Abstract: The history of spiritismand psychiatry share several common elements and intersections. However, historians have inadequately explored this subject. Particularlyin Brazil, there has been an intense, but littlestudied onflictbetween psychiatristsand spiritistsin regards to "SpiritistMadness"duringthe firsthalfof the twentiethcentury. This present study investigates the construction of the representation of mediumship as madness: the "Spiritist Madness". In other words, how spiritist mediumistic experiences became classified by psychiatrists as a cause andlor manifestation of mental disorders. This study focuses on the place and the time where this conflict was more severe, in the southeast of Brazil, between 1900 to In Brazil, during the first half of the twentieth century, both, psychiatry and spiritism were seeking legitimation, through cultural, scientific, and institutional means within Brazilian society. These two social actors were related to urban, . intellectualized classes, proposing different views and therapeutic approaches to the mind and madness. Both disputed the same space within scientific, cultural, social, and institutional fields, attempting to each establish their own legitimation. This conflictwas expressed through constant quarreJs between psychiatrists and spiritists. Physicians published academic theses, papers, and books about "spiritist madness" and the need to oppose it through governmental control of spiritist groups, forbidding spiritist publications, fighting against charlatanry allegedly practiced by mediums, and hospitalization of mediums, regarded as insane. On the other hand, spiritists also published books, wrote papers in spiritist periodicals, produced a thesis in medicine (that was reproved), and built spiritist psychiatric hospitais. Besides defending against mediumship as a sort of madness, spiritists defended spiritismand criticized psychiatry for its poor clinical effectiveness and for not taking into aecount possible spiritual causes of madness. This struggle was reported by the lay media, and a large number of articles aOOutthis subject were printed in large circulation newspapers. The resolutionof this conflictis related to the achievement of social integration and legitimationby both spiritismand psychiatry, although in differentfields. Psychiatryfound its placa basicallywithinmedicaland academic environments; on the other hand spiritism received its legitimationmainlywithinthe religious field. However, representations of mental disorders' in Braziliansociety have suffered influences from both groups. A large proportionof Brazilians seek spiritual treatments as a complementto psychiatrictherapies. Psychiatricand spiritist representations of mental disorders are ofien understood more as complementaryratherthan opposed. This symOOlicdispute between representations aOOutthe mind, madness and mediumshrp has had rts role rn the constitutron of psychiatry and spiritism as we understand presently in Brazi!.This conflict provided psychiatry with more social visibilityand institutional power to treat mental disorders, and also influenced the Brazilian spiritist movement through rts emphasis on the religrous aspects of charity and spiritual consolation

The research intends to investigate some aspects concerning the conception of history in nineteenth-century Brazilian textbooks by analyzing the works of canon Joaquim Caetano Fernandes Pinheiro (Rio de Janeiro, 1825 – Rio de Janeiro, 1876) – books widely distributed to schools between the early 1860s and the late 1880s. This work aims to point out how Fernandes Pinheiro’s narratives of history presented to the children and young students a historical time for Brazilian Empire by justifying the virtues of the government of the present. Canon Fernandes Pinheiro’s narratives, by organizing dates, facts and the “great men”, compose a writing of history based upon the major role played by religion for the civilization in the tropics (with a temporality sometimes guided by the presence of the Providence in the course of events) – conception that implies the formation of historical time in the projection of a virtuous origin which takes the Imperial present as a continuum, a necessary phase (justified by history) for the moral and political government of the nation

Full textProblem - The future of retirement is an issue that has attracted the attention of governments and private entities worldwide. The period for retirement requires preparation during active professional life so that the resources or assets accrued and added to the Instituto Naacional do Seguro Social and Instituto Adventista de Jubilação e Assistência can be sufficient to meet the costs of living in the period of retirement.
The objective of this work is to awaken the interest in this issue, bring enlightenment and information for those who wish to prepare for retirement and encourage choice a balanced financial position or strengthen the preparation of those who have this advance purpose.
Method - The method used in this action research was quantitative in the 77 questions selected Ministerial Adventist Church Seventh-day Census - South American Division 2012 prepared by sociologist Dr. Thadeu J. Silva Filho at the request of SAD - South American Division. In the second survey questions applied to the shepherds that make up the Mission Para Amapá (MPA), the same quantitative method was used.
The selected data from the first survey provided information that charted an overview of the financial profile of the Adventist pastor and served as the basis for the identification of questions that this work intends to bring clarification. The data from the second survey showed interest, by the pastor, to put in practical financial measures that have been suggested in the seminar "Finance & Balanced Quiet retirement."
Results - Through action research were identified aspects of unpreparedness for retirement for a share of SAD pastors group such as lack of knowledge in finance and own financial profile, the need for external support and tools that facilitate the changing habits. Through research actions it became clear that supplying these aspects can the auxiliary group of pastors prepare quiet mode and satisfactory for retirement.
Conclusion - The final results suggest the possibility of improving the financial literacy of the Adventist pastor, assimilating new habits such as participatory planning the family budget, reshaping the way to spend their resources and restructuring the way to save. Through these measures the financial health of the pastoral family is a tangible reality and expectations for the most promising future.

Abstract: This essay has as its theme the Movimento Universitário Espírita (MUE) of the 1960s and 1970s which acted primarily in the state of São Paulo. It was a trend in the Spiritism that emerged in a time of severe social tensions, proposing a series of theoretical and practical renovations to the Brazilian spiritist movement. Through the examination of the actions of the MUE and the study of the social thinking spiritist, we undertook a historical analysis about the specificity of this movement into spiritist culture: a critical and highly politicized Spiritism, focused on social issues. Such is the character of the MUE, marked by the participation of spiritist college youth who has politicized and thus they began a construction process of synthesis about religion and politics, by proposing a Christian socialism. At the end the MUE, revealing the potential existence of a left wing Spiritism, provoked a backlash from the opposition by the main leaders of the Brazilian Spiritism, thus occasioning its own extinction

Robles, Joaquin G. "Religion and Architecture: Designing a temple of Candomble in Salvador Bahia, Brazil." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34603.
Full textMy thesis aims to create a place of worship for the people of the neighborhood of Plataforma, located in Salvador Bahia, Brazil. Candomble was introduced to Brazil during times of slavery and is the root of Afro-Brazilian culture. In the chaotic world of favelas (Portuguese for slums) the religion of Candomble brings people together and gives order to the community. The neighborhood's current temple also functions as the local priest's home. As an area of low socioeconomic status, Plataforma has been neglected, and so has its temple.
My design seeks to honor the importance of religion in this area of Brazil by using sacred architecture to create a structure that is culturally and religiously sensitive. Construction of the temple mimics the natural architecture of the favelas, and the materials used for the site can be found in the area.
My hope for this project is to work in collaboration with the non-profit organization Axis Mundi, to raise the funds and support necessary to build this temple for the community of Plataforma.

Full textThe afro-Brazilian art results from the miscegenation of african, amerindian and european cultures during the centuries. Several artistic representations of afro-brazilian deities continue to be produced nowadays with innumerable images such as drawings, ritual objects, apparel and sculpture . They are sources of ethnographic and artistic research. Women are present in the afro-Brazilian art in a particular way, mainly in the religious context. Iemanja, a feminine deity occupies an important place in the popular imaginary. She is the orixa of the Sea and All Waters, very popular feminine entity to brazilian people and constantly theme for several artistic expressions and, of course, her representation and iconography are intense and rich. It is important to understand how this image was constructed through time, since the african diaspora - the religious representation in Candomble and Umbanda, her image associated with the myth of the Mermaids, the influence of Catholic iconography until the appropriation of her image by several Brazilian artists such as Emanoel Araújo, Jorge dos Anjos, J. Full textThis research aims to discuss the relevance of religious education in public schools and secular Brazil. At first develops an analysis of the historical-critical trajectory and evolution of religious education in public schools in the country, highlighting especially the relationship Church and State, National Legislation and lines underlying the pedagogical process. In the second chapter we work with João Décio Passos e Afonso Soares, we suggest three models of Religious Education present in Brazil, the Catechism, the Theological and Religious Studies, which examines the proposal to adopt the model of the Sciences of Religion as the best option to sustain pedagogical and epistemological autonomy of religious education in public schools in the country today. Finally, it is argued the need for a more comprehensive model for the study of religious phenomena through the transdisciplinary approach of Edgar Morin and Basarab Nicolescu, aimed at training the students a perspective of wholeness and citizenship, as expressed in Article 33 of LDB No. 9.394/96, with the new wording of Article 33.

Arenari, Brand. "Pentecostalism as religion of periphery." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät III, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/17182.
Full textAll the analyses we have developed throughout this dissertation point to a central element in the emergence and development of Pentecostalism, i.e., its raw material – the promise of religious salvation – is based on the idea of social ascension, particularly the ascension related to the integration of sub-integrated social groups to the dynamics of society. The new religion that arose in the USA focused on the needs and social dramas that were specific of the newly arrived to the urban world of the large North-American cities, those who inhabited the periphery of these cities, those that were socially, economically, and ethnically excluded from the core of society. We also analyzed how the same social drama was the basis for the development of Pentecostalism in Latin America and, especially, in Brazil. In this country, a great mass of excluded individuals, also residents of urban peripheries (which proves the non-traditional and modern characteristic of these sectors), found in Pentecostalism the promises of answers to their dramas, mainly the anxiety to become integrated to a world in which they did not belong before. Such integration was embedded in the promise present in the modernity of social ascension. This scenario leads us to the conclusion that Pentecostalism was a religious discourse capable of taking the main promise of modernity to social groups or classes “forgotten” by modern society. Through a religious discourse, Pentecostalism fulfilled the notions of social mobility, and its consequent idea of individual ascension to the mass of people not yet fully integrated to the modern world, but living in it. Following, it became the Christian religion of blacks and mestizos, of the poor and all the others who felt out of place in that world. So the Pentecostalism became a religion of periphery par excellence.

Full textThis research aims at identifying and analyzing the presence of religiosity in public schools through observing diffuse strategies and mechanisms. The hypothesis that we worked with was that religiosity is present in Brazilian public scholar institutions in a veiled and naturalized way. In order to contextualize the religiosity in a public space, it was made necessary to note this phenomenon in the Brazilian society and how its individuals realize their religiosity(ies). In order to reach our objectives, a case study was done in a municipal public school in Santo André city (São Paulo). Using many methodological resources inspired in the ethnographic methodology and built from the notion of scholar culture (FORQUIN, 1993), the profiles of two teachers were elaborated targeting their teaching practice. In the direction of categorizing the teaching practice, we used the notion of belief (BOURDIEU, 2001). The first conclusion was that the configuration of individuals beliefs establishes the teaching practice, including religious beliefs, due to an absence of control or limits of these practices. Consequently, the religiosity is not only present in teaching practice, but also it influences the childrens process of socialization. The last conclusion was that the presence of religiosity in public schools is verified in a hidden way, because without sociological tools it looks as if it was absent. Indeed, this invisibility is what legitimizes and maintains the religiosity in public schools.

The purpose of this research is to reflect on the shifting ritual, different expressions such as gestures, silence, clothing characterized, objects, banners and sounds that are moving the close relations between the pilgrim (devout and/or curious) and the saint. To make this reflection based we decided to depart from a field research for five days, along with visitors, devotees promisers, trying to gather free and spontaneous information, adding to the bibliography, dealing with myth, ritual and symbols used by the walker in the procession of St. Lucy. The objective is to point the name of the various expressions of religious feast of the Patron Saint; to emphasize the importance of the rites as itinerant religious phenomenon in a secularizing society, reflecting the open air rite from a close relationship between the believer and the divine; to understand syncretism and the notion of sacred, using the methodology of participant observation on the feast of St. Lucy in Mossoró (RN)

Full textThe military coup of 1964 indicated a genuine political retreat in the movement for a just and fraternal society, because it established a dictatorial and antidemocratic regime. Protestant groups began to support it. In doing so they were embracing a denial of democratic and christian values, since these very churches, by defending the theory of protestant ideology, based on liberty and free will, became themselves authoritarian and repressive, treating those opposed to the new regime as enemies without the due process of law. The March of the Family with God for Freedom, in Recife, meant that the support of protestant and catholic religious groups for the military coup of 1964, were actually threatening the preservation of christian and democratic values. People in leadership of protestant and catholic churches joined against a common enemy: communism. In this context we study the Crusade of Christian Basic Action (Cruzada ABC), a protestant educational movement of youths and adults, sustained by an agreement among USAID, the Colégio Agnes Erskine of Recife, and SUDENE, which alleged to be philanthropic. We emphasize the religious content and proselytism of the Cruzada ABC, inspired by the social values of the United States

Abstract: The thesis proposes a cultural history of the children's evangelical media produced in Brazil between the 1950s and 2000s. We defend the idea that the use of media was an important factor for the constitution of a post-modern Brazilian evangelical culture, directed towards the individual consumption and daily issues. The theme of the family and the infancy has fomented an intense circulation of evangelical cultural goods through the media, which allows the construction of a transdenominational religiosity. One consolidates a mediatic evangelical culture that mingles traditional Christian messages with contemporary formats available in an evangelical cultural supermarket. We focus on the discourses and the strategies of evangelical media producers in order to analyse the representations on Christian childhood. Besides, we analyse the reception of these products to identify their uses and meanings in the daily life

Our objective in this research is to inquire into studies that dialogue with Paul Tillich in Brazil in the last years, seeking to map their tendency, departing from religion. In order to do this, it was necessary to verify the scientific production done in Paul Tillich Association of Brazil, through Correlatio journal, considering the theoretical referential on religion and boundary. We have used these themes, religion and boundary, the meanings of which were taken from Tillich s own theory, as the main categories of analysis in our work. We have indicated the contribution that Brazilian researchers who are interested in Tillich s ideas have presented to Religious Studies. Besides, we have observed specially that Tillich s thought is in a boundary situation in Brazil between what he has said and the way he is interpreted in this country, where religion in a narrow sense concerns scholars much more than religion in a broad sense. This dissertation is structured in three moments: number one, showing how the boundary can be seen as a hermeneutical place for religion; number two, presenting some openings with which Tillich deals with religion subject, number three, analyzing studies in dialogue with Tillich in Brazil, through the categories religion and boundary.(AU)

Full textThis paper describes the Sosen Suuhai, which is a ritual of the Okinawans ancestors. It seeks to understand its meanings in the construction of the identity of Okinawans in Brazil. In order to achieve this, the interviews and the field data were analyzed from two perspectives: 1. A historical one, which examines the relations among the Okinawans and the government and the Brazilian society in the Vargas Era, especially during the Estado Novo. The process of identity affirmation of Okinawans in Brazil and the extension of the Sosen Suuhai, especially since the arrival of new immigrants in the postwar period, was discussed. 2. An analysis of the Sosen Suuhai focused on animism and shamanism. It was perceived that the symbolism of the body (blood and semen) appears concatenated to the perception of sacred and profane within the Sosen Suuhai, which have repercussions on the social distinction, like gender dichotomy. One can say that this symbolism is reflected in the importance of the patrilineality in the butsudan succession, and the importance of women in communication, in a religious sense, as in the perpetuation of tradition and family memory. It was also noted that the Okinawan belonging, moved by worship, operates from two points of view: the religion and history. In some families, the butsudan signifies communication with the ancestors and beliefs in their power of influence on family life. In other families, however, the butsudan would be seen more as a \"place of memory\" reverence for ancestors history, which highlights the specificities in Okinawan immigration process to Brazil. This strong presence of historicity in the speeches of speakers is related to the construction of an Okinawan identity in Brazil that seeks to exalt their expansion and joy characteristics as opposed to the reticent and coldness features of the Japanese. These differences, built in the discourse identity, were read within the \"culture\" in which habits and native customs become triggered as a statement of group strategy and recognition whitin the society

Full textThe study of religiosity and of religion in the feast is crucial to the understanding of myth, ritual and symbols inserted in devotion and promise to the saint, taking as inspiration the focus point of the rituals, especially the ritual procession, or even touring runs through the twenty-first century, even at such desecration.

Their popularity intrigued the Inquisition and their agents had called them bolsa de mandinga, and the people who made them mandingueiros, interpreting those practices as manifestations of sorcery. This research tries to analyze the bolsas de mandinga utilized in the Atlantic societies as a result of the recreation of African traditions in the world of slavery and circulation of knowledge related to Africans from different origins, based in a Bantu culture associated with Christianity.

Abstract: The Rosary brotherhoods in Bahia, from the first foundations in the middle of the XVIIIth century to the end of the XIXth century, were mostly controlled by Africans from Angola and their Creole partners. That shows a valuation of this place by the Angolans more than any other African group. The identification with Catholic brotherhoods points to the importance of Catholicism in Central Africa and, at the same time, reveals this characteristic as a fundamental one in the constitution of a particular identity inside the slave community and Bahian society in general. This dissertation discusses, also, this identification in the slave experience in the Portuguese kingdom, and suggests a singular perspective for the historical investigation of the Rosary devotion, the black brotherhoods and the Angolan identity during the XVIIIth century, over three continents

Full textThis work aims to examine how the Brazilian film Batismo de Sangue (2006), directed by Helvécio Ratton, contributes to resume and to expand the memory of the opposition to military dictatorship exercised by the Dominican Friars of the Perdizes Monastery, in Sao Paulo (Brazil) in the 60\'s and in the 70\'s. For that, the goal is to explain the role of the so-called friars preachers during this period, showing how they got involved with the Communist leader Carlos Marighella (1911-1969), founder of the Ação Libertadora Nacional (ALN). Before proceeding with the movie analysis and discussing the conditions under which it was produced, some chapters will be devoted to describing the history of the Order of Dominicans as well as the clash between the conservative and the progressive wings of the Brazilian Catholic Church during the twentieth century. There will also be the biography of Carlos Marighella. The analysis of the film Batismo de Sangue is the subject of the second part of this study.

Starting from an anthropological perspective, this thesis deals with the relationship between football and religion in Brazil. In particular, it aims to understand a practice adopted by Brazilian footballers, which is called ‘fechamento’. This term refers to the set of verbal and bodily expressions that footballers systematically display before competitions, which differs from similar practices used for the collective recitation of the Lord’s Prayer. From a symbolic point of view, hermeneutics of ‘fechamento’ allows us to acquire an understanding that transcends the object per se, thus revealing a particular world view (Geertz, 1989). Starting from an ethnography carried out with the players of the youth team of Sport Club Internacional de Porto Alegre, Brazil and integrated with the experience gained by the researcher during his long stay in Brazil, this thesis aims to reveal the deep meaning of this polymorphic practice which, because of its intrinsic features, appears to be a ‘religious bricolage’, made up of ‘pieces’ of various elements of different beliefs, thus forming a ‘mosaic’ (Bastide, 1953-1970), for which the Catholic-Christian root represents the backdrop Starting from this perspective, it becomes possible to relativise the impact of Neo- Pentecostalism on Brazilian football (Rial, 2012; 2013), by taking into consideration its “religiophagous” (Oro, 2015) or “anthropophagous” (Almeida, 2003) feature, i.e. the tendency to incorporate, redefine and re-symbolise elements of beliefs taken from other religions. The case of ‘fechamento’, among Brazilian footballers, seems to be emblematic of this process which, instead of revealing its Neo-Pentecostal ‘face’, strengthens even more the already high degree of ‘religious bricolage’. Therefore ‘fechamento’ as a ‘syncretic’ product would no longer be based on one religion (Neo-Pentecostalism) but on all. This would explain its success regardless of the religious orientation of players.

Full textThe religious endogamy is a social institution historically well established in the Presbyterian tradition. However, an important part of church members get involved emotionally, dating and marrying people outside of approved religious group. This study researched how was the spread, maintenance and social legitimacy of endogamy concept in the Brazilian Presbyterianism, since the missionary Presbyterianism introduction in the country, trying to understand how religious endogamy has been justified in brazilians social and religious plurality. This study is specially importante nowadays, qhen some people believe that religious institutions legitimacy determine behavior patterns is getting out of use. Comparative studies on endogamy among immigrant populations, the history of endogamous precept in Christianity, the analysis of biblical texts that underlie endogamy and a field survey among attendees at a Presbyterian community on São Paulo, Brazil, contributed to the understanding of the issue from the point of view of the institution and from the perspective of its faithful ones.

Full textThis dissertation had as its main objective to understand which elements guided projects and practices of womens prisons in Brazil in the late 30s and early 40s. It sought to verify the extent to which criminological prescriptions, as the ones from Classical Criminal Law that said that penalties served to purge guilt and that crime was an individuals choice and from Criminal Anthropology for whom the Man was born as a delinquent and penalty should be a medical measure to cure law offenders were present in the understanding of female crime and the daily life of these institutions. By reading documents from that period, among them journals such as A Estrela and Arquivos Penitenciários do Brasil, it was possible to rebuild arguments and goals that were used to justify the foundation of womens prisons in the country, as well as identify for whom they were built for. It concludes that womens prison system were built in a very peculiar way, mixing components from the two above-mentioned criminological schools with religious and morals elements, aiming to give back to society good mothers and wives, that is, women free from the vices and illness that moved them away from their expected paths. In that sense, female criminality, seen as a deviation from the social role that women were supposed to perform, should be contained and corrected. That explains why a religious Congregation was responsible for running the first womens prisons in Brazil, which privileged the recovery of elements valued as attached to the feminine.

This text presents as search object evangelic communities located in Carapicuiba, with the aim to find elements among them that represents, manifest or rebuild African native religion matrix religiosity. To achieve this goal observational and active engagement on meetings and interviews with two Christian religious leaders and Candomble obedentiary were performed. Historical and religious texts were also employed. In this research the African native religion matrix influence was confirmed, not only, as initially supposed by the Candomble touch points, but also with Afro-catholic traditions, as of mystical prayers like "benzimento" (blessing), and popular belives on "simpatias" (spells). Also noticed, the creation and development of these churches, teology and peculiar cosmovision from Reformed as from Pentecostals tends to answer africanbrazilian from diaspora religious yearnings, which re-create, in the middle of oppression, their ancestral culture. The presented text opens up a window to understand how afro-brazilian religiosity has been developing around the growing Christian traditions in Brazil; how the black people from diaspora search, in a certain way, to belong to the captive land, even after 130 years later from abolition. Keywords: Teology; Religiosity; Black people

Full textOver the last decades it has been noticed a huge investment in Psychology expressed as an interest for Psychology as secular profession as well as in the application of psychological knowledge in ecclesiastical activities. Another fact specially verified among evangelicals is the demand for being attended by a psychotherapist who professes the same faith. Since 1990's the evangelical investment in Psychology has increased visibly and raised up various conflicts between evangelical psychologists and professional regulatory bodies, mainly Conselho Federal de Psicologia, concerning the articulation between evangelical faith and practice in Psychology, especially in psychotherapy. Evangelicals are the most growing religious group in Brazil during the last decades, presenting not only a quantitative expansion, but above all a remarkable presence in Brazilian social scene. The articulations between Religion and Science are intensively observed in History of Psychology in Brazil since the colonial age, in which an important circulation of Catholic writings with psychological thematic ("psychology of the soul") took place until the mid 20th century when Psychology was introduced in Catholic seminaries to support the priests' formation. Although religious thematic has a great importance in psychosocial issues, it can be noticed a gap in the field of Psychology when it comes to religion studies (especially in a historical-social perspective). Therefore, it is necessary to reflect about the senses of the appropriation of psychological speech that is made by the evangelicals. Our empirical investigation has been achieved in two stages: a) it was applied an electronic questionnaire in 104 Evangelical psychologists in order to obtain information on their professional formation and practice, besides their personal perspective about the relation between their religious belief and professional practice; b) 5 participants of this group were selected to be interviewed in order to deepen the investigation on certain themes which arose from questionnaire's analysis. Our results mostly point to a multiplicity of speeches about the influence of evangelical faith on professional practice. Between those who report the total influence of religiousness and those who claim a strict neutrality, there is an spectrum with diverse ambivalent positions that in general indicates an indissociability between a vision of world influenced by religion and the professional practice at the same time that they point out the ethical need of suspension of judgment so that the therapist's religiousness won't interfere the client. These results point the existence of a common nucleus between the discursive systems of both Psychology and the Evangelical religion that produces the interest for appropriation of psychological knowledge and practice in this religious group. The analysis of these relations is fundamental to the current ethical debates among the category of psychologists concerning the intersection between religion and professional practice.

Abstract: This research aims to present and discuss various forms of occupation and the political uses of Amazon territories in the twentieth century, highlighting the Amazon in Mato Grosso - the Araguaia valley. Therefore, from the perspective of Cultural History, the set of discourses that constitute the documentary sources reveals the strategies of action with which the various social agents operate their purposes. In different games of interest, dimensions of public and private are intertwined, as well as the general and the particular, the formal and the informal, ethics and aesthetics. In this way, research results show the various individual and collective behaviors that produce meetings and disagreements, partners and adversaries, allies and enemies, from the conception that social groups formulate about the world they live in and, with them, build their life experiences. In the second half of the last century, the "inventory" of the Amazon spaces for economic exploitation purposes, which is established from government policies, originated many land conflicts on the basis of "land deals" that turned into land use. In these practices of violence, Catholic Church, entrepreneurs, government (Executive, Legislative and Judicial), social representations such as syndicate, CNBB, NGOs, OAB, etc., faced (and have been facing). And it has drawn the attention of journalists and intellectuals. Finally, research on the whole indicates the unique aspects of a historical time laden with representations of modernity, whose actions put values and traditions to the test. The forms of action, therefore, give meaning to the choices, political-economic and socio-cultural behaviors, victories and even failures with which the region's people (Indians, riverine, poor farmers and immigrants) build their life experiences in dimension and frames of progress
