Abstract:
This article deals with representations of equator crossings in travel literature. Focusing on the accounts of European travelers to Brazil, it considers descriptions of crossing-the-line ceremonies that were performed on board ships since the sixteenth century and shows that, since the late eighteenth century, writers have increasingly staged crossings of the equator as an individual and private experience. Furthermore, it addresses the relation of travel and knowledge that descriptions of equator crossings establish by referring to distinctive epistemological approaches to the New World and by producing a “liminal knowledge” characteristic of travel narratives. The article draws on travel literature from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, paying special attention to the postromantic description of an equator crossing in Claude Lévi-Strauss’s famous memoir Tristes Tropiques.

The short note represents a travel “journal”, prepared between the end of October 2020 and the end of January 2021, in the Brazilian state of Ceará and in Rio de Janeiro. It includes brief descriptions of glimpses of everyday life, in the vague search for an anthropological gaze; reflections or rather attempts to develop an embryonic analysis; confused evocations of feelings and memories. The pandemic cannot be ignored, but the note shows how social distancing cannot occur in Brazilian society. Despite this, Brazil does not have a higher number of deaths than European countries, but lower.

Abstract:
At the time of his death, in 1704, the library of John Locke held 269 volumes of philosophy—but 275 volumes of geography and travel. Works of geography drew on discoveries related in books of travel, but Locke did nevertheless see them as distinct genres. In both, his holdings were extensive. He owned several volumes of maps; the great recent surveys of Africa, America, and Japan printed by John Ogilby; and the descriptions of the world by Abbot, Purchas, Morden, and Moll. It was in books of travel, though, of which Locke owned 195, where his holdings were most remarkable. He owned the massive collections of Ramusio (in Italian), de Bry (in Latin), Thévenot (in French), and Hakluyt and Purchas (in English). He owned accounts of the well-known voy- ages of Hariot to Virginia, de Léry to Brazil, Sandys to the Ottoman Empire, Gage to the West Indies, and Choisy to Siam. He owned as well accounts of dozens of more minor voyages, such as those of Blount to the Levant, Monconys to Syria, Ray to the Continent, Josselyn to New England, and Fryke to the East Indies. No student of Locke’s library has failed to remark upon what Harrison and Laslett, its modern editors, have called its ‘great strength’ in these areas. This is to understate the matter, for it seems that among libraries of its size in late Stuart England, only the library of Robert Hooke (and perhaps that of Robert Boyle) rivalled Locke’s in works of geography and travel.

Abstract:
Over many centuries forest fires destroyed forests on a large scale. Historically, Russia possessed and still possesses the largest forest area in the world, twice as large as that of its nearest rival, Brazil. With such vast wooded areas, Russia has encountered the problem of forest fires many a time. Russian archives store numerous documents concerned with this natural occurrence, mostly the accounts and reports prepared by public servants (forest rangers, inspectors, etc.). In the times of the Russian empire, the mentions of forest fires could be also found in the periodicals, forest management manuals prepared by arboriculturists, legal acts, and even in the paintings. The works of the travelers and explorers, based on the expedition materials, notes and observations, hold a special place among the sources concerned with forest fires. The participants in the 18th – 19th century geographic expeditions had themselves witnessed this natural disaster and captured their experiences on paper. With the vast geography of travels and expeditions, the information contained in these works allows to reconstruct the overall picture of the situation with forest fires in the Russian Empire.

Abstract:
Campsurus Eaton is the second most speciose genus of mayflies in South America and, until recently, one of the most problematic. The scenario was so disorganized that the description of new species was strongly discouraged. In 2010 the genus started to be revised and, after more than ten years of advances, the taxonomic impediment was drastically reduced, facilitating new researches. The new evidence allowed us to investigate specimens of this genus collected from Amapá and Mato Grosso States, Brazil, which were impossible to assign to any species in the past. As results, two new species are described, Campsurus fortuitus sp. nov. and Campsurus froehlichi sp. nov.; and new records are provided for Campsurus cuyuniensis Traver, Campsurus indivisus Ulmer, Campsurus inusitatus Molineri & Salles, Campsurus jorgenseni Esben-Petersen, Campsurus litaninensis Spieth, Campsurus nessimiani Molineri & Salles, Campsurus pereirae Molineri & Salles and, Campsurus segnis Needham & Murphy.

Abstract:
The type species of the genus Campsurus Eaton 1868, Campsurus latipennis (Walker 1853), is redescribed, and some historical problems about its identity are addressed; notably, specimens had been assigned to two different species almost since its description. The nymph of C. latipennis is described for the first time. The following species are redescribed and/or rediagnosed: C. cuyuniensis Traver 1947, C. essequibo Traver 1947, C. lucidus Needham & Murphy 1924, C. indivisus Ulmer 1942 (=C. duplicatus Spieth 1943 syn. nov., nymph described for the first time here), C. litaninensis Spieth 1943, and C. segnis Needham & Murphy 1924. Eleven new species of Campsurus are described and illustrated: C. salobra sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), C. nessimiani sp. nov. (based on male imago and nymph), C. dasilvai sp. nov. (based on male imago), C. zunigae sp. nov. (=Campsurus sp. B Traver 1947; based on male imago and nymph), C. pereirae sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), C. janae sp. nov. (based on male subimago), C. demeni sp. nov. (based on male imago), C. sinamari sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), C. inusitatus sp. nov. (=Campsurus sp. D Traver 1947; based on male imago), C. cotaxe sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), and C. povilla sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos, nymph). The unknown female adult of C. amapaensis Molineri & Emmerich 2010 is described for the first time. Campsurus vulturorum Emmerich & Molineri 2011 is reported from Brazil for the first time. A key to separate male imagos of species of Campsurus is provided.

In order to analyze how foreign travelers reported and portrayed Brazil, the following research had been devoted to Jean-Baptiste Debret's analyzes of iconographic and written sources. Debret's artistic history at the court of Napoleon Bonaparte had greatly influenced his choice as a historical painter of the court of D. João VI and later of D. Pedro I after his coming to Brazil as part of the "Mission" Artistica Francesa, closely following all the events of the monarchy in the tropics. Through the study of his works, we realized that his role was not only as a historical painter, but also a picturesque painter, with a vast collection of representations of the daily life and culture of the Brazilian people, especially in the city of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract:
This dissertation analyses the populational descriptions written by Richard Francis Burton between 1849 and 1869, published in his books of travel above the regions of India, Arabic Peninsula, East, Central and West Africa, and Brazil (travels achieved between 1847-1867). The aim of this work is to note the transformations in these descriptions and connect them with the authority position, the experience of each travel, and the production of British ethnology and anthropology around those years. The hypothesis is that these elements interact in the construction of the author’s writings, and that the understanding of these descriptions’ contents become much more effective when this interaction is considered. Burton’s ambiguous positions, specially on the debates between monogenic and poligenic theoretic options, become more understandable when observed by the point of view which analyses his descriptions throughout the observation of these three elements.

Abstract: This thesis analyzes some aspects of a travel narrative - Roteiro do Maranhão a Goiaz passando pela Capitania do Piauhi - written by an anonymous author. In the last years of the XVIII century, this writer made a long journey through the Portuguese colonies in the Amazon region. In his "Roteiro", the traveler elaborates an important colonization plan aimed at founding a state organization in one of the most desert and uncivilized areas of the Portuguese colonies. In order to plot this course of action, the author uses all his knowledge about economy, in the way that it was understood in XVIII century Portugal.

Assim, alto e baixo, vastidão e infinitude, luzes e trevas, vilania e nobreza, paraíso e inferno, feiúra e beleza, ordem e desordem, vida e morte se entrelaçam no percurso do viajante ideal.
Abstract: To study the representations of Brazilian Amazon and to translate Henry Major Tomlinson's The Sea and the Jungle are the main purposes of this thesis. The book was written by a British journalist who in the month of December 1909, released from his work at Morning Leader and boarded S. S. England in a coal port in Swansea, Wales. After crossing Atlantic ocean, the author arrived in Para, Brazil, and from there, he steamed up the Amazon and Madeira Rivers to Porto Velho the current capital of Rondonia State that was then the initial point of MadeiraMamore Railway. The steamership carried coal and machinery to the railway. It is exactly alongside of its track, between Porto Velho and Hell's Cauldron Falls extension that the londoner peregrin undertakes his journal with Marion Hill, his Texan guide whom he met when he arrived at that port in the Jungle. The Sea and the Jungle stablishes relation of intertextuality to Homer's Odissey and it contains sailor's stories and hero's adventures and descriptions of true and mythical world that contribute to the subject's construction. As the book explores travelers and peregrin's discourses, we follow some paradigms: Michel Foucault's notion of discourse and "arts of existence"; the first is in his books A arqueologia do saber and A ordem do discurso; the second is in História da sexualidade: o uso dos prazeres. We follow too some notions derived from PostColonial and Utopian Studies, Literary Criticism, as well as Phylosophy and Asthetics. The Sea and the Jungle reflects and refracts determined social reality of two worlds, traveler's and travelee's, that is the object of the traveler's writing. Throughout this "dancing of mirrors" we investigate to what dimension the narrator criticizes his society from some glances that he projects on others communities. Moreover, we ask how the narrator builds up himself by using references to old travelers, (Hakluyt, Humbolt, Pikes, Wallace, Bates, etc.), some philosofic streaming (Pyrronism e Gymnosofism), to writers such as H. D. Thoreau, R. W. Emerson, F. Drake, D. Spruce; biblical characters as (Moses, Jons, Josuah), to some legends and Greek and Roman myths which he brings to the stage of his literary composition. The argumentative pivot of this thesis is that this travel writing presents itself first as a political and moral criticism to England and Brazil. Second, as an exercise of high thoughts towards the Sublime, "the soul of rethoric body", according to Weiskel when quoting Longino. The representations of the Amazon are configured now as Elysium sometimes as Hell. So, height and lowness, vastness and infinity, light and darkness, villainy and nobility, heaven and hell, ugliness and beauty, order and disorder, life and death are interlaced in the ideal traveller's enterprise. Therefore the author goes beyond writing about the seen, he also makes the reader see

"An investigation into the coverage of diverse forms of tourism in South African travel magazines." Thesis, University of Port Elizabeth, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/339.

Full text
Abstract:
There have been several changes in tourism in South Africa since 1994. During apartheid, black people were not allowed to become involved in important aspects of tourism, particularly at management level. However, this situation is changing and all cultures are gradually becoming engaged in th e tourism industry. The economic progress of the black community has resulted in the materialization of cultural villages, tourism projects to give rural people jobs, and an increase in township tourist attractions, heritage tours, etc. These initiatives have led to the establishment of certain types of tourism such as cultural tourism, urban tourism and community-based tourism. It could be said without hesitation, at the prescientific level, that the diversity in cultures, for one, is a major attraction of this country. Another change has been the increase in tourism from countries which have been excluded from South Africa in the past. Examples of these are African countries such as Kenya and Nigeria, as well as countries on other continents, including India, Bangladesh and the East-European bloc. Up to 2003/4, South Africa experienced the longest uninterrupted period of economic growth in its history. This resulted in people being able to afford a higher standard of living and therefore having more money to spend on travelling. as the economic growth stimulated the growth of tourism, both local and foreign, in the country. Seen from the perspective of the tourism industry, it is important to keep the public informed and up to date about what a country has to offer in order to maintain the increase in tourism. The media assist in this process. The travelling public is informed by word of mouth, but also through newspapers, magazines, television and radio. Information about the different attractions, whether cultures, wildlife or sport, et cetera, would not always be easy to find, were it not for the media. As tourism grows, more tourist attractions will develop, with a bigger need for tourists to be informed as an immediate result. The role of the media in this information giving is th erefore constantly on the increase.

Abstract:
Based on open data on cities and transport, the present study proposes an approach that uses travel probabilities and graph-oriented database to identify possible disease propagation routes within the Brazilian territory. Route identification was implemented by adapting the Dijkstra algorithm in the Data Science module of Neo4j. A tool called Epiflow was also developed to allow visual exploration of the proposed approach. Validated by COVID-19 data, the approach successfully predicted routes for large geographical areas of risk, such as states. These findings suggest that transport data and graph databases can be used to create applications that assist decision-making in tracking disease spread in the early stages.

Abstract:
Abstract The brownfields offshore Brazil comprise over 11,000 km of subsea pipelines and risers, 700 subsea Christmas-Trees and 60 manifolds, all interconnected with more than 50 platforms. These fields offer promising investment opportunities due to enhanced reservoir knowledge and the utilization of existing production infrastructure. This paper presents a selection of subsea innovations and technologies developed to overcome the challenges associated with the revitalization, infill and subsea tieback projects of Marlim, Voador, Marlim Sul, Marlim Leste, Jubarte, Albacora, Barracuda/Caratinga, Roncador, Tartaruga Verde, and Espadarte brownfields. A brief description of the subsea systems of the above-mentioned projects is also presented, as well as the main challenges associated with each one.

Abstract:
This paper hopes to contribute to the understanding of the determinants of poverty and inequality in Brazil, identify some of the main challenges and spell out policy implications for reducing poverty and inequality over the short term (next three or four years) and medium term (next decade or two). The analysis presented here hopes to contribute to this discussion by: i) providing a description of the key features of the evolution of Brazil¿s poverty and inequality over the last two decades based on the latest available data; ii) using analytical tools to distinguish between the main features of poverty and inequality (the symptoms) and their probable determinants (the causes); and iii) identifying some of the key policies to address those determinants and thus contribute to the permanent reduction in Brazil¿s poverty and inequality .

von Sperling, Marcos. Urban Wastewater Treatment in Brazil. Inter-American Development Bank, August 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0009301.

Full text
Abstract:
The major focus of this report is the description and critical analysis of the main wastewater treatment processes used in Brazil. Special emphasis is given to small to medium size communities with populations lower than 100,000 inhabitants, which represent approximately 95% of the 5,570 Brazilian municipalities. In terms of coverage, around 40% of the sewage generated in Brazil is treated, with an estimated number of treatment plants in the order of 2,800. Based on a survey of 2,187 treatment plants, the configurations most widely adopted are: anaerobic pond followed by facultative pond; UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge blanket) reactor; activated sludge; ponds followed by maturation ponds; septic tank followed by anaerobic filter. An assessment of the actual performance of 166 treatment plants showed a great variability in the effluent concentrations and in the removal efficiencies, with performances that were usually inferior to those reported in the technical literature. Data on capital cost expendituresindicated values ranging from R$60/inhabitant to R$650/inhabitant, depending on the treatment process employed. Due to the favorable climatic conditions in Brazil, there are no technical limitations for the adoption of biological sewage treatment. Traditional options incorporate stabilization ponds and activated sludge, but the more recent trend involves the adoption of UASB reactors followed by some form of post-treatment.

Full text
Abstract:
This report, commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies, finds that 42,000 lives could be saved and 150,000 serious injuries prevented by 2030 if all new cars in seven G20 countries were required to be equipped with an inexpensive crash avoidance technology starting in 2020. Thirteen G20 counties currently adhere to United Nations regulations on electronic stability control (ESC). If the seven remaining countries—Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa—also mandated ESC in 2020, the report estimates $21.5 billion in economic benefit to those countries from the prevention of deaths and serious injuries. Argentina and Brazil are due to start applying ESC regulations in 2020. The UK-based Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) conducted the independent study of costs and benefits of applying ESC regulation in G20 countries, which are responsible for 98% of the world’s passenger car production. This report comes before the 3rd Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Stockholm, which is the largest gathering of governments and is a key opportunity for adoption of this UN-recommended standard. According to the World Health Organization’s Global Road Safety Report, the number of road traffic deaths reached 1.35 million in 2016. Of all vehicle safety features, electronic stability control is regarded as the most important one for crash avoidance since it is 38% effective in reducing the number of deaths in loss-of-control collisions. ESC tries to prevent skidding and loss of control in cases of over-steering and under-steering. The technology continuously monitors a vehicle’s direction of travel, steering wheel angle and the speed at which the individual wheels are rotating. If there is a mismatch between the intended direction of travel and the actual direction of travel, as indicated by the steering wheel position, ESC will selectively apply the brakes and modulate the engine power to keep the vehicle traveling along the intended path. The cost of implementing ESC on vehicles that already contain anti-lock braking systems is thought to be as little as $50 per car. And the report finds the benefits are significant: For every dollar spent by consumers in purchasing vehicles with these technologies, there is a US$2.80 return in economic benefit to society because of the deaths and serious injuries avoided. The analysis warns that without regulation of ESC, the seven remaining G20 countries will only reach 44% installation of ESC by 2030. However, if all seven countries implemented ESC regulations this year, 85% of the total car fleet in G20 countries will have ESC by 2030, a figure still below the United Nations target of 100% ESC fleet coverage by 2030.

Abstract:
In Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil and Honduras, the tomato borer, Neoleucinodes elegantalis, is the most important fruit-related plague of the Solanaceae family. A suitable molecular characterization using a DNA barcoding system is necessary to clarify different issues inside the taxonomy of Neoleucinodes genus. Additionally, other DNA sequences used for molecular identification and phylogenetics studies, can be implemented to obtain a better understanding of the genetic variability across different animal groups and allows to acquire a enhanced description of the population s genetic variation. The main objectives of this study are: 1. Evaluate the performance of DNA barcoding sequences (COI gen and 18S rDNA gene), in the genetic characterization of populations of N. elegantalis, collected in different wild and cultivated solanaceous plants in Colombia and Ecuador. 2. Determination of possible haplotypes related with each population belonging to this species. 3.Identification of geographical patterns associated with the distribution of this insect.

Abstract:
Historically, a network of roadside sensors and cameras have been used to monitor freeway conditions. Although these systems are effective, they are typically not operational in and around work zones. Furthermore, it is often not financially viable to deploy in-road sensors and cameras in rural areas. Connected vehicle trajectory data has emerged as a viable source of data and provides a unique opportunity for monitoring freeways. This monograph describes how these connected vehicles can be used to directly measure queue lengths and travel times and this description is summarized in a graphical format easily used by agencies to make management decisions. Approximately 50 use cases are described to demonstrate these techniques under diverse conditions, such as lane reductions, short term closures, rolling slowdowns, work zone set up, work zone removal and inclement weather. A number of the use cases were selected from Indiana locations that had good ITS camera coverage to provide context-sensitive information to help the reader understand the graphics. In addition, several case studies are presented from selected states around the country to demonstrate the scalability of these techniques.

Full text
Abstract:
The Latin American and Caribbean region has pursued a variety of policies with respect to slum upgrading and prevention, but the available literature does not provide a description of these experiences and their outcomes. This book examines the policies of three countries in the region, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia, which are notable for the breadth of their policy interventions and their diversity. These three countries have taken different routes but together provide a strong representation of the panoply of choices. The policies share a common feature of emphasizing access to housing of slum residents, but de-emphasizing other key issues related to slums, including fundamental issues of urban development. While this characterization of the region's policies is well known, the design and diversity of the policies that led to these outcomes are not. A key lesson of this book is that there are many methods to upgrade slums by improving the supply of housing for the poor, including slum clearance combined with resettlement and new housing developments without slum clearance. However, by failing to address broader issues that promote the emergence of slums, they may not leave slum residents any better off than they were before.

This study analyzes mobility patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic for eight large Latin American cities. Indicators of mobility by socioeconomic status (SES) are generated by combining georeferenced mobile phone information with granular census data. Before the pandemic, a strong positive association between SES and mobility is documented. With the arrival of the pandemic, in most cases, a negative association between mobility and SES emerges. This new pattern is explained by a notably stronger reduction in mobility by high-SES individuals. A comparison of mobility for SES decile 1 vs decile 10 shows that, on average, the reduction is 75% larger in the case of decile 10. According to estimated lasso models, an indicator of government restrictions provides a parsimonious description of these heterogeneous responses. These estimations point to noticeable similarities in the patterns observed across cities. We also explore how the median distance traveled changed for individuals that travel at least 1 km (the intensive margin). We find that the reduction in mobility in this indicator was larger for high-SES individuals compared to low-SES individuals in six out of eight cities analyzed. The evidence is consistent with asymmetries in the feasibility of working from home and in the ability to smooth consumption under temporary income shocks.
