AbstractThis paper discusses the Brauer–Manin obstruction on double covers of the projective plane branched along a plane section of a Kummer surface from both the practical and the theoretical points of view. Theoretical highlights include the determination of a complete set of generators for the Brauer group; on the practical side, we give several surfaces with a Brauer–Manin obstruction and verify that the Brauer–Manin obstruction is the only one for a collection of several thousand surfaces of this type.

1. Let V be a non-singular rational surface defined over an algebraic number field k. There is a standard conjecture that the only obstructions to the Hasse principle and to weak approximation on V are the Brauer–Manin obstructions. A prerequisite for calculating these is a knowledge of the Brauer group of V; indeed there is one such obstruction, which may however be trivial, corresponding to each element of Br V/Br k. Because k is an algebraic number field, the natural injectionis an isomorphism; so the first step in calculating the Brauer–Manin obstruction is to calculate the finite group H1

A conjecture of Scharaschkin and Skorobogatov states that there is a Brauer–Manin obstruction to the existence of rational points on a smooth geometrically irreducible curve over a number field. In this paper, we verify the Scharaschkin–Skorobogatov conjecture for explicit families of generalized Mordell curves. Our approach uses standard techniques from the Brauer–Manin obstruction and the arithmetic of certain threefolds.

AbstractGiven systems of two (inhomogeneous) quadratic equations in four variables, it is known that the Hasse principle for integral points may fail. Sometimes this failure can be explained by some integral Brauer–Manin obstruction. We study the existence of a non-trivial algebraic part of the Brauer group for a family of such systems and show that the failure of the integral Hasse principle due to an algebraic Brauer–Manin obstruction is rare, as for a generic choice of a system the algebraic part of the Brauer-group is trivial. We use resolvent constructions to give quantitative upper bound

AbstractWe prove that the Brauer–Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of integral points on affine varieties over global fields of positive characteristic $p$. More precisely, we show that the only obstructions come from étale covers of exponent $p$ or, alternatively, from flat covers coming from torsors under connected group schemes of exponent $p$.

AbstractThe Brauer–Manin obstruction is a concept which has been very effective in finding counter-examples to the Hasse principle, that is, sets of polynomial equations which have solutions in every completion of the rational numbers but have no rational solutions. The standard way of calculating the Brauer–Manin obstruction involves listing all thep-adic solutions to some accuracy, at finitely many primesp; this is a process which may be time-consuming. The result described in this paper shows that, at some primes, we do not need to list allp-adic solutions, but only those lying over a close

In this thesis, we study the Hasse principle for curves and K3 surfaces. We give several sufficient conditions under which the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for curves and K3 surfaces. Using these sufficient conditions, we construct several infinite families of curves and K3 surfaces such that these families are counterexamples to the Hasse principle that are explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction.

This thesis explores one of the essential arithmetical and diophantine properties of Shimura curves and their Atkin-Lehner quotients: the existence of rational points on these families of curves over both number fields and their completions. Due to their moduli interpretation, Shimura curves (and modular curves) are of great arithmetic significance. The research line started by the work of Mazur on rational points on modular curves, leading to the classification of rational torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over Q, has been intensively and successfuly explored by many authors, and the gene
