement and recommendation of solutions to improve effectiveness of financial appraisal of credit projects is very necessary and practically significant for sustainable development of Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam in general and Ha Tay branch in particular. After a time of researching the implementation and consideration of lending at Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam – Ha Tay Branch with combination of theory and practice, being aware of such issue, I choose the topic “Financial analysis of investment project: lending activities of Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Investment and Development Bank” for my graduation thesis.

The result exhibits that the features of customers who apply for larger amount of loans are mostly male, married, aged between 31 and 45, and with average income between 20,000 and 35,000. This suggests that loan officers can promote loans to customers who satisfy the features above to increase loan amount. Keyword: Credit Loans, Market analysis, Customer analysis

Abstract:
碩士
國立雲林科技大學
企業管理系
106
In the operation of the current commercial banks, credit is a business area resulting in the primary sales for banks and this is also an important fund channel for enterprises when the financial markets has not been developed yet. On the Vietnam's current market, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) account for 97% of the total number of enterprises. Therefore, commercial banks in the past time, especially interested in lending to create investments for customers are SMEs. The reason is that the market SMEs is very potential; investing in the object SMEs is low risk and meets the requirements for risk diversification of the Bank. However, in recent years, the difficulties of the economy have caused significant impacts on enterprises, especially SMEs leads to the situation of declaring bankruptcy. This directly affects the operation of the bank credit. Therefore, to improve credit quality, safety and business efficiency, financial evaluation in loans for SMEs is essential and more concern by the banks. BIDV - Hong Ha Branch is one of the credit institutions with a large scale in the Ha Noi capital city. Loan operation for SMEs accounts for the high proportion of total outstanding loans. However, financial evaluation work in loans in the last time has been limited, which results in loan risks and loss of capital city. In the framework of this thesis, the author combines theory and practice to have an overview look of the basic issues relating to the work of the financial evaluation in loans to SMEs, analyzes assessing the situation financial evaluation for SMEs in BIDV - Hong Ha branch, finds the causes of the limitations of this work to propose some solutions to improve the quality of financial evaluation in loan for SMEs in BIDV -Hong Ha branch. Abstract:
Instruments of financing at the housing market allow increasing the efficiency of branch operation, accumulating more money resources, and redistributing them among the segments of this market. The chapter is based on the analysis of the housing markets' functioning in different countries, taking into account the possibilities of their financing. Recommendations have been formulated on the use of the foreign countries' experience in Russian practice in order to improve the efficiency of financing for the housing market in Russia. It is determined that the main instrument of financing at the majority of national housing markets is mortgage lending. The author has analyzed single-level and two-level models of mortgage lending to determine the advantages and disadvantages each of them has. In the German model, such a mechanism is implemented as a system of “building saving,” which involves gradual accumulation of the initial contribution.

This chapter explores how the rise of digital technologies enables new manifestations of racialization in financial services, using Google Fiber’s promises of low-cost high-speed Internet services in Nashville and Kansas City as examples. Akin to redlining in the lending market, Black and Brown communities may experience digital forms of redlining due to limited access to technologies such as high-speed Internet and smartphones that exist alongside the rising number of bank branch closures. At the nexus of financial and digital divides, banks’ overreliance on fintech can reproduce and amplify marginalization. Not only can fintech concentrate wealth, the computer algorithms on which fintech is built can further stitch whiteness into the financial system.

Increasing debt risks suggest African countries’ hard-won market access should not be taken for granted over the next decade. While debt crises, defaults, and severe restructurings would not leave African countries shut out of the markets forever, there could be a long wait with appetites for investment taking many years to return. There are six ways borrowing can be improved to better finance urgently needed investment with less risky lending while preserving market access. Step one: deliver on debt transparency. Step two: deepen domestic debt markets. Step three: generate more flexible financing. Step four: provide market access parachutes. Step five: ensure tighter use of proceeds. Step six: make a solid plan, and build a sustainable brand.

Abstract:
Banking in India has taken various forms and has undergone severeral reforms as and when the markets needed. Because of the growing need, the banks today not only strive for greater profits but also have various social targets like the priority sector lending, setting up various branches in the rural areas, extending loans, encouraging innovation, and setting up new businesses and the like. One of the latest objectives of present day banks was financial inclusion as efforts taken before had not proved very fruitful. The RBI therefore has introduced the concept of differentiated banks where it intends to issue licenses for specialized banks like small and payment banks, infrastructure banks, and so on so that the banks could develop specialized skills and affect greater financial penetration so that the overall objective of financial inclusion could be met. The guidelines have been issued for the first kind of differentiated banks—small and payment banks—and applications have been invited for the same. Though the RBI has taken a very conservative approach for different kinds of banks to co-exist, it may prove to be a step in the right direction and help in greater financial inclusion.
