Full textThis thesis examines the relationship between the Brazilian Academy of Lettres (ABL) and the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1979). The aim of this study is to analyse to what extant this institution – officially “apolitical” – could have been an instance of legitimation for the military dictatorship. This thesis addressed the history of the ABL since its foundation, focusing especially on its role in the Brazilian cultural field in the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, along with the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institut (IHGB) and the Federal Council for Culture (CFC), the ABL constituted a “conservative cultural structure”. It was a place in which right-wing intellectual and political elites socialised and where a conservative discourse was constructed. The prosopography brought to light a group of Brazilian intellectuals that had fallen into oblivion. This group was very active from the Vargas regime to the military coup, with media relations and political power, which enabled a more direct access to administrative and political positions. The everyday life of the ABL intellectuals includes the inauguration ceremonies, visits that academicians received, the construction of a memory of the heroes of the nation and the exaltation of the homeland. The military attended in large number each ceremony, tribute or commemoration organised by the ABL; in turn, several academicians were also present in tributes gathering s and commemoration organised by the military regime. This sociability between academics and members of the military dictatorship contributed to legitimising the regime in place. The academics where individually committed with the regime, less for their participation in the state apparatus than for the development and dissemination of a discourse of legitimation based on the global interpretation of the Brazilian history written in the 1930s, particularly that of Gilberto Freyre. The conclusions of the analyses undertaken in this thesis demonstrate that the institution created by Machado de Assis in the late nineteenth century helped legitimise the military regime established in Brazil in 1964. However, this legitimation was not developed by an active “collaboration” but rather by a form of complicity. It was the behaviour of all the ABL members, especially their silence and their different degrees of accommodation with the dictatorship, the proximity they had with the representatives of the regime, and the construction, the dissemination and circulation of a conservative discourse reinforcing notions of “public spirit” and patriotism that have played a crucial role in this process of legitimation

Full textFrom some studies about the Brazilian Academy of Letters an institute established in Rio de Janeiro in 1897 , we can see an image that is widespread but not questioned, i.e., that of a space that tends to be visibly male chauvinist. Although the association of the Brazilian Academy and the male domination may seem to be simplistic, there is in it, in fact, a series of sociological implications that must be scrutinized and questioned. Thus, taking a theoretical and analytical approach vis-à-vis the gender, the aim of this study is to capture the nuances that such an association veils. Therefore, our starting point, which takes into consideration the absence of some documents, will be the period of consolidation of the ABL, when the name of a woman is considered to emerge among its founding members. This woman was the writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida, who immediately afterwards saw herself excluded from the final list of members. Also we will dedicate special attention to 1930, year in which the writer Amélia Beviláqua proposed her candidacy to the ABL and got a sound no as a reply. Besides these occurrences, which represent a true institutional emptiness, we will seek to elucidate the changes that took place in the House of Machado de Assis throughout the years, having as a turning point the year 1976, period in which women eligibility was approved. We will see that such an alteration has been followed, until now, by a rare presence of women, more specifically, by the admission of six writers: Rachel de Queiroz, Dinah Silveira de Queiroz, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Nélida Piñon, Zélia Gattai and Ana Maria Machado. From the resulting frame, we will find out whether the changes made in its statute in 1976 were, finally, indicative of a shift in the traditional and conservative structure of ABL or whether the circumstances and motivation that oriented the attainment of prestige and, consequently, a chair in the Brazilian Academy of Letters was the result of social forces which ratify the literary canon.

Abstract: I try to show the main aspect of the integration between Philology and History in the choice of the samples of extemallanguage as a pravider of empirical raw material to diachronic linguistic studies. The phases of the elaboration of the research were as the following: (i) choice and identification related to authenticity of letters; editing, spatia! and temporal localization; (ü) identification of relevant data on senders and addressees; (iii) contextualization of the sample based on extemal history of the Brazilian Porruguese and (iv) linguistic description focusing pattems of locating clitics. The most important result of it is the identification, fram a model of language representation, of a interesting process of competition among grammars with texts written by Brazilians bom between the end of 18 th century and the midclle 19th century. There are three distinct pattems of locating clitics: constructions equivalent to the written Modem European Porruguese in its classic phase; constructions that reflect the changes in direction toward the Modem European Porruguese and constructions that define the Brazilian Porruguese. These pattems show the effect of two changes in the Brazilian Porruguese differently for what has commonly been asserted.

The subject of this study is the experience of time between men of letters from Brazil and Argentina in the final decades of the nineteenth century. The historical documentation that was investigated were two journals with strong resonance among those lettered communities in that time, the Revista Brazileira (1895-1899) and in the argentine case the journal La Biblioteca (1896-1898), as well as two authors particularly important as Euclides da Cunha (1866-1909) and José María Ramos Mejía (1842-1914). The approach prioritized the choice of evidences and symptoms that somehow demonstrate the relationship taken by those men of letters with temporality. The leading hypothesis is that, as opposed to what was considered from the historiography of the two countries, the fin de siècle experience brought with it distinct modalities of time that, far from merely intensify an alleged progressive time of modernity, allowed even his moderation and the taking of increasingly multiple forms.

Abstract: The main objective of this project was to evaluate the potential physiological properties of collagen hydrolysate (CH from Gelita) and a whey protein isolate (WPI) in relation to anti-ulcerative and anti-tumoral effects in rodents. The project presents a technological part, which involves the WPI production with different molecular masses. To obtain the proteic fractions used in this study responsible for these attributes, a characterization was conducted using fractionation through microfiltration using membranes technology and FPLC system through gel permeation and reverse phase chromatography. These technologies were used to obtain the collagen hydrolysate with different molecular masses and the whey protein isolate (WPI) to allow the chemical characterization and biochemical and physiological evaluations of their anti-ulcerative and anti-tumoral activities. The elaborated products obtained from these fractionation technologies and also the products from GELITA (derivatives of collagen) were characterized according to degree of hydrolysis, amino acids composition, molecular mass and peptide number, using established methodologies. Bovine and porcine collagen hydrolysates presented different characteristics concerning degree of amidation and total ammonium content, as well as in isoelectric focusing. The chromatographic profiles in gel were similar, but the biological activity in cellular medium of melanoma B16F10 also differed. Combination of these two types of proteins to evaluate anti-ulcerative and antitumoral effects were also done. Special attention was dedicated to better understanding of metabolic routes and mechanisms of action of these two proteins and their peptides in biological assays (models with rats and mice, respectively). To investigate the anti-ulcerative effect Wistar rats (250-300g bw) were used. Experiments with single and double doses were conducted to evaluate the effect of these proteins in reduction or inhibition of gastric ulcer. The participation of active sulfhydryl compounds, from gluthatione, aminoacids and inter-, intra- polypeptides chains, in protection mechanism, was studied through alkylation of SH reactive groups using N-ethylmaleimide (NEM). Some physiological responses were evaluated, as mucus and gastrin production, during experimental model of ulcer induced by ethanol. The inhibitory activity in gastric ulcer model induced by ethanol was also distinct for these two hydrolysates, bovine (BCH) and porcine (PCH). The porcine hydrolysate presented around 60% of ulcerative lesion inhibition when 750mg/Kg body weight was administrated at single dose. For double dose experiment the percentage of inhibition for bovine hydrolysate was higher than 70% when 1,500mg/Kg bw was administrated. When was tested combinations of either bovine or porcine collagen hydrolysate with WPI a optimized combination was obtained BCH:WPI (50:50) at 375mg/Kg bw of concentration presenting more than 70% gastric ulcerative lesion inhibition. The collagen hydrolysate led to increased mucus production in gastric mucosa while WPI caused in addition an inhibition by non-proteic sulfhydryl compounds participation in the inhibitory activity of gastric lesions. In vitro evaluation using B16F10 cells, the bovine and porcine collagens hydrolysates and their fractions obtained through micro and ultrafiltration, as well as those obtained by reverse phase chromatography (F1, F2, F3), showed the lowest inhibitory concentration for 50% of cells (IC50), presenting increased apoptosis percentage and a significant increase of caspase-3 expression. The study of anti-tumoral property was conducted using mice C57BL/6J. Healthy animals were injected (transplanted) with tumoral cells of murine melanoma B16F10 in dorsal area to evaluate the tumoral implantation, progression, caquexia observing the body weight loss and other symptoms, metastasis, proliferative capacity of the tumor, as its classification according to volume, size and number. The mechanisms involving the protein in the diet for evaluating cell cycle phases, apoptosis and anti-proliferative effects in tumoral tissue development were also objectives of this study. Protocols using chemotherapic were followed with protein which presented better response against tumorigenesis considering other mechanisms that could be involved. In tumorigenesis, in vivo model using B16F10 melanoma cells, a lower percentage of mortality, longer survival percentage and better macroscopic aspects were observed for C57BL/6J animal groups, fed American Institute of Nutrition (AIN-93) with BCH:WPI (50:50) as protein source plus chemotherapic treatment. The cellular cycle also suffered alteration with different diets. The G0/G1 phase for both groups treated and non-treated with chemotherapic increased significantly for the dietetic groups BCH or BCH-P1 + WPI. The apoptosis percentage increased for BCH+WPI+ChTP (with chemotherapic treatment). The proliferative capacity of B16F10 cells was reduced in the groups fed collagen hydrolysate without chemotherapic treatment and when the chemotherapic was associated only the groups that received both proteins BCH or BCH-P1 with WPI showed a significant reduction of proliferative capacity of these cells

Abstract: The present thesis is based on letters from readers to three Brazilian authors: Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948), Pedro Bandeira (1942) and Ana Maria Machado (1941). This epistolary material is divided into three distinct collections and contemplates different periods - the 30's and 40's (Lobato's readers), the 80's and 90's (Bandeira's readers) and, finally, a shorter period from 2000 to 2005 (Machado's readers). This study intends to investigate the public historical reading practices and their interpretative mechanisms by the comparison between the three collections, considering the Literary System, in which authors, readers and works are integrated. Also, this thesis concerns the epistolography field itself, as its object of investigation is based specifically on letters from readers
