Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of Cathormion umbellatum extracts against seven antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The pods, leaves and branches of C. umbellatum were extracted with ethanol and methanol. The disc diffusion assay was used to screen the antibacterial activity and broth microdilution and colorimetric assay were used to measure the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values. The result indicated that the highest inhibition zone (11 mm) was presented in ethanolic pods extract against multidrug resistance Klebsiella pneumoniae. The lowest MIC value of 0.05 mg/mL was obtained from branch extracted with ethanol against colistin resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The lowest MBC values of 1.56 mg/mL were obtained when using C. umbellatum leaves extracted with methanol against all test antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This is the first report presented C. umbellatum extracts have the potential to eliminate antibiotic-resistant bacteria in patients. These findings show the antibacterial effect of C. umbellatum.

Abstract:
Abstract The incorporation of local temperature and salinity observations from the Rapid Climate Change–Meridional Overturning Circulation and Heatflux Array (RAPID–MOCHA), as well as the cable estimates of volume transport in the Florida Current (FC), is tested in the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean–Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (ECCO–GODAE) estimation system for their impact on the estimate of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) and the meridional heat transport in the Atlantic. An experimental setup covering the first deployment period of RAPID–MOCHA from March 2004 to March 2005 is used to test different strategies for incorporating these datasets. Incorporating both monthly means of the FC data and monthly means of the RAPID–MOCHA temperature and salinity measurements at the eastern and western boundaries of the basin as an observational constraint in a 1-yr experiment results in an adjustment to the reference estimate, which does not include these datasets, of approximately 1 Sv (1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s−1) in the MOC at 26°N and the adjacent latitudes (approximately ±15°), with a larger northward branch of the MOC above 1000 m, compensated by a larger flow in the southward branch of the MOC between approximately 2000 and 3000 m. The meridional heat transport from 26°N to near 40°N is approximately 0.05 PW larger than in the reference experiment.

Abstract:
AbstractThe most prominent feature of the time-mean global meridional overturning circulation (MOC) is the Atlantic MOC (AMOC). However, interannual variability of the global MOC is shown here to be dominated by Pacific MOC (PMOC) variability over the full depth of the ocean at most latitudes. This dominance of interannual PMOC variability is robust across modern climate models and an observational state estimate. PMOC interannual variability has large-scale organization, its most prominent feature being a cross-equatorial cell spanning the tropics. Idealized experiments show that this variability is almost entirely wind driven. Interannual anomalies of zonal mean zonal wind stress produce zonally integrated Ekman transport anomalies that are larger in the Pacific Ocean than in the Atlantic Ocean, simply because the Pacific is wider than the Atlantic at most latitudes. This contrast in Ekman transport variability implies greater variability in the near-surface branch of the PMOC when compared with the near-surface branch of the AMOC. These near-surface variations in turn drive compensating flow anomalies below the Ekman layer. Because the baroclinic adjustment time is longer than a year at most latitudes, these compensating flow anomalies have baroclinic structure spanning the full depth of the ocean. Additional analysis reveals that interannual PMOC variations are the dominant contribution to interannual variations of the global meridional heat transport. There is also evidence of interaction between interannual PMOC variability and El Niño–Southern Oscillation.

Abstract:
Abstract Numerical models are used to test whether the sea surface height (SSH) can be used as an indicator for the variability of Atlantic meridional oceanic mass transports. The results suggest that if the transports over the western boundary current region and those in the eastern part of the basin are considered separately, significant correlations (0.3–0.9) are found between zonal SSH differences and the meridional transports in the top 1100 m. Much weaker correlations are found for the basinwide transport, which corresponds to the surface branch of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC). For the eastern and western branches of the meridional transport, combining the SSH signal with the baroclinic structure obtained from Rossby wave theory enables calculation of a quantitative estimate of the transport variability in the top 1100 m. The results of the method are less convincing for the variability of the MOC. The reason for this is that even small relative errors in the variability of the eastern and western branches can be large compared with the MOC variability. These errors project onto the sum of the eastern and western transports and therefore onto the surface branch of the MOC. Nevertheless, being able to infer transport anomalies from SSH signals in the eastern and western parts of the Atlantic might prove useful in interpreting MOC observations from the U.K. Natural Environment Research Council Rapid Climate Change (RAPID) mooring array at 26°N, which show a large subannual variability that is mainly due to changes at the western boundary. Transports inferred from the SSH could help to identify the origin of this variability and whether transport anomalies propagate into the western boundary region from the basin interior or from other latitudes.

Abstract:
AbstractThe interbasin exchange of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) is studied in an idealized domain with two basins connected by a circumpolar channel in the southernmost region. Gnanadesikan’s conceptual model for the upper branch of the MOC is extended to include two basins of different widths connected by a reentrant channel at the southern edge and separated by two continents of different meridional extents. Its analysis illustrates the basic processes of interbasin flow exchange either through the connection at the southern tip of the long continent (cold route) or through the connection at the southern tip of the short continent (warm route). A cold-route exchange occurs when the short continent is poleward of the latitude separating the subpolar and subtropical gyre in the Southern Hemisphere (the zero Ekman pumping line); otherwise, there is warm-route exchange. The predictions of the conceptual model are compared to primitive equation computations in a domain with the same idealized geometry forced by wind stress, surface temperature relaxation, and surface salinity flux. Visualizations of the horizontal structure of the upper branch of the MOC illustrate the cold and warm routes of interbasin exchange flows. Diagnostics of the primitive equation computations show that the warm-route exchange flow is responsible for a substantial salinification of the basin where sinking occurs. This salinification is larger when the interbasin exchange is via the warm route, and it is more pronounced when the warm-route exchange flows from the wide to the narrow basin.

Abstract:
AbstractThe meridional overturning circulation (MOC) is studied in an idealized domain with two basins connected by a circumpolar channel in the southernmost region. Flow is forced at the surface by longitude-independent wind stress, freshwater flux, and fast temperature relaxation to prescribed profiles. The only longitudinal asymmetry is that one basin is twice as wide as the other. Two states, a preferred one with sinking in the narrow basin and an asymmetrically forced one with sinking in the wide basin, are compared. In both cases, sinking is compensated by upwelling everywhere else, including the passive basin. Despite the greater area of the wide basin, the residual overturning transport is the same regardless of the location of sinking. The two basins exchange flow at their southern edge by a geostrophic transport balanced by the difference in the depth of isopycnals at the eastern boundaries of each basin. Gnanadesikan’s model for the upper branch of the MOC is extended to include two basins connected by a reentrant channel and is used to illustrate the basic properties of the flow: the layer containing the surface and intermediate water is shallower in the active basin than in the passive basin, and this difference geostrophically balances an exchange flow from the passive to the active basin. The exchange flow is larger when sinking occurs in the narrow basin. A visualization of the horizontal structure of the upper branch of the MOC shows that both the gyres and the meridional flow are important in determining the flow field.

Abstract:
Background: The brand embodied a set of values and attributes which were appropriate, which stimulated consumer interest, which distinguished brand from others and created a unique piece of property for its owners. From marketing point of view, brands are the means that consumers use to distinguish products and services based on essential and non-essential attributes and they are a source of business’s differential advantage. Furthermore, brands communicate tangible and intangible advantages and are attractive to a range of feeling. In order to make decisions for brand strategy, branding plays an important role. Kotler and Keller (2006) state that a brand is needed because it identifies the product, and the responsibility of the product hence lies in the hands of the makers or producers of the product. Brands are important in both consumer and business-to-business situations, where a decision of purchase is needed. A strong brand can create sufficient higher total returns to shareholders than a weak brand. Brands are at the heart of marketing and business strategy ( Doyle,1998, p.165) and building brand equity or strong brands, is considered to be one of the key drivers of a business success ( Prasad & Dev, 2000; p.22). Problem Statement: What are the promotional strategies company’s uses to create International brand in order to pursue the potential customer in B2C marketing environment?? Purpose:The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how firm employ effective promotional tools and techniques to create and sustain international brand in the customers mind. Research design: Both Qualitative and Quantitative method is applied in this thesis. Primary data is collected from interview (E-mail and telephone) and internet survey, while secondary data is gathered from books, journals, and internet source. Conclusion: The promotional tools capabilities can help businesses to spread the messages to the mass market. It is very powerful technique to be used to increase brand awareness of the organization. We found out those promotional tools such as sales promotion, direct marketing, personal selling, publicity, advertisement, and internet marketing play vital role to create international brand.

Abstract:
Previous works proposed that before flowing southward into the Negro-Amazon Rivers, the Branco River had a southwest to northeast course into the Caribbean Sea, which is a hypothesis that needs to be further tested. The present work aimed to reconstitute the geological and geomorphological history in the Quaternary the Branco River in a climatic and tectonic context. Based on integration of remote sensing data deriving from optical images, synthetic aperture radar and digital elevation model, added by cartographic and gravity data allowed to perform: the geomorphological mapping; the analysis of lineament, anomalies and indexes morphostructural aiming characterization tectonics; the morphodynamic analysis of the lower reach of the Branco River; and, as geological data, sedimentological and geochronological analysis of fluvial deposits based on radiocarbon dates and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) in quartz grains. The river valley is incised into fluvial sedimentary units given by Içá Formation displaying ages between 100 and 250 ky (thousand years), which record fluvial sedimentation compatible with meandering channel. The valley fill includes two alluvial plain units. First aggradation phase was between 18.7 ky (OSL age) and 7,592 - 7,754 cal yrs BP (calibrated years before present), and built the upper alluvial plain. Before 5,075 - 4,956 cal yrs BP, this unit has gone through incision, followed by aggradation of the lower alluvial plain which has sedimentation to the current days. The confirmation of alluvial agradation during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and not observation sedimentary load change between UMG and Tardiglacial show a little climatic influence on the development of the Branco River in this time interval. Morphostructural analysis revealed that the alluvial valley of the Branco River truncates megafan residual deposits (i.e., Caracaraí Megafan). This suggests the mega-capture of the current Branco River drainage to the Amazon basin since the late Pleistocene, a process that led to the abandonment of the megafan. Based on morphostructural lineaments, it is possible to suggest predominance efforts with NW-SE orientation, followed by N-S efforts. Structures with these directions control the arrangement of the current drainage network. On the other hand, the climate began to have influence on the fluvial dynamics of the Branco River only from the Holocene. Morphodynamic and sedimentological analysis indicates relative current stability of the Branco River, with low lateral mobility of its banks and islands. These represent residual features of the floodplain resulting from avulsion process locally since the late Holocene or were formed by bars stabilizations. Integrated approach presented in this work can assist in the reconstruction of the geological history of many other tributaries of the Amazon, which may contribute to unravel when and how the drainage basin of the Amazon became established in space and time.

Abstract:
This paper is an examination of the horror elements found in Peter Watts’ Blindsight. In depicting an encounter with aliens, this science fiction novel explores topics such as the nature of sentience, mankind’s relationship with technology, posthumanism, and the limitations of the human body and mind. Blindsight also envisions entities (aliens, vampires, and artificial intelligences) capable of interacting with material realities inaccessible to human beings. Using Levi R. Bryant’s machine-oriented ontology, this thesis demonstrates how Watts employs these themes and issues to problematize anthropocentrism and the notion of selfhood. These elements—and more—will be discussed and shown to match the criteria associated with ontological horror.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been increasing concern that gender bias has prevented women from advancing as rapidly and as frequently as men into management positions. Although the number of women managers has increased, they may experience difficulty moving into upper management positions. The purpose of our research was to study employee gender perception of key variables of women and the positions held in high technology companies. In this research, phenomenological research method was chosen, because the aim of it is to determine what the experience means for the people who have experienced it. Based on the collected data, answers and experiences, structural analysis was done in order to find out the major phenomena of gender perceptions. A number of variables uncover the perception of aspects of policy and gender and barriers that may affect female employees' opportunities for advancement. Using a sample of 30 full-time employees from Company A, the results indicated that position held was significantly different for male and female employees. The results also indicated that neither male nor female employees appeared to notice the apparent perceptions apparently as a glass ceiling within their company and the Implications discussed and recommendations provided. With reference to the Empirical research, this paper increases the knowledge about women’s career development and provides recommendations how to deal with it. It is also expected that this thesis will be helpful to all women who are in the labour market for their career development and advancement.

Grant, Philip. "Exploring Branded Flash Mobs : A study of the impact of branded flash mobs on consumer behavior and consumer experience." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Industriell marknadsföring, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-145132.

Full text
Abstract:
The desire of every marketer is to develop and maintain strong customer relationships. One way this can be accomplished is through effective advertising. Marketers have recently begun to brand flash mobs as a way to effectuate strong brand relationships. Even so, it is unclear whether or not the branding of flash mobs supports or frustrates this pursuit. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to help marketers understand the potential impact that branded flash mobs may have on consumer behaviour and brand relationships. Since these interactions are complex we need to observe the convoluted whole from untangled vantage points. Marketing scholars and researchers must then attempt to understand the latent opportunities and unsuspecting dangers when branding a flash mob. Toward answering this end, four distinct research studies were used to examine the phenomenon from four different perspectives. The aim of the first paper is twofold. First, it deductively seeks to understand how to categorize branded flash mobs within the marketing literature through an historical and cultural analysis of the phenomenon. Exploratory in nature, this study then employs a mixed methods approach to understand how marketers are currently using flash mobs, and more importantly, if branded flash mobs are an effective tool of communication and persuasion. In the second paper, a field experiment was conducted to assess the impact of a branded flash mob on consumers’ emotions, consumer experience and connectedness in a public market. Qualitative interviews were used to capture the data. Shifting perspectives, the third paper seeks to understand why some branded flash mobs fail to ‘go viral’. Using of a number of focus groups, participants were asked to watch several branded flash mob videos and discuss their willingness to share them online (e.g., email, Facebook, or Twitter). Toward a better understanding of the impact of branded flash mobs on brand equity, the final paper evaluates viewers’ attitude toward the ad. Using netnographic techniques (Kozinets, 2002) 2,882 YouTube comments from three virally successful branded flash mobs ads were examined to understand how branded flash mobs affect brand equity. Responses grouped into one of four archetypical attitudes, each of which has a distinct impact on brand equity. Motivated by the potential for widespread exposure at a relatively low cost, marketers continue to produce branded flash mobs. Sometimes they are fresh and creative, while at others they are out of tune with the spirit of the phenomenon. This thesis uncovers the impact of these efforts on consumer behaviour and brand equity, and concludes with a guide for managers to consider when planning their next branded flash mob. An acknowledgement of the limitations and an outline for directions of future research are also presented.

Abstract:
The opioid system of the brain is the major target for opiate drugs such as morphine and heroin, and has been implicated in processes such as pain, stress and reward. Many of these effects take place at the mu opioid receptor (mOR), which is distributed throughout the brain. Significantly, genetic polymorphisms at the mOR may confer a greater dopamine response to the reinforcing effects of alcohol, and it has been suggested that addiction per se may be associated with alterations to the opioid system. There is evidence for the potential efficacy of mOR antagonists (e.g. naltrexone) in reducing drug and alcohol relapse, increasing treatment retention and attenuating the subjective effects of substances of abuse. Medications with partial agonist activity at the kappa opioid receptor (e.g. nalmefene) may also confer an additional clinical advantage by reducing binging following relapse.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the clinical syndrome of chronic multiple organ dysfunction (MOD) following acute critical illness. Chronic MOD, also referred to as chronic critical illness, occurs in patients who have survived the acute phase of their illness or injury but remain dependent on life support for weeks or months. This condition presents unique physiologic and metabolic abnormalities distinct from those encountered in the acute illness. These include neuroendocrine and immune dysregulation, ICU-acquired weakness, persistent respiratory failure, and brain dysfunction. The symptom burden for these patients is high, and long-term survival is limited for elderly patients and those for whom MOD persists for weeks. Comprehensive and systematic programmes will need to be designed and implemented involving bundled best-practice interventions in order to reduce the incidence and treat the consequences of chronic MOD.

AbstractSince approved by the FDA for the treatment of glioblastoma brain cancer in 2015, tumor-treating fields (TTFields) have rapidly become the fourth modality to treat cancer, along with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation [1]. TTFields are now in clinical trials for a variety of cancer types. While efficacy has been proven in the clinic, the higher efficacy is demonstrated in vitro and in animal models, which indicates much greater clinical efficacy is possible. To attain the great promise of TTFields, uncovering the mechanisms of action (MoA) is necessary.

Abstract:
Exposures to fine particulate matter PM2.5 and ozone O3 are associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk. Mexico City residents have lifetime exposures to PM2.5 and O3 above annual USEPA standards and their brains contain high redox, combustion, and friction-derived magnetite nanoparticles. AD pathological changes with subcortical pre-tangle stages in infancy and cortical tau pre-tangles, NFT Stages I-II, and amyloid phases 1–2 are identified by the 2nd decade. Given their AD continuum, a reliable identification of cognitive impairment is of utmost importance. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was administered to 517 urbanites, age 21.60 ± 5.88 years, with 13.69 ± 1.28 formal education years, in Mexican PM2.5 polluted cities. MoCA score was 23.92 ± 2.82, and 24.7% and 30.3% scored ≤24 and ≤22, respectively (MCI ≤ 24, AD ≤ 22). Cognitive deficits progressively targeted Visuospatial, Executive, Language, and Memory domains, body mass index (BMI) impacting total scores negatively (p = 0.0008), aging driving down Executive, Visuospatial, and Language index scores (p < 0.0001, 0.0037, and 0.0045), and males performing better in Executive tasks. Average age for AD MoCA scores was 22.38 ± 7.7 years. Residency in polluted cities is associated with progression of multi-domain cognitive impairment affecting 55% of Mexican seemingly healthy youth. Normal BMI ought to be a neuroprotection goal. MoCA provides guidance for further mandatory neuropsychological testing in young populations. Identifying and lowering key neurotoxicants impacting neural risk trajectories in the developing brain and monitoring cognitive performance would greatly facilitate multidisciplinary early diagnosis and prevention of AD in high risk young populations. Cognitive deficits hinder development of those representing the force moving the country in future years.

Chapter 1 establishes the American political and mercantile environment into which the Chinese woman Afong Moy was thrust when she arrived in 1834. It explores the lives and the economic motivations of the Carnes merchant family, whose business focused on selling inexpensive Chinese goods to middle-class Americans. Having a branch of the Carnes firm in France enabled them to select French goods which were then cheaply replicated in China for the United States market. Their ship captain, Benjamin Thorndike Obear, and his wife, Augusta, brought Afong Moy from China to the United States, entwining their lives with hers in unexpected ways. The Chinese goods that accompanied Afong Moy affected thousands of American households.

Abstract:
Similar to psychiatric issues, brain health issues (e.g., dementia and cognitive aging) are characterized by their complexity, multisystemic nature and broad societal impact, hence making them poorly suited to siloed approaches of thinking and innovation. Brain health, like mental health, also involves the integration of insights from the mind, the brain, and behavior. Therefore, the authors that propose a more integrated approach is required for brain health innovation and suggest convergence science as an instructive model to consider. Sixty-eight percent of the dementia cases will occur in low-and-middle income countries. The diagnosis of dementia is accompanied by high caregiver burden, high financial costs for the family and few therapeutic alternatives. By telling the history of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Memory Aging Center (MAC) and the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI) we present a promising case of convergence science in brain health. Both integrates diverse disciplines and professionals. The USCF MAC integrates dementia care, research, education, and GBHI. GBHI integrates several professionals from developing countries to reduce the impact of dementia around the world.

Abstract:
Branding in pharmaceutical markets is more challenging than any other market due to the enormous regulations and restrictions from governmental bodies like MOH, Ministry of Health. This case tackles a real challenge that one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Egypt is facing. Since the company has a well-established brand that has been in the market for more than 30 years, this brand has strong brand equity and is well known by consumers, end users. In the past 5 years with the devaluation of the Egyptian currency, the price of the active ingredients increased. Accordingly, the gross margin of the brand was highly affected, to the extent that it reflects losses in the net operating income. In any other market, it might be an option to increase the price and enhance the gross margin, but in the pharmaceutical industry, companies are price takers and only MOH has the right to set the price.

Abstract:
Fast numerical approaches have recently been proposed to compute the undamped nonlinear normal modes (NNMs) of discrete and structural systems, and these have enabled remarkable insights into the nonlinear behavior of more complicated systems than are tractable analytically. Ardeh et al. recently proposed the multi-point, multi-harmonic collocation (MMC) method, which finds a truncated harmonic description of a structure’s NNMs. The MMC algorithm resembles harmonic balance but doesn’t require any analytical pre-processing nor the computational expense of the alternating time-frequency method. In a previous work this method showed significantly faster performance than the shooting method and it also allows the possibility of truncating the description of the NNM to avoid having to compute every internal resonance. This work presents a pseudo-arc length continuation version of the MMC algorithm which can compute a branch of NNMs and compares its performance with the shooting/pseudo-arc length continuation algorithm presented by Peeters and Kerschen in 2009. The algorithms are compared for two systems, a two degree-of-freedom (DOF) spring-mass system and a 10-DOF model of a simply-supported beam.

Abstract:
The aim of this survey was to find the best way for the extraction of essential oils from the Acacia dealbata Link. floral raw materials, as well as discover samples of elite perfumery products of various brands that use this aroma in perfumery compositions. Two methods of extraction with a volatile hydrocarbon solvent were used, namely, 1) Soxhlet extraction; 2) extraction of raw materials by the method of triple infusion in a solvent at a low positive temperature (+ 3 °C). To obtain absolute, concrete was extracted in a classical manner. In the first variant, the yield of concrete was 1.46 % of the weight of raw materials; in the second – 1.18 % but its aroma was more delicate. The content of absolute in the samples was 28.4 % and 24.6 % of the concrete mass, respectively. Famous brands using mimosa fragrance are L`Artisan Parfumeur (Mimosa Pour Moi), Jo Malone (Mimosa & Cardamom), Dolce & Gabbana (Velvet Mimosa Bloom), Calvin Klein (Eternity Summer), Kenzo (Summer by Kenzo), etc.

Abstract:
Multi-objective optimization (MOO) problems are encountered in many applications and a number of approaches have been proposed to deal with this kind of problems. Despite the computational efforts, the quality of the Pareto front is also a considerable issue. An evenly distributed Pareto front is desirable for developing analytical expressions. In this paper, a brand new approach called Normalized Circle Intersection (NCI) is proposed, which is able to efficiently generate a Pareto front with evenly-distributed Pareto points for bi-objective problems, no matter the feasible boundary is convex or not. Firstly, the anchor points are computed using an existing sequential MOO (SMOO) approach. Then in the normalized objective space, a circle with a radius of r centering at one of the anchor points or the latest obtained Pareto point is drawn. The intersection of the circle and the feasible boundary, which exists for sure, can be determined whether it is a Pareto point or not. For a convex or concave feasible boundary, the intersection is exactly the Pareto point to be found, while for a non-convex boundary the intersection can provide useful information for searching the true Pareto point even if it self is not a Pareto point. A novel MOO formulation is proposed for NCI correspondingly. Four examples, including two numerical and two engineering examples, are provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method. Comparison of the computational results with WS, NNC and SMOO shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.
