Abstract:
This article deals with representations of equator crossings in travel literature. Focusing on the accounts of European travelers to Brazil, it considers descriptions of crossing-the-line ceremonies that were performed on board ships since the sixteenth century and shows that, since the late eighteenth century, writers have increasingly staged crossings of the equator as an individual and private experience. Furthermore, it addresses the relation of travel and knowledge that descriptions of equator crossings establish by referring to distinctive epistemological approaches to the New World and by producing a “liminal knowledge” characteristic of travel narratives. The article draws on travel literature from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, paying special attention to the postromantic description of an equator crossing in Claude Lévi-Strauss’s famous memoir Tristes Tropiques.

Abstract:
The short note represents a travel “journal”, prepared between the end of October 2020 and the end of January 2021, in the Brazilian state of Ceará and in Rio de Janeiro. It includes brief descriptions of glimpses of everyday life, in the vague search for an anthropological gaze; reflections or rather attempts to develop an embryonic analysis; confused evocations of feelings and memories. The pandemic cannot be ignored, but the note shows how social distancing cannot occur in Brazilian society. Despite this, Brazil does not have a higher number of deaths than European countries, but lower.

Abstract:
At the time of his death, in 1704, the library of John Locke held 269 volumes of philosophy—but 275 volumes of geography and travel. Works of geography drew on discoveries related in books of travel, but Locke did nevertheless see them as distinct genres. In both, his holdings were extensive. He owned several volumes of maps; the great recent surveys of Africa, America, and Japan printed by John Ogilby; and the descriptions of the world by Abbot, Purchas, Morden, and Moll. It was in books of travel, though, of which Locke owned 195, where his holdings were most remarkable. He owned the massive collections of Ramusio (in Italian), de Bry (in Latin), Thévenot (in French), and Hakluyt and Purchas (in English). He owned accounts of the well-known voy- ages of Hariot to Virginia, de Léry to Brazil, Sandys to the Ottoman Empire, Gage to the West Indies, and Choisy to Siam. He owned as well accounts of dozens of more minor voyages, such as those of Blount to the Levant, Monconys to Syria, Ray to the Continent, Josselyn to New England, and Fryke to the East Indies. No student of Locke’s library has failed to remark upon what Harrison and Laslett, its modern editors, have called its ‘great strength’ in these areas. This is to understate the matter, for it seems that among libraries of its size in late Stuart England, only the library of Robert Hooke (and perhaps that of Robert Boyle) rivalled Locke’s in works of geography and travel.

Abstract:
Over many centuries forest fires destroyed forests on a large scale. Historically, Russia possessed and still possesses the largest forest area in the world, twice as large as that of its nearest rival, Brazil. With such vast wooded areas, Russia has encountered the problem of forest fires many a time. Russian archives store numerous documents concerned with this natural occurrence, mostly the accounts and reports prepared by public servants (forest rangers, inspectors, etc.). In the times of the Russian empire, the mentions of forest fires could be also found in the periodicals, forest management manuals prepared by arboriculturists, legal acts, and even in the paintings. The works of the travelers and explorers, based on the expedition materials, notes and observations, hold a special place among the sources concerned with forest fires. The participants in the 18th – 19th century geographic expeditions had themselves witnessed this natural disaster and captured their experiences on paper. With the vast geography of travels and expeditions, the information contained in these works allows to reconstruct the overall picture of the situation with forest fires in the Russian Empire.

Abstract:
Campsurus Eaton is the second most speciose genus of mayflies in South America and, until recently, one of the most problematic. The scenario was so disorganized that the description of new species was strongly discouraged. In 2010 the genus started to be revised and, after more than ten years of advances, the taxonomic impediment was drastically reduced, facilitating new researches. The new evidence allowed us to investigate specimens of this genus collected from Amapá and Mato Grosso States, Brazil, which were impossible to assign to any species in the past. As results, two new species are described, Campsurus fortuitus sp. nov. and Campsurus froehlichi sp. nov.; and new records are provided for Campsurus cuyuniensis Traver, Campsurus indivisus Ulmer, Campsurus inusitatus Molineri & Salles, Campsurus jorgenseni Esben-Petersen, Campsurus litaninensis Spieth, Campsurus nessimiani Molineri & Salles, Campsurus pereirae Molineri & Salles and, Campsurus segnis Needham & Murphy.

Abstract:
The type species of the genus Campsurus Eaton 1868, Campsurus latipennis (Walker 1853), is redescribed, and some historical problems about its identity are addressed; notably, specimens had been assigned to two different species almost since its description. The nymph of C. latipennis is described for the first time. The following species are redescribed and/or rediagnosed: C. cuyuniensis Traver 1947, C. essequibo Traver 1947, C. lucidus Needham & Murphy 1924, C. indivisus Ulmer 1942 (=C. duplicatus Spieth 1943 syn. nov., nymph described for the first time here), C. litaninensis Spieth 1943, and C. segnis Needham & Murphy 1924. Eleven new species of Campsurus are described and illustrated: C. salobra sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), C. nessimiani sp. nov. (based on male imago and nymph), C. dasilvai sp. nov. (based on male imago), C. zunigae sp. nov. (=Campsurus sp. B Traver 1947; based on male imago and nymph), C. pereirae sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), C. janae sp. nov. (based on male subimago), C. demeni sp. nov. (based on male imago), C. sinamari sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), C. inusitatus sp. nov. (=Campsurus sp. D Traver 1947; based on male imago), C. cotaxe sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos), and C. povilla sp. nov. (based on male and female imagos, nymph). The unknown female adult of C. amapaensis Molineri & Emmerich 2010 is described for the first time. Campsurus vulturorum Emmerich & Molineri 2011 is reported from Brazil for the first time. Abstract:
Abstract Background The 2016 Olympic and Paralympic games were held in Brazil after the peak of an explosive Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak. The risk to US athletes and support staff of travel-associated ZIKV and other arboviral infections was unknown but concern was high. Methods Individuals traveling with the US Olympic Committee (USOC), including Olympic and Paralympic athletes and support staff were enrolled. Participants provided a pre- and post-travel (2–12 weeks) blood samples, and were also counseled about mosquito avoidance. Participants completed pre- and post-travel surveys detailing demographics, health history, vaccination, mosquito protection, and symptoms during and up to 2 weeks after travel to Brazil. Blood samples were tested at ARUP Laboratories, Utah, for ZIKV IgM and for Chikungunya (CHKV), Dengue (DENV), and West Nile (WNV) viruses IgM and IgG. Recent infection was defined as the presence of IgM in a post-travel blood sample and or IgG seroconversion. Results A total of 950 individual subjects provided pre-travel samples and surveys. Of these, 457 (48%) also provided post-travel samples. No ZIKV infections were detected by IgM. However, 48 (11%) participants had antibody evidence of other arboviral infections; 4 (0.9% tested) with CHKV, 6 (1.3%) with DENV, and 39 (9%) with WNV. Of these, new travel-associated infection was confirmed in 32 (7%); 3 of 4 CHKV, 2 of 6 DENV, and 27 of 39 WNV. Twelve (38%) of the subjects with travel associated arbovirus infection submitted post-travel surveys; 3 (25%) respondents had symptoms of arboviral infection during or within 2 weeks after travel; 2 (16%) CHKV, and 1 (8%) WNV. Those with travel-associated arboviral infections had similar demographics, and exposure whilst in Brazil, but were less likely to use mosquito repellent than athletes without arboviral infection (7/12 (58%) vs. 130/154 (84%), OR 0.26, P = 0.04). Conclusion ZIKV was not detected in the USOC athletes or staff traveling to Brazil. Other arboviral infections were detected in 7% of travelers, with WNV being most common. The use of mosquito repellent was associated with decreased risk of infection. This study demonstrates multiple arboviruses in addition to ZIKV were circulating simultaneously in Brazil and has implications for pre- and post-travel counseling. Disclosures C. L. Abstract:
Counseling for human immunodeficiency virus infected travelers is becoming increasingly specialized. Previous studies have reported the experience of HIV-infected travelers from temperate-climate countries but little is known about HIV-infected travelers from tropical countries. A retrospective study was conducted on HIV-infected travelers presenting at a travel health clinic in Rio de Janeiro. Eleven journeys by ten people were recorded. Brazil (Amazon region and Northeast) was the destination for six journeys. Other destinations were Peru, Angola, Europe and Asia. Nine attendees were undergoing antiretroviral therapy. Few HIV-infected people from Rio de Janeiro consulted a travel medicine specialist before traveling. Since they travel to destinations in Brazil and abroad where there are endemic diseases not encountered in Rio de Janeiro, careful pre-travel planning needs to be undertaken. Strategies for increasing the frequency of pre-travel consultations need to be developed, such as closer collaboration between HIV clinics and travel health clinics.

With its blends of Amerindian, African and European sources, Brazil has one of the richest and most diverse musical cultures in the world. Primitive tribal musics flourish in the Amazon, rural and urban regions practise many folk/traditional forms, and cosmopolitan art music has been produced since before the time of Villa-Lobos. Various musics that can be considered popular reflect both this wide national spectrum and the impact of international mass media pop music. Here, a description of the major tendencies in contemporary urban popular music of Brazil will be followed by bibliographical and discographic indications for further study or research.

Abstract:
AbstractNumerous scholars have sought to locate the origins of social scientific research in the late-sixteenth-century ars apodemica, the northern European body of literature dedicated to methodizing educational travel. Little attention has been paid, however, to the earlier model of educational travel that emerged from sixteenth-century Venetian diplomatic culture. For many Venetian citizens and patricians, accompanying an ambassador on a foreign mission served as a cornerstone of their political education. Diplomatic travelers were encouraged to keep written accounts of their voyage. Numerous examples of these journals survive from the sixteenth century, largely following a standard formula and marked by an emphasis on the description of customs. This article examines the educational function of diplomatic travel in Venice and the practices of cultural description that emerged from diplomatic travel, arguing that Venetian diplomatic travel offers an earlier model for the methodization of travel—one with its own distinctive norms of observation.

Abstract. The theory of travel time and residence time distributions is reworked from the point of view of the hydrological storages and fluxes involved. The forward and backward travel time distribution functions are defined in terms of conditional probabilities. Previous approaches that used fixed travel time distributions are not consistent with our new derivation. We explain Niemi's formula and show how it can be interpreted as an expression of the Bayes theorem. Some connections between this theory and population theory are identified by introducing an expression which connects life expectancy with travel times. The theory can be applied to conservative solutes, including a method of estimating the storage selection functions. An example, based on the Nash hydrograph, illustrates some key aspects of the theory. Generalization to an arbitrary number of reservoirs is presented.

Abstract:
Episodic memory (memories of the personal past) and prospecting the future (anticipating events) are often described as mental time travel (MTT). While most use this description metaphorically, we argue that episodic memory may allow for MTT in at least some robust sense. While episodic memory experiences may not allow us to literally travel through time, they do afford genuine awareness of past-perceived events. This is in contrast to an alternative view on which episodic memory experiences present past-perceived events as mere intentional contents. Hence, episodic memory is a way of coming into experiential contact with, or being again aware of, what happened in the past. We argue that episodic memory experiences depend on a causal-informational link with the past events being remembered, and that, assuming direct realism about episodic memory experiences, this link suffices for genuine awareness. Since there is no such link in future prospection, a similar argument cannot be used to show that it also affords genuine awareness of future events. Constructivist views of memory might challenge the idea of memory as genuine awareness of remembered events. We explain how our view is consistent with both constructivist and anti-causalist conceptions of memory. There is still room for an interpretation of episodic memory as enabling genuine awareness of past events, even if it involves reconstruction.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives: to analyze abortions provided by law (APL) carried out in Brazil between 2010 and 2019 regarding the need for travel of users, as well as the expenditure of time and money on these trips. Methods: descriptive study of records of outpatient care and hospitalizations for APL between 2010 and 2019. The municipal provision and the inter-municipal flows for the realization of the APL, the availability of public transportation for this travel, as well as its cost and time, were identified. Results: 2.6% of Brazilian municipalities had a sustained provision of APL between 2010 and 2019. Of the 15,889 APL performed, 14.8% occurred in municipalities other than those where the user lived. The smaller the population size of the municipality of residence, the higher the percentage of the need for travel. Of these inter-municipal trips, 16.0% had regular round-trip links by public transport. The total travel time ranged from 26 minutes to 4 and a half days, and the cost from R$2.70 to R$1,218.06; the highest medians were among residents of the Midwest region. Conclusions: the concentration of services, the deficiency of inter-municipal public transport, and the expenditure on travel to access the APL are barriers to users that need the health service, demanding public policies to overcome them.

The research shows the use of the Gurobi Optimizer library in Python Software associated with using Miller-Tucker-Zemlin (MTZ) constraints to ensure a viable route circuit. Through the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), two viable optimal routes are presented for two research problems: i) minimize the distance of access to the PEJ from the city of Palmas -TO and ii) find an optimal route path for tourists considering some of the most relevant points of the PEJ. The study presents a viable solution to route problems and contributes with an actual model, showing that TSP and the use of restrictions MTZ can be adequate to solve these problems and others to be solved in PEJ.

Introduction: Emerging countries have increased their presence in international travel (46.8% of travels). Pre- and post-travel consultations may provide insights about travelers’ health. Methods: A retrospective descriptive analysis of the medical data of all travelers assisted at Ambulatório dos Viajantes, a free public health clinic for travelers in São Paulo, Brazil, from January to December 2016 was performed. The patients were profiled based on post-travel consultation data and screened by gender, age according to the United Nations working-age population distribution (0-14 years, children; 15-24 years, youths; 25-65 years, working age; over 65 years, older persons), travel destination, and diseases that affected travelers. Results: In 2016 (n=280 appointments), 93.92% of clients received some type of vaccine (regular or booster dose). Post-travel consultations (n=27; 9.64%) were predominantly male (62.96% of appointments) and comprised cases of malaria (44.4%; 6 positive cases of Plasmodium falciparum, 4 positive cases of Plasmodium vivax, and 2 unclassified), fever (7.4%), AGE - acute gastroenteritis (7.4%), hepatitis A (3.7%), nausea (3.7%), insect bite (3.7%), abdominal pain (3.7%), arthralgia (3.7%), vaginal discharge (3.7%), and cases under investigation (18.5%). Brazilian travelers presented the same incidence of post-travel counseling as developed countries’ travel medicine clinics (~9%). Conclusion: Immunization in pre-travel counseling may reduce the importation of preventable infectious diseases and increase Brazilians’ traveler vaccine coverage, a current concern in the country.

Abstract This study aimed to systematically review scientific evidence on the barriers and facilitators of physical activity (PA) among the Brazilian population, considering different domains (leisure, travel, work/study, and household). The search was conducted in the MEDLINE/PubMed, ISI Web of Science, SCOPUS, BIREME/LILACS, and APA PsycNET databases and was limited to papers published between 2010 and 2020. A manual search of the Brazilian Journal of Physical Activity & Health was also conducted. The selection process consisted of screening titles and abstracts, followed by the analysis of full texts. Each paper was assessed by two independent reviewers, and when discrepancies arose, a third reviewer was consulted. Leisure, environmental barriers and facilitators were the most investigated domains in the 78 included studies. There was consistency in the positive associations between six different intrapersonal and social facilitators for leisure PA and one environmental factor for travel. There have been a small number of investigations on the work/study and household domains, and future investigations on intrapersonal and social barriers and facilitators in the travel domain are important.

Abstract:
This article considers the ways in which eighteenth-century womens travel narratives function as autobiographical texts, examining the process by which a travellers dislocation from home can enable exploration of the self through the observation and description of place. It also, however, highlights the complexity of the relationship between two forms of writing which a contemporary readership viewed as in many ways distinctly different. The travel accounts considered, composed (at least initially) in manuscript form, in many ways contest the assumption that manuscript travelogues will somehow be more self-revelatory than printed accounts. Focusing upon the travel writing of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Katherine Plymley, Caroline Lybbe Powys and Dorothy Richardson, the article argues for a more historically nuanced approach to the reading of womens travel writing and demonstrates that the narration of travel does not always equate to a desired or successful narration of the self.

Abstract:
Traditional methods for travel demand estimation are often built on socioeconomic and travel information. The information required to conduct such studies is costly and rarely available in developing countries. Besides, some conventional methods do not consider the spatial relationship of variables and, in general, a large amount of socioeconomic and individual travel data is required. The key aim of this paper is to evaluate the importance of considering spatial information when estimating travel mode choices especially considering the lack of available data. The study area is the São Paulo Metropolitan Area (Brazil) and the dataset refers to an Origin-Destination Survey, conducted in 2007. This research paper analyzes the use of Geostatistics when estimating discrete travel mode choices. The results demonstrated a satisfactory outcome for the geostatistical approach. Finally, although socioeconomic and travel variables have greater explanatory power in predicting travel mode choices, spatial factors contribute to better understand the travel behavior and to provide further information when estimating spatially correlated data.

Abstract:
Mobility in the metropolitan region of São Paulo has declined in recent decades in spite of a general growth in motorization and living standards. Some important factors have been overlooked in the analysis of mobility. These relate to the evolution of sociodemographic attributes and to temporal changes in behavior: ( a) changes in the population structure, primarily concerning the characteristics and social roles of women; ( b) changing behavior concerning car ownership, a key factor behind mobility; and ( c) temporal changes in the travel behavior of homogeneous groups of the population. Three results stand out from a cross-section analysis: the main factors behind mobility concern attributes that are changing in the population; these factors affect men and women differently; and significant differences in the travel behavior of men and women are related to the sociodemographic and economic categories that are changing faster in the population. Also, a longitudinal analysis, comparing data from 1987 and 1977, indicates that the mobilities of men and women have followed different paths. The results raise some methodologic challenges: population forecasting at a very disaggregate level and predicting temporal changes in travel behavior.

Abstract:
This paper is about collecting, travel and the geographies of science. At one level it examines the circumstances that led to Isaac Lea's description in Philadelphia of six freshwater mussel shells of the family Unionidae, originally collected by John Kirk during David Livingstone's Zambesi Expedition, 1858–64. At another level it is about how travel is necessary in the making of scientific knowledge. Following these shells from south-eastern Africa to Philadelphia via London elucidates the journeys necessary for Kirk and Lea's scientific work to progress and illustrates that the production of what was held to be malacological knowledge occurred through collaborative endeavours that required the travel of the specimens themselves. Intermediaries in London acted to link the expedition, Kirk's efforts and Lea's classification across three continents and to facilitate the novel description of six species of freshwater mussel. The paper demonstrates the role of travel in the making of mid-nineteenth-century natural history and in developing the relationships and credibility necessary to perform the research on which classifications undertaken elsewhere were based.
