Abstract:

Brane Tilings represent one of the largest classes of superconformal theories with known gravity duals in 3+1 and also 2+1 dimensions. They provide a useful link between a large class of quiver gauge theories and their moduli spaces, which are the toric Calabi-Yau (CY) singularities. This thesis includes a discussion of an algorithm that can be used to generate all brane tilings with any given number of superpotential terms. All tilings with at most 8 superpotential terms have been generated using an implementation of this method. Orbifolds are a subject of central importance in string theory.

Non-abelian target space duality and its effect on low energy string backgrounds is investigated, with particular emphasis on Taub-NUT space. The dual solutions are analysed and the physical effects of the duality are discussed, along with the interrelationship between successive applications of target space duality. In the first part of this thesis we discuss some of the issues arising in extending the ABJM action of multiple M2-branes to include couplings to the background 3-form field. These couplings are analogous to the Myers-Chern-Simons terms of the multiple D2-brane action. We review and extend previous results to include terms which are quadratic in the background 3-form. Abstract:

We derive fully covariant expressions for all two-point scattering amplitudes of two massless closed strings from a Dirichlet p-brane. This construction relies on the observation that there is a simple relation between these D-brane amplitudes in type II superstring theory and four-point scattering amplitudes for type I open superstrings. From the two-point amplitudes, we derive the long range background fields for the D-branes, and verify that as expected they correspond to those of extremally charged p-brane solutions of the low energy effective action.

In the spirit of the work of P. Baum and R. Douglas in K-homology, we construct a set of abelian groups which define homotopy functors from the category of finite CWpairs onto the category of graded abelian groups. These we prove to be isomorphic to the geometric representation of KO-homology, the homology theory associated to KO-theory, constructed by M. Jakob. This thesis is concerned with obtaining black brane solutions to Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged N=2 supergravity that obey the strong, Planckian version of the third law of black hole mechanics. We first construct a new two-parameter family of black brane solutions to gauged N=2 supergravity in four dimensions using time-like dimensional reduction as a solution generating technique. In this thesis the close relationship between the topological $K$-homology group of the spacetime manifold $X$ of string theory and D-branes in string theory is examined. An element of the $K$-homology group is given by an equivalence class of $K$-cycles $[M,E,\phi]$, where $M$ is a closed spin$^c$ manifold, $E$ is a complex vector bundle over $M$, and $\phi: M\rightarrow X$ is a continuous map.
