Abstract:
The paper presents the algorithm of fatigue life estimation for materials with out-of-parallel fatigue characteristics under block loading. Brass CuZn40Pb2, medium-alloy steel 30CrNiMo8 and high-alloy steel 35NCD16 belong to such materials. Brass CuZn40Pb2 was used for analysis. The experimental results were compared with those calculated according to the assumed model, and satisfactory results were obtained.

Abstract:
This study explores the hot forging process of CuZn40Pb2 brass alloy water valve covers through a combination of finite element modeling and experimental trials. Key factors influencing defect formation, such as the cylindrical workpiece geometry and die temperature, are examined in detail. Simulations using Deform 3D software focused on the impact of temperature on material flow behavior, incorporating inputs such as geometry, filling sequence, and applied force. Experimental findings underscored the crucial role of the friction coefficient, which diminishes with the use of lubricants, in controlling material flow. The reduction in friction, caused by heat generated from die friction during forging, was found to elevate the risk of defects. Stress and strain analysis from the simulations revealed a complex interaction between temperature and friction, significantly affecting defect formation. The strong correlation between simulation and experimental results confirmed the value of computational modeling in predicting and preventing defects. This research provides valuable insights into optimizing hot forging parameters for CuZn40Pb2 brass alloy components, enabling improvements in product quality and process efficiency.

The paper presents an algorithm of fatigue life determination for materials with no parallel fatigue characteristics under pure bending and pure torsion. The presented model uses the iteration method, and the applied fatigue criterion is function of the ratio of normal and shear stresses coming from bending and torsion, respectively. Three materials were applied for analysis: CuZn40Pb2 brass, 30CrNiMo8 medium-alloy steel and 35NCD16 high-alloy steel.

Abstract:
The increasing restriction of lead in industrial alloys, particularly in copper–zinc-based materials such as CuZn40Pb2, necessitates the development of environmentally safer alternatives. ZnAl15Cu1Mg (ZEP1510), a zinc-based wrought alloy composed of 15% aluminum, 1% copper, 0.03% magnesium, with the remainder being zinc, has emerged as a promising candidate for lead-free applications due to its favorable forming characteristics and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the performance of ZEP1510 compared to conventional leaded copper alloys and galvanized steel. Corrosion behavior was evaluated using neutral salt spray testing, cyclic climate chamber exposure, and electrochemical potential analysis in chloride- and sulfate-containing environments. ZEP1510 exhibited corrosion resistance comparable to brass and significantly better performance than galvanized steel in neutral and humid atmospheres. Combined with its low processing temperature and high recyclability, ZEP1510 presents itself as a viable and sustainable alternative to brass with lead for applications in sanitary, automotive, and electrical engineering industries.

Abstract:
The properties of thin hard coatings and consequently their functionality are influenced by microstructural characteristics such as mechanical properties. A variety of interlayers has been used in hybrid coatings for various purposes. The paper presents investigation results of the structure, erosion and corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties of the galvanic Ni/Cr, hybrid Ni/Cr + Zr/ZrN (galvanic + PVD) and monolithic nitride coatings deposited by PVD technique (dc magnetron sputtering) onto brass (CuZn40Pb2) substrates. The ceramic PVD coatings or layers are the Cr-, Ti-, TiAl-, Zr-nitrides. The investigation covered the metallographic analysis on the scanning electron microscope, mechanical properties and erosion test. The corrosion tests were made in a 1 M NaOH solution. It was found out that PVD coatings display high corrosion resistance.

Surface roughness is one of the most significant factors to indicate the product quality. Diamond turning is an efficient and highly accurate material removal process to improve the surface quality of the workpiece. In the present study, the arithmetic mean absolute roughness (Ra) and total height of profile (Rt) of spherical surface during finish turning of a commercial brass alloy CuZn40Pb2 were modeled using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experimental investigations were carried out using the Central Composite Design (CCD) under dry conditions. The effect of cutting parameters such as spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut) on spherical surface quality was analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). A cuckoo search (CS) algorithm was used to determine the optimum machining parameters to minimize the surface roughness. Finally, confirmation experiments were carried out to verify the adequacy of the considered optimization algorithm.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper presents the results of research on changes in the damping characteristics of the MZGS100 fatigue test stand. The work of the stand is influenced by the type of material of the tested samples, where different properties affect the dynamic characteristics of the stand. It is important to assess the impact of changes in properties during the test on the work of the test stand. Fatigue tests were carried out for three materials: S355J0 steel 2017A-T4 aluminium alloy and CuZn40Pb2 brass. The tests were carried out under fatigue bending loads for the number of failure cycles in the low-cycle range. During the investigation, the test was interrupted and the impulse response of the stand at various stages was recorded and the change in system response was assessed. It was observed that in the case of brass, the damping curve of the system changed continuously, and the damping factor of the system increased by 23%. In the case of steel, practically no changes were noticed, while the aluminium alloy showed changes of 9%. In the final stage of the test for steel and aluminium alloy, a change in the frequency of natural vibrations was observed, which indicates a decrease in the system stiffness caused by the weakening of the specimen's cross-section. This effect was not noticed for brass samples, which together with the change of the damping coefficient indicates a cyclical change of the material properties.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the cavitation erosion (CE) and sliding wear (SW) resistance of cold-sprayed Al/Al2O3 and Cu/Al2O3 composites and studies them in relation to a set of metallic materials such as aluminium alloy (AlCu4Mg1), pure copper (Cu110), brass (CuZn40Pb2) and stainless steel (AISI 304). The coatings were deposited on stainless steel by low-pressure cold spray (LPCS) using Al (40 wt.%) and Cu (50 wt.%) blended with Al2O3 (60 and 50 wt.%, respectively) feedstocks. CE resistance was estimated by the stationary sample method according to the ASTM G32 standard. The SW test was conducted using a ball-on-disc tester with compliance to the ASTM G99 standard. Results obtained for the LPCS coatings show that the Cu/Al2O3 coating exhibits a denser structure but lower adhesion and microhardness than Al/Al2O3. The Al/Al2O3 and Cu/Al2O3 resistance to cavitation is lower than for bulk alloys; however, composites present higher sliding wear resistance to that of AlCu4Mg1, CuZn40Pb2 and stainless steel. The CE wear mechanisms of LPCS composites start at the structural discontinuities and non-uniformities. The cavitation erosion degradation mechanism of Al/Al2O3 relies on chunk material detachment while that of Cu/Al2O3 initiates by alumina removal and continues as layer-like Cu-metallic material removal. CE damage of metal alloys relies on the fatigue-induced removal of deformed material. The SW mechanism of bulk alloys has a dominant adhesive mode. The addition of Al2O3 successfully reduces the material loss of LPCS composites but increases the friction coefficient. Coatings’ wear mechanism has an adhesive-abrasive mode. In both CE and SW environment, the behaviour of the cold-sprayed Cu/Al2O3 composite is much more promising than that of the Al/Al2O3.
