Macrocyclic alkanes are novel markers derived from the algaenan of Botryococcus braunii (B. braunii) independent of the race of B. braunii. Analysis of a crude oil (Leatherjacket–1, Cretaceous) and a sediment from the Gippsland Basin (Flounder–1 well, Cretaceous) reveal the presence of macrocyclic alkanes, suggesting an input to the organic matter from freshwater alga B. braunii. This is the first report of macrocyclic alkanes in Australian crude oils and in sediments other than torbanites. Abstract:
Summary Lucky bamboo (Dracaena braunii) is a popular ornamental plant in Iraq. Individuals of this plant showing stem and root rot symptoms were observed during a survey conducted from November 2015 to February 2016 in several nurseries in Kerbala province, Iraq. Based on morphological characteristics and sequence analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA), the pathogen was identified as Fusarium proliferatum. This is the first report of stem and root rot caused by F. proliferatum on lucky bamboo (D. braunii) in Iraq.

Botryococcus braunii produce liquid hydrocarbons able to be processed into combustion engine fuels. Depending on the growing conditions, the cell doubling time can be up to 6 days or more, which is a slow growth rate in comparison with other microalgae. Few studies have analyzed the cell cycle of B. braunii. We did a bioinformatic comparison between the protein sequences for retinoblastoma and cyclin-dependent kinases from the A (Yamanaka) and B (Showa) races, with those sequences from other algae and Arabidopsis thaliana.
