Abstract:
When Brazil’s then-president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was implicated in a bribery scandal in 2005, Senator Antônio Carlos Magalhães from the state of Bahia emerged as one of the president’s most vocal critics. This study relied on a content analysis of scandal coverage in two competing Bahia newspapers: A Tarde, which had no overt political ties, and Correio da Bahia, which Sen. Magalhães owned. Results showed that Magalhães’s newspaper, Correio da Bahia, excluded citizens’ voices and covered Sen. Magalhães more extensively and favorably than did the competing newspaper, A Tarde. Thus, Correio da Bahia succumbed to owner influence, potentially threatening democracy by allowing Magalhães to set the newspaper’s agenda.

Abstract:
Given the crucial role of the mass media in influencing public discourse, this study examines the discourses around climate change within the Brazilian press, covering the time period of 2003–2013. Survey evidence has shown that Brazilians’ degree of concern about climate change is higher than almost anywhere else, with nine out of 10 Brazilians considering climate change a serious problem. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate how the press engendered Brazilians’ striking level of climate change concern, with special attention to how the discourse developed over time. To this end, I undertake a corpus-assisted discourse analysis to examine the most dominant linguistic patterns in the discourse, presenting evidence on an unprecedented scale and with considerable depth. The corpus consists of 19,686 newspaper texts (11.4 million words) published by 12 Brazilian broadsheet papers. The results are interpreted in the light of available opinion polls on the public’s perception of climate change as well as Brazil’s national context and environmental governance.

Abstract:
In July 2020, a group of illustrators were contacted so we could hear if their views on remote work and professional collaboration had changed, in light of the covid-19 pandemic scenario. These illustrators participated in a previous research conducted with Brazilian newspaper illustrators between 2016-2018. The main research objective was to understand how illustrators were fitting in newspaper's routines and production, considering the multiplatform publishing trend led by the rise in mobile and digital readership. As it was observed then, illustrators were already used to working remotely. The investigation focused in assessing how these professionals viewed the pros and cons of face-to-face working way compared to working remotely. Also their views on the interaction with other fields’ professionals, in projects involving Illustration & Design were considered. Illustrators of Brazilian newspapers answered a query and an interview with open questions. Although the original research had not been motivated by a pandemic scene, we believe that by renewing the subject with new data collected in 2020, the study can contribute to the ongoing broader discussions over reorganizing workflows for remote work, especially those involving designers and projects with multidisciplinary teams. This paper aims at presenting and discussing qualitative data regarding these issues.

Abstract:
The crônica is a literary genre that became widespread in Brazilian newspapers and magazines pages in the 19th century. These short pieces were responsible for the circulation and insertion of foreign writers in the Brazilian cultural system, such as the Italian writer Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837). The present article analyses, based on Cultural Translation Theory (Burke/Hsia 2009), how Leopardi was represented in Brazilian crônicas published between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, specifically from 1881 to 1916, and available at the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Archive. The analysis of 12 crônicas shows that they were written predominantly by men, and published in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo; these cronistas tend to show Leopardi as poet, “translating” and resignifying his “patriotism”, and, mainly, his “pessimist philosophy”, following sectors of the Italian criticism of the time. Furthermore, they exert a double function in the process of cultural translation, filling in thematic gaps and spreading Leopardi’s works.

Abstract:
Transoceanic passage brought nearly 189,000 immigrants from Japan to Brazil between 1908 and 1941. They were often geographically isolated in Japanese “colonies” as coffee plantation workers and thus able to maintain their Japanese linguistic and cultural identity. A new imagined community coalesced in the several Japanese-language immigrant newspapers that also published locally produced serial fiction. This paper reads two representative works by Sugi Takeo, pen name of Takei Makoto (1909-2011), who was a prolific contributor of original content to the Burajiru Jihô newspaper. In the short stories, “Kafé-en o uru” (Selling the coffee plantation, 1933) and “Tera Roshya” (Terra rossa, 1937), it is the moonshine sellers who see steady profits from every race and type of immigrant laborer while the Japanese newcomers who naively dream of riches by bringing coffee to market reap only a bitter brew of poverty for their efforts.

Abstract:
A content analysis of the press in a middle-sized city in Brazil finds that the news agenda and local scope of the tabloid dailies are oriented to the working classes. Working-class-oriented tabloids tend to be the strongest ideological supporters of capitalist legitimacy and continued elite control in the midst of rapid industrialization and newspaper competition in the provincial capital of Curitiba. More serious papers oriented toward the middle classes tend to allow for less hegemonic points of view in the period after the end of the military dictatorship. Ideology variables are shown to be empirically powerful, second only to agenda-setting in explaining run-of-the-paper news content and second only to news values in predicting the most prominent news content for all sampled papers. Stories with dominant ideological themes are played prominently in all newspapers and, in addition, are run more frequently throughout the tabloids.

Abstract:
Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), the renowned polymath in Brazilian literature and culture, has an immensely rich trajectory as a journalist. Comprising articles, chronicles, essays, poems, short stories and novel excerpts, his journalistic production revolves around São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in the wider press and in specialized periodicals; it does not spurn tabloids and branches out into occasional contributions to newspapers of other Brazilian cities. His journalistic production may be found in every journal of our Modernism; it takes up sections and columns, and also flourishes in newspaper series. His death on February 25, 1945, however, brought all this to an end. In the present essay – part of a longer one about the chronicles related to the creationof Paulicea Desvairada [Hallucinated City], in 1920-1921, I intend to focus on the strategies designed by those who aimed at celebrating the centenary of the Brazilian Independence, in 1922, endowing São Paulo Capital with a landmark of Modernism, the Monumento às Bandeiras, by sculptor Victor Brecheret. This goal is fostered by Mário de Andrade’s journalistic texts, and they have been preserved in the archive as well asin the library that he organized.

Abstract:
This research examines identity work vis-à-vis Brazilian discourse regarding the events of September 11, 2001. The data is drawn from Brazilian nationals and expatriates participating in a digital discourse forum hosted by the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. In discussing the events of 9/11/01, Brazilians also make sense of what it means to be Brazilian and what it means to be human. As the data show, Brazilians frame their reactions by drawing on larger understandings of the social world. The two most dominant stances come from Brazilians adopting what can be called Arielist and cosmopolitan stances. In addition, a small group of Brazilian expatriates join the fray as self-proclaimed Americanophiles. In examining these dynamics, we see that identities result from the process of identity construction best framed from a social constructionist perspective. In these three cases, identities emerge from interaction, engagement, and reaction to competing identity frames. Through the ongoing dialogue interactions, Brazilian participants implicitly make statements about their self-conceptions and visions of Brazil’s place in the world during this historic event. Significantly, the complementary and oppositional stances in reaction to 9/11/01 continue to persist almost twenty years after the attacks in the ideological frameworks around national identities circulating in both Brazil and the U.S. at present. In this way, the discourse from 2001 foreshadows the impending political chasm between right and left in both Brazil and the United States and provides an impetus for future research.

Abstract Maps in newspapers generated many discussions among cartographers and geographers working from different approaches and theoretical backgrounds. This work examines these maps from a historiographical as well as a historical perspective. It considers three main questions, namely how maps in the press should be conceptualized, how cartographic images in newspapers have been studied, and how these images changed over time. In order to provide a perspective on the origins, development, and impact of war maps in the press, this work will explore maps representing three geopolitical conflicts for Brazilian audiences: The War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), World War II (1939–1945) and the War on Drugs in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas (1994–2010). By exploring these war maps, specific cartographic practices used in this genre as well as the connections that this mode has with other types of map production and consumption will be identified.

Analyzing Brazilian newspapers' climate coverage leading up to 2010, this article shows that climate change was framed as an energy problem although energy is a small part of the country’s emissions compared to emissions from land use change and agriculture. While meat production is the single largest cause of national emissions, discussions of meat as a problem in the context of climate change were marginal, at best. To the extent that the topic of meat appeared, it was underdeveloped and approached in ways that reduced attention, concern, and agency on the part of Brazilians to steer the country towards a new, more sustainable development path. This paper presents these findings and offers a preliminary political economic explanation for its existence.

Abstract:
Due to the growing number of immigrants in the United States, made up principally of Latinos, Asians and Africans, there has been a growing demand for products that are popular in their countries of origin. In order to meet this demand, there has been a tremendous increase in imports of agricultural products to the United States. Cassava is a good example. Imports of cassava to the US have increased 370% in the last six years. The University of Massachusetts began to evaluate vegetable crops popular among Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in 1996, and in 2002 began to evaluate crops popular among the large and growing Brazilian population in the state and region. This paper summarizes results of research on crops popular with Brazilian immigrants in the US, in addition to the evaluation of the marketing chain and impact of media outlets to promote and sell these crops. Surveys of Brazilian customers in target markets demonstrated that the majority of Brazilian immigrants in the Northeastern United States are from the state of Minas Gerais. Due to this fact, the crops chosen for research in Massachusetts were ones that were popular in this state: jiló, maxixe, taioba, abóbora and okra. In order to successfully introduce these crops into the marketplace it is critical to devote resources to promotion and marketing. In spite of their popularity among Brazilians, these vegetable crops are not normally found in the market so it is necessary to let the community know that they are available and in what locations. The most effective media outlet evaluated in this work to reach Brazilians was the television station Rede Globo International, available in the United States; however, other avenues evaluated to promote this project to Brazilians, such as Brazilian newspapers and radio programs, were also effective and less expensive. The opportunity to export agricultural products to the United States is a growing opportunity for farmers in Brazil. In order to gain access to this market it is important to understand the distribution system used for fresh produce in the United States.

Abstract:
This article compares editorial and news agendas considering O Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S. Paulo, and O Globo newspapers during the second round of the 2018 Brazilian presidential election. We study to what extent the convergence between both agendas discloses some of the political interests sponsored by news organizations. By using content analysis, we examined the thematic convergence between 144 editorials and news. The hypotheses are: H1) The news and opinion sections within each newspaper converge thematically, indicating a political instrumentalization of the journalistic practices; H2) Newspapers differ from each other when considering the topics covered in their editorials, which is not the case when their main cover stories are at stake. The results indicate that the newspapers do not present a strong convergence within their intern sections. However, there is similarity between the opinionated agenda between the news organizations, which doesn’t happen with the news coverage.O objetivo deste trabalho é comparar as agendas editorial e noticiosa dos jornais O Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo e O Globo durante o segundo turno da eleição presidencial de 2018.
Using newspapers as primary sources, this article presents an innovative analysis of Victor Meirelles’ A primeira missa no Brasil (1860). Beyond canonical interpretations of Meirelles’ work as an erudite depiction of the beginning of Brazil’s history in 1500, the article demonstrates that for viewers of that time the painting also, and above all, represented the beginning of the history of Brazilian art in the 1800s. It demonstrates this by following general art debates in newspapers of the period, specifically in the years before and after the highly anticipated return of the young Meirelles from his European sabbatical. Debates in the press illustrate how Meirelles’ significance for nineteenth-century audiences in particular, and for Brazilian art history as whole, can only be fully decoded by situating the artist within Brazilian elites’ political-intellectual efforts to achieve European-style civilisational progress during the first decades of the post-independence period.

Abstract:
Abstract Freedom of Expression is becoming a theme of growing importance and visibility in Brazil. Newspapers report daily legal suits against “hate speech” concerning race and religious discrimination. Many courts are also imposing high compensation damages that are challenging the “right to ridicule” in comedy shows and newspapers cartoons. The Brazilian public opinion in general tends to be sympathetic to more restrictive rules that may threaten freedom of expression in Brazil. There is nowadays in Brazil an unexpected agreement among the right wing, religious groups, and many human rights movements that support a European model of free speech. In many ways, the “Brazilian Model” based on balancing doctrine and a vague conceptualization of Human Dignity gives a lot of discretion for courts to decide the limits of freedom of expression. Court decisions based on balancing rhetoric is becoming dominant in Brazilian Constitutional court and usually try to avoid some epistemological issues concerning objectivity and moral justification. This article advocates that Brazilian interpretation of freedom expression has a lot to learn from the US model and doctrine. The US more strict and conceptual jurisprudence on this issue offers a powerful and democratic alternative to the balancing model and represents a rich conceptual analysis still unknown by Brazilian courts.

ABSTRACT. Historically, the earthquake studies was based on reports and records of newspapers, which referred to the estimation of the measure of the intensity of events. The advance of seismological instrumentation improved the calculation of magnitudes of earthquakes, which became a priority measure, to the detriment of intensity estimates. With the growth of access to information and communication technologies, the volume of relevant information for intensity estimation has become feasible and representative. We present the Brazilian Macroseismic Intensity Map between the years of 2006 to 2017, based on records of digital newspapers and blogs, and compare with the map of magnitudes recorded by the Brasília Seismological Observatory in the same period. The Brazilian Macroseismic Intensity Map contributes to the improvement of the Seismic Hazard Map. The results show the importance of preserving the information of seismic events published in digital media. Keywords: Macroseism, seismicity, intensity, digital newspapers, Brazilian Macroseismic Intensity Map.RESUMO. The results demonstrated that the Brazilian population uses Twitter to manifest their political view, expressing both positive and negative sentiments regarding political events. This kind of characterization may contribute to build a critical opinion of Brazilian people, once they would not be limited by what is being divulgated by typical media, such as television and newspapers. Additionally, the authors reinforced the applicability of social media, as Twitter, to make this kind of characterization.

Abstract:
In March 1855, a literary newspaper in Rio de Janeiro printed the first installment of Nísia Floresta's “Páginas de uma vida obscura,” a serialized short story inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe'sUncle Tom's Cabin(1852). Seven more chapters followed, keeping “Páginas” in the public eye for months. TheJornal do Commercio, arguably the national paper of record, mentioned the story in its announcements. Floresta (pseudonym of Dionísia Gonçalves Pinto, 1810–1885) centered her storyline on the Congo-born Domingos, the “Brazilian Tom,” who exemplified the attributes of Christian virtuosity and resignation found in Stowe's internationally famous novel. Set in the nineteenth century, “Páginas” begins with the ten-year-old Domingos's enslavement on the African coast, and highlights the human devastation of the internal slave trade through his movements across Minas Gerais and on to Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro. It ends with Domingos's death, at age 54, grief-stricken over his son's recent passing. In part, Floresta's “Páginas” emerged from the Brazilian schoolteacher's longstanding critiques of patriarchy, nation, and education. Twenty years earlier, Floresta had drawn from Mary Wollstonecraft'sA Vindication of the Rights of Womanto writeDireito das mulheres e injustiça dos homens(1832), a book that went through three editions in its first decade. More directly though, Floresta had connected to the so-called “Tom mania” while living in Paris in 1852. The following year, back in Rio, she wrote a pamphlet on women's education—Opúsculo humanitário(1853)—that parsed key aspects ofUncle Tom's Cabin, among a larger discussion of women's achievements internationally. Two Rio newspapers excerpted the pamphlet, and, boldly, published the chapters focused on Uncle Tom. This attention in the press raised the profile of a book the public already knew to be controversial, as newspapers had earlier carried reports of port authorities seizing shipments ofUncle Tom's Cabinin Rio, Salvador, and Fortaleza. In writing “Páginas,” then, two years after theOpúsculo, Floresta not only carried forward her literary dialogue with Stowe, but also posed the work as a challenge to the status quo. “Páginas” was necessary, she explained, because “slavery is not an issue of concern in the press.” If overstated, given that the topic of slavery was quite prevalent in public discourse, Floresta's assertion nonetheless signals an opportunity for scholars to probe further into the relationship between slavery and the public sphere in the mid nineteenth century. More specifically, it suggests connections to be explored between the press and the early reception ofUncle Tom's Cabinin Brazil, and, more broadly, connections between the representations of slavery in the press, and the institution's enduring legitimacy.

Abstract:
The student movements which took place worldwide during 1968 had a considerable impact in Brazil, where they emerged as one of the social groups at the forefront of civic resistance to the dictatorship and modernisation of the university system. This article discusses the representations of Brazilian students in action, constructed and disseminated in the public sphere by the daily press. Particular attention is paid to (1) the motives, demands and aspirations of the activist student youth, (2) their capacity for social mobilisation, integration of alternative political figures and negotiation with the State, (3) the places, times and intensities of their actions, and (4) the narratives constructed by the daily newspapers on the basis of the testimonies, opinions and interests of the journalists, the protagonists of the movement and the rest of the social actors involved in the student issues of the day. The period of time selected for examination runs from the Seventh-Day Mass (marking the end of the events surrounding the death of Edson Luís de Lima Souto at the Calabouço Restaurant), and the Passeata dos Cem Mil (March of the One Hundred Thousand), which can be considered the turning point in the events which led to the passing of AI-5 – the repressive military executive order. The main source used for this study is the newspaper Correio do Povo, representative of the liberal-conservative sectors in southern Brazil.

Palavras-chave: Dislexia do Desenvolvimento; Matérias Jornalísticas; Informação. Developmental Dyslexia in the news: an analysis of newspaper articles about the disorder published in the three largest Brazilian newspapers between 2010 and 2017ABSTRACTThis study is an analysis of sixteen newspaper articles about dyslexia published in the three main Brazilian newspapers between 2010 and 2017, in order to verify how the press tends to approach the disorder and, consequently, what type of information is at the readers’ disposal. This research also aimed at investigating if the content conveyed by the sixteen articles is potentially capable of providing readers with awareness of important aspects of dyslexia, thus spreading information about the disorder in a responsible way. This work is based on the premise according to which providing the population with information on dyslexia is pivotal for enabling the school community (teachers, students and parents) to face the problem. The theoretical framework includes contributions by Behan (2001), Benton (1980) and Johnson & Myklebust (1983), among others. The content of the newspaper articles by O Globo, Folha de São Paulo and O Estadão was then set against the theoretical framework. It is, therefore, a bibliographic review applied in an evaluation of the accuracy and relevance of the articles’ content. The results point that, despite some mismatching and negative aspects, most of the articles present potential contribution for raising readers’ awareness of issues related to the disorder. Keywords: Developmental Dyslexia; Newspaper Articles; Information. This contribution discusses the early years of Italian immigration in the uplands of southern Brazil, known as the Serra Gaucha (1875–1915). Tracing back early agrarian practices and deforestation techniques of the early settlement years, we investigate the consolidation of this human group in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. In addition, analysing the development of both wood logging and winemaking industries in the region, the essay frames the identitarian construction of this social group, looking at the intersection between cultural traditions from the homeland, socioeconomic drives and local environmental factors. This analysis builds upon primary sources from both Brazilian and Italian institutions, local newspapers, and scholarly publications on environmental history, as well as Brazilian and Italian migration history.

In this paper I set out from Brazilian social theories on race to analyse a contemporary corpus of news reports in a Brazilian broadsheet newspaper. The aim is investigating change in mediated discourses on race. Based on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and with the help of corpus linguistics methodological tools I focus on lexical items used to categorise race, the semantic relations created and their association with discourse representation in the newspaper. The combined analysis of semantic relations and interdiscursivity has allowed for the perception of tensions over the use of terms from different semantic fields to categorize race and of conflicting discourses of race classification in the paper. The analysis has also allowed for a cautious interpretation of dialogicality and of different orientations to racial difference, following the social research inventories in Fairclough (2003) in the reports.

Abstract:
In order to update the debate about journalism and agenda-setting, the article examines the main issues discussed by Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo in their editorials. By using Content Analysis, we analyze 164 texts published by both newspapers between 2011 and 2013. All editorials in our sample mention the terms “Brazilian Congress”, “Senate” or “Brazilian House of Representatives”. Our results point that, among the issues considered of relevance by the newspapers, there are relations between the government and its allies in Congress and political scandals; other issues of social interest were also addressed by the editorials, such as labor legislation and the quality of education and health services. The fact that editorial is an institutional genre gives a special relevance to the agendas adopted by it. The diverse emphases verified in OESP and FSP editorials also highlight that journalistic institutions have their own interests. Therefore, it is necessary that the literature deepens the debate about “editorialized criteria”, aiming to understand to which extent journalistic companies not only set some agendas as those that are more important, but also highlight particular political perspectives.

Abstract:
This work investigates how Afro-migrants are represented within a Brazilian and a South African tabloid in terms of race and ethnicity. It also employs scorpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to analyse verbal language. Results suggest that the two newspapers represent black migrants in the light of criminality, either as victims or perpetrators. They often place migrants as beneficiaries of charity, especially in the Brazilian case, and more as perpetrators in the South African case. Passivization of migrants is noticeable in both tabloids; however, the Brazilian outlet resorts mostly to reported speech and editing of the migrants’ voices while the South African offers them either freer speech or silencing. Ultimately, Afro-Latin philosophical principles such as self-determination and empathetic zeal are often times neglected across many depictions.

In 1927, he travelled to the Amazon together with three female friends. During this trip, he published a series of articles in a national newspaper, wrote two diaries, collected notes and finished his most important book, Macunaima, considered the reference of Brazilian Modernism. In addition to that, he took more than 500 photos of the journey, most of them in a very modern perspective. This work aims to present a typology of uses of social media by Brazilian traditional newspapers, by analyzing their journalistic content. The research observed 9,993 posts from nine regional newspapers on their Facebook fan pages. We use a quantitative approach through a content analysis of the posts about news collected. Due to the migration to a digital version, many newspapers have used social media as tools for spreading journalistic content. However, the strategies to occupy these spaces are diverse and the enterprises evoke different themes to call the public’s attention, which allows the creation of a typology of different uses of social media. The results show five different profiles of journalistic content on newspapers’ social media, which vary from politicized fan pages to those focused almost exclusively on entertainment. ABSTRACT Brazil represents approximately 29% of the world’s coffee exports, with 15% of that being "specialty coffee." Most Brazilian coffee exports are composed of commoditized green beans, influencing the value chain to be grounded on an exchange paradigm. This scenario started to change with the introduction of specialized coffee shops, coffee capsules for home consumption, and demand for a more artisanal product. A paradigm of value creation along the chain drives production processes that aim to differentiate products through superior coffee beans and unique experiences. This study was developed through content analysis of 15 years of news collected from two Brazilian newspapers. Additionally, we interviewed owners of coffee shops, coffee producers, cooperatives, intermediaries, and regulators. We concluded that the value chain faces challenges in reaching higher value-in-use creation for all involved actors.

Abstract:
Photographs probably expanded more horizons and redefined more ways of knowing the world than any other product of nineteenth-century technology. The first daguerreotypes appeared in the Western Hemisphere merely months after the triumphal announcement of Daguerre's process by the French Academy in 1839. In the next three decades, millions of photographic images were produced. Three distinct categories predominated: studio portraits, scenic views for collectors and, after the early 1850s, photographic images transferred to woodcuts and, later, lithographs for publication as line sketches in illustrated newspapers and magazines. Photographic “science” complemented neatly the elite's striving for ways to affirm the region's material progress. Photographers played a vital role in presenting to the world a vision rooted in the aspirations of the dominant members of society.

This article discusses how a series of national mobilizations in Brazil, in 2013, embedded a relevant debate around the social judgment regarding journalistic practices and a consequential “desire of reform” towards an “ideal journalism”. I will also discuss the assumption that community and alternative media help, on a regular basis, to develop journalism and improve democracy. The reflection is based on a two-step approach. The first step consists in the observation of the evolution of mainstream media covering during the protests, through the analysis of the front pages of the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. The second refers to the inclusion of claims related to media in the demonstrations and its roots in the struggles for media democratization in the country, and counts on interviews with 11 Brazilian media activists.

Taking into account the new configurations of online communication between traditional journalism and its readers, this study analyzes how Internet users reacted to posts on the official Facebook pages of eleven Brazilian newspapers when they published news about the 2014 presidential elections. This analysis will focus on comments on posts that mentioned at least one of the main candidates (Aécio Neves, Dilma Rousseff, and Marina Silva/Eduardo Campos). Two variables were considered: the format of the comments and their justification. A quantitative content analysis methodology was used, and statistical tests pertinent to categorical data were applied. Results showed that the main formats used for comments were criticism and praise of the candidates, also the most common justification was one “of position”, especially when the praise format was chosen, which allows us to characterize Brazilian electors as supporters, given the polarization in the campaign.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to review Gilberto Freyre’s ideas about futebol mulato and the way these ideas have spread the notion of the Brazilian mulatto as a symbol of a ‘racial democracy’, unique in Brazil, around the world. The notion first appeared in 1938 in an article by Freyre for the Diários Associados, an important Brazilian newspaper. Football (soccer) was employed by Freyre as the special arena where the multiracial Brazilian nation could shine and show the world a different way of being, opposed to the white and ‘rational’ way of European football. In Freyre’s work, the so-called ‘football-art’ was compared to poetry, while the European style was equated with prose. This essay argues that Freyre’s ideas were useful in constructing the Brazilian identity, a nation of harmony in all its aspects, including the area of race, and how the idea of the mulatto has been used to minimise social disparities within Brazilian society. Freyre’s ideas remain contemporary; many Brazilian intellectuals still refer to these concepts. As well, the press in this huge country, and especially in World Cup years, uses the concepts of mulatto and football-art to characterize Brazil and differentiate it from other countries.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to present the newspaper Portugal Democrático (Democratic Portugal) through its history, its style and format. It is a periodical publication produced in São Paulo by Portuguese exiles during the dictatorship of Antônio Salazar (1926-1974). The newspaper began to circulate in 1956 and came to an end in 1975, a year after the Carnation Revolution that occurred on April 25, 1974. Fighting the Salazar dictatorship outside Portugal was the reason for the creation of the newspaper in Brazil, where it also had the collaboration of Brazilian journalists and intellectuals. This paper analyzes the newspaper Portugal Democrático both in its political aspect and in its editorial feature and concludes that the paper played a greater role than informative. It was an important part of the international opposition movement and resistance to Salazar's dictatorial regime.O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar o jornal Portugal Democrático através de sua história, de seu estilo e formato. Abstract:
However, common sense, this category is perceived as a set of limited professional, uncreative and linked to routine activities. Part of this perception is influenced directly by major newspapers, given that, with news related to the class, they will be published by various media and somehow reach the general public. However, little has been discussed about the image of the accounting professional is treated in major newspapers in Brazil. Thus, this work aims to fill some of this gap, bringing a light on the spread of the accounting professional image in a large Brazilian media newspaper. Thus, a survey was done on the main terms involving accounting, as an accountant, accounting, accounting and bookkeeping in the database of the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, for a year, from November 2013 to November 2014. The intention it was to see what kind of image on the accounter longer perpetuates negative or positive. Abstract:
In this article we aimed to describe and analyze the extent and nature of deaths related to the football spectacle in Brazil. So, we used and crossed data from different sources – field journals, academic books, reports from the Ministry of Justice and websites of security associations and of major Brazilian magazines and newspapers. We conclude that the geographic distribution of these deaths are directly related to the“weight” of each Brazilian region. We also observed that most of these deaths are originated in clashes between fans and in conflicts with the police, caused by the adoption of reactive and repressive strategies by the police. Furthermore, we point out that many of the deaths occurred outside stadiums and involved the use of firearms, as a result of the easy access to these weapons and possibly by a change of attitude ofthe most violent groups about their use.

Abstract:
This study concerns the use of corpus linguistics methodology in psycholinguistics research. Ten linguistic metaphors were selected from English and American newspapers. After that, we identified the underlying conceptual metaphor based on the conceptual metaphor inventory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980, 1999). We seek to investigate what sort of knowledge EFL-learners use when trying to understand a linguistic metaphor. We examined how EFL-learners comprehend linguistic metaphors, firstly without using the context and then using the context. The sample comprised 221 Brazilian students and 16 American students at UCSC. We have also carried out an empirical research using WebCorp.
